Welcome to the First Featured Local Business!

Does this look fun or what?  Shanti Yoga Studio on Kings Hwy in Myrtle Beach offers a wide range of yoga classes for adults and kids.  The studio was just opened a couple of months ago and it has a great story. The studio is the dream of Dawn Yager and a core group of her yoga students, led by Mary Jeffcoat.  Dawn had been teaching out of Mary’s home and they decided she needed a place of her own (the only string was she had to continue her 6 a.m. class for them!).  This group raised all the money necessary and Shanti was born! “I thought it would be 10 years before I had a studio.  It took just 6 weeks!”  Dawn Yager They also host a Healer’s Circle on the first Friday of each month at 5 p.m.– open to anyone.  Bring a dish to share.  I attended this month, Romina Hoda presented a class on angels and it was amazing! Myrtle Beach is becoming an enlightened place to live!! Share This

A Big Wave to our First Featured Tourists!
2007-06-02 07:36:01
Marie and Ralph are from Islip, New York.  I love Long Islanders, they give New Yawkers a good name!  They not only visited Myrtle Beach, but purchased two homes in Arrowhead golf community.  While they won’t be moving here anytime soon (Ralph is too busy working on “The Donald’s” construction projects), one day they hope to call the Grand Strand home.   Congrats and come back y’all! Wave Travels!
2007-05-29 20:35:42
I could have used a much more stunning picture of Sedona, AZ, but this one tells the story.   I went for 72 hours of R & R to this land of energy (the first night there was a blackout which turned out to be fun, but that’s another story).  I’d been hearing from many friends that this place was serenity on earth.  So, I flew to Phoenix and made the 2 hour drive north to Sedona.  The red rocks tower like protective guards over the otherwise flat land– truly beautiful.  I stayed at the Sedona Rouge Resort (Alan is “THE” massage guy to see there).  I hiked everywhere (starting at 5 a.m.)– Slide Rock, Cathedral Rock, to the Chapel, some bridge that starts with an ‘m’.  Awesome, peaceful, people smiling all along the way.  Yet, along this tranquil journey in the desert, I noticed scars like this picture popping out everywhere.  This desert oasis is being developed at an eve

Drag ‘n Dogs
2007-05-04 06:20:01
Dressing in drag for a good cause!  The Grand Strand Humane Society held its annual Sweetie Pie Contest last week at Revolutions at Broadway at the Beach.  Reputable doctors, lawyers, and other professional men of Myrtle Beach let down their hair (literally) as they got pretty for charity.  The Britney Spears guy was my favorite, singing to “Oops, I Did it Again” while dropping his baby over and over.  There was a Loretta Lynn, biker chic, Chiquita Banana girl, and a fine-looking cheerleader among the beautiful contestants.  Each drag queen had to raise money to participate and we all pitched in by stuffing some in some difficult to reach areas.  Grand total was over $80,000!  Share This

Grand opening- Carolina Forest Community Center!
2007-05-02 12:12:21
Carolina Forest now has an official community center! I am proud to say my office, RE/MAX Palmetto Properties, was the sponsor of the event.  The kickoff carnival was held yesterday, complete with loads of inflatable rides and a dunk tank (the brave dunkees were a bit chilly!).  I was put on the levitating baseball game after a co-worker’s, Kristin, finger was smashed by an overeager 6-year-old.  There was a silent auction and food too.  All proceeds went to the Carolina Forest Community Center and Carolina Forest Community Church.  Over $7,000 was raised!  It was loads of fun for volunteers and the kids!  This was one of the top ten days I’ve had since we’ve lived here! said Lawson Blue-Smith The center operates a variety of sports activities for kids and adults who live anywhere around Myrtle Beach.  They host annual Turkey and Frostbite Bowls- yes, we need those even in SC!  Also, they have all day summer camps th

World’s First Hard Rock Theme Park Preview Today!
2007-04-27 11:31:59
Myrtle Beach is hopping with the highly anticipated unveiling of the plans for the world’s first Hard Rock Theme Park.  Groundbreaking for the 140-acre park was in July and construction has been underway on the site at the former Fantasy Harbour Tanger Outlet on 501.  The park is set to open in 2008, but come on, this is the south, it’s not going to happen on time.  I’ve had a front row seat (literally) to the action as I attend church at CUMC right in the parking lot of the future park and right next to Medieval Times.  Only in Myrtle Beach would amusement rides and religion co-exist peacefully.  There will be a Led Zeppelin- themed coaster which I think will be great to add a thrill ride before my son and I go to Sunday service. Today ’s Myrtle Beach Sun News details the band line up for today’s event.  The Beatle’s Magical Mystery Tour Bus is here which is something I’ve got to see!  A shindig of this magn

