Am I too argumentative?
2007-07-25 06:43:22
Update: a reply! Supposedly, my comments were blocked by a rule which removes posts with more than two links. Given both my comments1 only had one link, this seems unlikely. Just to being with, I’ll just say that in general, I don’t agree with Atheistic evangelism. I get really pissed off when Christians (I only single them out because no one else has ever tried to convert me, but I’m sure they’re not the only evangelists) don’t understand that I have no interest in joining their religion (or any other, for that matter). It is for exactly that reason that I disagree with atheists doing exactly the same thing. I don’t care if we’re right - I’ll happily debate with someone, and explain my position, but I’m not arrogant enough to think that everyone else should necessarily share my views. Before you say “why are you giving these religious people so much respect?” (as I’m sure many Dawkinians might), I would treat peop

Scott Adams on Atheism
2007-07-29 23:41:22
I think Scott Adams (Creator of Dilbert) needs a bit of an atheist education. In his post “The Atheist Who Thought He Was God“, he makes two common misunderstandings/fallacies relating to Atheism . Can you spot them? Perhaps there are more, but I think they boil down to the following: Few, if any, atheists claim to be 100% sure that God does not exist. (99.99999% IS good enough) Pascal’s Wager (which Adams’ post is based on - although perhaps not knowingly) doesn’t account for the multitude of beings which claim punishment for non-belief. Of course the other fallacies of Pascal’s wager are equally present in Adams’ post. atheism, belief, certainty, dilbert, god, pascalShare This

“Atheist” as a label
2007-07-29 20:15:57
I started thinking after reading this comment - why do atheists feel the need to call themselves atheists at all? Certainly a hard/strong atheist would be justified in doing so since they have a specific belief to describe, but since most of us do not explicitly deny the possibility of God’s existence (and rather, claim that we simply &ldquo ;have no belief in God&rdquo ;), why should we have a label like this at all? I don’t go around calling myself an “a-redhead” or an “a-woman”, or saying that I have “a-green” eyes, I’m not “a-artistic” or “a-Swahili-speaking” (feel free to translate these words into Greek for the proper effect). Similarly, a Deaf person wouldn’t go around calling themselves “a-hearing”1. Why, then, do atheists insist on using a commonly misunderstood negative label2 to describe their lack of belief in God? Aren’t we just “not theistic”? What other positiv

Science vs Religion
2007-07-28 18:00:08
What is with the resurrected war between science and religion? I must admit, I used to think that science and religion were natural enemies. How can something that relies on faith not be in direct opposition to a practice which specifically relies on reason and evidence? The thing is, it wasn’t always like that, and to some it still isn’t. Of course, there are those who choose to create conflict, but conflict isn’t necessary. Historically, science grew from the church. The first scientists were clergy, and scientific research was sponsored by the church. The church wanted to understand God’s world, and science was one of the ways they tried to do that. Before I really began looking into things myself, I thought that the only rational scientific view could be that God (as always, I use the term very loosely) does not exist. But there is so much magic in the universe that we can’t help but feel insignificant in it. Even if the universe does exist due to a co

Wow! There’s been a LOT of traffic on my site the last couple of days, mostly thanks to StumbleUpon. All that traffic has also pushed my blog up to number one (for now) at a listing of top religion blogs. I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who’s visited, commented, subscribed, and most importantly shared my posts on social networking sites. Remember, there’s a “share” link at the bottom of every post to make this part really easy… (*hint, hint*). rss, share, stumbleupon, trafficShare This

What Would Jesus Believe?
2007-08-04 22:19:39
Last week, I mentioned that science could be a way to “religious experience”, and I discussed in one of my earliest posts (Religious Eclecticism) the idea that all religions could be based on some element of truth. Don’t misunderstand me, I believe whatever truth they may be based on has been utterly distorted, but that doesn’t mean there’s no truth to be found. I think that all the “prophets” and religious leaders believed in the message they preached, but they didn’t expect (or want) their messages to be accepted as divine and unquestionable truth - they wanted people to think for themselves. I believe that Jesus , if he was a real man and if his message hadn’t been distorted by religion, would still be revered today without needing needing to claim that he was “God”1. Christians often ask themselves, “What Would Jesus Do?”, and I think if Jesus lived today, he’d be amazed by the magic all around us, a

