Commercial Games In Linux…
2007-07-26 09:25:06
I recently wrote about 11 great games in Ubuntu, and then I later wrote about 5 more games in Ubuntu, and all those games were, and still are completely free. However, after writing about those games, I have received many suggestions for commercial games. So I’ve decided to compile a list of non-free games for Linux . These are just a few that I have personally came across, and in no particular order, are just here to prove that there is a small, but growing market for Linux games.Doom 3 Cold War Tribal Trouble Penumbra Overture Tribes 2 Share This

Helium…
2007-07-25 16:54:10
He-The chemical symbol for Helium. I’m not talking about that Helium; I’m talking about the service called Helium. Helium allows you to write about what you know, and then get paid for it. Folks, this is a legitimate site. I’ve tried a few sites that didn’t do what they promised, however this one works. There is every topic imaginable on there, and it can become quite addicting. To make it simple, the more you write, you more money you make. Helium is like blogging, just without the blog. As a blogger, sometimes I get “writers block”, meaning I can’t figure out what to write about. Helium has solved that for me, because you can browse the topics, and find new topics you wouldn’t have ever though about! Although you are very unlikely to get rich off of it, it is a great way to make a few extra bucks a week. Although you can sign up for free at Helium, if you contact me, I can send you an email that will allow you to join for free as well,

Computerized Democracies…
2007-07-24 19:27:29
“A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine“-Thomas Jefferson I recently recalled my World History teacher explaining to the class how, if it were called for, here in the United States we could setup a true Democracy. He believed it was possible because of the widespread use of computers, and how everyone could simply vote on issues that came up. Although some technical issues would more than likely complicate the process (For example, if it is as easy as it sounds, why don’t we hold elections this way?), I agree that it would be possible, but just because setting up a true Democracy is possible, I don’t believe it would would be the best possible way to govern the United States. “Whenever the people are well-informed, they can be trusted with their own government“-Thomas Jefferson I believe that in order for America’s people to govern themselves entirely, w

Ubuntu So Hated Because…
2007-07-27 17:29:37
I’ve noticed something the last few weeks when it comes to Ubuntu . All over the place, you have numerous Linux users that constantly bash Ubuntu. No, I’m not talking about the people on Digg that bury stories because you use the word “Ubuntu” in a story, I’m talking about the mindless zombies that will tell you “Ubuntu sucks”, and then can’t answer to you why it sucks. I’ve asked many people in various IRC channels why they say Ubuntu sucks. None of them can explain to me why, and most of the time they are either using Debian or Gentoo. What about these two distros is better than Ubuntu? Sure, Ubuntu may be a fork of Debian, but does that make Debian better? The way I see it, Ubuntu is the best thing to ever happen to Linux. Sure, I’ll admit that some other distros may perform better, and may work better for Linux elites, but Ubuntu has brought in so many new Linux users. Although you may hate Dell, what other distro is curre

Wordpress Worm…
2007-08-01 08:43:21
If you are using Wordpress 2.2.1, there is a security hole in several of you PHP files that allow an attacker to edit your PHP files on your server. Although you could wait until Wordpress is officially patched, “MyBeni” has created a worm that uses the hole and patches your PHP for you. Although knowingly running a worm on your blog isn’t encouraged, I was bored so I figured I’d give it a try to see if it works (it does). So after I backed up everything, I followed the instructions. For those of you also wishing to test this, you can follow my instructions I’ve provided here. Although I haven’t seen anything that it may have done (maliciously), it is possible that I have missed something, so do so at your own risk! Step 1 Leave a comment at your blog pointing to http://mybeni.rootzilla.de/mybeNi/ Step 2 Login to your Wordpress admin panel. Step 3 View your latest comment, the one you pasted, and click the link from within your Wordpress admin panel

Text-Link Ads…
2007-07-31 18:40:13
Text-Link Ads is a program that allows you to make money by selling links on your site. Sign up is free, and you simply submit your site and then add the code, or install the plugin in Wordpress. Instead of relying on people to click your ads in Google Adsense, in Text-Link Ads people pay you anywhere from fifteen to several hundred dollars to simply place an link to their site on your site. If you have a good PageRank as well as a good Alexa rating, advertisers will be more likely to buy a link, as well as pay more for your link. Although after setting up Text-Link Ads, it can take weeks or months for anyone to buy an ad, it is possible to make hundreds of dollars a month from it. If you are looking to gain traffic to your site, you can buy ads, and gain those needed monthly visitors. Although you could possibly manually pay someone to place an ad on your site, Text-Link Ads serves as a safeguard from being scammed. After buying an ad from Text-Link Ads, it will show up on the site un

Fechr (Pronounced Feature) is a great new site designed for promoting websites! You simple submit your site, and then eventually they will put your site on their homepage for 24 hours, sending you hundreds if not thousands of views! Although now being “featured” is free, the webmasters plan on charging $5 in a couple months, so try it while it is free! I’ve signed up, and I think I will update this post after I’ve been featured, describing how it went! Get Featured! Share This