Belin United Methodist Church launched their summer kayaking event this week.  The group of beginners to advanced kayakers met at the Hot Fish Club landing.  First in the water was Friday (aptly named for Crusoe’s heroic dog in Treasure Island) the Scottie– he didn’t care whose boat he was in, he was ready! Drowning at the Bottom
2007-06-22 17:32:59
SC ranks at the very deep bottom for women in state legislatures.  This was one of the reasons for the Women and the Political Process conference that was held at the Center for Women in Charleston last week.  The event brought together about 100 women (I was the lone rep of Myrtle Beach) to answer the question, “What are we going to do about it?” The refreshing answer is: there are some kick butt women already doin’ something!  Inez Tenenbaum, an inspiring veteran of SC politics was the featured speaker.  A few other incredibly noteworthy women I had the privilege to hear were:  Toya Hampton Green, Charleston Cty. School Board, Colleen Condon, Charleston Cty. Council, and Thomasena Stokes-Marshall, Mt. Pleasant City Council.  From fundraising to public speaking, the conference informed us to what it really takes to run and win a campaign.  And, to encourage radical ideas for change, thanks to Phil Noble.  His presentation introduced me to the SC New Democrats– just

ATTRACTING YOUR DREAM HOME
2007-06-25 08:50:37
FIVE YEARS AGO, I HAD A DREAM.  I DREAMT OF A BRAND NEW THREE BEDROOM HOME IN A QUIET NEIGHBORHOOD WITH A POOL IN THE BACK YARD.  JUST FOR KICKS, I DREW A HOUSE, A RATHER DETAILED ONE, AND PLACED IN A PORCELAIN KEEP SAKE BOX IN MY BEDROOM.  I WOULD OCCASIONALLY REMEMBER THAT IT WAS THERE AND PEEK AT THE DRAWING.  FOR A WHILE, I FORGOT ABOUT IT.  LIFE MOVED ON.  I GOT CAUGHT UP IN ALL OF THE EVERY DAY CHALLENGES WE ALL FACE.  AFTER WE MADE OUR MOVE TO SOUTH CAROLINA TWO YEARS AGO, I UNPACKED THE BOX THAT HELD MY PORCELAIN BOX.  WHEN I LOOKED AT THE DRAWING, I WAS AMAZED TO DISCOVER WE HAD MOVED INTO THAT HOUSE.  WE OWNED A HOUSE BEFORE THIS, BUT NOW I WAS LIVING IN MY DREAM HOME.  OBVIOUSLY, YOU COULD SAY I KNEW WHAT I WANTED AND SIMPLY BOUGHT IT.  HOWEVER, WHAT I FOUND FASCINATING, WAS THAT NOT ONLY WAS THE BASIC HOUSE SIMILAR, BUT THE NUMBER OF WINDOWS, NUMBER OF PILLARS AND POSITIONING OF TREES WERE SIMILAR.  THESE ARE

The Secret to No Money Down
2007-07-03 16:42:24
What would you say if I told you it was possible to buy a home with no money out of your pocket?  It’s true!  There are many programs available that allow 100% financing on a home.  In addition, it is possible to get the seller of the home to pay your closing costs as part of your negotiations.  This could mean buying a home without using any of your hard earned money.  Sometimes it can make more sense to do this even if you have money available.  In some cases, I have advised clients to use their money to pay off high interest credit cards instead.  The rates on the credit cards were higher than the mortgage rate and the interest was not tax deductible on the cards.  It also helped to reduce their total monthly expenses which improved their cash flow.  In order to do this though, you need to consult with your Mortgage Professional as well as your Real Estate Agent.  If you do not have one, search no more!  I, as your Mortgage Consultant, will research what products

