New Printers Annouced. Trios From Epson and Canon.
2007-08-22 06:19:11
Printer makers just can’t stop pleasing their customers with new releases. Epson USA introduced three new Hi-Definition printers. Epson Stylus Photo R280 is a single-function photo printer capable of printing on wide media (up to 8.5″ x 44″) and CDs and DVDs. It features very fast speed – up to 38 ppm in black and 37 ppm in color at maximum resolution of 5760 x 1440 dpi. Epson’s Stylus Photo RX595 and Stylus Photo RX680 are multifunctional printers that can copy and scan. Both printers have a built-in 2.5” LCD preview screen and support direct print from memory cards and PictBridge-enabled cameras. Stylus Photo RX595 perform as fast as R280, while RX680 is faster – it prints 40 ppm in black and white (color printing rate is that same). The printers also support maximum resolution of 5760 x 1440 dpi. Printing speed put aside, the new devices seem pretty ordinary, so where “Hi-Definition” come from? The trick is in use of Advanced MicroPiezo printhead that produ

How An Inkjet Can Be Used Beyond Document Printing
2007-08-22 05:29:33
What do you think your inkjet printer can create? Pages of black text? OK. Documents with color graphics? All right. Photos of you having fun in backyard? Absolutely! Anything else? You surely feel puzzled, however an inkjet printer can do a lot more. And there are people who know what this ‘more’ is. A UK start-up, Polymertronics, develops a method that combines organic semiconductor fabrication technology with ultra-violet (UV) curing techniques. Simply put, this means there is a way to print electronics on a variety on media including vinyl, plastics, glass and metal. In particular, using this method one can create embedded light emitting diodes (OLEDS) and touch sensitive panels. The crucial thing about the technique is that it implies using existing printing equipment. This automatically creates a sales market for Polymertronics products and makes them (products) more cost effective. Printed electronics sounds exiting, but hey, what do you think of printed bones? The Toner Is Out There Or How To Find Printing Cartridges With Toner Cartridge Depot
2007-09-20 07:42:48
Every time we go online, we expect the web to give us something new. Some news we receive “automatically”, like the e-mail messages from your friends or newsletters from your favorite website. Other information doesn’t come easy. To find it we often have to make a search. The search is what modern Internet relies on. Searching engines like Google, Yahoo or MSN has become an integral part on everyday life online. Can you imaging yourself digging through billions and billions of web pages looking for, once we’re into printers, the specification of a new printer or printer cartridge compatibility? Neither can I, and that’s why we all love searching engines – they are here for us trying to provide most relevant results. However, it’s not only the search engines that are expected to provide effective search. Now let’s fancy another situation: you’re up to buying something online, let it be toner cartridges (remember, we’re still into printers). If you have a favorite pri

HP Inkjet Technology Delivers Drugs
2007-09-17 06:38:59
Here is another example of expanding application of inkjet technology. Last week Hewlett Packard announced that it had used its ink-jet printer cartridge technology to create a patch that releases drugs through the skin in a controlled and painless way. The company said it has entered into a licensing agreement with Crospon, an Irish medical device developer, who will manufacture the invention and make it available to pharmaceutical firms as soon as 2010. A prototype of the skin patch reveals its component parts. Photo courtesy of Hewlett-Packard: Patches that deliver medication through skin has long been around, for instance smoking patches. However they didn’t work for drugs that can’t be absorbed through the skin, and could only provide continuous flow of just one medication. The new patch acts very much like a ink cartridge that squirts different colors. It uses micro-hypodermic needles controlled by a microprocessor to deliver particular drugs below the skin several at sp

IBM Introduces Nanosize Printing Technology
2007-09-12 05:42:45
Researchers from IBM Corporation in collaboration with scientists from ETH Zurich Science and Technology Universityannounced the development of a new printing method that allows placing nanosize particles on a precise location. The technology makes it possible to manipulate particles smaller than 100 nanometers, which delivers resolution equivalent to 100,000 dots per inch. Compare that to maximum resolution of 1,500 dots per inch of current offset printers. IBM cautions the technology has many years to pass before any commercial application is possible. So far, they demonstrated the effectiveness of the developed method by printing an image of the sun. Back then in the 17th century, the sun was alchemist’s symbol for gold, so the researchers used 20,000 gold particles, 60 nanometers in diameter each, to create the image (courtesy of IBM). This printing process is expected to have a dramatic impact on biomedicine, electronics and information technology, according to ScientificAmeric

