Laser Printers Are Doomed To Extinct? 2007-06-27 14:39:25 Laser printing technology has long been a choice for medium and enterprise sized businesses, and that has been reasonable choice. Printing machines utilizing laser delivered high quality output at, which is crucial for larger businesses, high speed. Enter any corporate or government office to see those buzzing cubes of plastic cover and electronic inside – laser printers, copiers, and multifunction machines.
Laser has been absolutely dominating office premises, limiting inkjet printer use to home and small offices. One of the reasons of laser printers dominations was incredibly low price of black and white, printouts compared to those produced by inkjet printer. Yes, inkjet were perfect for accurate reproduction of colors, so important in a field of, say, professional photography.
However, with recent inkjet technology advancements, inkjet printers are easy to enter medium and large business sector and even dominate it.

Canon Pixma MP530 2007-06-26 18:08:07 Canon Pixma MP530 is another ‘omnipotent’ device combining functions of printer, copier, scanner and fax. Just like most printers of this class, Pixma MP530 is designed to satisfy the need of home users or small office.
However, there are, or I’d rather say, there are not, a couple of things that an office user might find useful. Media card slots and a color LCD are missing from this model, but that may not be a problem if you used PC before printing photos.
Canon Pixma MP530 faxing abilities include 40 programmable speed-dial numbers, 33.6 kbps of faxing speed and 150-page memory. The paper capacities are modest, but enough for target users: cassette and paper feeder for 150 sheets each and a 30 sheets automatic document feeder.
The printer employs five cartridges system - 3 cartridges for main color and two cartridges for dye-based and pigment-based black inks. Canon Pixma MP530 supports maximum resolution of 9600dpi x 2400dpi and can print as fast as 29 monochrome Read more:Canon
People Throw More Than 50% of Ink Away, Epson says 2007-06-21 15:33:47 Studies, researches and surveys… how little we would knew without them. Another test of ink cartridges efficiency was commissioned by TÜV Rheinland for Epson
. The idea of the test was to find out how much ink is actually wasted every time a cartridge is thrown away.
The thing is, many inkjet printer and multifunctions use multi-ink cartridges, e.g. cartridges containing three or more color. When you print photos or graphics, one color inevitably runs out faster than others, and printer says, “Oops, you’re out of ink”. However, cartridge usually does contain some amount of other than depleted colors. Despites, you need to go shopping for another cartridge to print further.
Not only wasted cartridges with ink do cost you more in terms of upfront cash and cost-per-page effectiveness, they are also environmentally more hazardous than just empty cartridge. With single-color cartridges there’s no such problem, the ink is used completely (well, actually not completely, I won’ Read more:Throw

The printer found was HP DesignJet 10000. All reproductions were printed on a special vinyl media, which combined with waterproof laminating provides three years of fade resistance.
The largest painting cost around $400 to print, however that was still cost effective.

Printer Cartridges To Get Encrypted 2007-06-29 02:12:54 Long time ago printer makers armed with Gillette business model, charging small upfront price for an inkjet printer, but making up the money on selling cartridges for that printer. In some cases, a set of cartridges could cost as much as the printer itself. So printer makers would live happily ever after, if it were not for third-party cartridge manufacturers.
Some of the third-party manufacturers are fair business that refill cartridges and resell them, offering many consumers and businesses cheaper alternatives. Others, however, are involved in illegal practices, such as
refilling used cartridges and selling them as “new” - instead of as remanufactured

Genuine Inks Last Longer 2007-07-02 03:20:25 This post may be interesting to you if you own a Canon or Epson inkjet printer and still can’t decide whether to use genuine of compatible inks to print your photos. This post will, probably, make you feel disappointed if own a Canon or Epson inkjet printer and chose compatible inks to capture the moments of your life into paper with compatible inks. This post will make you feel proud of using genuine inks for your Canon or Epson printer.
Let’s get to the point. Allion Test Labs, Inc. a Taiwan-based company that verifies product quality and interoperability of PCs and PC peripherals, has tested color fading of inkjet-printed photos using OEM inks and third-party manufacturer’s inks. Allion was hired to do the test as independent tester and didn’t reveal the relations between test results and the ink manufacturers names. It’s only known that the evaluation was done using two printers: one by Seiko Epson Corp, the other by Canon Inc.

