Upcoming Weekend Project 2007-06-19 15:07:23 We just got our backyard fixed up and all ready for entertaining. My husband built a new picnic table and the garden is coming along nicely (which is great because I loathe gardening). Now it’s time to add some finishing touches!
The first thing I thought of were sand candles. Sand candles are made by pouring hot wax into a mold of wet sand, and then letting it harden before digging it out. The sand and the wax combine around the outside of the candle, making a thick wall that contains the wax. They’re really pretty, and perfect for outdoor entertaining.
I found a good set of step-by-step instructions for making sand candles here at Home Envy. Instead of pulling the candle out of the sand by the wick, though, it’s best to use a spoon or small shovel and dig the candle out. Then you’ll want to brush off any loose clumps of sand before putting the candles out. You can flatten the bottom by melting the wax at the base of the candle with a lighter.

Wax & Bubbles Needs a Tag Line Contest! 2007-06-18 04:50:56 In your travels around the 451Press blogs, you may have noticed some spiffy new banners on some of the sites. Well, Wax & Bubbles
doesn’t want to be left out of the new graphics action! While the banner is under construction, I need some help in coming up with a suitable tag line for the blog.
That’s where the contest comes in! Leave your suggestions for a great tag line in the comments of this post. I’ll pick my favourite next Monday, June 25th, and the winning author will receive a bottle of Shower Shock caffeinated shower gel. Please keep the tag lines clean (no pun intended) and related to the subject matter of the blog - making candles and soap.
The contest is open to anyone, anywhere, unless prohibited in your state or province of residence. The prize will be mailed directly from yours truly, so the winner will be contacted by e-mail so I can get his or her mailing address. That means that you must provide a valid e-mail address in the appropriate box when l Read more:Needs

Melt and Pour Soap Recipe - Spa Soap 2007-06-15 12:56:30 I love, love, love this soap. I make it all the time, and it gets used up, given away, or sold within a few days of the batch coming out of the molds. It looks gorgeous and works like a charm. This is Spa Soap (well, that’s what I’ve called it anyway - you’re free to come up with a more creative name of course), and it’s one of the best-selling soaps I’ve ever made.
To make Spa Soap, you have to first whip up a batch of bath salts. Go ahead, I’ll wait. All done? Great! Let’s move on.
I don’t have exact amounts to give you for this recipe, ’cause I usually just play around with the soap base I have on hand. If you need specific amounts though, let me know and I’ll measure next time I make them. Don’t be intimidated by the extra step here - it sounds a lot more complicated than it is.
Here’s what you’ll need:
transparent melt and pour soap base
deep, individual soap molds - I use mini loaf pans, the ones that
Bath Salt Scrub Bar 2007-06-13 10:23:17 Bath salts are terrific, but they’re not all that conducive to showers. I mean you could throw some salts in your shower, but your feet are the only body parts that will benefit from that! If you want to take your bath salts and transform them into something shower-friendly, try making a Salt Scrub bar of soap.
There are two different ways to go about this that have worked for me, and both use melt and pour. I’ve tried adding salts to cold process soap but they’ve never stood up to the heat of the soap itself. I suppose you could add a layer of m&p soap on top of your CP batch and sprinkle the salts over the soap while it’s still hot - that might be one of my next experiments! Anyway, moving on.
For a simple Salt Scrub bar, you’ll need:
handful of prepared bath salts for each bar
clear or opaque melt and pour soap base
soap molds
soap dyes (optional)
essential or fragrance oils
(more…)
Homemade Bath Salts 2007-06-12 10:41:59 Another great addition to a bath — bath salts! These salts are soothing and relaxing, as well as skin-softening. All you have to do is throw a handful into your bath water, and they dissolve away leaving a terrific smell and softened water. The best part is that they’re really, really easy to make.
All you need are the salts themselves, some liquid glycerin (which is optional), and your scents and dyes of you want to use them. You can also add baking soda, which gives a bit of a fizz to the bath and helps to absorb excess moisture in the salts. Liquid glycerin is moisturizing, and can be purchased at health food stores, drug stores, or online.
Mix up the salts for a variety of textures and properties. Dead sea salts are terrific for the skin, for example.
Here’s a very basic recipe, which can be tweaked quite easily depending on your desired results and what you have on hand to make the salts with.
1 cup coarse kosher salt
1 cup Epsom salts
1 cup baking soda
2-3 tabl
Soap on a Rope 2007-06-11 15:55:45 Soap on a rope is a classic gift - how many of us can remember giving our Dads a gift box of Old Spice soap on a rope when we were kids? I don’t know if the Dads ever used them, but they were pretty neat back in the day!
You can make your own soap on a rope, and it’s a really simple procedure. If you’ve got some fancy 3-D two-part molds lying around, these are perfect for soap on a rope. Soap Goods has a great tutorial, complete with pictures, to walk you through the process - just scroll down to find them. This can be done with either cold process or melt and pour soap making methods.
Don’t have fancy molds? No problem! I’ve used regular tray molds, empty yogurt containers, milk cartons, and even muffin tins to create different shapes and sizes of soap on a rope. Just prepare your soap base as usual, and pour so that your molds are half full. Prepare the “rope” by folding it over to create a loop and tying it off, then place the knotted end on
Inspiration! Some Pretty Gel Candles 2007-06-08 11:34:22 Since it’s Friday, I thought I’d share some interesting gel candles that are available online. Use them as inspiration for your own candle projects this weekend, or simply have a look and be impressed with the creativity of these candle makers. Enjoy!
First we have one of the most popular types of gel candles - the seascape. Gel wax does look like water in a container, so adding shells and fish just comes naturally. Blue Chopsticks has a pretty one that features a starfish, while Joissu has made theirs look more like an aquarium.
100 Candles
has taken clear glass shot glasses and suspended gold and silver flakes in their gel candles. These are so simple, but the result is quite elegant. eCrater takes the basic champagne candle one step further with strawberry champagne candles, served up in champagne flutes.