1,300 feet of fun at Myrtle Waves!
2007-07-02 17:05:05
Hi, I’m Lawson and my mom is Diana.  I’m going to be writing about the awesome things to do here for kids in Myrtle Beach!  I’m starting with Myrtle Waves , South Carolina’s largest water park! I’ve climbed 10 stories high and blazed down the curves of the Turbo Twister.  The wave pool has fierce waves but not as fierce as the beach (and no sand).  Get in front of the volcano as soon as you hear the bell at the Saturation Station and you’ll be drenched by 700 gallons of water!  It’s great!  And, when you feel tired, just sit down in an inner tube and the lazy river will get you going with the flow.  Myrtle Waves has 32 rides in all and they’re all fun! Whether you come to Myrtle Beach for vacation or you live here, go to Myrtle Waves– it’s a blast!  And, e-mail me how you liked it! Lawson Share This

Green Energy- No, Not the Hulk!
2007-07-09 17:51:58
Green Energy or environmentally-friendly electricity is available along the Grand Strand.  Santee Cooper is the first electric utility to offer green power in South Carolina.  Customers can sign up on Santee Cooper’s website and buy 100 kw hour blocks (about 10% of average monthly residential use).  And, it only adds $3/month to your electricity bill!  Purchasing 2 blocks of green energy benefits the environment as much as recycling 320 lbs. of aluminum! You can buy as much green energy as you’d like and each block is reinvested in renewable resources.  I have to say it, “Let’s be a superhero for our environment in Myrtle Beach.  Go green!” Share This

Fun on Broadway!!!
2007-07-13 08:48:11
Broadway at the Beach is one of my favorite places in Myrtle Beach! There are fun toy shops, sweet and sour candy at the candy store, great places to go shopping for clothes, and Ripley’s Aquarium is a great place to see mother nature’s wildlife. You get to see animals like snakes, fish, poison frogs, sharks, and sting rays. The restaurants are heavenly good!  I think the best are Yamato’s and Tripps.  Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville is really fun too! And, top if off with their fireworks display each night! Enjoy! If You Buy Now, You’ll Get a Big Screen TV and a Set of Ginsu Knives!
2007-07-16 19:50:29
While it is a Buyer’s Market in Myrtle Beach, prices are not taking a nose dive.  Two reasons:  1.  Our home appreciation didn’t sky rocket– appreciation has averaged in the teens and we’re still gosh darn affordable..really. 2.  I’ve noticed, everybody wants to live here.  Apparently, everybody but me has vacationed in Myrtle Beach for generations. So, the Market Wave for today is 5,479 homes are active on the MLS.  The median price for homes closed in the last 24 hrs is $207,300 (and it’s within 10 min. to the beach!). It is a great time to buy with all of this inventory and big builders like DR Horton and Centex offering tons of free upgrades and thousands of dollars off list price.  And, as always, you need a Buyer’s Agent (yep, like me) and, hey, it doesn’t cost you anything), to help you uncover the best bargains.    Share This

Cool Buy of the Week!
2007-07-23 19:59:32
This brand new 3 bed/2 bath town home with a fireplace is truly a bargain!  This is the last one the builder has and at an asking price of $175,000 it is an excellent investment.  It is located in a small, quiet neighborhood within the beautiful Burning Ridge golf community.  In the Carolina Forest area, town homes with a garage average in the low $200s!  The POAs are low too $183/month and include maintenance, water, pool, and cable. How to Raise Your Credit Score….and Keep it There!
2007-07-23 12:13:30
So you want to buy your first home or refinance the one you’re already in, but your credit score is less than stellar.  Here are some proven ways adapted from My FICO to give it a good boost:   1.  The most basic– pay your bills on time.  Satisfying a collection once it’s put on your record will not remove it!   2.  Keep balances below 50% of your credit limit.   3.  Don’t cancel your credit card accounts.  The more available credit you have that you’re not using, the better. 4.  Don’t open a lot of new accounts at once.   If you’re in the process of getting a mortgage, you’re pre-approval is based on your situation at that current time only.  If you open an account like getting a loan for a car, that can be a huge negative impact on your final mortgage approval.  Keep track of your own credit score at least annually by getting your FREE report (no gimmicks) at Annual

