What is the most pressing issue in Mount Greenwood? 2007-09-28 15:11:43 Just a couple weeks ago neighbors throughout Mount Greenwood
celebrated the 100th anniversary of its incorporation.
Throughout the week leading up to the weekend bash, held Sept. 8 and 9 at Mount Greenwood Park, neighbors talked about how close-knit the community is and offered their own suggestions as to why it has remained a vibrant, family-oriented neighborhood for a century.
But others raised concerns about the lack of commercial development - despite a still-healthy housing market.

Jones, who was granted a release from his scholarship Sept. 21 to play for any team that will not be an opponent of Notre Dame during the course of his eligibility (which runs through 2010), enrolled Thursday at No. 24 Cincinnati

Quarterback sneak 2007-09-27 15:23:17 Former Morgan Park star Demetrius Jones, who started at quarterback in the Notre Dame season-opener but subsequently lost the job to Jimmy Clausen, was granted his release Sept. 21 to play for any team that will not be an opponent of Notre Dame during the course of his eligibility, which runs through 2010.
He's expected to enroll at Northern Illinois University, where he allegedly has attended class (the NCAA requires that transfer students attend school by the 12th day of classes in order to be eligible to play the following season).

"Terrorism ... cannot change who we are" 2007-09-19 23:23:37 Former Secretary of State Colin Powell drew the biggest crowd yet for SXU's Voices & Visions speaker series Sept. 19. - Photo courtesy Saint Xavier University
The Sisters of Mercy have a place in the heart of former Secretary of State Colin L. Powell, who stopped at Saint Xavier University’s Shannon Center Wednesday night for the second lecture in the SXU Voices and Visions Speaker Series.
He noted that Saint Xavier University was formed in 1846, just a year earlier than his own alma mater, the City College of New York, and that they served similar purposes.

Along with the prize, he claimed the $25,000 purse after defeating international and hot dog-eating legend, Takeru Kobayashi, and this year's Nathan's Hot Dog Eating champion, Joey Chestnut.

The state of our public high schools 2007-10-11 10:04:04 Chicago Magazine recently surveyed 233 public schools in the Chicago area on everything from graduation rates to racial makeup to standardized test scores ... and both the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences and Morgan Park High School fared pretty well in several instances.
Attendance rates, for example, measure students' desire to be in school. Although the Chicago Public Schools system has 94% of the most poorly attended schools, attendance rates at both local high schools -- while not stellar -- are in the top third.

Alzheimer's may be linked to dropout rate 2007-10-11 09:47:21 By Darren Swan
Medill News Service - Chicago
High school dropouts are at higher risk for Alzheimer
's disease compared to their graduating counterparts -- regardless of income, physical activity and occupation, according to a Finnish study published Oct. 2 in the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.
If that correlation remains constant over time it could mean serious trouble for a large number of Chicago's youth who do not receive their high school diplomas.

When will it stop? 2007-10-10 17:02:42 Tis the season to decorate our abodes with witches and goblins and spooky creatures. . .Tis the season for vandalism. . .My neighbor spent a couple of hours decorating her front porch with scarecrows, beautiful mums, and of course, pumpkins.
Early the next morning, I found her pumpkins smashed and scattered all over the street and across the street.
Is anything sacred anymore? The children do not have anything better to do than to walk the streets and find other peoples personal property and destroy it??

Campaign delivers scoop on check scams 2007-10-10 15:28:38 By Valerie Dowdle and Anna-Louise Jackson
Medill Reports - Chicago
When Chicago Ridge resident Roy Knudson found a check for almost $3,000 in the mail, it was like money had fallen from the sky.
Shortly before the windfall, Knudson, 51, suffered a brain hemorrhage. The medical bills were adding up, and his mother, Joan, said the check came at the right time.
"We could've used [the money], no doubt about it," Joan, 71, said. "It seemed too good to be true."
But it landed with a string attached: The winnings were from Canada, so there would be customs fees.

School funding tug-of-war continues 2007-10-18 09:30:17 Sri Raman
Medill Reports -- Chicago
As the tug-of-war over property tax relief legislation continues in Springfield between the House and Gov. Rod Blagojevich, public school administrators across Cook County are bracing for the impact.
The bulk of school funding comes from property taxes, and the schools don't receive the money until homeowners pay their taxes to the county. Property tax bills were scheduled to go out in August, but won't be mailed until the dispute in Springfield is settled.

Anyone missing a dozen parakeets? 2007-10-15 19:44:59 Seriously. We heard some rumors Saturday afternoon that about a dozen parakeets - most bigger than a squirrel - were in the area of Mount Greenwood Cemetery.
Sure enough, when we headed over there, we found that they had made their way out of the graveyard and into the trees at nearby Annie Keller school. Within half an hour, though, they had headed south toward 111th Street.
