Finding a Miniature Schnauzer Puppy

You’ve decided that a Miniature Schnauzer is the right dog for you, it’s time to find a puppy! However, finding the a Miniature Schnauzer puppy isn’t as straight forward as you might hope, but thanks to the internet it has become a lot easier. So, here’s some things that I noticed that made picking a puppy hard and how I got over them. Why is it so hard to find a Miniature Schnauzer puppy? After finding it pretty hard to get the right Miniature Schnauzer puppy, I realised it was hard for the following reasons: Puppies are only available when a litter has been born. This seems fairly obvious, but a female Miniature Schnauzer only comes into season (on heat) once every 6 to 7 months and have a pregnancy that lasts 60 to 67 days. Bernard at 4 Weeks: Still With a Tail

Here’s a picture of Bernard at 4 weeks old. His eye’s have opened and he’s keen to explore the World. He’s yet to be weaned but his teeth are starting to come through (hence the rubber bone). What makes this picture of Bernard unusual is that he still has his tail as it was common practice to dock (cut off) a Miniature Schnauzer puppy’s tail shortly after birth. Since April 2007, however it has been illegal to dock the tails on dogs in the UK. So this is the first litter that Bernard’s breeders have had with long tails and I think they have found it a little odd. Miniature Schnauzer’s with tails are particularly adorable though and they soon fell in love with their undocked tails. The tail on the Miniature Schnauzer tends to curl over at the base and point up the dog’s back. Just like every dog though, when they’re excited they wag them frantically:

The Miniature Schnauzer dog is probably one of the best family pets you could find. They are loving and friendly dogs who crave attention and company. Although small, Miniature Schnauzers are not a toy dog. Their sturdy build and smart looks make Miniature Schnauzers particularly handsome pets.As with virtually every breed of dog, the exact roots of the Miniature Schnauzer are not known. However, it is generally thought that the Miniature Schnauzer has been bred since the late 19th Century when standard Schnauzers where crossed with Affenpinschers or possibly Poodles. The Miniature Schnauzer didn’t come to the UK until the late 1920’s when Schnauzers were imported from Holland.

Welcome to… Miniature Schnauzer Stories

Hello and welcome to this, the first post on a brand new blog about Miniature Schnauzer dogs: Miniature Schnauzer Stories . The complete title of this blog is, in fact, “The Adventures of Professor Bernard Armstrong and Other Miniature Schnauzer Stories” but that was just too long for the title, so Miniature Schnauzer Stories is an abbreviated name. The Professor Bernard Armstrong after whom this blog is titled is my Miniature Schnauzer dog (he’s Bernard to his friends). Just 8 weeks old, Bernard was born on the 18th April and, as I write, is still lodging with his breeder. But, dear Reader in just one short week he will be coming home to live with me and my wife. This blog is to be a record of Bernard’s life with us (that means plenty of pictures) and also a source of information about looking after a Miniature Schnauzer puppy and dog. It will also be a companion to Miniature-Schnauzers.co.uk, where you can find more information about Miniature Schnauzer dogs. S

Canine Cancer

I appreciate that this is a bit of a leap from bringing a puppy home to canine cancer, however its been on my mind recently as our neighbour’s 2 Irish Wolf Hounds have both been diagnosed with cancer and sadly both had to be put down. The two dogs were mother and daughter and both were diagnosed with a week of each other. The mother had a stomach tumour and the daughter had bone cancer. Whether earlier detection of the cancers would meant that they might not have been put down is impossible to say, but there are signs that you can look for to make it easier to diagnose canine cancer. Bringing a Puppy Home

Friday is the big day when we will finally bring Bernard home. It’s going to be a nerve racking time, not just for us but for Bernard as well. It will be the first time that he will be leaving the security of the breeders home, which has been his home too for the past 8 weeks. It will be only the second time that he’s been in a car (the first was when he went to have his eye’s tested at the vets). And worst of all, he’ll be leaving with two complete strangers. Obviously then we want to make the trip home as stress free as we can for Bernard and also as safe as possible. Here’s how we’re going to do it: We’ve got a crate for Bernard. That doesn’t mean we’ve bought Bernard a few beers to calm his nerves, but we’ve got a dog crate. This should keep him safe and comfortable as we go home. We’ve got some veterinary bedding.