It sounded weird to have a camp, but it was worth it! Horry Country Parks and Rec organized the camp. The coaches were really nice and helpful. Sixty-five kids showed up Forestbrook Middle Schooland I was one of them. They coved a lot of moves. Here are some. The pick, triple threat postion, and the two types of defense– man to man or zone defence.  I learned a lot and made new friends.   It was great fun, and I will do it again next year! I Need a Miracle!  I’ve been craving to hear music other than the Top 40 crap, and I am (and always will be) a fan of the Grateful Dead.  Well, miracles happen. The 3rd Annual Jerry Fest rocked the Boathouse in Myrtle Beach! Hundreds of the faithful gathered yesterday for a full day of free music by Dead inspired bands The Biscuit’s, Pour No More, and Pluto.  The event was originally created as a birthday tribute to Jerry and is still sponsored by Wave 1041.1 and Loose Lucy’s. Vendors displaying hemp bags, tie dyes, paintings, and hand-crafted jewelry while the crowd sprawled out around the grass overlooking the Intracoastal Waterway.  Children and adults danced through the muggy afternoon on through sunset.  Listening to songs like “One More Saturday Night” and “Scarlet Begonias”, eating some satisfyingly greasy food, and enjoying the beautiful view, it was all smiles.  Rumor is the organizers are going for a

Is There a Hole in My Roof?
2007-08-09 18:52:56
Most issues with a home aren’t this obvious.  If you are in the market for a home or condo, should you have it inspected?  YES.  Whether it’s your best friend’s house whom you trust completely, a resale that’s 50 years old, or brand new construction.  YES! What does a home inspector inspect?  All major systems in the house including plumbing and a/c, structure of house, windows/doors, flooring, electrical, and, yes, even the crawlspace (ooohhhh..yuck).  Somebody has to be willing to do it, and it’s important to not have just any body.  Shane Boyd owner of Buckeye Home Inspections is a trained and licensed home inspector.  He has provided inspections for my clients and does a very thorough job.  And, will discuss his findings with the client. Inspection is a good idea for sellers too.  In this market, sellers need every advantage to make their home the most attractive to potential buyers.  Having a home inspection done prior to listing will let buyers know exactly

Myrtle Beach Market Wave
2007-08-15 20:52:20
Is Myrtle Beach the elusive pot of gold at the end of the rainbow?  Well…potentially. According to the figures on the Coastal Carolina Association of Realtors MLS, the median price in 2006 for a single-family 3 bedroom homes sold in Myrtle Beach was $129,000.  In 2007 the median price so far for homes sold is (drum roll please) a nicely appreciated $159,900.  Myrtle Beach was largely a secret in 2005’s frenzy, and we still remain undervalued for a coastal region.  Lots to do, low taxes, situated in between NY and FL, cheap homes, and oh yeah, the beach, the Grand Strand will be shining in the sun for a long time. What do you think of Myrtle Beach?  And, let me offer you a deep-fried pickle on your next visit.   Share This

Bubbles The Amazing Elephant
2007-08-17 17:07:29
Elephants in Myrtle Beach?  My mom sold a house on the Intracoastal Waterway and the new owners discovered they live on the same road as Preservation Station.  The Station is home to all kinds of animals– tigers, monkeys, and elephants who have been trained.  You may have seen them in movies like Dr.Doolittle and The Jungle Book. Bubbles is a marvelous elephant. I know why they call her Bubbles. It’s because she farts big time and loudly and it sounds like bubbles popping! There was a lady swimming with her. And when she got out she layed back and then I heard faaarrrttt. Then the lady that swam in there with her, hopped on her and the man who owned her took off down the street and went back to their home. I have never seen a elephant outside the zoo. It was very cool. Myrtle Beach Air Wave
2007-08-23 16:06:06
“We’re so cool we fly to lunch.” Yesterday, we hopped aboard a teeny-tiny 4–seater Cessna plane bound for lunch in Charleston.  Sarah Long, Leslie Moloney, and I were flown by “Captain” Chris Long.  Chris’s day job is building magnificent estate homes in the Grande Dunes with Omni Design-Build Group.  He completed his initial pilot training last year and said this was the longest trip he’d taken anyone on (I’m always happy to be a guinea pig, especially at 3500 feet above the earth).  So, we made it in a smooth 45 minutes to Charleston, caught a cab, and had a three-course tea service at Thoroughbred’s inside Charleston Place, the very famous swanky hotel in the heart of Charleston.  Seeing Myrtle Beach from the air gave me such an incredibe perspective– there are so many trees and so much land! Waterways meandering all along the Grand Strand..just beautiful to take it all in.  This p