Remanufactured Cartridges: Truth and Myths
2007-09-06 05:32:45
When searching for cartridges for your printer, you are likely to stop at reliable source offering best price. Deciding on the reliable source may be a matter of taste or experience (personal or second-hand) and that is a subject for a separate discussion. Best price is something more objective. Looking for the best price, you may often come across so-called remanufactured cartridges. They cost the cheapest, so a natural question rises – if they are as reliable as they cost? Let’s have a look at what remanufactured cartridges really are. The very idea of remanufacturing is to make an old thing work just like a new one. Yes, this is mean that a remanufactured cartridge was used before but has bee recovered to perform and provide same level of quality as the brand new cartridge. So, how do they transform an old cartridge into new one? First of all, empty cartridges are collected (through purchase, donation or otherwise) and sent to a remanufacturing plant. At the plant, the cartridge

Scientists Find New Way To Use Inkjet Printer
2007-09-04 05:49:49
As I previously reported, inkjet printers have gone way beyond simple printing your office documents. Japanese “always-searching-for-something-new” scientists found another way of using inkjet technology – for printing blood vessels. Researchers from the Tokyo Medical and Dental University succeeded in printing a blood vessel using a modified inkjet printer specially designed at the Kanagawa Academy of Science and Technology. The printer injects in a spiral pattern a mixture of living cells and special medical gel into a solution of calcium chloride. The solution reacts with the gel, making it solid and keeping the cells in desired shape. The scientists have managed to produce a blood vessel of 1 mm in diameter and 1 cm long. The interior layer of the vessel is made of endothelial cells while the outer layer is comprised of muscle cells, just like an ordinary vessel. So far, the produced blood vessel is just a prototype and does not suit to be transplanted into body, as it’s no

Merits And Flaws Of Printer Cartridges
2007-09-27 00:14:32
The variety of printing supplies available on the market makes us think twice before choosing the right cartridges. You are an owner of a printer that has been serving you well for a while, and one day you discover you are out of inks. At first sight, it seems easy to remove empty cartridges and put in new ones, but the reality bites. Your printer may actually use one or several cartridges (from one in monochrome laser printer to eight in professional color inkjet printer), generally two (black and color) or four separate color cartridges. Since inks or toners in cartridges are not consumed evenly, it is rarely that you have to replace the whole set of cartridges at once. Even if so, buying only four cartridges should not seem such a problem, however this is where the most interesting part begins. Visit your local computer store and you will likely find out there are way too more cartridges for your printer, not just four as you might think. What are all these cartridges and how to

Epson Unveiled New Higher Speed Inkjet Printers
2007-09-24 07:10:16
Seiko Epson Corp. unveiled new multifunctional and color inkjet printers - four consumer models and two business models. All products feature new printheads that enhance inkjet performance and allow for higher printing speeds. The new printheads include two latest improvements. One is increased maximum volume of ink droplet per ejection - from 7 pL to 11 pL. Previously, droplet volume per ejection ranged from 1.5 pL to 7 pL, now it ranges from 1.5 pL to 11 pL. The company said, this became possible due to increased volume of ink chamber in the printhead and enlarged pressure plate transmitting the displacement of piezoelectric element. The other improvement is modification of the drive frequency, which corresponds to the number of ink ejections in a unit of time. The frequency was increased from 45 kHz to 60 kHz thanks to new design of ink flow in the printhead. According to the company, these two improvements increased t the inkjet performance as much as twice. For example, the printi