ScribeFire…
2007-07-29 17:34:05
ScribeFire is a Firefox extension that allows you to blog from Firefox, instead of having to login to your blog’s site. ScribeFire makes managing multiple blogs as easy as possible, as it will remember the username and password for each blog, as well as switching from blog to blog with the click of a button. Not only does ScribeFire allow you to post to your blog, it also has various tools that allow you to extend your blogging. All from within ScribeFire, you can view Technorati links, bookmark your posts to Del.Icio.Us, ping multiple services when posting, and also save notes for viewing later. ScribeFire handles all of my blogging needs, the only thing I could see as an improvement would be if it integrated an FTP client. ScribeFire works with virtually every blogging platform available, so it should work for you! Image of ScribeFire Being Used Share This

Google Analytics In Wordpress…
2007-08-03 17:56:30
If you want to be a successful blogger, then you need to know certain things about your visitors. No, I’m not talking about what they did last weekend, I’m talking about what OS they are using, browser, screen resolution, where they live, where they came from (to get to your site), what links they clicked on your site, how long they stayed on your site, etc. I was using the Wordpress Stats Plugin, but it didn’t quite cut it. Although it was built into Wordpress, it didn’t provide all the statistics that I wanted. Google Analytics is completely free, provides all the statistics that you will need, and also is just as easy to install as the Wordpress Stats is. Google Analytics will tell you what country your visitors are from, who their ISP is, what form of internet they have (dial-up, cable, etc), how long they stayed on your site, what site they went to after yours, what link they clicked to get to yours, which links they clicked on yours, what OS they are usi

However, for the rest of you, perhaps it looks like a simple substitution code. If you took the time, perhaps you could decipher it. If you had a key, which of course you would have if you were supposed to read it, it would take considerably less time. Here is the key, decipher it! However, that would take a long time, and frankly I don’t want to waste your time, or lose your attention. So instead of doing it by hand, you can use this website to decode the message. Hot Traffic (Hotlinking)…
2007-08-02 06:50:38
Imagine veiwing a post in your blog, and realizing all of the images you were displaying in the post were replaced with this one. That is exactly what happened to the owner of this site. I suppose eventually he will realize that his images are useless, so I’ve taken a screenshot. The administrator of Lin and Win was “hotlinking”, or directly linking to my images on my server, and displaying them on his site as his own. I really don’t care that he took my article and rewrote it, I do that sometimes. I probably wouldn’t have said anything if he downloaded the images and hosted them himself (a little more work for him). However, hot-linking my images was the limit. I found a way I could prevent this, and you can do it too! This method will only work if you host your site, instead of using Wordpress, Blogspot, Etc to do it for you. Your hosting also needs to support mod_rewrite, which is a module in Apache. .htaccess Create a file titled “.htaccess&rd

Tilda (Terminal)…
2007-08-06 12:05:48
Tilda is a Linux terminal taking after the likeness of many classic terminals from first person shooter games, Quake, Doom and Half-Life (to name a few), where the terminal has no border and is hidden from the desktop until a key is pressed. (Press F1) If you need Terminal accessible by the touch of a key, Tilda is what you need! Not only does it give you quick access to Terminal, it also has numerous options to change the way it looks. Furthermore, Tilda looks great using Liberation Mono. If you are using Ubuntu and would like to try Tilda for yourself, simply install it via Add/Remove, or run:sudo apt-get install tilda Tilda is started from Applications–>Accessories–>Tilda

Following You…
2007-08-05 08:25:03
From now on, when Google sees the attribute (rel=”nofollow”) on hyperlinks, those links won’t get any credit when we rank websites in our search results. -Google Blog The “No Follow” tag was created to combat spam, and any recent version of Wordpress uses it. For example, when a user visits your site, fills in the “Website” field while leaving a comment, and submits his or her comment, Google never uses that link in any of its ranking. However, the “No Follow” tag hasn’t helped prevent spamming at all. Furthermore, to prevent spam, use the Akismet Wordpress Plugin. Because the tag didn’t prevent spam, some people insist that we should no longer use the tag. In doing so, you are promoting commenting on your blog, as well as helping out the bloggers that comment on your site. Do do participate in this “Follow” movement, I’ve installed a plugin from Semiologic that disables the “No Follow” ta

Firefox’s Opera…
2007-08-07 15:23:02
No, not some awkward opera performance of “Firefox -Taking Back The Web”, but instead reasons why I recently switched to Opera after using Firefox for several years. Although I am excited that 80% of my visitors use Firefox, I recently tried Opera, and was amazed by its performance. I am in no way saying that Opera (or Firefox) is better than the other (but I am saying they both are better than IE). Although Opera works better for me than Firefox does, there will be some of you that have to have that one Firefox extension, etc. Here are five features that you can install extensions so that Firefox will provide them, or simply install Opera to get these, and many more features by default. 1)Speed Dial Firefox Extension -Demo If there is one reason you should try Opera today, it is “speed dial”. Speed dial allows you to “bookmark” up to nine pages, and essentially allow you to access them within seconds. Either click the thumbnail, or hit control+(1-9)

Climate Bugs…
2007-08-11 14:22:53
Not only are the methods for gathering climate change data inaccurate, but there was also a bug in the NASA Climate Data. As it turned out, a Y2K bug caused 1998 to appear as the hottest year on record, when in reality 1934 was. Also, after NASA corrected their records, 5 of the 10 hottest years on record occurred before WWII (after WWII, industry boomed, and CO2 levels began to rise). If human activity is supposed to be the cause of global warming, how can the 5 years before industry boomed be explained?