ISO Ink Cartridge Standard Has Flaws, HP claims 2007-07-01 22:25:11 Not so long ago, in December 2006, International Standard
ization Organization finally gave us, customers, a single standard to estimate cartridge performance and thus the printing costs. Before that, printer manufacturers used various ways to determine how many pages a cartridge would print. It was merely impossible to calculate true sum money spent on cartridges during printer’s lifespan, decisive information for many customers.
The standard was created and accepted by a consortium of printer manufacturers, including such major brand as HP, Canon, Epson and Lexmark. During the test, adopted into standard, both black and color cartridges are run continuously, until each of the cartridges is out of ink, according to printer message.
However, HP said some oversights and time constrictions accepted in the standard hinder a true measurement of cost of ownership. Whitney Loper, writing systems engineer at HP said to PCWorld.co.uk:

Kyocera Claims HP’s Advertisement False 2007-07-09 05:53:01 Kyocera, a Japanese printer manufacturer, has filed an official complaint with Advertising Standards Authority in the US blaming recent HP advertisement of being “disingenuous”.
The ad for HP Color LaserJet CP3505 claims that toner cartridge is the only part of printer needing replacement. Generally, laser printers require a printing drum to be regularly changed, too. However, the ad says nothing about that very drum being included along with its cost into toner cartridge of that printer model, and thus thrown away with deployed cartridge. Nor does the ad warn that HP is not responsible for replacing permanent parts once the warranty is over, though such information is usually given in fine print in foot note, if on paper.
Rob Enderle, a printer analyst and chief of a San Jose-based research firm Enderle Group, said:
“The printer companies, particularly the smaller ones, are trying to stand out and it looks like some are picking fights to get visibility for what makes

Why Inkjet Images May Vanish Over Time? 2007-07-10 15:21:16 Printing digital photos at home has become a common thing. We capture moments of our life with a camera, print them in vivid color with an inkjet printer and share them with our friends. To say “Look how much fun we had at the party” is all most pictures are for. “Look what precise, bright and shiny colors my printer can print” is what you may say if you’re a bit on geek side.
Most of us are not really concerned about how long the photo will last. But some people are.
The thing is, inkjet prints dominate photography now, and there’s no a standard for testing the permanence of inkjet prints and interpreting the results. Variety of inkjets on the market makes it harder for experts to give advice, so customers face a hard task purchasing an inkjet printer that would definitely produce durable photos.
Current situation with color inkjet prints implicate many factors. Initially, inkjet were designed to print graph-and-chart kind of things, something not intended to last more tha Read more:Images
New Printer Smells Like a Rose 2007-07-17 06:01:28 Did you even wonder what printing pages feel like? They are warm from fuser heat and smell like… well, they, probably, smell of just fused toner. Boring, right? Now imagine if a page you got took from printer gives off fragrances of lavender or roses. Ladies and gentlemen, please meet a perfumed printer.
Sagem Communication makes its effort to improve the workplace atmosphere and presents a new concept in office aromatherapy: the Zen Cube. The cube attaches to the machine’s ventilation slots and diffuses a perfume specially developed by aroma therapists:
“The perfume is diffused upon each printing (or receiving of a fax), with the activation of the ventilation system. The warm air (27° C) expelled by the machine slowly and steadily diffuses the perfume in the office via the Zen Cube, thereby creating a new workplace atmosphere.”

Inkjet Printers Use 90% Less Power 2007-07-16 00:02:47 When we speak of printer cost efficiency, first think we consider is user’s printing needs. If lots of monochrome printing is required, one would recommend to have a laser black-and-white printer. For occasional 2 to 5 pages printing at home, an inkjet printer would do just fine. Once we decided on printer type, next thing coming is price and cost-per-pages effectiveness of cartridges used. That is, how much you pay for a cartridge and how many pages it would print for the money.
Hardware issues aside, there are many printing tips on the internet from users, experts and even manufacturers on how to save ink and money: using separate cartridges, printing in draft mode, choosing paper saving layouts, etc. Google returns 69,900,000 pages for “printing tips”, just check them out.
One factor I’ve never heard mentioned is power consummation.
Darren Yates from Australian Techlogg.com tested home appliances and electronic devices to measure how much power they actually consume. The p
Your Printer Is Spying On You 2007-07-19 06:16:08 If you considered yourself a happy owner of a color laser printer, you probably won’t be so happy any longer.
In 2005 Electronic Frontier Foundation, an organization supporting customers’ freedoms in the world of electronics, made a discovery that didn’t have much publicity. Every document printed on most color laser printers includes a set of yellow dots used to identify the printer. These dots are invisible to naked eye, but can be clearly seen under microscope or intense blue light.
The dots make up a pattern unique to each printer, so it’s possible to identify the serial number, make and model of printer. Given that most of color laser printers sell directly from the manufacturer or through well-documented service providers, it becomes easy to track the owner of printer. So, everything you print can, and pretty much will, be used against you.
Why on earth, something like this would happen? One of the reasons why might be an agreement of US government and most printer manufa Read more:Printer