Making Your Own Soap Equipment 2007-06-06 10:47:21 Take a look around the ‘net and you’ll see that there is a huge variety of soap making equipment on the market. Molds, soap cutters, pH testers, stirrers, pitchers … you name it, it’s probably being sold online. It can be overwhelming for all of us, as well as painful for the pocketbook.
Fortunately the online soaping community also serves to help us save some of our hard-earned cash by providing ideas and patterns to make our own soaping supplies, or give new life to old household items. For example, if you’ve got an old coffee pot laying around, it’s the perfect vessel for melting soap base in over a pot of boiling water, and it even comes complete with a handle and pouring spout.
Soap Crafters has a wonderfully detailed piece on making your own professional soap cutter. It’s a bit involved, but if you’ve ever hand-cut a large batch of soap with the intention of selling your perfectly uniform bars, you’ll understand the value of Read more:Equipment
How to Make Bath Tea 2007-06-04 10:45:30 Bath tea, which is also called tub tea, is just what it sounds like. A mixture of herbs, salts, dried flowers, powdered milk, and/or essential oils is packed into a large tea bag and steeped in the bath to release all of the healing properties of the ingredients. Use whatever combination of ingredients and scents you’d like to create unique fragrances and benefits.
To make bath teas, you’ll need either heat sealable tea bags, or small muslin bags that allow the water to circulate and release the goodies inside. Try Brambleberry or Mystic Mountain Sage for the tea bags - both sites have reasonable prices and high quality products. Just fill the bags and then use heat from an iron or hair dryer to seal them.
Muslin bags should have a drawstring to keep them closed in the bath. If you choose to go this route, you can package the “tea” in a jar, and include a small scoop along with the muslin bag. The bag itself is reuseable, and the entire package makes a pretty pr
Kid’s Candle Craft - Crayon Candles 2007-06-01 13:01:52 As with any type of candle making project, this one requires adult supervision. Keep little hands away from melted wax, because it’s very hot!
There are a couple of different ways to make crayon candles, so I’ll share the basic method first, and then give you some variations.
Here’s what you’ll need:
Lots of broken crayons
Candle
mold, glass jar, or an old milk carton cut down to a few inches tall
Candle wicks
Optional: crushed ice, white paraffin wax, candle glitter, candle paints
Sort the crayons into colour groups, with like colours together. This is optional, but if you melt them all together you’ll end up with an odd sort of colour for your finished candle.
Melt the crayons, one colour group at a time, in a double boiler over low heat, stirring gently but frequently. Meanwhile, prepare the mold or container by placing the wick in the centre. If you have tabbed wicks, you can put a little bit of the melted crayon wax on the bottom of the tab to hold Read more:Candles

Crisco Soap Recipe 2007-06-20 13:49:42 Soap is made by combining fats, water, and lye and waiting for the mixture to saponify and trace - it then hardens and makes a nifty little batch of soap. Sometimes though, it’s hard to find a lot of the fancy oils you want to use to make a nice, hard, rich bar. Enter Crisco.
I know what you’re thinking. “Why on earth would I want to wash myself with Crisco shortening?” I’ll tell you why: because Crisco is made up of soybean, cottonseed, canola, and palm oils. They’ve already done the mixing for you!
This could possibly be the easiest cold process soap recipe you’ll ever find. It’s perfect for beginners, or for anyone who wants to make a really hard, really white batch of soap. Of course you can add stuff to it - dyes, ground loofah or other ground seeds, herbs, dried flowers, etc. But if it’s basic you’re looking for, this is your recipe.
Here’s what you’ll need:
3 pounds Crisco shortening (not the butter flavou