Google is my new God
2007-08-08 07:15:44
I always knew the Christians had it wrong, but I just couldn’t put my finger on it. 9 Proofs of the REAL God: Google is the closest thing to an Omniscient (all-knowing) entity in existence, which can be scientifically verified. Google is everywhere at once (Omnipresent). Google answers prayers. Google is potentially immortal. Google is infinite. Google remembers all. Google can “do no evil” (Omnibenevolent). According to Google trends, the term “Google” is searched for more than the terms “God”, “Jesus”, “Allah”, “Buddha”, “Christianity”, “Islam”, “Buddhism” and “Judaism” combined. Evidence of Google’s existence is abundant. Although, now I’m confused - is Google God, is is it the Flying Spaghetti Monster? Oh noodley/googley one, please give me a sign, so that I may know who to worship! (via Williamely) fsm, god, googlism, humour, pastafarianism, proof, searchShare This

Scott Adams, Again
2007-08-07 17:50:17
I’m really struggling with the fact that Scott Adams continues to display a dogmaticly ignorant view of atheism. I realise he’s generally writing just to stir people up (or, as the about atheism blog describes it: trolling), but that doesn’t make it acceptable. I like Dilbert. I often enjoy Scott Adams ’ blog posts, because they do make you think. Sometimes he actually comes up with some really good thought experiments. As another commenter on my blog wrote: I always liked thought experiments that went beyond “I saw the flaws in this argument when I was three years old.” If he stayed away from things he clearly has no idea about, or actually took on board someone else’s opinion every now and then, it would be fine. But I’m finding it harder and harder to stay away from the “unsubscribe” button… atheism, dilbert, scott adams, stupidity, thought experimentsShare This

Objective Morality
2007-08-13 09:11:44
I hadn’t really come across the argument from morality much before - at least not enough to seriously think about it. I’d heard people ask “if you don’t believe in God, then where do your morals come from?”, but rather than answer the question (I’d say honestly “I don’t know”), I’d retort with the observation that Christians “pick and choose” their morals from the bible, and clearly their morals come from the same place as mine - and it’s not the bible (an idea I’d always had, but one that Dawkins helped me articulate). For those not familiar with the argument from morality, it basically goes like this1: If God does not exist, then there are no objective (i.e. independent of human opinion) moral values and duties. There are objective moral values and duties. Therefore God exists. My gut instinct when I first thought about this argument is that the first point has issues. I’ve asserted befo

Politics and Religion Down Under
2007-08-20 01:02:52
I often feel very lucky to live in Australia. Particularly when I look at how other countries are ruled by illiterate intellectually void morons (not naming any in particular, of course). I’ve also always been happy that even though Australia is a predominantly Christian nation, religion (in my lifetime, anyway) has never played a large part in politics. While I don’t think Australia will ever be as dominated by fundamentalist religious dogma as is the case in the USA, it’s scary to see religion and politics closely intertwined in Australia, as it’s certainly possibly that we could head down a similar path. Our two major party leaders, Kevin Rudd, and John Howard are both strong Christians (or, so they claim), as are many of the other Members of Parliament. Democrats1 leader Lyn Allison says there are too many federal MPs with strong religious views. Senator Allison says the separation of church and state is becoming blurred. “The Prime Minister this morni

Update (26/08): Thanks to all of you who are spreading the word, with any luck they’ll get their required members through this post alone! If you’re not eligible to vote in Australia, don’t try and join up, but help spread the word if you know other Aussie Atheists. Hey all you Aussies out there (if you’re not an Aussie, keep reading, you might still be able to help by spreading the word), I recently received an email from Frank Gomez of the Secular Party of Australia (previously the Freedom from Religion Party), which I wanted to get your help with. Members of the Secular Party are hoping to run in this year’s election, but as the party doesn’t have enough members yet, they’ll need to run as independents, giving them a much lower chance of success. Do Everything Like a Pirate
2007-09-19 07:29:59
Today was the day when every good Pastafarian (and other pirate loving people) talks like a pirate.  I, however, am a non-practicing Pastafarian, so I don’t generally observe these religious holidays (there was a pub crawl at Uni to celebrate, but I had to work instead). But that should stop you getting in on the act! Even Flickr celebrated the day: If you didn’t talk like a pirate today, you’ve only got 364 days until the next time you can “talk like a pirate and not be entirely insane”. So, I’ve been wondering - when are all the atheist holidays and festivities? atheism, flickr, fsm, holiday, pastafarianism, pirate, tlapdShare This