Never-seen-before Feature of Xerox Printer
2007-09-24 06:32:28
Modern printers are much smarter than the original printing devices they were like, say, 10 years ago. Aside from just printing, they can scan, copy, send faxes, automatically connect to the Web for software updates, and so on. The only thing printer couldn’t do was translation. Not until now. Fuji Xerox Corporation developed a technology that enables laser printers and copiers to translate the text to be printed. The idea behind the technology is simple — the printer scans a sheet of text, and then connects to a dedicated server on the internet where the text is translated and sent back to printer for output. The translating algorithms on the server can distinguish between text, drawings and lines, so page layouts remain. (photo courtesy of Fuji Xerox) So far, only four languages are available for translation: Japanese, Chinese, Korean and English. The laser printer is still a prototype and the technology will take time be refined to be ready for market. No information is yet

HP Admits Wrongful Advertisement
2007-10-02 00:57:52
The continuation and, obviously, the end of the story with HP false advertisement. In the advertisement of LaserJet CP3505, HP claimed the printer “only require replacement toner throughout its life. And nothing else”. This gave Kyocera grounds to bury HP to Advertising Standards Agency, which found that the claims were untrue, because each toner cartridge also included attached drums and consisted of around 60 individual parts. Cartridge for LaserJet CP3505, apart from toner, contains around 70 per cent of the printing mechanism, including drum and cleaners. HP admitted the advertisement was basically wrong and removed the questionable phrases from it. Here are the originators of the fuss:

A Substitute For Printing Ink is Found
2007-10-01 05:31:59
American scientists please us with another achievement in printing technology. They found a new method printing finely-detailed microscopic images with an enzyme instead of ink. The new method known as microcontact printing and reported to have a wide application for rapidly transferring high-resolution images onto large surfaces. However, current nanoscale printing technology depends on the diffusion of ink, and cannot reproduce details finer than one hundred nanometers in diameter. In the new technology, “biocatalytic microcontact printing”, a nano-print is coated with an enzyme - a protein that fastens chemical reactions. (photo courtesy of Science Daily) The enzyme then digests away a layer on the surface, leaving behind an imprint almost like an old-fashioned rubber stamp. Because the process does not require diffusion of ink, the resolution of microcontact printed images is about 100 times greater than conventional technology allows for. The technique creates potential for f

New Epson Stylus Photo R1900 Produces Trillions Of Colors
2007-10-19 05:34:28
For those of us who believes the only possible printing is high-definition printing, Epson introduces a new A3+ (13×19 inches) photo printer. The Photo R1900 implements a “groundbreaking” technology that allows for “smoother images and color control” coupled with UltraChrome™ Hi-Gloss2 Ink. The UltraChrome™ Hi-Gloss2, apart from common cyan, magenta and yellow inks, also features matte black, photo black, red, orange (replacement for blue) and gloss optimiser. All in all, Epson Stylus Photo R1900 is said to produce 18,446,774 trillion colors. Such a tremendous amount of colors offers “a wider color gamut, natural skin tones and consistent color with a smooth gloss finish.” Another innovation in this printer is the Look Up Table (LUT). This table is used to determine how much of each color is required to make a print from a RGB source file. The mathematical algorithm makes sure a printed image matches perfectly the original. The Stylus Photo R1900 supports Epson&r

How Laser Printers First Appeared and Developed
2007-10-24 06:01:23
Today we take the laser printer as an integral part of everyday life in office environment. However 30 years ago when it first appeared, this piece of machinery was quite a curio. When a document is sent to the printer, a laser beam “draws” the document on a drum using electrical charges. After the drum is charged, it is rolled in toner, a dry powder type of ink. The toner sticks to the charged image on the drum. The toner is transferred onto a piece of paper and fused to the paper with heat and pressure. After the document is printed, the electrical charge is removed from the drum and the excess toner is collected. This is how the laser printer works now, but originally it all began from an experiment on image transition. On October 22, 1938, when American inventor Chester Carlson together with German immigrant Otto Kornei first transferred an image from a glass microscope slide to a sheet of wax paper using method later called electrophotography. Kornei wrote the words &

