Vista more secure than XP, Mac OS, Linux after first 180 days 2007-06-24 02:20:00 Chicago (IL) – A report released by security blogger Jeff Jones indicates that Microsoft’s Trustworthy Computing efforts are paying off: During the first six month after release, there were less than half the number of vulnerabilities disclosed in its predecessor and substantially less security issues than in other popular operating systems. According to Jones, Vista
was hit with 15 disclosed vulnerabilities since its launch on November 30, twelve of which have been addressed and fixed by Microsoft so far. In comparison, Windows XP, introduced in 2001, brought 39 vulnerabilities within six months after launch, three of which had not been fixed after the initial 180 day period. Windows Vista also looks good in comparison to other operating systems. Jones found that Red Hat Enterprise Linux
4 with a Vista-comparable feature set revealed 214 fixed and 59 active vulnerabilities within six months. Ubuntu 6.06 LTS compares with 74 fixed vulnerabilities and 11 unpatched issues, Novell
Broadband Internet in India 2007-06-16 09:51:00 I'm posting this so that you know the state of broadband in India
. The major internet providers in India are BSNL, MTNL, Airtel, Sify, Hathway and Tata. Out of these BSNL and MTNL belong to the government and work in different areas. MTNL provides internet and telephone services in major cities and BSNL does the same in the rest of the country. I will only be talking of unlimited plans. Plans with a download limit don't make any sense on broadband. Even a 1GB download, 2Mbps plan can get exhausted in just over an hour. GeForce 8000 Series Price Cuts 2007-06-08 01:44:00 According to the graphics card makers, NVIDIA may be cutting prices across the board soon and advising some of their partners to keep their inventory low. GeForce
8800 Ultra should be receiving the biggest cut and price may fall to as low as US$599. 8800GTX and 8800 GTS prices may be lowered as well to better compete against the Radeon HD 2900XT. 8600GTS and 8600GT should receive some price cuts as well when HD 2600 and 2400 cards start to flood the market. It seems that NVIDIA is adopting the price cutting strategy to put down their competitor before they have any chance to recoup any market share.News Source: VR-Zone
DDR3 Performance Computex 2007 2007-06-08 00:44:00 DDR3 IS NEW and it isn't exactly fast - or is it? The key "enthusiast" memory vendors at the show in the shadow of the world's tallest building are pushing the limits with what they have in hand. Fortunately, the focus is on both latency and bandwidth, not just pure GHz. Corsair's Hyatt demo suite featured its DDR3 DIMM pair running at a nice round DDR3-2000 speed, with CL 10-10-10, yet another nice round number. Again, it feels tough to get used to double-digit latency numbers, but well, the net nanosecond latency is the same as DDR2-800 CL4-4-4, so not that bad over all. GEIL's demo didn't run so high in the frequency department, but the latency was quite impressive: DDR3-1500 CL 6-7-6, with net latency time even lower than the Corsair part.Source: The Inquirer Read more:Performance
Intel gets Desktop SLI License from Nvidia 2007-06-07 00:02:00 AND THE BIGGEST story of the show so far is: Intel
has landed an SLI licence for desktop, not just mobile. You don't believe us? Look at the tag on the picture below. The deal was confirmed multiple times by the vendor and others. Below the tagged shot is a full board one with most identifying things blanked out to save the vendor's blushes.Read more...Edit:AFTER SEEING THAT several Intel partners talked about Chipzilla getting a licence for SLI multi-technology and even showcased upcoming motherboards with SLI support, we got a request from Nvidia to correct our story. Derek Perez, the PR headmaster, contacted us and said that Nvidia hadn't signed anything with La Intella and that SLI will continue to be technology exclusive to Nforce chipsets. However, Intel's keynote held on the first day of Computex had a slide which mentioned that Intel has licensed SLI technology for future products, after which one outlook for future V8 systems was a bit more optimistic. Intel X38 Express Chipset Surfaces 2007-06-05 09:10:00 Intel
will unveil the high-end version of its Bearlake-family next month – the Intel X38 Express
. The new Intel X38 Express replaces the 975X Express, which launched over a year ago with Intel’s Presler Netburst processors. The new chipset introduces new features to Intel’s high-end enthusiast and workstation platform such as PCIE 2.0 and DDR3 memory.New to the Intel X38 Express is support for dual full-speed PCIe 2.0 x16 slots. The dual PCIe 2.0 slots are compatible with AMD’s CrossFire technology for multi-GPU graphics processing. Motherboard manufacturers are also free to equip Intel X38 Express based boards with a third physical PCIe 2.0 x16 for triple-play physics. Due to chipset limitations, the third physical PCIe 2.0 x16 slot has lesser lanes, with most manufacturers opting for four lanes.DDR3 is the only officially supported memory for the Intel X38 Express. Intel touts DDR3-1333 memory for X38 Express motherboards. DDR2 memory support has been removed offic
AMD 55nm DX10.1 GPUs 2007-06-04 21:51:00 WHILE NVIDIA IS showing off its summer lineup and preparing mobile 8800/8400, DAAMIT is talking to its partners about the next generation of products, even though technically, it still hasn't delivered on this one. The parts we're talking about here are scheduled to launch in first half of 2008, so bear with us. The latest batch of roadmaps tells of details about several new parts, for example the RV670 and R670, and mobile ones, such as the M88, M86 and M82. These three parts are nothing but a mobile attack based on fall refresh parts. The M88 is the highest performing contender, and sports DirectX 10.1, CrossFire support and UVD. Yes, we are mentioning UVD here - meaning that the upcoming R670 also has UVD. This part is of course supporting PCIe Gen2 so that CrossFire could utilize maximum bandwidth available. This part will be manufactured in 55nm half-node process over at TSMC, much like Nvidia's NB9E.Read more... Read more:AMD