Tesseract In Ubuntu Feisty…
2007-08-16 18:29:12
Tesseract is an open source OCR (Optical Character Recognition) engine. In simple terms, it allows you to scan a document, and then (automatically) convert the text on the document to a .txt document. Instead of spending hours typing text from a piece of paper, simply scan the paper, save it as a .tif, and then convert to a text file. Setting this up on Ubuntu is extremely easy, and can be done from terminal: sudo apt-get install tesseract-ocr After installing, converting from .tif (image) to text is extremely easy. Here is a .tif so that you can try Tesseract. Simply save the file (to your desktop), and then run this command: tesseract ./Desktop/phototest.tif ./Desktop/phototest Now on your desktop you will have a phototest.txt, allowing you to open and use the text however you like! To convert other documents, simply type:tesseract /path/to/.tif /path/to/.txt For tips on scanning and optimizing the .tif, see here.

For example, using DevilsPie, you can remove window borders, taskbar entries, etc. Using this forum, I was able to stick terminal to my desktop, however with no borders, it appears to actually be the background. You can install DevilsPie by running: sudo apt-get install devilspie Although installing DevilsPie is easy, using it, however, is not. More on this can be found at DevilsPie.

Tsar Bombs (Scorched 3d In Ubuntu)…
2007-09-21 19:34:03
The Tsar bomb, with a blast yeild of 50 megatons, was the largest bomb ever tested by humans. Tested in 1961 by the Soviets in Novaya Zemlya, it was a mighty sight indeed. Why…you can use a Tsar bomb in Scorched 3D! Scorched 3D is an artillery based game with online play. Why Does Ubuntu Suck…
2007-09-17 17:12:02
I was playing America’s Army, however since I am running Ubuntu on this machine, I have to play version 2.5 instead of the latest version. So, of course, everyone else that uses 2.5 also is either using Linux or a Mac. It’s a great place to catch up on some of the latest news, and also discuss distros. One “l33t haxor” immediately started spewing off “Ubuntu Sucks”, just like all other experienced Linux users. Once and for all, I would like to know why Ubuntu sucks? Ubuntu has done what no other distro has done. Dell currently sells PCs with Ubuntu on them. Ubuntu has grown to be the largest Linux distro, and is expected to be installed on somewhere between 6 and 12 million PCs. Ubuntu has gathered many Windows users that hadn’t heard of Linux before it. Perhaps your Debian is better for you, and perhaps even runs better than Ubuntu. So what if Ubuntu makes it easier to do nearly everything that you need to do? Isn’t this a good thing? Fo

Making Money (TLA)…

After displaying a Text Link Ads refferal button on TechyStuff, it finally payed off! Someone finally registered, and then installed the ad code on their site! In return, TLA sent me a check in the mail for $25! That’s right, for everyone refferal you earn, you are paid $25! Not only that, but you can also buy and sell links using TLA as well. Anyone that runs a web site should at least try them, I feel that there is a possibility of making large amounts of money using them!

All Knowing Peter…

Peter , what color shirt am I wearing?“-You “Blue“-Peter Imagine being able to ask a computer a question such as that, and then it being able to answer it for you! That is exactly what PeterAnswers.com does, sorta. You can go there now, and do what it says, and you won’t be too impressed. Actually, it is certain that you will receive an answer such as “I’m sorry, but I can’t help with this question,“. As it turns out, Peter doesn’t know everything. However, with a little practice, and a fairly large group of friends, some madness can result from it. In truth, it isn’t Peter answering the questions, but the person typing is. Instead of typing out “Peter, please answer the following question:” like it asks you, simply hit the period key (.). Instead of seeing the period, you will see a “P”. Now, lets pretend that the question “What is my shirt color?” was asked. So after hitting period,

Blood Guns…
2007-10-13 12:51:12
After a recent shooting at a school, it has once again caused people to talk of gun control. I oppose gun control because the right to bear arms was given to us for a reason. Contrary to popular belief, an armed population is necessary for the well-being of a society. Often, gun control actually causes increases in violence in crime. After all, when guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.     The II Amendment was written for a for a reason. It allows us, as civilians, to posses guns. Not only do guns allow you to defend yourself from criminals, but also from the government. The II Amendment was written to protect the general population from our own government. Unless a society can defend itself from its own government, that government has total control over its populace. “The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in their government,” -Thomas Jef

I then created my own widget, and if you would like to try the widget, install Opera, and then click here.

DVD Playback In One Easy Step
