Day 22: Storyboards for script 2006-10-22 17:17:00
These are a bit out of sequence, so you'll have a fair bit of puzzle solving to make ead or tail of them. The script
is at www.tomacmuni.com/downloads.htm and is called My First One Thousand Lives. The pictures are from the first sequence. This is how I do my first personal use level of storyboarding, to generate new ideas, test things out and make something to show others for fresh opinions.
Day 21: Suffering 2006-10-21 11:20:00
Day 21 - Morale is low. Oppressive heat due to no air conditioning compiled with mosquito bite irrations. Lost work makes slow progress. Pencils are all we have to show for a slow day. We look forward to a change of weather and raised spirits. Coffee would be a welcome restorative, or sleep. Read more:Suffering
Day 20: Fun with 3D 2006-10-20 11:03:00
A while ago I sat down with someone who didn't know any 3D and tried to explain the very basics of how 3D modeling works. I made these drawings and decided to collect them together here. Sure, there are lots of books like the Art of Maya which introduce 3D concepts, but these were done real-time with a student and it was really fun to put as much as possible onto one sketchpad page.
Day 19: Pencils 2006-10-19 09:43:00
This is a pencil sketch I colour adjusted after photographing. I did it kind of quickly as I aim to get back to painting a bit longer piece where I'm just doing detail by detail and it's not enough to show yet, so hope to get that done by the end of the month. I did a horizontal flip of the pencil sketch and it's really wonky, so I guess I missed the mark. You get used to how a drawing looks, even it it's off. Read more:Pencils
Day 18: Higher Energy 2006-10-18 08:22:00
This is painting with Corel Painter, and it's all I had time to do since today we have meetings and an exhibition to attend. Students asked me to say which I thought was the best work, so I voted for the pretty girl's work. They were all good.Anyway, with this picture I plan to work it up more and spend a lot of time doing the clothing, so it's just an enlarged detail in this post. It took about 3 hours. Day 17: Low Energy 2006-10-17 12:27:00
Today I'm tired and drowsy. I couldn't get very much done.Tomorrow I have a meeting for the university which makes me nervous. The future as decided by others... but hopefully not any problems. There's a white board marker sketch and a pastel sketch, but I lostinterest in it. Read more:Energy
Day 16: Badminton 2006-10-16 07:33:00
I'm a badminton player, but I have not much grasp on technique the way the Asians do.There are even badminton students at the university who drill moves like it's karate. It's good to get out of the studio and play a group sport - I always hurt after it.This was about 15 minutes with coloured conte a paris on grey paper.
Day 15: Cartoon shading 2006-10-15 18:40:00
Today I went to buy some coffee and decided to take my camera with me and make some snaps. I chose one to paint over, and was trying to push it towards looking like the sort of shading in Akira. It took ages to get anywhere and I realised it's really a lot of work to flatten and colour adjust all the small details. But I like the image - as it turned out, I feel it's a nice settling point between photo and comic. This location is just outside my university, and I frequent the Family Mart to the extent that it's part of my programmed behaviour. The 'student' with the gun is the fictive aspect of the picture (Busan is strangely safe in real life). For some reason, in my photos there are usually no people, which is worth mentioning because in Korean cities there are masses of people in every direction, generally very happy looking.
This picture rewards viewing at full scale:

Day 23: Zpink! 2006-10-23 15:50:00
This is a rapid mock up for a comic panel, a bit humorous style. Today I watched Blueberry, a cowboy film/science fiction(?) which is a recreation of a Jean Giraud comic. It's really a strange combination of actors, but the mise en scene is great. It's also cool to see the indians talking without subtitles in their language.
One of my fond game ideas is to do with "going completely marco polo" -- heading off into lands that get stranger and stranger and more and more foreign until you're completely lost in a fantasy world and can't understand anything 'people' are saying or doing. And when you arrive back home, nobody recognises you. Except in a game, home is probably the real world.
Day 24: Black and White 2006-10-24 10:58:00
I wanted to do a two colour print style picture - I just ran out of time before class. A few of my colleagues were complaining about students spending time in class glued to the chat window, and I added the little comment one of them made. Read more:Black

