The Idea of Printed Organs is Coming True
2007-11-08 08:21:12
The idea of creating artificial body organs is not new. It has been vastly developed in sci-fi literature, where the very process of creation was surrendered to the imagination of the author. Few people know that scientists have long been into this area and have reached some positive results. Science Daily reports that Gabor Forgacs, a professor of physics in the MU College of Arts and Science, has been developing and perfecting the process of “printing” tissues, aiming at building human organs. In his recent study, Forgacs showed that creating tissue structures by means of printing maintain the properties of the composing cells, and the very process resembles the way living tissues are created in nature. The researchers used bio-ink particles, or spheres with 10,000 to 40,000 cells, and “printed” them on sheets of special “bio-paper.” The spheres then began to fuse in the bio-paper into one structure, pretty much like drops of water stick together into a larger drop of wat

Printing Industry Overview
2007-11-15 06:32:04
HP claimed it’s giving up its camera manufacturing business. Instead the company plans to focus more resources on Print 2.0 – the new web-centered printing concept. However, the company is going to maintain the brand and now is looking for an OEM partner that will design, build and distribute digital cameras under HP label. HP wants to accelerate its investment in Print 2.0 initiative, which the company unveiled in May at its Imaging and Printing Conference in New York. According to HP, 53 trillion pages will be printed in 2010, creating a market valued at more than $296 billion. Most part of those pages is to be printed from the Web. HP’s Print 2.0 strategy is focused on using Web-based services to get a significant share of the growing number of digital pages printed each year. This move of HP seems very logical, I mean who ever bought HP digital cameras? Purchasing future revenues, HP also keeps up with current developments. Researchers from Palo Alto have created toner partic

World’s Widest Printhead
2007-11-16 08:15:03
Tonejet, a developer of digital printing process, has announced its revolutionary extra-wide printhead. The 172mm-wide head, claimed to be the world’s widest integral printhead has been developed in cooperation with a number of partners. The system is based on electrostatic drop-on-demand deposition technology that doesn’t have nozzles, but uses a very fine jet of concentrated ink to create a robust, thin and flexible layer that renders unnecessary the labels on curved or uneven surfaces. The new printhead allos to create high-quality designs onto virtually any type of absorbing or non-absorbing substrate at high speed. Here is an example of a image printed on a feather! The technology is going to find its first application in packaging, with printed products due to hit the market in the course of the coming year. Tonejet said that the main reason they chose packaging is because it’s a large market and many packaging companies want to apply digital technolog

History of Inkjet Printers Development. Part 1.
2007-11-21 08:26:27
The inkjet printer has come a long way from a supplementary project inside a hi-tech corporation to most popular computer printing device. If you own a printer at home, the chances are good it’s an inkjet printer. Nowadays, inkjet printers are the most popular printing device for home and small office use, but it has not always been like that. From the 1960s into the 1980s computer printing was dominated by dot-matrix printers. Some of them can still found around. Unfortunately, dot-matrix still used an impact method for printing (pretty much like typewriters), so the problem of noise and speed limitations remained. With word processing getting more and more important, a fast, quiet, high-quality printer became required. In the early 1980s, introduction of the laser printer met that need. By eliminating the need for physical impact against a ribbon, laser printers achieved much higher speeds and were able to work in almost silence. As personal computers grew popular during the 1980s,

New Technology Promises Cheaper Microchips and Larger Displays
2007-11-26 08:07:01
California-based company has developed a technology that may enable cheap electronic microchips and large displays. As time passed, inkjet printing technology finds application in areas having little or nothing to do with producing texts, graphics or photos. Inkjet printers have been successfully adopted into bioengineering (for printing tissues of human body) and electronics (for printing electronic circuits). These are two industries that require high precision in manipulation with ultra-fine particles, just what inkjet technology can do. Now let’s get to the point. A California-based company named Kovio announced a new process that can be used for printing memory and logic chips transistors. This technology is particularly convenient as it uses commercial printing equipment such as inkjet printers, which make the production of microchips cheap and easy. Currently, Kovio’s method uses several types of commercial printers, including inkjet models. Also, the company has developed a