It was the last weekend before school started, and I went to Family Kingdom with my friends Christopher, Molly, their mom, and my mom. It’s only $12 for locals!! There is more than 30 rides and a water park. I think the top 3 rides are the Hurricane, the Tilt-a-whirl, and the Pistolero laser ride. No Butt Beach
2007-08-29 09:05:02
Surfside Beach  recently passed a smoking ban.  Starting Oct. 1, there will be no smoking in restaurants, bars, piers, and even the beach.  This has some folks declaring what an unfair blow to the business owners.   I’m confused, Surfside Beach bills itself as THE Family Beach.  Families coming here from states that have already passed such legislation are going to be thrilled to spare their children’s and their own lungs.  If SC continues to pass legislation that puts the health of it’s residents and vacationers at the top of the list, more people will come spend their money here, not less. I have asthma.  I want to go out to eat.  I want to go dance at a bar.  I have more of a right to breathe than smokers have to smoke. What do you think?  Does someone’s right to kill him/herself take precedence over the rest of us enjoying clean air? Go Surfside Council, lead Myrtle Beach and the rest of SC to keep making

Going Once, Going Twice, Sold!
2007-09-22 16:02:26
I went to the Horry-Georgetown Home Builder’s Show yesterday.  The show runs through Sun, Sep. 22 at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center and features the latest oohs and aahs of local home-related service providers.  One of the most innovative products I noticed was spray on siding by Texcote– you select your color and spray it over hardiplank, stucco, wood, and never repaint for the life of your home.  Sounds like a time/money saver to me. Another service that caught my attention was Tranzon Auctions.  Tranzon conducts residential and commercial real estate auctions all over the U.S. and the Bahamas.  With the national market sure to continue hibernating through winter and even the Myrtle Beach market napping, it sounds appealing to have your home sold in less than 6 weeks from original listing.  That’s the premise, but not a promise.  For a fee, sellers can reserve the bottom price for which they’re willing to sell.

The latest appreciation stats from the Office of Federal Housing has Myrtle Beach nicely ranked at 16th out of 288 markets.  Myrtle Beach has 9.98% appreciation for the past year compared to top ranked Wenatchee, WA (where’s that?) at a lofty 23.54%.  Right below Myrtle Beach is 17th ranked Wilkes-Barre, PA.  I lived in WIlkes-Barre for a summer doing my grad internship at King’s College.  I had a great experience planning the orientation for incoming students, shopped at the best grocery store ever– Wegman’s, and ignorantly rafted on a tube down the toxic Susquehanna River.  We wondered why we didn’t see anybody else out, and when we returned glowing green from the experience, we understood why. So, my point?  I’m happy being 16th.  We get lots more sunshine here than WA and loads less pollution than coal country. Share This

Long Island Invades Myrtle Beach…Again!
2007-09-10 16:03:23
The Brabant’s of Stony Brook, NY enjoyed a two week vacation based out of a beach home in Garden City.  They scored their rental on Vacation Rental By Owner, got a great deal and a great house right on the beach.  And, the pool was a usual hangout with the rough riptides. The clan of grandma and grandpa, two sisters, one dad, one toddler, and a teething baby, ventured all over the Grand Strand.  They visited Broadway at the Beach  and, one of my favorite places, Waccatee Zoo .  My son and I chowed down a terrific lunch with them on Labor Day (which included authentic pasta salad).  And, because they asked me about the best local butcher (Myrtle Beach has A butcher?), I now know J & J’s Butcher Shop on Inlet Sq. Dr. in Murrell’s Inlet is THE place. See all of you on your next trip here! Share This

Real Good Real Estate Attorney
2007-09-06 10:59:12
Honest, ethical, caring.  Those words don’t generally apply to attorneys.  Well, Biddle Law Firm is different.  Marshall Biddle was born and raised in Conway and his family has been in real estate for over 150 years.  He offers legal services in many areas, including real estate. I’ve seen how he takes time with his clients, gets to know them even if only meeting them at the closing table.  He helps clients to understand the closing process and is there for them to help with any issues afterward.  With a great staff that includes paralegal Laurie Bumgardner (pictured), the office is just a nice one to work with.  Marshall is equally as dedicated to his volunteer activities which include Kid’s World at Carolina Forest Community Church and Waccamaw Youth Center. Bottom line:  It’s a law firm that serves clients well and treats clients like human beings.  And, that’s the best combination.   &n