Study Shows Many Cartridges Are Still Wasted 2007-07-27 04:30:58 Most of us have a printer that, of course, uses cartridges to print. No big deal. Sooner or later, those cartridges get empty and utilized. This is amazing, but with current level of environment care and protection, most printer cartridges end up in landfill. The share of cartridges that are recycled or reused in a way, don’t even reach 50%, according to a new research done by InfoTrends.
The notorious “razor and blades” business model of printer makers suggests selling cheap hardware and making up on printer supplies. That has little to do with supporting environmental goals, since such approach generates more and more new toner and cartridges. On the other hand, original equipment manufacturers prohibit third parties re-manufacturers in every way from collecting, re-filling and recycling cartridges.
According to the InfoTrends research, gigantic amount of printer cartridges are used daily, and both original and third party manufacturers are eager to collect the largest amount o Read more:Study

Survey Reveals How Often Home Printers Are Used 2007-07-26 07:04:07 Printer makers aggressively advertise and market the printing devices they produce. It is a common sight when an inkjet printer sells for pennies, even in the red. Prices for laser printers and copiers are constantly dropping too, making the devices more affordable to increasing number of customers. Obviously, this is supposed to create a favorable environment for digital printing at home.
However, a survey shows that among 7.7 billion of digitally printed materials such as brochures, postcards, business cards, etc. in 2007, only 48% are produced at home. Compared to last year’s 64%, this is a substantial decrease. Surprising, isn’t it?
The decrease in home printing, in turn, caused printer manufacturers to drop price up to 30% on personal printers to make them more appealing to customers. Printer manufacturers are doing a great job convincing consumers to try printing their materials at home.
If you are a printer owner, you, probably, know that consumables cost can easily pull ou Read more:Often
Laser Printers Dangerous To Health Like Cigarettes 2007-08-01 03:24:39 We are not afraid of “laser” in laser printers, because it is highly unlikely one would get burnt with it. Yet, laser printer is the device that may be a source of “phantom menace”.
A group of Australian scientists revealed that office laser printers could be causing as much danger to the lung as cigarettes do. It is all a matter of ultra-fine particles contained in printer toner. Lidia Morawska, a professor from Queensland University of Technology and one of the study heads, comments on the discovery:
Ultra-fine particles are of most concern because they can penetrate deep into the lungs where they can pose a significant health threat. These particles are tiny like cigarette smoke particles and, when deep inside the lung, they do the same amount of damage. The health effects from inhaling ultra-fine particles depend on particle composition, but the results can range from respiratory irritation to more severe illness such as cardiovascular problems or cancer.

Zink Updates Info On Upcoming Products 2007-08-24 02:33:24 In January, 2007 Zink Imaging announced it was developing a technology that would enable mobile printing with out a drop of ink. The core of the technology was paper with incorporated color crystals that would be activated by heat of printhead. The resulting device should be similar to Polaroid cameras, combining photo camera and printer in one unit. Actually, both Zink and its innovation are successors of Polaroid. Zink started as a project inside Polaroid, now it’s an independent company employing some of ex-Polaroid specialists.
After the January announcement, there has been no news from the company, except for the purchase of a factory previously run by Konica Minolta. Now Zink shed some light onto what kind of products it’s going to release.
First off, a combined digital camera and printer. It turns out, Zink is not the first company (except Polaroid, of course) to try to combine the function of these two devices in one. FujiFilm and Olympus each released one model in late 1 Read more:Upcoming

All Quiet In HP Printers 2007-08-24 00:20:34 In one of my previous posts I wrote about the results of a study done by Australian researchers. According to the study, laser printers seem to be emitting into air presumably particles hazardous to health. And it turned out that majority (12 of 13) of tested printer happened to be made by HP.
