What are you looking at?
2007-06-29 09:03:00
A Northern Green Anole glares back at me from one of the support beams on my porch. The Green Anole (Anolis carolinensis), the only anole native to the state of Florida, is becoming harder to find thanks to competition from the heartier Brown Anole (Anolis sagrei) that was introduced to South Florida from Cuba and the Bahamas in the late 1800's. Learn more about invasive species, their impact on local ecosystems, and what you can do to help at The National Invasive Species Information Center.

A Brown Anole displays its colorful dewlap
2007-07-06 08:10:00
A common sight in backyards across South Florida, a Brown Anole displays its brightly colored dewlap. Not a native Floridian, the Brown Anole (Anolis sagrei) was introduced to the peninsula in the late 1800's from Cuba and the Bahamas. Heartier than its native cousin, the Brown Anole is at least partially responsible for the drastic decline in the Green Anole (the only anole species native to the state) population. Learn more about invasive species, their impact on local ecosystems, and what you can do to help at The National Invasive Species Information Center.

A Florida Mottled Duckling takes a swim
2007-07-12 16:25:00
Under the watchful eye of its mother (not pictured) a Florida Mottled Duckling takes a swim in one of the many water gardens at SeaWorld, Orlando. One of the many native species to take up residence inside Orlando's theme parks, the Florida Mottled Duck is currently being threatened by hybridization caused by domesticated Mallards released in the state. More information about the Florida Mottled Duck, the problem of hybridization, and what can be done to save this native species can be found at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's Mottled Duck page.

Little Blue Heron Revisited
2007-07-17 12:08:00
During a trip back through my archives, I stumbled upon the original of this picture of a Little Blue Heron at a watering hole in the Savannas Preserve State Park. While I liked my original version, I decided to revisit the photo. This time using a much lighter hand during post processing. This photo is the result. A little bit of a different crop and some light adjustments to the levels. I like this version better, what do you think?
