Nepal’s young goddesses at modern crossroads 2007-06-17 11:52:50 WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The goddess likes to play with a toy cell phone when she’s blessing supplicants.
Or blow up balloons. It’s tough to sit still on a throne answering people’s prayers all day when you’re only 10 years old.
Sajani Shakya is one of several Nepal
i children designated living goddesses — kumaris — in the Kathmandu valley, where her people observe Buddhism with elements of Hinduism thrown in. She was identified by priests at age 2 as an incarnation of the Hindu goddess Kali and will be worshiped until she reaches puberty.
Sajani and her fellow kumaris are the subjects of a documentary film that juxtaposes ancient tradition with contemporary political upheaval in Nepal, where a bloody civil war and a civilian uprising have challenged the country’s king and monarchy.
For much of the day Sajani sits on a painted wooden throne in her family’s house in the town of Bhaktapur, wearing heavy black and red make-up and a red brocade Read more:young
Google may launch YouTube for Europe 2007-06-16 17:08:25 Google Inc. is gathering some of its top executives in Paris next week for an international press conference and speculation is rife that announcements will include a local version of YouTube
for Europe
an countries.
France 24, a French public TV channel, confirmed Friday that it has been in talks with Google, suggesting the search giant may be lining up local content for its video-sharing service. Google’s YouTube events calendar pegs Tuesday — the day of the press conference — for an unspecified “Paris launch.”
A Google spokeswoman in France declined to comment on the France 24 talks or speculation about local versions of YouTube.
YouTube is already popular in Europe despite having only an English language interface. Offering local language versions, along with more local TV content, could help it compete more effectively with homegrown alternatives, said Bob Ivins, managing director of comScore Europe.

Russian experts try to fix space station computers 2007-06-16 02:02:07 MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian
engineers sought to fix malfunctioning navigational computers
on the orbiting International Space Station on Friday, hoping to ward off a possible evacuation of its three crew.
The computers, some of which control thrusters that help keep the $100 billion (50.8 billion pound) station in a stable orbit, broke down on Wednesday shortly after the crew of the visiting U.S. space Shuttle Atlantis installed a new solar wing panel for power.
Russian space officials were “cautiously optimistic” the problems in the German-built computers that run Russian software could be solved, a Roskosmos official was quoted as saying.
The six computers were restarted on Thursday and worked for three hours before breaking down again, Russian media reported.
“During the day a whole series of measures will be undertaken to analyse the reasons for the malfunction of the computers and to get them back in working order,” Russian space agency spokesman Igor Panari

Texas authorities arrest 7 former MySpace members 2007-06-15 17:20:25 NEW YORK (Reuters) - Texas
police arrested seven convicted sex offenders after MySpace
handed over identity details about the former members of the Internet social network, the Texas attorney general’s office said on Thursday.
The seven, whose profiles on MySpace had already been removed under an internal program to weed out sex offenders prowling the News Corp.-owned site, were arrested for breaking parole or probation rules.
The arrests, which occurred over a two-week period, come after authorities
in several states asked MySpace to hand over information on convicted sex offenders.
The seven offenders had been convicted of sexually assaulting girls as young as 4 years old. Most victims were between 13 and 21 years old.

Authorities announced this week three arrests in separate schemes to infect computers to allow them to be remotely controlled by malicious software, usually sent by spam e-mail.
FBI special agent Richard Kolko said “the vast majority” of the million computers were in the United States but added that “it’s a global problem” and the US authorities have worked with partners from as many as 60 countries in the investigations.
“The majority of victims are not even aware that their computer has been compromised or their personal information exploited,” said FBI assistant director for the cyber division James Finch in a statement.

EBay pulls ads from Google after corporate spat 2007-06-15 17:12:06 SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) - EBay and Google
have turned from ardent partners to nettled adversaries, with the renowned online auction site yanking it ads from the world’s most popular Internet search engine.
EBay on Friday sidestepped rumors that stripping its advertising from Google is payback for Google planning to promote a competing online payment service across the street from an annual gathering of eBay users in Boston this week.
The auction website’s fans from far and wide are at a massive conference center for “three days of celebrating all things eBay” at an event dubbed “Live,” according to the company.
EBay executives got word before the event that Mountain View, California-based Google intended to lure eBay aficionados to a party across a street from the convention center in the eastern US city.
The party was to promote Google Checkout, an online financial transactions service that competes with PayPal, which is owned by San Jose, California-ba Read more:corporate
Google Complains About Microsoft’s Vista 2007-06-15 17:03:36 SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Internet search leader Google
Inc. is trying to convince federal and state authorities that Microsoft
Corp.’s Vista
operating system is stifling competition as the high-tech heavyweights wrestle for the allegiance of personal computer users.
In a 49-page document filed April 18 with the U.S. Justice Department and state attorneys general, Google alleged that the latest version of Microsoft’s Windows operating system impairs the performance of “desktop search” programs that find data stored on a computer’s hard drive.
The Vista operating system, which became widely available in January, includes a desktop search function that competes with a free program Google introduced in 2004. Several other companies also offer desktop search applications.

Does power consumption double PS3 cost? 2007-06-19 04:16:31
Does power
consumption double
PS3 cost?
£800 for the console and the power it will drain away
There cannot be any doubt about it, the PlayStation 3 is an astonishing device. It wields the same amount of power as a mighty gaming PC while measuring just a fraction of the size. It handles Blu-ray movies with ease and the graphics it can produce are nothing short of stunning.
Its main criticism has been its price, though. When it launched in the UK it cost £425 and you still can’t get one for much less than 400 quid. And unfortunately for gamers, this is not the end of the story with the PS3.
Ignoring the hundreds of pounds that every owner is willing to spend on games over a long enough time period, there’s another stealthy money-draining factor at play here: power consumption.
Wii wins againAdvertisement
Power consumption research site Sust-It says the PS3 costs £47.69 a year to run. The site assumes that the PS3 will be used for two hours a day and will squeeze every wat

Apple says iPhone battery life longer than expected 2007-06-18 16:18:21 Apple’s iPhone
will have a longer lasting battery
than originally expected, exceeding those in rival phones, the company said on Monday.
Shares in Apple rose more than 3 percent as analysts said the company put to rest one of several concerns over the iPhone, which combines a music player and cell phone. It’s due to hit stores June 29.
Apple said it expects the iPhone to provide up to eight hours of mobile phone talk time, or six hours of Internet use. In January, the company said it expected the battery could last for as long as five hours of talk time.
Apple also said the top surface of the touch-screen phone, which will sell for about $500 (250 pounds) to $600 through a subscription with AT&T, has been upgraded from plastic to optical-quality glass, making it more resistant to scratches.
AT&T, the biggest U.S. wireless provider, has an exclusive agreement to sell the phone in the United States for at least two years. The company has said that more than a million Read more:Apple
Symantec Packages Risk Service 2007-06-18 16:13:52 Symantec Corp has launched a risk assessment service that it claims is the first to consider the four major categories of IT risk holistically.
The need to consider threats to security, compliance, availability and performance together rather than separately was a major message from Symantec at its user conference in Las Vegas, Nevada this week (see separate Q+A with Symantecs services chief Greg Hughes.)
If the service is new, does that mean that Symantec has only just started to follow its own advice? The answer is not entirely clear.
Symantecs consulting practice director Darren Thomson acknowledged that before the company began the pilot of the Foundation IT Risk Assessment service, it had been offering risk assessments to customers in each of those discrete areas [of availability, performance, security and compliance.]
