Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
2007-06-16 12:28:00
With a history of stellar records, Spoon has topped themselves with Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, a thrilling album recorded throughout 2006 in Austin by the band and Mike McCarthy (except "The Underdog," recorded in Los Angeles with Jon Brion.) The Britt Daniel originals on Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga comprise possibly his most heartfelt batch of songs since 2001’s Girls Can Tell. It's worth pointing out that Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga is comprised of ten songs, the perfect number of songs for an album (see Fulfillingness' First Finale, Seventeen Seconds, Back In Black, The Queen Is Dead, The Charm of the Highway Strip, Nebraska, Nashville Skyline, Heroes, Unknown Pleasures, The Violent Femmes, The Woods, Sticky Fingers, etc.). We’ve also got it on good authority that 36 minutes is the ideal album length.Site : Spoon Similar Artists: Wilco, Modest Mouse, Ted Leo & The Pharmacists, Yo La Tengo, Hot Hot Heat

The Apples In Stereo - Science Faire
2007-06-16 12:28:00
Maybe it's not quite rocket science, but "Science Faire" is an interesting compilation for any fans of the Apples in Stereo . Compiled out of EPs and singles that the band created during the early 90s, it's rough and unpolished, but has a certain exuberant charm.Fun percussion and a driving riff start off the fun "Tidal Wave," before the dense fuzz-rock of "Motorcar" and "Not the Same," and the rural pop sound of "Turncoat Indian." And some songs like "Running in Circles just exude fun and enthusiasm, with a simple dancey melody and some heavy instrumental layers. But only "Hypnotic Suggestion's" twisting electric riffs hint at the less conventional possibilities that lie under all the fuzz and hooks.Usually there is a reason why songs are released in these compilations -- often they're not so good. The Apples in Stereo don't fall prey to that, although there isn't really a standout track here -- they're all pleasant, but none will make listeners shriek "wow!" and hit the repeat

Ola Podrida - Ola Podrida
2007-06-16 10:56:00
Already David Wingo's résumé has been discussed almost as much as his music. He is a film composer by day, most notably for the movies of southern director David Gordon Green (including his upcoming Snow Angels), and this experience may or may not be relevant to his debut with his band Ola Podrida. It's tempting to read these 11 songs on the group's debut as extensions of Wingo's soundtracks, as the band name implies: Ola Podrida is a variation on the Spanish term olla podrida, which refers specifically to a stew and generally to any sort of miscellany. Podrida itself means rotten, suggesting a dish made of ingredients unused in previous recipes. The implication is that this group is a secondary outlet for Wingo and the album a catch-all for mood-setting music that didn't fit into a film. If that's really the case, it's impossible to tell. Ola Podrida is a cohesive, confident album full of folky, quiet guitars and thoughtful lyrics that coalesce into complete songs. But wha

Liars - Liars
2007-06-16 06:56:00
On August 28, the folks at Mute will release Liars ' Liars, the band's fourth long-player. Yes, a self-titled album from the band that brought you They Threw Us All in a Trench and Stuck a Monument on Top and They Were Wrong, So We Drowned. (Looks like their first choice , We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, was already taken.) Apparently, this new album serves as Angus Andrew's big Neil Young moment. Says Andrew: "I'd never felt like a songwriter 'til this album... If you said I'd be playing guitar solos, I'd have called you a liar." So that's the "chilled out vibe" they muttered about on last check, eh? Liars will come three ways: on a CD, a slab of albino vinyl, and through the magic of computer technology. The tracklist is posted below; you'll note the utter lack of longwinded statements-as-titles this time out, a trick Modest Mouse can apparently keep for themselves.Site : Liars Similar Artists: Deerhoof, Xiu Xiu, TV On The Radio, The Fiery Furnaces

The White Stripes - Icky Thump
2007-06-15 14:25:00
Album number six from the Detroit based garage rock duo is the follow up to 2005's Grammy Award winning 'Get Behind Me Satan.' Produced by Jack White himself and recorded over a period of three weeks in Nashville, 'Icky Thump ' signals a welcome return to the band's trademark blues rock sound, yet with a few surprises thrown in. Flamenco rhythms, bagpipes and trumpets are just some of the unexpected elements that make an appearance over the course of the album, giving the band a new dimension whilst retaining their raw playing style and unquestionable songwriting skill.Site: White StripesSimilar Artists: Detroit Cobras, Soledad Brothers, The Dirtbombs, The Sonics

