Medill Reports - Chicago
Avoid contact with wild animals and keep pets current on their rabies vaccinations.
That's the advice from state officials in response to the increasing numbers of confirmed rabid bats in Illinois this year.
"Because we have infringed upon the wild populations considerably, [pet] exposure is always a possibility," said Cheryl Johnson, supervising veterinarian for Morgan Park Animal Hospital. "It's really foolish not to have them vaccinated."

Government incentives heat up solar power 2007-08-21 12:41:41 By Elisabeth Kwak-Hefferan
Medill Reports-Chicago
Solar power
sounds like the perfect solution for eco-friendly homeowners: Just install a few rooftop panels and watch as carbon dioxide emissions and electric bills plummet.
It's not quite that easy. Renewable solar energy does come with a steep up-front investment, but environmentalists with thin wallets are in luck. State and federal incentives help people justify the splurge on solar-perks experts say are vital for this burgeoning clean energy source.

Medill Repotrs - Chicago
Rev. Rene Mena didn't realize what he was getting into when he came to the U.S. to become a priest.
"I expected the church in the U.S. to be just like Mexico," he said. "I thought I was going to be like a monk, you know, and wear a long, white cassock."
Instead, Mena said he makes house calls to the sick, baptizes children by the dozen and worries about the homeless in Little Village. At his church's Augustfest, he wore a plaid shirt as he swept up napkins from the sidewalk in front of St. Agnes of Bohemia Catholic Church.