Did Jesus Even Exist?
2007-09-16 07:02:15
Even though I was never really a Christian (although I looked into it seriously for a year or so), I had always assumed that Jesus was, most likely, a real person. There’s a common argument1 which goes something like this: “Either Jesus was crazy, or what he said must have been true. There’s no evidence he was crazy, therefore he must be the son of God”. Sure, there are plenty of other responses to this argument, but I think the two simplest ones are: Jesus was misquoted, or misconstrued Jesus never actually existed I still maintain that if Jesus did actually exist, he would be quite unhappy about how his teachings have been butchered and interpreted today. So in some sense, I still believe the first option is quite likely. I had not, however (until recently) actually seriously considered the possibility that Jesus didn’t actually exist. The bible talks about people we know existed, right? Various Kings and so forth? So, it’s fair to assume that Je

Jesus Saves
2007-09-09 05:33:34
I’ve been away this weekend, and haven’t got around to writing a proper post, so I’ll leave you with a joke instead. Jesus and Satan were having an on-going argument about who was better on the computer. They had been going at it for days, and frankly God was tired of hearing all the bickering. Finally fed up, God said, “THAT’S IT! I have had enough. I am going to set up a test that will run for two hours, and from those results, I will judge who does the better job.” So Satan and Jesus sat down at the keyboards and typed away. They moused. They faxed. They e-mailed. They e-mailed with attachments. They downloaded. They did spreadsheets! They wrote reports. They created labels and cards. They created charts and graphs. They did some genealogy reports. They did every job known to man. Jesus worked with heavenly efficiency and Satan was faster than hell Then, ten minutes before their time was up, lightning suddenly flashed across the sky, thunder rolle

Interested in God?
2007-09-02 04:02:39
I recently1 read a post by the Friendly Christian, who questioned why some people just “aren’t interested in God”. The suggestion is made that perhaps the Church isn’t friendly or welcoming enough, and that if they improved in this area, perhaps they’d win more converts. It’s certainly a valid criticism of most of the churches I’ve gone to, as many Churches aren’t friendly to nonreligious people wanting to see what things are like. I’m utterly sick of people asking me “What church do you go to?”, and then seeing the look of shock on their face when I tell them I don’t go to any church, I’m not religious, or (worse!) if I was to use the word “atheist”. The quote being discussed by the Friendly Christian is as follows: “I’m not religious. I don’t think much about God, except when I am in a pinch and need some special favors. I have no particular reason to think he’ll deliver, but I somet

God is Dead: Death, Nietzsche and Atheism
2007-10-13 18:00:39
It seems common to think that Atheists cannot have a positive outlook on life, because the non-existence of god somehow denies life of any meaning. I recently attended a funeral (not someone I knew, but I was there to support the family) followed closely by a wedding. And then, as if it was all part of some higher plan (irony intended), I find myself listening to this podcast which I downloaded a while ago, but hadn’t got around to listening to yet. The funeral certainly reminded me of death (which, one might imagine, might be an unpleasant thing to think about), but because of my recent “brush with death”, I was able to appreciate the wedding so much more. Knowing that life will end (and will not go on forever, as many religious people might hope for) made the celebration much more special that it might have been otherwise. As Joseph Brisendine explains in the podcast - how long could you have a orgasm for before it became boring? Life is wonderful precisely because

Organised Atheism
2007-10-20 18:00:45
I’ve been holding off talking about Richard Dawkins’ “Out Campaign” for a while (yes, it’s probably all died down by now - you’ve either got a scarlet “A” on your t-shirt, website, car and baby, or you don’t) because I still haven’t figured out what I really think about it. On one hand, I applaud the effort to bring atheists together and to “out” themselves, but on the other, I still see the label “Atheist” as useful as “non-chocolate lover” or non-spice girls fan1. Of course, the use of the word “atheist” (and therefore the need to “out” oneself) has been stirred up recently by Sam Harris at an Atheist Alliance conference in Washington2 - there are no “non-racists”, so “why are we defining ourselves by something that should simply be the case”3? Every political or social group have certain beliefs and/or interests in common. A football team s
