The 10 Best Web Browser add-ons - Google Toolbar
2007-06-13 19:06:27
Here’s another great web browser add-on that I’ve used for quite some time now, Google Toolbar .  Once you download the toolbar, you’ll notice that there is, of course, a text box for searching the web with Google. The best feature of this box is it’s memory.  All of the past searches you’ve typed in the box can be recalled as you are typing in your keyword or phrase.  In other words, if you search for something fairly often, you won’t have to tire your poor little fingers by typing the whole word out again.  Kind of like cruise control for you keyboard. Google toolbar also has an autofill feature for web forms, which all of us get sick and tired of filling out.  I’ll tell you later about another great tool that you can use to fill out your forms automatically, but that one’s not a browser add-on so it will have to wait. For those among you that aren’t the best spellers, Google Toolbar is here to rescue you.

The 10 Best Web Browser add-ons - McAfee Site Advisor
2007-06-12 19:13:52
As part of the ongoing commitment of the TechCast Weekly to provide useful tips to all you average computer users out there (doesn’t that sound very corporate and stuffy?), I’ve decided to start a new series covering the top 10 best add-ons for your web browser. I’m going to do my best to include tools that will work with both Internet Explorer and Firefox so as not to alienate anyone, even though you really should be using Firefox.  At least that’s what I think! First up in this little series is a tool that I have been using for at least a couple of years now.  It’s my own little "crystal ball" into what web sites can be dangerous and which sites are fairly safe for me to visit. Follow me with my little example of a very useful tool that can keep you from visiting a site that might flood your computer with some nasty spyware. Let’s say you do a Google search for a phrase.  Up pops your list of site matches and you off click

The perfect graduation gift - iTunes gift cards
2007-05-29 21:03:00
Ah, high school graduation .  One of those great times in our lives.  Not only because you’re able to reflect back on the last 12 years or so and think about all the idiotic things you’ve done (most of which you’ll regret) and remember the people you’ve called friends (many of whom you won’t remember in 5 years).  No, no.  Graduation is an awesome time mostly because you get lots of presents and money! WOOHOO! Yes, it’s the time that all children look forward to.  Graduation means presents, and mostly good presents.  Like laptops.  iPods.  Maybe even an iPhone. But let’s say you do get your child an iPod for graduation.  Don’t you think they’d appreciate having something to put on said iPod? Sure they would. Pick up an iTunes gift card for your graduate.  They’ll love you for it.  And they won’t spend their last dime on songs from the iTunes store while they are at t

Microsoft patches critical Vista security hole
2007-05-21 20:58:14
Microsoft has just released a patch for a critical hole in Windows Vista that they have been working on since Christmas.  The error not only affects Vista, but also Windows 2000 (Service Pack 4) and Windows XP.  Without going into too much technical jargon, the hole affected the way a certain subsystem handled error messages.  The hole could have been used to allow an attacker to run any command or program on your PC.  Thankfully, there have been no reported incidents where this security hole was used to exploit a system.  But, that doesn’t mean that you should not download any new updates for Windows as soon as you can.  If you have Automatic Updates turned on (which you should), everything should be just fine. If you use third-party ink in your printer does it void your warranty?
2007-05-15 21:36:47
Yes, I know, we all have to buy ink for our printers.  And, yes, it is exorbitantly expensive.  If you purchase a cheaper printer, your ink will probably cost as much as the printer did.  But you can purchase ink at much cheaper prices if you know where to look.  My favorite place is at #1 Inkjet, where you can save up to 80% over regular prices. The trouble is that there is a misconception going around that if you use third party ink you will void your printer’s warranty. Not true, as discussed in a recent article at PC World. According to Canon, Epson, and Lexmark, using a third-party ink cartridge will not void your warranty.  If the cartridge itself damages your printer, then you’re out of luck. But the chances of that happening aren’t that great. And if you’re really concerned about using manufacturer’s cartridges, just use them for the first year.  Then your warranty will be up and you can start saving some money on i

HP Photosmart R837 review
2007-05-11 15:53:40
I’m the first to admit, I’m a huge fan of HP computers and printers.  I hear lots of people complaining about their customer service, but it’s no worse than any other major PC manufacturer.  Thank goodness we have Apple to provide the alternative.  But HP is a definite winner in my mind in the PC and print world. I wish I could say the same for their cameras. HP cameras are like the Chicago Cubs of the camera world.  Always right around the middle of the pack, but never really anything to get excited about.  This holds true with their new R837 7.2 megapixel camera. HP tries to copy the styling of Sony’s fantastic T-series of cameras (you remember, the almost credit card sized camera where the ladies in the diner rush to get a picture of Steven Tyler as he strolls past?  Yeah, those are pretty awesome) but fails miserably.  Sony’s T-series has slide cover over the camera lens that moves effortlessly into position.

