A serenity prayer
2007-06-20 12:56:27
“Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.“     I say this little prayer every time I feel down, upset or frustrated. Though not a charm to lift my spirits up instantaneously, it does keep me from hitting rock bottom.    There’s a fine line between what we can change and what we can’t; and a finer line between what we can change and what isn’t worth changing. Knowing where to draw these two lines is, what I think, the key to staying sane. Most of the time we put in so much effort (physically and emotionally) in trying to change the things that aren’t just worth it and in the process, tend to neglect ones that actually need amending; and at the end of the day, we regret both - what we have done and what we have NOT done.    I think life would be much simpler if only there was a guidebook (technically, an instruction manual), complete with an

If you are wondering why I’m writing a review on this movie almost two months after it was released, well, this isn’t really a review on the movie. Being a person who watches movies at the rate of one per month, I know my blog doesn’t qualify for movie reviews     This post is just my thoughts on the concept that the movie is based on. Anytime I have a serious discussion on the movie with any guy, it almost often starts a He-She argument between us. The reason for the argument: the claim from the guy that all women are fighter-cocks (or should I say fighter-hens?) like the character Jhansi in the movie and this overly generalized claim gets on my nerves.     The movie starts off - the exact sequence of events, I don’t remember - with the female lead character, Jhansi, getting mad at her boyfriend for living his life the way he wants - flirting with other women. The guy, Kathick is westernized (I say western here cos someone recently told me that in

I need help!

I really do! I happened to read a mail from my ’sent items’ today, one I had sent to a friend some days back and I was mighty shocked at what I saw. The four-line mail had about a dozen smilies grinning, laughing, staring, winking and even yelling at me. That’s when the truth hit me: I’ve become a smiley-addict!     When I first set my eyes on ’smilies’ in one of my text books - under topic ‘Emoticons’ - they didn’t impress me so much. It didn’t make sense to me why anyone would want to use those little ascii-faces to convey emotions? weren’t words enough, I wondered (my! how naive I was then!)     Even when yahoo messenger introduced me to it’s graphical smilies, I wasn’t all that impressed. I started using them because they were there, tossing them around carelessly…and then slowly, they started appearing at every punctuation of my sentences. The animated ones only made it worse&hellip

Automatic Restart After Update
2007-04-30 05:48:54
This is probably the silliest dialog I’ve ever come across. Like popping it out of the blue when I’m in the middle of something isn’t irritating enough, it gives me two stupid options to choose from, ‘restart now’ or ‘restart later’, when the one I want is ‘leave me alone’. If you’re looking at the dialog for the first time, you’d probably assume ‘restart later’ is going to let you off the hook but no, it would haunt you, every 10 minutes, until you submit to the Gods of Windows and reboot.     Now what happens if you just drag the annoying window (which, mind you, doesn’t have a close button) to a corner of the screen and continue with your work? It just restarts your system, pretending you do not even exist. The same would happen if you aren’t near your computer when the dialog comes up. It just reboots, giving no damn consideration to whatever you were doing, leaving you w

‘Crazy cricket’? Whatever!
2007-04-26 00:48:52
So there goes South Africa’s dream of getting the World Cup and my hopes along with it. There’s one thing I’ve realized now, you can’t go around blaming luck for every damn failure in a match…bad cricket does have a role to play at times. Here’s a postmortem of yesterday’s SA vs AU semi-finals. They call it a “case of stage fright”… come to think of it, that does explain a lot, doesn’t it? winning all the not-so-important matches and screwing up the big ones.     This world cup was a big time disappointment for me. First, India loses miserably to Bangladesh and gets chucked out (though I don’t give much thought to the Indian team, it’s my country, after all!). South Africa (my favorite cricket team), in spite of entering the tournament at the No. 1 position, succumbs pathetically to the now strongest team. &lsquo ;Damn!’ is what has been echoing in my mind since the match last night.     S

“Lady Luck, What Hath Thou Against SA?”
2007-03-25 01:19:46
When it comes to World Cup-Cricket, I think South Africa has always been quite unlucky (and trust me, I’m not the only one to think so). In spite of being a strong team all along, they’ve never been able to get their hands on the coveted cup. The match against Australia yesterday only reaffirms my thoughts about their ill luck.     Ever since I read the World Cup schedule, I had been waiting for the Australia vs. South Africa match and I, quite naturally, wanted SA to win. But after Australia’s batting, I wasn’t much hopeful, considering the tough target of 378. However,SA started off their batting so amazingly well that I chided myself for underestimating my long-time (if not, all-time) favorite cricket team. AB de Villiers and Graeme Smith were doing a real good job.     The match was clearly moving the way I wanted. However, just when I had stopped touching wood and started relaxing, de Villiers was run out. The fact that he scored one run more than

Free SMS
2007-02-27 04:31:29
www.way2sms.com     I got to know about this site today, through a forward sent by a friend (who normally sends me every forward 5-6 times to ensure that I, if not read them, atleast spend some quality time in deleting them). When I clicked the link, I expected a popup-rich web-page laden heavily with ads to come up, but to my surprise, it was a real neat page with just a few lines explaining what the site is about and the login widgets.     To send a free sms, all you have to do is sign up with your name, your email address and your mobile number. Your password is then sent to your mobile, using which you can sign in and start messaging the person sitting next to you (then, go to him and check if he got your sms. If he didn’t, try again!). Pretty cool isn’t?     And did I sign up? yeah, I very much did. Any link that even vaguely resembles the words ‘Sign Up’ gets me into action (those weirdos into phishing thrive only ‘coz of people like me!).

