Blockbuster will offer more Blu-ray titles before HD DVD 2007-06-22 18:33:57 The battle continues for which high-definition disc will be sitting near your HDTV, but the game may have changed a little bit this week. We’ve been waiting for some big players to start choosing sides, and it seems like someone has stepped up to the plate.
Blockbuster
announced that 18% of its retail outlets will expand their offerings to include Blu-ray titles only. For Blockbuster, it’s a matter of shelf space. Working in retail for as long as I have, I understand their dilemma. In an online store, like Amazon.com or even Blockbuster’s online offerings, you don’t have to worry about shelf space. You can keep as many DVD, HD DVD, or Blu-ray titles as you want and not have to expand your store space. Items are kept in a large warehouse with sophisticated sorting systems, allowing customers to choose from the movie titles they want.
Not so in a retail store, especially a video rental store. Blockbuster and others have to keep popular titles on the shelf,

Apple will release new Apple TV - could HD be coming? 2007-05-31 15:30:51 The fine folks from Apple
Inc. have decided to start selling a new version of the Apple TV with a 160 GB hard drive. Could this be the tell-tale sign that HD video will soon be available in the iTunes Store?
I think so, because I can’t really think of any other reason that you would need to have a larger hard drive. My Apple TV streams media just fine over my network and I have nothing stored on the unit itself.
I know that many have been disappointed over the quality of movies available from iTunes (I’m not one of them, I understand that we are in the early adoption phase) and this may be the answer to that problem.
Here’s hoping that all the folks with complaints out there will now be ready to fork over the dough for a new Apple TV.
Oh, by the way, this new model will be priced at $399. Or you can still pick up the original model for $299 and just settle for standard video. Which really does look pretty good.
At least I think so.

Plasmariser Hides, Reveals On Demand 2007-05-29 17:43:15
Have you ever wanted one of those cool boxes that lets you lower and raise your big glorious plasma TV up and down, hiding the beauty of your HDTV until you are ready to be overwhelmed with wonderful high definition goodness?
I have.
But those display units are fairly pricey, unless you’re the type that likes to build everything yourself. And you know who I’m talking to.
Thankfully for the rest of us, the Plasmariser can hide and reveal your display whenever you like, even at the sound of your voice. Never mind telling your dog to sit, now you can tell your HDTV to sit.
Internal speakers, LED illumination and a weatherproof transportation cover are all in the package, making for a great way to hide your plasma away whenever you like.
I wonder if it will move fast enough to miss a flying Wii remote if you lose your grip while playing Wii Games…

Panasonic TC-32LX60 32-inch LCD HDTV review 2007-05-09 06:00:54
The Panasonic
TC-32LX60 is an attractive LCD HDTV
. Its stylish black-and-silver frame and swiveling stand distinguish it from more generic designs, and its good combination of ports, image quality, and price make it a good buy, overall.
The TC-32LX60 has three sets of composite inputs, one of which is on the side of the panel for connecting devices like camcorders. But the provision of just one HDMI input and one set of component inputs may be insufficient for many setups. HDMI hasn’t completely replaced component connections yet, so we think sets like this should have more more than one component connection, as such connections provide the second-highest quality of standardized input.
While Panasonic’s specifications claim a 178-degree horizontal and vertical viewing angle, the vertical viewing angle seems to be narrower than the horizontal viewing angle.

Vizio VX32LHDTV 32 inch LCD HDTV review 2007-05-07 23:12:22
Vizio is one of the kings of low-cost HDTV
s. This set is no exception, coming in at around $700. And while its economy comes with a few rough edges, the set overall is a good value for the features and image quality that you get.
The low price comes with a few drawbacks. The TV doesn’t swivel or allow height adjustments, and the integrated speakers at the bottom of the set are embedded in a wide, distracting silver bar. Plus, the placement of the connectors–low on the rear of the back panel–to be inconvenient, although the connectors were nicely color coded.
The VX32LHDTV has plenty of inputs, including two HDMI, two composite, one S-Video, two sets of components, and VGA. The bubbly, visually pleasing on-screen menus are easy to navigate with the slim, silver remote control. There are also separate RGB controls for custom color settings. The unit offers picture-in-picture display, and it has channel, volume, and power buttons on the side of the cabinet.