Samsung releases new and improved Q1 Ultra Ultra-mobile PC
2007-05-07 22:55:58
I’ve never been a big fan of two different categories of PCs.  The first of these categories is the tablet PC.  I’ve yet to find anyone that has been able to convice me that tablets have any use whatsoever, aside from some very specialized uses in the medical and graphic design fields.  Not for the average consumer.  So if anyone would like to prove the uses of a tablet to me, fire away. The second category is the Ultra Mobile PC.  These guys fit somewhere in between a PDA and a laptop, not really getting anything right. One of the first ultra mobiles to be release was the Samsung Q1.  I admit, I’m a big Samsung fan, but I wasn’t impressed with the Q1.  But now, I’m slightly intrigued.  With a new design that includes many of the requested features left out of the first Q1, the new Q1 Ultra series of UMPCs might make me take a second look. For one thing, there’s at least a blasted keyboard this time. And ins

If my router has a firewall, why do I need added security measures? - TechCast Weekly 32
2007-05-02 22:16:15
After recovering from the fantastic event that was Big Seminar 9 (WHEW! What a blast!  And make sure you keep an eye out for a new podcast featuring the biggest minds in Internet Marketing, Big Seminar Interviews, coming soon…), this week on the TechCast Weekly Computer Knowledge Podcast I’m talking about the need for added security measures even if your router does have a firewall. Firewalls are nice for inbound attacks to your computer from the outside world, but what if something attacks from the inside?  Perhaps a virus on a flash drive you brought home from work?  What if someone is trying to get into your wireless network?  Just some things to think about and ways to add more security to your home network.  As I’ve mentioned in the show, the easiest way I know of to secure your home network plus add tons of other great functionality to your network is by using Network Magic.  Network Magic is simply the BEST tool for configuring

Adding security to your wireless network - TechCast Weekly 31
2007-04-24 10:36:57
In this episode of the TechCast Weekly Computer Knowledge Podcast, Michael Paul discusses the topic of wireless network security .  Wireless networking has become all the rage due the ease of setup, increasing data transfer rates, and cheaper equipment.  Wireless networks offer and easy way to share internet access among several computers, but they can open your computer to outsiders.  A good security plan should be on the mind of anyone wanting to use a wireless network. Learn why in this week’s episode of the TechCast Weekly and learn how you can easily setup your wireless network security plan with Network Magic. Learn about the WEP encryption standard and why you shouldn’t use it, and find out why the WPA standard is the preferred choice for wireless network security. What is a router?
2007-04-21 06:00:34
A router is, very simply, a device that forwards data packets on a network. Now data packets may sound like a hard subject to tackle, but data packets are simply the chunks of information that you request any time you visit a web page. No matter which web page it is, the computer that is home to the web page sends that information to you in what are called "data packets." But where do those packets know how to get where they are going? Well, that is because they are sent from a router, and a router tells them, "Hey, you need to go here, you need to go here, you need to go here." It kind of works the same way at your home. However, instead of sending those packets from a web site, it is sending them to computers. What a router does is it allows several different computers to access the Internet without having to pay a different broadband subscription for each one. So it’s not like if you want to have two or three computers in your home you have to go to your

Big Seminar 9 begins in 7 days
2007-04-20 15:24:18
Big Seminar 9 is heading to Atlanta in 7 days.  If you know anything about me, you know I’ll be there.  I reserved my seat as soon as they became available, not wanting to miss the chance to go.  There are still a few seats available, but not many.  If you’re thinking about going but just haven’t committed yet, let me encourage you to do so. Granted, I have never been to Big Seminar before.  And you may ask why I’m so pumped about going.  Let me tell you and hopefully you’ll make the decision to join me there. Here’s the main reason behind my trip to Atlanta next week: immersion.  Ask anyone what the best way to learn a foreign language is and they’ll tell you that you need to spend some time in that country.  Get totally wrapped up in the environment.  Meet the people, see how they work.  Become completely immersed. So, I figured what better way to learn the "language" of Internet m

Computer Crash! How to Prevent Loss of Valuable Data - The Transcripts
2007-04-10 16:23:31
This week, we’re going to talk about being prepared for a computer crash, and how you can avoid losing your valuable data on your computer. We’ve got several different options to talk about this week, that’s going to help you prevent losing that valuable data, and several ways that you can use different backup strategies to store that information and be ready, just in case your computer crashes or something happens, well, if your computer is stolen. If you use a laptop primarily and somebody decides that: "Hey, I need to have that laptop," you’ve, at least, got a backup of all that important data. Hopefully, you’ve got it secured on your laptop. If you need to do that, there’s lots of different file encryption tools, and maybe we’ll do a show about that here in a few weeks to go along with this. But, it’s something that happens to every computer user at some point in time in their life. At some point, your computer crashes, an

Buying the Perfect Computer - RAM
2007-03-14 09:31:26
Part 2 of our continuing series from the TechCast Weekly on Buying the Perfect Computer is all about RAM.  Some people have a hard time understanding what RAM really is, often confusing it as the amount of storage space available on your computer.  The storage space available on your computer is your hard drive, which we’ll discuss later.  RAM is fast memory used by your computer to execute tasks. When your computer runs out of RAM, it starts swapping data to the much slower hard drive, which slows down your entire system. Here’s how it works:  Your CPU, the processor, needs information to perform an action, let’s say we’re opening up Microsoft Word.  It tells the RAM what it needs to open the program.  The RAM tells the hard drive what information it needs and receives it.  If you have enough RAM in your system, all of that information can then be stored in RAM, which can send information to the CPU much faster than your hard