Day 25: 3D Class 2006-10-25 15:54:00
A surprise today - a video instead of a picture. The image above is from the tutorial I made which instructs my students how to set up props for game characters to handle.
Can be found here.
The character is one I made and rigged and textured in 2005 at about Christmas time.I gave my students a task to have the character pick up the spear (because we'd beenlooking at how to control a character dealing with holding an object using constraints). So, I was pleasantly surprised when one student ì •í˜„ê·œ animated this wicked little move. It's really a case where somebody goes that bit further than required because they enjoy what they are doing. It's really nicely animated too.
Here's the clip made by ì •í˜„ê·œ: http://www.tomacmuni.com/30dayartist/pickspear.mov
Day 29: Map 2006-10-29 13:56:00
Yesterday I had to do work for the department's 3D animation pitch show, which involved taking 3D models and doing set dressing, adding little details to scenes and making sure they sat in the right place in Maya. For me it's dull work, since the show is a kid's show and the cutesy style just doesn't do it for me. It's also a pilot, which means that it has a limited chance to go anywhere. I suppose it looks nice but I'm the wrong audience for it. Afterwards I had no will to do anything - I think I crashed reading email, which is a first. I didn't even try to paint. This morning I had a debate with Ed Lee about motivation -- it was that and a mutual weighing up of working for someone else and working on one's own material. I suppose it's good to try and do both, on one side for some job security and on the other for personal freedom. At present I'm pleased to be teaching, because that's a lot less of a headache than having a producer on your back everyday. For a whi
Day 27: Couple minutes sketch 2006-10-27 10:49:00
This was light-hearted way of taking a bit of a day off really. No, not at all ... I thought, okay, it's my sister's birthday two days ago, she's got 3 kids and is on the other side of the planet. So I drew my sister (comic pencils style) and tried to accomplish something appealing in a couple of minutes
.Last night we went to visit a Korean academic who gave us an entertaining, learned explanation of why digital art is a bad descriptor for what I do (I wasn't sure he knows, but he knows where I work) -- a massive digression through Korean university politics, MIT university history, Karl Marx, philosophy of pure reason, you name it. Anyway, after it we went for dinner and in the restaurant there's a little bird in a nest in a cage just sitting there looking really cute back out at us. So I added the little bird to the hair in the picture of my sister. See, the academic part isn't important at all. Just my sister and the little bird. ;) Read more:sketch
Day 26: Painting Detail 2006-10-26 09:59:00 I'm posting this now because I have some busy days coming up doing work for other people. This isn't finished yet, but it's the bulk of work done. Now I can do little edits here and there to fix things up and make it look nicer. The hard part has been simply getting everything down because the the goal of this painting was to push my patience and see how carefully I could paint rather than feeling rushed for time as usual. I've posted the layers. This has taken about two weeks I guess (I posted the face detail a while ago here), and has been taking a couple of hours a day. The appeal for me in this picture is the mix of hair, skin, fur, shiny boots with texture, lace, and the strings on the scarf. I still need to paint the lace detail on the front of the scarf. The current version includes some global value changes and smoothing of the skin paintstrokes. I'm happy with the impression it makes, but am not sure what it will do for other people - this reduced size loses a lo Read more:Painting

Day 30: Rapid Fire .. oops. 2006-10-30 16:24:00
This is a pencil sketch - maybe ten minutes on A3 paper that I coloured digitally.I like the folds in her belly and her wild hair. I added the photo of the drawing. The eyes are different vibe - but since I shaded over them on paper I had do digitally put in eyeballs. I don't often erase on paper for this kind of quicky, which is why the extra arm is there, and some underdrawing lines. It has it's own feel, but it's always a challenge to push it in photoshop.
I guess this is the penultimate day for me on 30 Day Artist.October has 31 days so tomorrow I hope me and Chin Yew can go about putting all the month's work into one post as is the usual thing it seems. I'll give some more thoughts on ending up then.Tomorrow I teach, so I have a feeling preparing lessons will take up art time. Read more:Rapid

