Black Milk has work ethic (and the respect of his peers)
2007-06-22 13:12:24
Black Milk has a new journal entry (link saves you through going through 8 pages of HHG advertising) at HipHopGame and by the looks of it - he hasn’t quit working. He’s worked with Sean Price in Detroit, continues to work with his man Guilty Simpson and is expanding on his Caltroit project with Aftermath’s Bishop Lamont. He’s also sending cuts back and forth with Pharoahe Monche showing that some of hip hop brightest have taken notice of Black Milk’s beats and want in on the dopeness. Milk talks about working with Sean Price (of Boot Camp Clik fame): Recording with Sean Price, that was crazy! The first three days we were in the studio, we really didn’t get any work done because we were just kicking it and joking. Sean has so much energy. He has a lot of life and energy when he comes to the studio, so it’s nothing but jokes and stories all day. On the fourth day, we recorded our first song. After that, we were just knocking shit out. It was cool. It w

Mr. Porter in the Detroit News
2007-06-21 13:28:05
The Detroit News features a story on Denaun Porter and his new MrPorterBeats.com website in today’s edition. The story doesn’t cover anything about the site that already hasn’t been said (see related articles below), but it has some interesting D12 and Eminem information along with some future projects. D12 is’ currently “on hold,” he says. Their forthcoming third album is 70 percent done, by his estimation, but so far boasts no input or content from Eminem, whom Porter says he hasn’t spoken with in some time. “The last time I talked to him? I don’t even remember. It’s been a couple of months,” he says. The D12 album will be finished after Eminem’s next album - rumored to be awaiting a holiday release - is finished. In the interim, Porter worked on Pharaohe Monch’s upcoming album, as well as projects by Detroit rapper Guilty Simpson and Detroit/New Jersey duo Nu World Hustle. But Porter also is keeping his e

Dwele: A future Detroit great?
2007-06-21 13:18:27
20 years from now will we be talking about Dwele the same way we talk about the Motown greats? Maybe not to the extent of Stevie Wonder extent, but Dwele is trying to capture that essence in his music today. Says Dwele in an interview with the Detroit News: “I wanna create memories with my music,” says Dwele during a telephone interview. “Fifteen years from now, I want people to hear my music and have good memories come to mind.” (And yeah, Dwele ain’t technically hip hop but he was in the Breakfast Club so he’s earned his stripes)

When Tommy Lee took an ‘L’ in the D
2007-06-18 14:42:59
I was saving this post/picture for a special occasion and what better than DetroitHipHop.net’s 200th post? Super Bowl XL will always be memorable to Detroit as it’s when Jerome Bettis won the big dance in the city he calls home. However, thats not the only fond memory we have. Along with the football related festivities brought to Detroit by the NFL were entertainment’s and pop culture’s brightest embarking on the D. With the shear number of events and parties taking place in Metro Detroit, you would have to expect that someone famous would be taking an ‘L’ in one way or another. Washed up Tommy Lee would be the one provide a great story for years to come. As the story goes, Tommy Lee was at a party and in his stupor was talking mad greasy about his ex’s next, Kid Rock, and the city of Detroit in general. Well you know that wasn’t going to be taken lightly. Long story short, Tommy Lee’s lights were turned out leaving him dazed and

Guilty Simpson “Ode to the Ghetto” release date set for late 2007
2007-06-17 21:09:10
Stones Throw Records has announced that they and Guilty Simpson will his release his much anticipated debut record in late 2007. It’s titled Ode to the Ghetto and not The Beast or other speculated upon titles. It will feature production from Denon Porter, J Dilla, Madlib, Oh No and Jake One. Don’t be surprised if there are more guests from “the D” announced in the future. A short bio of Guilty is at his Stones Throw website. The new artist at Stones Throw is Detroit’s Guilty Simpson, following 3 years of guest tracks and traveling on our Chrome Children tour. Guilty was a favorite MC of J Dilla, who first brought him to us. Dilla said, “You should sign this guy.” Who is going to say no to that? It was J Dilla who first put Guilty on wax, recording him on Jaylib’s Champion Sound album. The two began recording an album together in 2003, which was delayed by Dilla’s move to Los Angeles and his growing health troubles. The material the

DJ Toomp may co-executive produce Royce’s “Street Hop”
2007-06-29 16:36:52
According to HipHopGame.com: Rumors are swirling around Royce ’s camp that DJ Toomp (who’s produce d for T.I., Kanye West, Young Jeezy and more) may be jumping aboard the Street Hop album as a co-executive producer. If this is true, he would be working alongside DJ Premier on the album. There is currently no release date for Street Hop. Why bring in another general when you have a 5-star general in place (Primo)? That would be like having Paul Pierce and trading for Ray Allen. Oh, wait… We’ll wait and see.