Barcelona beaten by Clovertown? 2007-05-27 07:19:00 At the Microprocessor Forum, Intel demoed its V8 workstation running the POV-Ray benchmark. The machine is equipped with Intel's Workstation Board S5000XVN, 2 quad-core Xeons 5365, clocked at 3GHz and 16GB RAM. And the results are simply impressive: Intel scored over 4,900 pixels per seconds versus a little bit over 4,000 for AMD's 4 sockets quad-core (Barcelona
) system. Again, this is an AMD 16 cores system versus Intel's 8 cores V8 machine. If you take 16 cores at 1.8Ghz, divided by 2 and add 60% to get to 3.0Ghz, it gives POV-Ray score of 3600 for 8 cores. Meaning that at 3.0GHz, Barcelona still lose by quite some compare to an 8 cores Clowertown systemSource: FanboyReview
Some AMD Barcelona Info 2007-05-27 05:33:00 THERE HAS BEEN a lot of speculation about the Barcelona
numbers we posted the other day. With that in mind, let me toss a little more fuel on the fire. The hard numbers are 2200 for an 8 core (4 x 2) Opteron system vs 4000 for a 16 core (4 x 4) Barcelona, or about 1.82 scaling. On the surface, this looks pretty bad, but there are some bright spots. First the bad, POV is a benchmark that scales really well, almost perfectly with core count. It is largely cache resident, and mainly needs raw number crunching power. POV should get much closer to 2x scaling merely going from 8 to 16 cores. That also discounts any improvement that Barcelona has over Opteron, so theoretically it should scale more than 2x. It didn't. Back to the good. The CPUs were HE or 65W parts said to be running at the same clock speeds. Now 65W isn't a big trick with the Rev F Opterons, but 65W is a trick with a quad core Barcelona. Intel has a massively downclocked 50W Clovertown as well, so it can be done, but this i Read more:AMD

Google Moves Closer to Universal Search 2007-05-18 10:58:00 This week marked another milestone for search giant Google
. The company's simplistic homepage received a rather discrete update, moving the navigation options up to the top of the screen rather than docked at the search field. The move says Google, is to move closer to the goal of having universal search -- that is, one search providing all categories of results. To achieve this, Google is taking first steps to introduce users to more of its features. Google Blog Search
, Book Search, Groups, code and other tools are now more readily accessible. Even Google's office productivity tools are more up front too. For instance, Google's Docs & Spreadsheets as well as its photo management application Picasa Web Albums are now easier to get to. The biggest improvement for Google is the method in which it now conducts searches. Previously, results were derived from website page ranking, a system that Google itself pioneered. Now, Google says results are a culmination of many categories. Read more:Universal

MSI K9AGM2 FIH reviewed on Techtree 2007-05-16 07:47:00 The MSI K9AGM2 FIH based on the 690G chipset is available in India and has been reviewed on Techtree. A great VFM board for those on a budget. This chipset series consists of two primary variants: the 690G and the 690V. The difference between the 690G and 690V is that the 690G supports on-board DVI and HDMI interfaces while the 690V does not. The big difference is the integrated graphics core, with the 690G including the higher-end ATI Radeon X1250 and the 690V using the Radeon X1200. But we worry about that in this review. Let's see what the 690G offers. It features the RS690 Northbridge and SB600 Southbridge and supports the full range of Socket AM2 processors, including the Athlon 64 FX/X2, Athlon 64, and Sempron. Basic features include a 1GHz HyperTransport link, a unified memory architecture, PCI Express x16 graphics and x1 peripheral support, support for memory speeds up to DDR/800, up to 10 USB 2.0 sports, and Serial ATA.Although specs like these are pretty common these days, the

