The selfless gardner 2007-06-15 09:31:47 Elementary school students get antsy this time of year. The prospect of a carefree summer lies just ahead with thoughts of vacation, sleepovers and long, warm days. For the students at Clissold Elementary School, 2350 W. 110th Place, that warm spring weather had been bordering on the unbearable.
So about four years ago, when those long, warm days caused the adjacent asphalt lot to heat up the classrooms beyond the usually tolerable comfort level, Kathy Figel stepped in to soften up the area – both literally and figuratively.

We apologize for the error 2007-06-15 08:10:00 Cicada Alert Level:
three cicadas
Earlier this week we alarmed residents with the announcement that ground zero had moved west of Western Avenue. We quickly learned that, well, we were, uh, not exactly correct.
It is rare – no, nonexistent – that we in the media ever get anything wrong, so we were surprised to find out that by Wednesday Brood XIII had simply grown in number and had not, as we had anticipated, entirely moved. As our readers well know, journalists never make mistakes. Your correspondent here once thought that he did, but he was wrong. That was a close one.

There are no less than three in the area, and they’re all up and running and expected to offer all sorts of fresh produce right into October. Check out all of them, as they’re all different:
The Morgan Park Farmers Market is located in the Shiloah M.B. Church parking lot (at 92nd & Ashland) and is open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday through Oct. 27.

Eyes on the skies 2007-06-11 17:55:19 Cicada Alert Level:
two cicadas
Like a team skilled bird-dogs, our people at the Southwest Observer have their eyes trained to the skies - but not for our clumsy little winged visitors; rather for the unmistakable glide-and-swoop pattern of gulls gorging on unsuspecting cicadas.
And in recent days a steady stream of warm temperatures and cloudless skies has been the result of last week's cold front that swept through the region wreaking havoc across the Midwest.

Sounding off 2007-06-11 12:26:59 Now that the old Grand Trunk Western Railroad will be a train horn abatement area from 87th and Kedzie to 103rd Street just north of Mount Greenwood (joining an abatement area on the old Baltimore and Ohio Railroad from 87th to 99th along Maplewood near Beverly), area residents will be able to sleep a little easier. Both abatement areas have been created at the request of the Village of Evergreen Park. Is there a need for the city to request such an abatement for both lines as they continue through Mount Greenwood and Beverly?

Dog days, truly dog days 2007-06-08 23:05:31 When two Alaskan huskies tore into a chicken coop at Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences June 6, mauling and killing more than 20 birds, it set off the latest debate over how to properly care for domesticated pets.
The dogs - whose rabies vaccinations were up to date - were strolling unleashed with their owners through the 1.5 miles of trails that wind through the area when they attacked the animals that were housed on the high school's grounds.
So, in light of the mauling, how should Mount Greenwood residents handle their canine pets?

A Bohne to pick 2007-06-08 12:15:42 A.D. 1992. Heady times in the American psyche: Boris Yeltsin announced that Russia would stop targeting American cities with nuclear weapons. Manuel Noriega was sentenced to 40 years on drug charges. Johnny Carson said his farewell as “The Tonight Show” host.
And “Defending the Caveman” – stand-up comedian Rob Becker’s one-man examination of the gender gap – made its theater debut.

You'd take shelter, too, against 40 mph winds 2007-06-07 22:51:32 Cicada Alert Level:

Speeding, ignoring stop signs concern Beverly residents 2007-06-19 14:57:25 Speeding and ignoring stop signs
have been a concern for residents
in the area around Ridge Park, and Chicago police addressed those concerns during the monthly CAPS meeting for Beat 2213 June 14 at Ridge Park.
A representative from the Beverly
Area Planning Association told the group that an ordinance adopted in February imposes a $100 fine and a mandatory court appearance for anyone who issued a ticket for speeding or blowing a stop sign.