If Detroit Rappers were the Wu-Tang Clan
2007-06-29 11:37:06
Despite some obvious similarities to the Wu-tang Clan, D12 really didn’t warrant comparison to the 9 man strong team as individuals. If Detroit emcees were to band together and do a Wu tribute album (purely hypothetical) or form a parallel version of the group, this is how they would form together (like Voltron!). RZA - The ring leader - Has to be none other than J Dilla. Aside from fulfilling both emcee/producer capabilities, it’s the actual similarity in the quality of production and the sometimes lacklustre emceeing (see RZA on Ras Kass’ “The End”) that makes this an obvious choice. GZA - The wise leader - Another easy one - Less scientific but Phat Kat has been putting in work since the days of 1st Down with his old running mate droppin’ knowledge and schooling cats. Method Man - The star - Stole the spotlight on the initial album without necessarily knowing he would (”M-E-T-H-O-D MAN”). That would be Obie Trice. Through all the

Buff1 on where he fits in Michigan Hip Hop
2007-06-28 13:38:22
HipHopGame caught up with Buff1 and got to know about him, Pure, the Athletic Mic League and his place in Michigan Hip Hop. Where do you see yourself fitting into the Michigan hip-hop scene? The fact that we’re from Ann Arbor and not Detroit kind of sets us apart initially. Usually when people think of Michigan hip-hop, they think of Detroit. That’s where some of the dopest musicians in the world come from, but we’re not from there. We’re from Ann Arbor and that’s what we have to represent. I know far too many people not from Detroit that try to claim Detroit. I’m proud of my city and I think people outside of Ann Arbor see that and respect that It took us awhile at first to really get noticed on the scene, because we were from Ann Arbor and cats from the D had the stamp on the Michigan hip-hop scene. As far as talent-wise, it was all theirs. Once they saw what we’re doing, they respected it and it’s been love ever since. We just try

2007-06-27 18:35:49
Earlier this year Scion held a competition to help emcees get heard. The Prospect: The Rise of an Unsigned Emcee’s finalists include two Michigan emcees (surprise, surprise). Congratulations to Marvwon and Finale for being chosen by judges DJ Hi-tek, Lenny S. (VP of A&R Def Jam/Rocafella) and Ryan Ford (Executive Editor, The Source *is that something you would want to advertise now? …just thinking out loud*) in the top ten. The winner will be announced in August.

Stretch Money and the men behind him (Hot Lava Records)
2007-06-27 18:14:06
Khary Turner and the Metro Times caught up with Hot Lava Records head honcho, Jesse “Crane Novacane” Wilson recently and write about him, his record label and their star artist, Stretch Money . Stretch Money and his Hot Lava bosses are feeling the love in Detroit these days but they have humble roots. Writes Turner: The foundation of Hot Lava’s philosophy mirrors the brothers’ story, which is to embrace life’s grind. And that grind began to show dividends in 2004 when J. Mitch introduced Crane to Darren “Stretch Money” McCullough. Stretch had great wordplay, but he wasn’t serious. “I wasn’t trying to pursue it,” Stretch says. “I just knew how to rap. [Crane] said ‘You got somethin’.’ [He] turned nothin’ into somethin’.” Stretch could relate to Crane. His baby face is one thing, but the rough edges tell his story. After graduating, Stretch enrolled at Baker College and got off to

Athletic Mic League’s Buff1 on Okayplayer
2007-06-27 15:56:10
Buff1 has been getting strong reviews for his album Pure across the board. It doesn’t hurt that it wasn’t made for BET and that it features some of the world’s favorite emcees in Guilty Simpson and One Be Lo. Okayplayer has also taken notice. As much as I appreciate his mature positivity and responsible perspective, the highlight of the album for me is the Waajeed-produced “SUPREME” featuring my favorite femcee of-the-moment Invincible and the most ubiquitous denizen of Detroit out right now Guilty Simpson talking tough over a vicious break and an ill interpolation of the Eurythmics “Sweet Dreams” synth riff. Go to Okayplayer’s Blogarhythms for July 27 to read more.

Mae Day “Somethin’s Gotta Give” reviewed
2007-07-02 15:36:53
Tamara Warren of the Detroit Free Press reviews Mae Day’s Somethin’s Gotta Give - the Sick Notes artist’s debut album. Her flow is infectious on bouncy cuts like “Like Hey,” which features the usual lyrical boasts: “It’s like ‘Cheers,’/ Everybody knows her name,” she taunts on the track that also features Tone Tone. Her vocals are breathy, and at times, she almost sings her hooks, a concept that works well on “Action,” where she is backed by the soulful voice of L’Renee. A samba beat sets off “B.A.B. Why?,” which has dance floor written all over it. Mae Day has attitude, but her delivery is refreshing and light — a strong new voice from the Detroit hip-hop scene.

Asylum 7 “Politicks” audio
2007-06-30 15:34:24
Self-described advocate of “quality hip hop”, Asylum 7, with “Poli-ticks” off of his Brown Study EP. Produced by Sleepy Biggs. Hear the message. Asylum 7 in the Metro Times: Primordial ooze: Asylum 7 got his start making music on the infamous Runyon Avenue on Detroit’s east side. His blue-collar style of hip-hop is rooted in fact, not fiction, and this dude is one of the most socially aware MC’s in the area right now. Why you should really care: “Because the music is honest, yo! It’s not your typical radio and club shit. My music isn’t vain, and it’s not fabricated either. It’s the epitome of honest music created from the soul. Good lyricism without the profanity and misogynistic nonsense.” The single: His recently released EP, Brown Study, doesn’t have a lead single, and that’s exactly the way he wants it. According to A7, he wants the whole product to stand out as one musical offering to the world.