Study Finds Consumers Overpay For Printer Ink Tremendously
2007-11-22 08:58:06
Recent study show customers have no basis for comparison when buying printers, which results in $6 billion overpay on ink every year. The American Consumer Institute released a new white paper entitled “Inkjet Prices, Printing Costs and Consumer Welfare” disclosing pricing strategies adopted within the inkjet industry. This is the first document made by public organization (we don’t consider numerous articles on the topic in magazines and sites by independent authors). Inkjet printers are usually under-priced or even sell in the red to make them more appealing for purchase. However, the manufacturers make up the profit on overpriced ink, and consumers are left with no choice and spend hundreds of extra dollars to operate the printers. The printer ink is currently one of the most expensive liquids in the world. The price of it can be compared with that of the world’s finest champagne, gasoline and most luxury fragrances. Currently, there’s no standardized printer ink unit

Print Your Photos From… TV
2007-11-27 07:05:02
You’ve, probably, heard or seen those compact photo printers that promise photo-lab quality printing at home. You may even own one. These standalone printers are designed so you can create images without help of computer, though, personally, I don’t think this is a good idea. Anyway, those printers have tiny (I know, manufacturers call them large) LCD-display that is supposed to let you preview the snapshots before print and perform some minor photo editing. Never took this feature seriously, because nothing compares to full-size display. I suppose the same idea came to both Epson and Philips, too. The two companies together have developed a new product called PhotoViewer. Using PhotoViewer you can (guess what?) view photos on your TV screen and then print the ones you liked on a printer. Despite your expectations, PhotoViewer can be connected to any TV-set, however, the printer would be Epson, precisely Epson PictureMate PM240.  The PhotoViewer is actually a black glossy box wit

Star of Samsung And Afterlife of Toner Cartridge
2007-12-03 08:36:39
Just like any other industry, printers and printer supplies manufacturing produces lots of waste. The problem of supplies, that is toner and ink cartridges, is nowadays solved by remanufacturing or recycling. Remanufacturing, roughly put, is a process of reconstructing of a cartridge; we’ve discussed it our previous article, you can read it to get the details. Recycling means physical destruction of an object into raw material and creating new items from it. And it is recycling that is the topic of today’s post. Let’s suppose you like Samsung laser printers so much that you own one. Now let’s assume you are so green that mere idea of empty cartridges going into landfill makes you turn red. All that provided, there is a really good news for you. Just the other day Samsung launched the STAR program, which stands for Samsung Takeback And Recycle program. This program offers free return and recycling of empty Samsung toner cartridges and two options to do so. The first way is to lo

HP and Staples Are Sued for Expensive Ink
2007-12-20 07:14:40
When it comes to printer ink market, most lawsuits are file by OEM cartridges manufacturers against third-party makers of compatible or generic cartridges. But this is not always true. According to Arstechnica, a man named Ranjit Bedi filed a class-action lawsuit against printer maker HP and office supply retailer Staples . He contends both firms broke antitrust laws in collaborating on the sale of replacement ink-jet cartridges. The plaintiff also claims HP paid Staples $100 million to seize selling third-party ink cartridges, however, from the suit it's not clear how Bedi figured that out. Average price of printer ink is $8000 per gallon making it one of most expensive liquids in the world and most profitable business for printer makers. So it's no surprise that OEM cartridge manufacturers protect their business in every way they can. And so far they win in most cases. In his suit, Bedi asks for unspecified damages and an injunction barring the two companies from engaging in antic

Ricoh Aficio SP C400DN Color Laser Printer
2007-12-19 06:19:39
There is never a day that passes by printer manufacturers release new model. Supporting this tradition, Ricoh introduced Aficio SP C400DN, a color laser printer for small businesses. Apart from "high-quality output", "superior performance", "high productivity" and other meaningless phrases, there is something else to know about this printing. When printer is turned on, it takes only 10 seconds to warm up for black & white prints, and 15 seconds for color. Should you assign the Aficio SP C400DN a large task, you will see it reaching printing speed of 26 pages per minute (ppm) in both color and monochrome. And the 600MHz controller helps output large files quickly. If you switch from the draft mode, it is possible to get 1200×1200 dpi resolution for the prints. It's worth mentioning that the large printing task would be halted after 1,750 pages. This is the standard paper capacity of Aficio SP C400DN. However this figure can be increased by adding more paper drawers,