Elf Power - Nothings Going To Happen
2007-06-15 12:19:00
There are plenty of reasons to be excited about an Elf Power covers album. For one thing, the band hit a creative and technical high with last spring's Creatures, so the promise of any new Elf Power is a strong temptation. Then there's the group's choice of covers, which is certain to excite any rock fan; Nothing's Going to Happen includes songs written by Hüsker Dü, Bad Brains, The Buzzcocks, The Misfits, The Frogs, Gary Numan and Chris Knox, as well as an entire suite of Roky Erickson tunes.Site: Elf PowerSimilar Artists: The Apples In Stereo, The Olivia Tremor Control, Beulah, Neutral Milk Hotel, Of Montreal, Circulatory System, The Mountain Goats

Elf Power - Back To The Web
2007-06-15 12:18:00
On April 24th, Elf Power return with their Rykodisc debut, Back to the Web, a haunting, twisting journey weaving its way through heavy psychedelic haze, to soulful, melodic folk, to stomping T Rex-styled rock. Back to the Web is full of the band's signature, lovely pop melodies, but a distinct progression is evident in the songwriting and the lush, full production. The folkier tunes are laced with strings and the heavier ones scream psychedelia; influences of Bob Dylan and Wall-era Pink Floyd can be detected. Singer/songwriter Andrew Rieger comments, "I was listening to a lot of middle eastern folk and gypsy music when I started writing these songs and I tried to emulate some of those sounds by combining 12 string acoustic guitar with violin and accordion. Our last album was more of a straight ahead rock record, so in reaction this one came out as more of a dark, orchestrated folk rock album." Formed in Athens, GA in 1994, Elf Power was spawned from the legendary Elephant 6 collective

Elf Power - The Winter Is Coming
2007-06-15 12:16:00
Elf Power's fourth full length CD, The Winter Is Coming, is the cleanest distillation so far of their melodic psychedelica. Taking their cue from both the gentler and dronier aspects of The Velvet Underground, co-founders Andrew Rieger and Laura Carter steer their artsy collective towards a fascinating middleground. The John Cale influenced "Wings of Light" could be a prime Velvet Underground and Nico outtake. "The Sun Is Forever" unfolds as a folksy nugget. For the most part these songs are idylls, free of either angst or subtext. The titles tell you more than the songs - "Embrace the Crimson Tide", "Green Sea Days", "Birds in the Backyard". The titles are, in fact, all the songs are about whereas with the VU a title like "Heroin" was just a beginning. If you're willing to let Elf Power's neo-psychedlica wash over you, though, they occasionally provide a compelling trip.Site: Elf PowerSimilar Artists: The Apples In Stereo, The Olivia Tremor Control, Beulah, Neutral Milk Hotel, Of M

Elf Power - Daytrotter Session
2007-06-15 12:15:00
There wasn’t much that was bigger for me than the Elephant 6 Collective, during my collegiate years, not all so long ago. The funny thing is that I didn’t smoke weed, had only glimpsed at a bong for an uncomfortable, short period of time, had never gotten into Tolkien or even thought to consider illogical prose cathartic – the highest form of beautiful inspiration. It could have been that course on literature of the fantastic, where I was forced – by a bespectacled, middle-aged man with a permanent frog in his throat — to read Lewis Carroll in a different light and I was introduced to the illogical mastermind of Italo Calvino. I found the Fairy Tails of Hermann Hesse, which are some of the most underrated pieces in the category that I’ve ever come upon. I’d be reading these books – these works that opened up worlds of implausibility – in the afternoons and evenings and sometimes during the same time or afterwards, I’d be making new friends with Kevin Barnes, Andrew

Elf Power - When The Red King Comes
2007-06-15 12:14:00
The second Elf Power album, When The Red King Comes, was recorded as a four-piece. Aaron Wegelin joined on drums, allowing Laura to move to keyboards (and many other instruments). It is a joint release between Elephant 6 and the Arena Rock Recording Company featuring contributions from John and Will (The Olivia Tremor Control, The Circulatory System), Kevin Barnes (Of Montreal), Dave Wrathgeber (Fablefactory), Jeff Mangum (Neutral Milk Hotel) and Julian Koster (The Music Tapes, Neutral Milk Hotel), amongst others.Site: Elf PowerSimilar Artists: The Apples In Stereo, The Olivia Tremor Control, Beulah, Neutral Milk Hotel, Of Montreal, Circulatory System, The Mountain Goats