Printing Industry Overview
2007-10-22 06:38:41
One day we are going to sink in the ocean of printer-produced pages, or, rather say, be buried under mountains of such pages. And Britain would to take the impact in the first place. In 1975, Business Week magazine predicted a paperless office. Recent studies show this proves to be an exaggerated prediction. The number of printed pages is somewhere between 2.5 and 2.8 trillion worldwide and is predicted to go up within next 10 years. A study done for Xerox shows that British office workers throw away almost half of what they print during a day. That equals over one trillion (million of millions) pages a year. Most of the wasted printouts are one-time use like drafts or e-mails; some printed pages hardly last 1 minute. Another survey, this time done for Fujitsu-Siemens, reveals that British offices print up to 120 billion pages every year, 22 pages a day per average office worker. It’s said that such amount of paper would make a mountain more than 8,000 miles high. You can do the cal

HP Technology Secures Printing
2007-10-25 20:23:00
Once upon a time, printers were printing devices no different from a typewriter in terms of security. As years lapsed, time printers have become more sophisticated, network-enabled devices with hard drives and even operating systems. Pretty much like personal computer. And people keep on taking printers for what they actually are – devices that produce images and texts. However, modern printers, especially if incorporated into organization’s computer network, can compromise the network security. Printers became as dangerous as computers – they, too, are vulnerable to hackers attacks from inside and outside, and are good place for viruses and other malware to reside. This is what many security expert say and few printer users realize. In an afford to addressed this issue, Hewlett Packard announced Secure Print Advantage – a new printing security system. According to the company, Secure Print Advantage is the industry’s first hardware-based security solution to minimize busines

HP Starts Two-pronged Defence
2007-11-02 09:03:20
The battle for inkjet cartridge mindset and consumers’ money has long been a contentious issue as the OEM printer manufacturers strive to protect their very profitable piece of turf in a market worth $25 billion worldwide. Printer manufacturers successfully play on fear, uncertainty and doubt (the so-called FUD factor) while their competitors play successfully on lower prices and environmental benefits, despite the FUD propaganda. The latest battle in the war of words takes the form of a two-pronged strike by HP. The first arm of its pincer movement was the recent publication of a comparative report claiming better page yields and higher quality results from HP brand cartridges compared to refills. The firm’s second strike against the refiller market was the announcement that its new cartridges now come in two sizes, with one costing much less (and printing fewer pages). The authors of the comparative report claimed that “European research firm Innovationstechnik prov

Epson Cut Ink Cartridges Importers Off The US
2007-10-30 06:34:20
In February, 2006, Epson filed a complaint against 24 US, Korean, German, and Chinese companies that were importing and selling ink cartridges violating Epson’s patents. In March, 2007, The U.S. International Trade Commission issued the Initial Determination that found all 11 patents belonging to Seiko Epson Corporation to be valid and all ink cartridges at issue to violate one or more of the patents. The other day, the ITC issued what they call a Final Determination to support, with slight moderations that don’t change the outcome, the Initial Determination. The ITC also prohibited import of all guilty cartridges into the US, as well as sale and distribution of those cartridges in the U.S. by certain domestic companies. The Final Determination is now to be review by the President within 60 days, to decide if there are any reasons to disapprove the Final Determination. During the review period, importers may continue to import infringing cartridges into the US only if they post a b

Another Study Proves Laser Printers Guilty
2007-10-29 05:34:34
Previously, I reported a study by Australian scientists that proved laser printers may be high-volume ultra-fine particles (UFP) emitters, and that these particles may be hazardous to health (heart problems and lung disease.) Canadian Broadcasting Company sponsored its own study on that issue. The research was conducted in three different locations in Winnipeg by placing particle monitors above printers in the offices. Basically, the results of this new study support those of the Australian study: laser printers do emit ultra-fine particle in large volumes. In the three offices, 20 to 42 per cent of all printers tested were found guilty of polluting the air. 27 per cent of the printers in that study were considered high emitters, or printers that emit more than 10 times the UFP than was found in the ambient air. The amount of UFP concentrations returned to normal levels within one to two minutes after reaching its maximum. Breathe deeply, no reason to panic yet. 27 per cent is not “m