How To Safely Recycle a Computer 2007-05-16 00:02:00 Just came across this blog post. It links to a few articles on how to recycle a computer. My dad loves to call me a tree-hugger (apparently learning foreign languages earns me a liberal tag). But I know I'm not--I'm perfectly willing to use Roundup on that nasty old thistle as anyone. And I would be the first to admit to not saving soda cans *gasp*.I do cringe, though, whenever I think of all the old computers that might be running around in landfills. I've managed to pawn my old computers off on unsuspecting family members so far, but I've been waiting for that dread day when they catch on to my schemes. Now I am happy to report that there are several options for recycling your ancient (2 years old), slower-than-molasses-in-january (takes more than 5 seconds to load google), un-cool-looking (no fancy blue or green LED lights) computer. This article by CNET.com covers methods for erasing the data off your hard drive before you recycle the old monster. Gigabyte P35-DS3R upto 575Mhz Fsb 2007-05-11 09:49:00 I've gotten hold of a retail piece of Gigabyte
P35-DS3R based on the Intel P35 chipset:The overclocking, out of the box, no modifications as is, is stunning. FSB-wise, it climbed, high, up to 575MHz FSB! Right out of the box no frills overclocking, this board has a lot more potential under some modifications of course. And this is a value-board, with the DQ6 more aimed for overclocking, I can hope for a lot more from it.Source: VR-Zone

AMD's 2400 and 2600 benched 2007-06-27 07:50:00 WE ARE SWIFTLY closing in upon the time when DAAMIT's much-delayed and much-maligned 2400 and 2600 chipsets hit the market. Although, exactly when that date is we're not sure anybody really knows yet. Lucky for us then, that those crazy Far Eastern types at PC In Life are on the ball with some benchmarketing. Whilst language is a barrier, benchmark graphs are the graphics industry's own Babel fish. The benchmarks have the 2600 Pro coming out consistently faster than the 8500 GT, at low resolutions. At high resolutions, things are a bit closer, but the 2600 still reigns, with the 260 XT appearing a few FPS faster than the 8600 GT. Some of the numbers look slightly suspicious - 2600 XT CrossFire appears to be more than twice as fast in Stalker as 8600 GT SLI, which doesn't sound quite right to us - but all in all its an interesting early look at the cards. If nothing else, it proves that ATI hasn't completely dropped the ball. And it looks like, with some good marketing an Read more:AMD
Intel X38 will do SLI 2007-06-27 07:44:00 WHEN WE WROTE that Intel
had a desktop SLI licence during Computex, we got a rare acknowledgment of our existence from Nvidious PR. To shorten up the conversation, they said we were full of it. To say we don't hold NV in high regard is far from understating the case. The firm is seen by most journalists as slightly lower on the 'happy things' scale then finding infected leeches on your genitals after a swim in the sewer. We didn't think it could be possible, but their standing dropped even further when we found out that Intel's upcoming X38 chipset will do SLI. Now we are sure that NV will deny it up and down, but seeing as how they have trouble with anything relating to the truth, I would urge the reader to ignore them. The engineers tell us that SLI drivers are in the final state of polishing with a few bugs left to quash, but plenty of time remains to finish things up. In any case, it is not a surprise to anyone that this is happening, unless you work for NV PR, the

Wrap Blogger page content around Adsense block 2007-06-29 07:37:00 Finally I've got my blog content to wrap around my adsense ads. I am no html guru but I will try to give a short tutorial here. This will let you place an adsense ad at the top of the page which will be wrapped around by page content. Unlike other tutorials this won't place the ad within the posts. The problem with displaying ads within the post is that if you have 7 posts that display on your main page then you are trying to place 7 ads on your main page but adsense Terms of Service allow only 3 per page. This page is a live example of what this tutorial does. To begin you should be using the classic template. I prefer using the classic template because it much easier to customise the template if you know a bit of html. Another thing you need to do is disable float alignment. You will find this in the Formatting section of your blog settings. Just set the "Enable float alignment" to no.