How to Detect and Fix Problems with Laser Monochrome Printing. Part 3
2007-12-17 05:17:58
Previously on ”How to Detect and Fix Problems with Laser Monochrome Printing ” we examined toner cartidge components and reviewed several possible reasons of printing problems. Today we shall pick up from where we left last time. 3. Magnetic Roller This roller in HP printer is a metal cylinder covered with special coating with a magnetized bar inside. This part rarely gets out of order. For most part dirty print is caused by toner dosing. The dirt "gives" a stripe to magnetic roller, thus, "taking away" a stripe from image on prints: One of the signs of incorrect toner dosing is spilling of toner into the split between the metering blade and the magnetic roller: Toner is spilled onto magnetic roller, which transfers the toner on photo drum. Photo drum, in turn, transfers the toner on paper, just like it should. This is how those needless stripes occur along the length of the page. The stripes may be black, if the split is wider than necessary for tone

How to Detect and Fix Problems with Laser Monochrome Printing. Part 2
2007-12-14 06:30:47
Continuation of part 1 This time we shall consider toner cartridge defects, their aftermath and ways to fix them. Previously we found that cartridge consists of several part. Despite the small amount of parts, there are enough factors affecting quality of printing. 1. Organic Photo Conductor (OPC) OPC is also known as photo drum, drum, photoreceptor or photoconductor. On its surface a toner image to be transferred to paper is created. This dictates peculiarities of its functioning. Problem with photo drum of cartridge for Hewlett-Packard Laser Jet 1200 printer. Most common defect is black patterns appearing on the print's edges. This means the photoreceptor is critically worn out. Photo sensitive coating is rubbed off, and toner first adheres to "naked" drum and then gets transferred to paper. This is how the worn-out looks like on the photoreceptor. Factually, this is a physical process of drum coating rubbing against paper and toner. Unfortunately, the problem can only be

How to Detect and Fix Problems with Laser Monochrome Printing
2007-12-13 04:33:06
This article covers common issues that rise during the use of most toner cartridges. For practical purposes the cartridge examined is made by Hewlett-Packard and there are reasons for that. First, this brand has long been a leader on printer market. Second, no one ever cancelled cartridge refilling which is widely used by small business and home offices. What you see above is a perfect test page. Of course, it's a 99% merit of new original cartridge. Original makers of printer consumables have a smoothly running production and high-level quality management. Up to 2% of total output is tiny figure for rejection rate provided by major brands. However, that doesn't mean third-party manufacturers make cheap and inferior products. Compatible printer cartridges can also be reliable in use. It's all a matter of specific brand, it's quality management and, surely, the warranty. Considering that cartridges get refilled, it come as no surprise that after 5-7 refills printing artifacts

Results of “Cost-of-Ink-Per-Page” Analysis Favor Kodak Inks
2007-12-10 07:40:14
New cost-of-ink-per-page analysis of ink cartridges is a new way for customers to estimate their printing costs. QualityLogic, a company providing quality assurance and control services, reported it had completed Cost-of-Ink-Per-Page (CoIPP) Analysis for the Eastman Kodak Company. CoIPP Analysis uses cartridge cost and page-yield to calculate and compare the cost of ink required to print one page on Kodak EASYSHARE 5100, 5300 and 5500 All-in-One Printers to 11 competing printers. Page-yield is determined by Certified Page-Yield Test Program, QualityLogic’s special software based on ISO standards determines. Cartridge prices in UK, France, and Germany were provided by IDC, a provider of independent market intelligence. QualityLogic published a paper that you can view for details, but here is a briefly overview of what results of the analysis show. Naturally, all three Kodak's printers demonstrate lowest cost of ink per page in monochrome, color and photo printing. For instance

Now Prints Can Have Unlimited Size (+video)
2007-12-25 03:00:45
Students of Georgia Institute of Technology has created a robot named PrintBot that can print out images of virtually unlimited sizes. On their site, Instructibles.com, they published a detailed step-by-step printer creation guide. The PrintBot uses a printhead from an Epson inkjet printer (as it was expected to use it, the printhead, not Epson) and Talcum powder instead of inks. The printer is said to support wireless remote control and is based on iRobot Create, which, in turn, is analog of iRobot Roomba vacuum cleaning robot. This device can perform on almost any horizontal faces, and the creators suggest using it for sidewalk painting and advertisement. I wonder if this idea can be transformed for document printing. For instance, instead of paper running through the printer, a smal printing bot creates an image or a text line-by-line on a sheet of paper. Just like living pen. One could give it a ‘handwriting’ (as far asthis term can be applied to a printer robot) style