Alternatives to Citronella 2007-07-03 13:47:29 Keeping bugs at bay with citronella candles is simple and effective, but some of us aren’t all that fond of the smell. I don’t mind the smell much at all until the candle is lit - then it just puts me right off. We still use them, but I’ve started to search for some scent alternatives to add to my outdoor candles that will keep the bugs away and not cause me to wrinkle my nose.
So far, there are a few scents that are promising. Alone or in combinations, try these essential oils in your outdoor candles:
rosemary
lemongrass
clary sage
eucalyptus
thyme
clove
peppermint
Most fruity or flowery scents will actually attract bugs, with the possible exception of lavender. Lavender essential oil can be combined with one of the above fragrances and still be effective. Citronella oil can also be combined with other scents, but generally the citronella will overpower whatever you add to it.
Here’s to a mosquito-free summer! Read more:Alternatives
Make Your Own Citronella Candles 2007-07-02 12:44:31 Citronella candles are a popular, natural way to keep mosquitoes at bay. The slight lemon scent isn’t all that bothersome to us humans, but bugs seem to really hate it! Lighting a few citronella candles at an outdoor dinner party, barbeque, or picnic is a great way to add ambiance and keep the pests away at the same time.
These candles come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, and colours. You can get them in pots, tins, on sticks, or as votives or tea lights. If you want to make your citronella candles really personal and unique, it’s easy to make them yourself.
All you need to do is pick up some citronella oil, and add it as your scent to your regular wax candle recipes. Make sure you get the small bottles of pure citronella oil, rather than citronella burning oil, which will NOT work in candles.
About.com has a great set of instructions for making citronella torches. I prefer to make them in old tin buckets or terra cotta flower pots. However you make them, make sure tha Read more:Candles

Cold Process Soap and Types of Oils 2007-08-08 01:00:12 During the process of making soap you can either make a basic recipe of you can dabble a little into the more luxury butters to add to your recipes. Understanding the different types of butters and the effects they will have on your soap recipes can greatly help you understand what you need to do when re-batching a bad batch of cold process soap also.
For a harder, longer lasting more stable bar of soap you would want to use oils like palm oil, beef tallow and/or lard. You can mix and match the amounts of oils you use or use only one type in you recipes.
For a bar that is full of soft creamy lather the best way to go is coconut oil. Your next runners up would be castor oil and palm kernel oil. Coconut being one of the cheapest of the three oils is what the majority of soap maker’s use while making cold process soap.
Now if you’re looking for a great moisturizing or conditioning soap you have even more choices between olive oil, canola oil, sunflower oil and soybean oil. These oils Read more:Process
Cutting Down On Soot 2007-08-07 01:00:26 As a new candle maker one of the biggest problems is finding the perfect blend of wax, fragrance oil, candle dye and wicks to create the perfect soot free candle. Truth be told though anything that has a flame or burns is going to produce soot even cooking on a gas stove. As a candle maker we try to prevent this soot as much as possible.
When you’re aiming for a soot free candle the biggest thing you need to remember is that each wick is specially designed for a certain type of candle. If you are using a zinc candle wick that is made for a 4 inch wide jar, but you are using it in a two inch wide jar you are going to have soot. On top of that you run the risk of an exploding container since the wick will burn much to hot for the type of jar you are using it in.
You will also want to make sure your customers know of to take care of their candles. Trimming wicks to the proper size which is ¼ inch from the top of a candle greatly reduces soot. If a candle wick is left burning to long it Read more:Cutting

Making A Cucumber-Melon Facial Mask 2007-11-16 16:41:53
With the combination of cucumber, lavender essential oil and yogurt to cool the skin, this combination of ingredients helps soothe blemished skin and help ease the pain of blemishes. Cosmetic clay helps to draw out the impurities that lay under the skin, and the essential oil of juniper helps to rid the skin of bacteria. The main cause of blemishes on the skin is bacteria and what is the main reason for bacteria? Dirty skin. The most dirt on the skin surface the more bacteria. The more bacteria the more breakouts happen. The more breakouts the more there is of skin inflammation. The first step to help correct this issue is to cleanse the face throughly. always rinse with lukewarm water. This ensures you don’t inflame what is already flared. Pat your face dry and apply a soothing cucumber-melon mask to soothe the inflammation additionally. Here’s how to make this wonderful facial mask for problem skin.

Minty-Citrus Toothpaste 2007-11-14 14:07:40
It’s quite easy to make your own toothpastes. If you just have the main ingredients to anything you can make it yourself right in your very own kitchen. Think about it. The main ingredients in peanut butter is what? Peanuts and oil and possibly a dab of sugar. Well, there you go. Smash the peanuts, add oil as needed to make it creamy, then add sugar to taste. Or go sugar-free. That’s it.
That’s about the same concept to toothpastes, shampoos, and evey hairsprays. All you need is the basic ingredients and you’re set.
To make the Minty-CitrusToothpaste
you need these basic ingredients:
1/2 cup bicarbonate of soda (baking soda)

20 drops peppermint essential oil
20 drops lemon essential oil
20 drops orange essential oil
10 drops eucalyptus essential oil
Mix all the ingredients together throughly in a small bowl. Be sure to use a woode