Elf Power - A Dream In Sound
2007-06-15 12:14:00
Hailing from Athens, Georgia, and often discussed in the same breath as psychedelic upstarts Olivia Tremor Control and Neutral Milk Hotel (since they all operate under the loose umbrella of the Elephant Six collective), Elf Power are an eccentric rock quartet that perform engaging, subtle music with a sonically subversive underbelly. On the band's third full-length release, songwriter Andrew Rieger shows a penchant for clever wordplay on tunes like "All the Passengers" and "O What a Beautiful Dream ." Along with band members Bryan Helium, Aaron Wegelin, and Laura Carter, Rieger takes the listener on a quirky musical journey that is as surreal as it is smart with unconventional instrumentation and random noise filtering throughout. With cameos by Athens alt-rock royalty, this marks the dawning of a new psychedelic underground.Site: Elf PowerSimilar Artists: The Apples In Stereo, The Olivia Tremor Control, Beulah, Neutral Milk Hotel, Of Montreal, Circulatory System, The Mountain Goats

Elf Power - Creatures
2007-06-15 12:14:00
Creatures is Elf Power’s fifth full-length and most streamlined release. The Athens, Georgia, quartet has long boasted a depth that seems to elude many of their cohorts in the Elephant Six collective. Earlier releases served notice of their ambitions: nothing less than head-on ‘60s garage rock and psychedelia cross-bred with ‘70s glam and power pop and brought into line with vocalist Andrew Rieger’s lyrical obsessions. On Creatures these ambitions finally congeal into a seamless mesh of pop craft and imaginative flight. Rieger’s Brothers Grimm-type serpents and castles typically serve as both psychedelically inspired dream images as well as archetypal caricatures representing the absurdities of modern life. And here, the lyrics are married to the band’s most visceral music to date. The cellos that underpin "The Unseen Hand" or the unfettered guitars propelling "Everlasting Scream," for example, subtly underscore the substance of the songs (whose themes of foreboding and rel

Ignoto is one of the most unique and exciting British debuts in recent years. Yourcodenameis:Milo have drawn comparisons with acts as diverse as Joy Division, Fugazi, Radiohead and Mars Volta and their Flood-produced album justifies all of this. These five extremely creative young men have made an uncompromising album that is clear from the opening bars of "I Am Connecting Flight", through to the live favourite "Schteeve" and the single, "17".

Death From Above 1979 - Head Up!
2007-06-15 10:29:00
Death From Above 1979 (DFA) blazed across the indie world and into that nether region between mainstream success and credibility. "You're a Woman, I'm a Machine" had some major money behind it, Vice's record imprint is technically part of Atlantic... I should say, major force, if not funds. That album was a short blast of dance-punk/metal noise that was wholly unexpected by most. Jesse's angular bass chops and Sebastian's furious Joy Division-esqe drumming created a heady brew. The mostly tongue in cheek lyrics and occasional analog synth blast just added to the mix. However, bass and drum noisecore bands are nothing new: Lightning Bolt has been rocking that scene for over ten years. But making the same style music poppy (and sing-a-long) was pretty much unheard of. It's hard to quantify what made them so magic, but their only LP is insanely hard to put down... even over a year later.Their first EP, "Heads Up" has since been reissued, to help fill in the catalog. Whether this is a

Kasabian - S/T
2007-06-15 10:27:00
Domestic badasses are usually pretty one-dimensional. From the musclebound Joe Weider plank snapper to the wizened loose-cannon drunk or the free-swinging pro athlete, they're just different versions of the same uninteresting dolt. That's why English louts often seen more interesting to us Americans than our homegrown ones. Buoyed by football, illicit drugs, and lager-- or the remnants of mid-90s lad culture in general-- these types often take an elemental approach to bad behavior. They integrate torrents of entertaining drunk speak into fistfights both won and lost; they're boastful, prideful, or just plain full. They're going to live fast and die young, but not until after the kebab shops close. Kasabian is the latest UK outfit to tap into this bravado conduit, and as they've shown over singles ranging back to the beginning of 2004 (all of which appear on this self-titled debut LP), the Leicester combo likes their hedonism a la carte. "Processed Beats" apes shamelessly the shamb

Figurine - Transportation + Communication = Love
2007-06-14 21:49:00
Transportation + Communication = Love, Figurine's debut CD, was originally released in 1998 on California's Blackbean & Placenta Records. The trio of David Figurine, James Figurine, and Meredith Figurine, inspired by the likes of Aphex Twin and Depeche Mode, set out to produce a new kind of synth-based indie pop. Creating all the music on computer, the trio... More collaborated via e-mail, as the group was scattered across the United States. The disc begins with "I Wait for You (By the Telephone)," on which Meredith and James alternate on vocals over telephone sounds, creating an upbeat and intriguing opener. Highlights include the computerized frenzy on the somber "An Electronic Address," the Kraftwerk-inspired "Batteries (Can't Help Me Now)," and the playful "My First UFO." The droning dance beats of "Eurodiscoteque," the restrained excitement of "New Millenium Song," and a live recording of "You" bring the disc to a near end. Blackbean & Placenta reissued the disc in August 2002.