Programming Quotes
2007-02-27 01:13:20
I couldn’t resist putting up these quotes here. Though amusing, they make a great deal of sense, given the way software is being developed. Anyone who’s been in the software field for more than a day (no, make it an hour) would agree with me —————————— UNIX is simple. But It just needs a genius to understand its simplicity. –Dennis Ritchie Theory is when you know something, but it doesn’t work. Practice is when something works, but you don’t know why it works. Programmers combine theory and practice: Nothing works and they don’t know why. If builders built buildings the way programmers wrote programs, then the first woodpecker that came along would destroy civilisation. -Gerald Weinberg One of the main causes of the fall of the Roman Empire was that, lacking zero, they had no way to indicate successful termination of their C programs. –Robe

Saturday blues
2007-02-17 06:24:42
There’s a lot of things I would like to do on a Saturday but working isn’t one of them The holiday last Monday (for which we’re compensating by working today) was ok but it was a city-wide shutdown (colorfully called bandh) and I wasn’t able to step out of my house, didn’t get to have any fun, didn’t even get to eat good food…then why am I being made to work today? A beautiful Saturday gone entirely wasted…just not fair!

The Third Twin
2007-02-15 08:06:18
The Third Twin - Ken Follett     This was the first Ken Follet book I read. Until I read this one, I hadn’t given much thought to Ken Follett ‘cos I wasn’t much into espionage thrillers, the kind I’ve heard this guy usually writes. The reason I picked up this book was 1. It’s a bio-tech thriller - I’ve always fancied books of this genre (since when, I don’t remember!) 2. The story’s lead role is named Steve - I’ve always had a liking for this name and I seem to fall in love with every book/movie character having this name. Before you start wondering, no, I don’t know any real person named Steve personally     Anyways, getting back on subject, before starting to read, I wasn’t expecting much from the book, considering it was from an author about whom not many people talked about. Neither was the storyline anything too different from the Robin Cook books I’ve read. But as I read on, I realized there was somethin

Paying bills online? No thanks!
2007-07-26 09:41:54
The airtel.in site - that looks impeccably professional at first sight - can seriously get on your nerves sometimes. Ok, I understand for a person with a flash memory (meaning, I forget everything in a flash), changing passwords every month is not a security option but a dumb idea. But just because I changed my airtel.in password sometime back and forgot the new password doesn’t mean Airtel can subject me to a mental torment, right? I need to pay my mobile bill, which is already a week overdue and the site is doing everything possible to stop me from paying it. Now, don’t ask me why I didn’t walk into an Airtel office to pay it. That’s a physical torment!     So, for the record, here’s what happened. I went to the airtel.in site and entered my username (which, thankfully being my mobile number, is easy to remember) and password. It opened a pop-up asking me to enter my username/password again…yes, again! Now, this is not because I entere

And this too shall come to pass…
2007-04-12 02:29:15
If I can endure for this minute Whatever is happening to me, No matter how heavy my heart is Or how dark the moment may be If I can remain calm and quiet With all the world crashing about me, Secure in the knowledge God loves me When everyone else seems to doubt me If I can but keep on believing What I know in my heart to be true, That darkness will fade with the morning And that this will pass away, too Then nothing in life can defeat me For as long as this knowledge remains I can suffer whatever is happening For I know God will break all of the chains That are binding me tight in the darkness And trying to fill me with fear For there is no night without dawning And I know that my morning is near. ~ By Helen Steiner Rice ~

1two3ty1-it’s all about numbers and pixels
2007-09-29 03:07:29
1two3ty1 - no, that’s not a result of a cat running over my keyboard. If am not spoiling the surprise, 1two3ty1 means one to thirty one. It’s about photographing numbers around your house and posting them online. If you belong to one of the following categories, 1two3ty1 could turn out an entertaining challenge for you…an occupying one at that! 1. If you, like most techies, own a digital camera* but haven’t been using it for a long time because you, like most techies, don’t have a life…and want to, someday, dust your digicam and start using it. 2. If you own a digital camera and you have a life (lucky you!) but haven’t gotten a chance to go beyond the auto setting of the camera…and are looking for a chance to play around with the rest of the settings and feel like a pro (you didn’t pay so much to use it like an analog one, did you?). 3. If you own a digital camera; you also own a very large house and you haven’t gotten a ch

Differences aren’t so bad, you know!

“I do not, for the moment atleast, ask you to understand me. That will come only when you are willing to give up changing me into a copy of you.” ~David Keirsey     It’s sometimes so frustrating when people expect me to react the way they would or like what they like all the time. I know what you are thinking but no, I’m not this headstrong person always wanting to have my way. I can be docile to some extent, in fact, to a great extent but if you want to see yourself in me, well, for God’s sake get yourself a mirror and leave me alone!     I think relationships would be a lot easier if only we could understand that people are different from each other in their thoughts, perspective, likes, dislikes…whatever. Just ‘cos someone doesn’t see things the way you do doesn’t mean the person doesn’t belong to your league. It’s ok to try and change someone for their own good, cos in this case it only shows you care for the

The Little Things

Sometimes just a little push is all it takes to help someone reach for the stars and sometimes, just a little word to lift the spirits high. Sometimes just a little memory is all it takes to revive the times that made you smile and sometimes, just a little lie to believe it’s gonna be okay. But sometimes just [...]

Movie Success Stories

I’m not an movie expert, not even close but I think there are two ways you can make a (Tamil) movie successful. Option 1: Give a good movie. Now, this is not quite as simple as it sounds. You’ll need a good story - one that would appeal to the ‘youth’ and can also qualify as [...]