Black Snake Moan [HD DVD] Review 2007-06-25 21:41:52
The lurid scenario–a nymphomaniacal white trash nymphet (Christina Ricci) is held prisoner by a bitter bluesman (Samuel L. Jackson)–gives way to an affecting tale of redemption in BlackSnake
Moan, writer/director Craig Brewer’s follow-up to the acclaimed Hustle & Flow. Lazarus (Jackson, Jungle Fever, Pulp Fiction) finds Rae (Ricci, Monster, The Ice Storm) beaten unconscious on the road in front of his backwoods house. After bringing her inside, he learns of her wanton ways and decides to exorcise his own demons by curing Rae of her sexual compulsion. Black Snake
Moan could have been terrible, but Brewer takes his story seriously enough to dig into the genuine emotions of such a situation (though along the way he certainly flirts with sexploitation overtones–several scenes look like they were plucked straight out of a hitherto unknown 1970s trash classic). Ricci, Jackson, and the supporting cast (including pop star Justin Timberlake, giving a surprisingly Read more:Black Snake Moan

With an unprecedented production budget of $25 million, and from the makers of Blue Planet: Seas of Life, comes the epic story of life on Earth

Is Mitsubishi bringing frickin’ lasers to HDTV? 2007-06-24 19:53:26 Lasers. You’ve heard about them for years, mostly in science fiction movies and books as the be-all, end-all of weaponry. Laser pistol or rifles (yeah, I’m showing my geeky side here real bad) seem to have an unlimited supply of ammunition, wreaking havoc on whatever evil baddie happens to be on the receiving end of a red blaster shot from the hero of the story.
And they look really cool on film, even though you have to have a fairly powerful laser beam to even see it. Still, I suspend my disbelief with every sci-fi flick I head out to see, waiting to see which big laser gun is going to be used this time to blow up random objects.
Lasers are awesome. Dr. Evil likes them, and that’s good enough for me.
But can you imagine having lasers in your HDTV
? Wouldn’t they cut through the glass in the display or something? Or worse yet, tear a hole in your girlfriend’s arm while you’re sitting on your couch making out?

Do you have an HDTV? You’re in the minority if you do 2007-06-26 13:10:33 I’m finding this a little hard to believe at this point, but I guess I shouldn’t. According to a press release from CEA Research, only 30 percent of US households own an HDTV
at this point.
Astonishing.
The report states that approximately 16 million HD sets will be sold this year, bringing the total number of HDTVs sold in the US to 52.5 million.
Here’s what I find interesting. We HDTV owners are still in the minority here in the US. But, we’re fanatical. CEA states that of that 30 percent, nearly 1/3 own more than one high definition set.
What does that mean? I know that for many people the number one stumbling block to buying an HDTV is the lack of content from providers. Price is not too much of an issue any more with some LCDs and plasma HDTVs now below the $1000 mark. However, most HDTV providers only offer a handful of channels to choose from. I know I only get about 9, not including premium channels like H

300 Blu-Ray review 2007-08-03 15:52:02
Frank Miller adaptations are on a roll. First we got "Sin City," and now we have the story of three hundred Spartans who repelled a massive invasion.
And the adaptation of "300" is a stunning one — literally stunning, since it bombards the viewer with larger-than-life characters, smashing visuals and tight direction. It goes a bit too fast for its own good, but it’s a truly epic film that takes the historical war movie to another level — all the more so because it actually happened.
As the introduction tells us, the Spartans were the ultimate warrior people. Babies were inspected for weakness or faults, and killed if they had any; as they were growing up, they were taught and toughened by a savage regimen. Their only true hope was to "die beautifully" for their land.
A Persian messenger arrives, telling King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) that the god-king Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) wants the Spartans to bow to him. Leonidas’ response Read more:review