Figurine - Eleven Number Remix
2007-06-14 21:14:00
We love a bit of Tamborello here, from the Postal Service to DNTEL to his latest album as James Figurine, the man has kept us on our toes with his distinct sound and crucial blends of pop and electronics. Now though he hands his tracks over to the careful and loving hands of Kompakt's finest - DJ Koze and Superpitcher. Koze is first up and throws together a version of 'Apologies' with the grace and style that made his debut album so affecting. Reminiscent of Farben-era Jan Jelinek (which we all know was his best work) this is a slow burning, brooding monster of a track with all the minimal charm and dancefloor push you need to get those dancing feet moving. Flip over and you'll find the Superpitcher cut, one for the sweaty clubs of Cologne this is a synth-heavy monster based on the track '55566688833' and gives the great Georgio Moroder a run for his money.Site: Sigur Ros Similar Artists: Mogwai, M83, Album Leaf, AIR, Explosions In The Sky

Why? - Rubber Trait
2007-06-14 20:20:00
It was bound to cause controversy, Why?; a member of erstwhile madcore hiphoppers Clouddead does an indie album. Because 'Elephant Eyelash' was exactly that, devoid of his previous hiphoppish flow, Why? was singing, he had guitars, he had drums, he had real songs! An album which sounded much like Sebadoh or Pavement B-Sides run through a broken sampler and then injected with some tearful Oakland soul. People got mad, Anticon was losing it's hiphop cred rapidly, and thank goodness; a label taking a risk. The lead track on this small EP is culled from said album and was easily one of the tightest tracks, featuring a chorus that is destined to haunt all your trips to the toilet for the next lifetime (trust me... it's infectious). We are treated to a video which sets 'Rubber Traits' to pictures in rather a B3ta fashion; singing dogs, literal representation of the lyrics and the words popping up on the screen karaoke style. As horrible as that might sound, it works pretty well and is

Sigur Rós - Von
2007-06-19 18:46:00
The production of the album took a long time, and the end result sounded significantly different from the original recordings. The band considered scrapping the final result and starting all over again, but decided not to because it would have made the process too long. In exchange for recording time, Sigur Rós painted the studio they recorded in. Von was originally released in Iceland to moderate critical acclaim, but went relatively unnoticed abroad. In the first year following the release, Von sold only 313 copies in Iceland. Following the band's popular international releases, Ágætis byrjun and ( ), it was re-released in the United Kingdom in September 2004, and in the United States a month later. In December 2005, Von and Ágætis byrjun were declared platinum albums in Iceland. The sixth track consists of 18 seconds of silence, and gave name to Sigur Rós's official website, eighteen seconds before sunrise. The last track starts with more silence, then consists of a portion

Sigur Rós - Ba Ba Ti Ki Di Do
2007-06-19 18:37:00
This is a very interesting release for Sigur Ros. Completely different from their two full lengths, but that's good isn't it? We don't want bands making the same album a bunch of times. (Not that the first two were "the same" really). This is entirely instrumental, and much more minimal and abstract than the other albums."Ba Ba" gradually materializes from silence with a gentle, ethereal, keyboard melody, which keeps unfolding to reveal more little melodies of music boxes winding up, bells, and pianos. It really evokes a magical kind of dream-like atmosphere in the clouds. I think this track really flows the best and sounds the fullest, sounds like it could be from ()."Ti Ki" has more music box sounds and odd repetitive electronic dings. very sparse for a while then really builds up.The last track "Di Do" is kind of creepy, with strange mangled robotic voices repeating the song titles, and swooshing noises, but actually evolves into a good rhythm for a while until the song is tortur

The Rapture - Pieces Of The People We Love
2007-06-18 19:00:00
The Rapture wasn't the first band to revisit the clanky dance-punk sounds of bands like P.I.L. and Gang of Four. But with its DFA-produced debut, 2003's Echoes, and the accompanying underground hit, "House of Jealous Lovers," the Brooklyn quartet proved itself to be the most worthy. On its follow-up, the group makes a dramatic left turn with a new crew of producers (Ewan Pearson and Paul Epworth, plus a pair of tracks recorded with Danger Mouse of Gorillaz and Gnarlz Barkley fame) and a more sophisticated sound that yields pop gems like "Whoo! Alright Yeah… Uh Huh" and "The Devil." Reassuringly, the saxophones, cowbells and singer Luke Jenner's unintelligible yelps are still present, as is all the manic energy that goes along with it.