Day01- Warming up. 2006-11-01 14:38:00 First of all, I would like to thank cy and ming to offer me such a good opportunity to explore the fun of creating personal work again.
Good evening. It's been awhile, after a long break of not creating personal work since i've been engaged myself in the world of commercial 2 years ago.
And I know that I'm going to create a series of car imagery for the next days with different theme. I got a bit lost today after such a long break. I didn't do any sketch before I get my hands busy infront of the computer. I don't quite like the composition, hopefully it's gonnabe better for the next one.
Here is the work of the day.
Just in case that somebody may misunderstand that this is a photograph, I would like to show the 3D wireframe of the image above. ;)
I am not good in expressing myself, perhaps I will write more and more forthe coming days.I would like to talk about car abit more here. I like car but itdoesn't mean I like to own a nice one. I like to spend countless hour to st
Day02- Drift in the universe 2006-11-03 04:53:00 I was sick. I know is late to post.
My house got electricity interference yesterday,I started to work at 9pm. and send my work to render at 3'am.
I woke up at 9am this morning. Continue to touch up day2 pieceuntil 11a.m.
Today, time is tide, i got to attend math tuition 8pm andI haven't been done any home assignment yet......
Well, is about to examine my time management skill now.
Here is my day02 piece, done in rush, not really satisfy......well, I will spend more time this weekend .....
Title of this piece:-" drift in the universe "
" A whole nother universe is a mystery " from the lyric of wishful thinking, duncan sheik.I will talk about this topic more and more for the coming posts........
Catch up later, is time to do my math assignment... blah!!! Read more:Drift
Day03- Threshold 2006-11-04 07:26:00 Here is day03 piece.
Work Title:- "Threshold
"
Actually, I have shifted the order of timeframe a bit. Today piece is actuallythe past of yesterday piece. He is entering the threshold with expectations. He is a boy full of curiousity. He was so tempted to enter the next dimension.
Now, he make it.Unknown path is waiting for him........................Stay tune, day04 is coming.
My workplace.
Day04- Maze 2006-11-04 18:51:00 Work Title:- " Maze "
This piece looks very 80's sci-fi. I intended to make it like that.I like it very much. It reminds me of my childhood. But the 3d looks abit dated. ;)
Back to the story, the little boy just acrossed the threshold. He see a huge maze right infront of him.
Is the maze really exist? or he had chose to see the maze?He is lost.... But he choose to.................. Keep up day05.
Almost 2:00am, I got an appointment this morning.Childhood close friend called me for breakfast. We gonna drive all the way from kulim to penang, just for a plate of the famous BBQ Pork rice.
Cya, gotta continue the story.............
Day05- Reflection in the maze. 2006-11-06 13:17:00 As we know that the surface of a car is reflective. The appearance of a car is varied from time to time based on its surrounding. Therefore, the surrounding determine the appearance of a car. That's the way of the car grab attention from its surrounding because of its sleek and reflective capability.
Here Day05 piece.
Work Title:- " Reflection in the maze "
Continue from day04, he chose to enter the maze.He believe he can seek for the truth in the maze.He wouldn't know that the wall of the maze is reflective, until he has entered it.Well, well, well, he is reflective too.He is confused........
Some audience is clever enough to tell what's happen next. This story is parallel. This story is architypal.... thsi story is familiar....................
But I've have choosen to complete this story.
Day06- Exit? 2006-11-07 13:38:00 Unfortunately, my computer motherboard blown up due to the electricity
inteference yesterday.
I have sent it to fix this afternoon.
no computer go analog...... ? erm... i have a laptop but not good enough
to do 3d.
I hand drawn my day06 piece.
He has spent some times wandering in the maze.
As he intended to seek for the truth in the maze..
The more he wander the more confuss he is..
He is
Day07- Away 2006-11-08 15:10:00 Work Title:- " Away "
He move as fast as he could, as long as he is far away from the maze.
He is angry.
He is angry of not being able to leave his anger behind.
Now, he just want to move, move like a raging bull.
He doesn't know when to stop....................................
He believe that as long as he is far away from the maze,
the serenity is close.
But....................
Day08- Horizon 2006-11-09 14:56:00
Work Title:- " Horizon "
The horizon,It is far, It is close. He see it but never reached.
The horizon,It separates the sky and the sea, this is how it reminds him that he never break the boundry.
No matter how fast he moves, he never get close to the horizon. This is the synchronicity of the opposite, the law of universe.........
Day09- Commercial Break 2006-11-10 11:46:00
Work Title:- " CommercialBreak
"
Hey yo! My machine is back. I just want to do my car-paint study today. But I've never give up to do my hand-drawing.Be honest, I've been addicted to draw... :)
Getting close to what i expected the car paint shader, but still got some minor things to tweak.
Day10- BackStreet Boy 2006-11-13 07:25:00 Here Day10 post.
Title:- " I want it that way. "
Wireframe mode.
Nothing much to say today, gonna say goodbye to those cg car matching real-world background renders. Gotta do something different............ tomorrow onwards... Read more:BackStreet
Day11- Drive Me Crazy 2006-11-13 20:28:00 Work:- " Drive Me Crazy
"
I went a little bit mad today, full-force experimentation. To be honest, this is my real-style. The past ten-days is just warmed up.
About today piece, the visual represents my psychic reality which inherited from M.C. Escher.Influenced a little bit by the grafitti.
Plan to do an animation after this based on the visual today.Just imagine the field of view of the 3d camera as well asthe focal length is animated simultaneously.
Obviously, the perspective of this image has been distorted.More funky stuff is coming....... I hope I don't bore you today.
Day12- Cold wind blowing away my shattered heart. 2006-11-14 20:23:00
Cold wind blowing away my shattered
heart. Welcome to the dark!!!
Oh yea, we always can choose whetheror not to enter the dark side.
The sun is gone, but i've a light.
The day is done, but i had some fun.
Day13- Escape from the hell 2006-11-16 15:00:00
As the work show above, you guys can tell I am a hollywood VFX freak.Since I was in secondary school, I have a dream. My dream is to be a VFX artist work for feature film.Too bad, this dream has not been come true yet......But now, I am enjoy doing what I love to do at home.I like to blow thing up!!!!!!!!
Here is the wireframe.(As every CG artist like to show their wireframe heh!)
Here is the screenshot of my custom built fireball shader done in houdini.I love houdini. The more i use the software the more love it.

Day14- Generative Abstract 01 2006-11-18 08:34:00
Woohoo, back to 3d abstract today.Back to the basic of form study, grid system.
I'm experimenting on some abstract pattern with somesimple math, with the basic math function in houdini likesin( ), cosine( ), and tan( ).
I'm gonna create a series of abstract imagerywhich i called it "fun with math".
Stay tune, some funky stuff is coming. Read more:Abstract
