to support its Windows Live Book Search
Project. Microsofts answer to Google Book Search, announced in late 2004.
Microsoft has brought on board Kirtas Technologies, whose robotic scanners can scan at a rate of 2,400 pages per hour. Books scanned by the company would be available in mid-2007.
“We believe that searching and finding relevant book content will become an important and integral component to the search experience of Web users worldwide,” said Danielle Tiedt, General Manager of the Live Search Selection Team at Microsoft. “That’s why Microsoft has made the decision to enable this experience as a key part of our strategy to compete in this arena.”
Cornell University would be the latest addition to the Windows Live Book Search catalog. Librarians at the school would decide which books to scan, and oversee
What Happens to Your body if you stop smoking Right now? 2006-10-18 02:07:12 If you are a smoker and were to stop smoking right now, this is what apparently would happen to your body:
In 20 minutes your blood pressure will drop back down to normal.
In 8 hours the carbon monoxide (a toxic gas) levels in your blood stream will drop by half, and oxygen levels will return to normal.

In 72 hours your bronchial tubes will relax, and your energy levels will increase.

In three to nine months coughs, wheezing and breathing problems will dissipate as your lung capacity improves by 10%.

17 October 2006 - One Day in History 2006-10-17 23:24:06 Make your life history and join the nation…including a host of celebrities…in the biggest blog ever!
The heritage organisations behind the History
Matters - pass it on campaign*, including the National Trust and English Heritage, are urging everyone in the UK to take part in a mass blog recording how we lived on one single day - Tuesday, 17th October
2006. The aim is to create a massive electronic snapshot in words of everyday life at the beginning of the 21st century - to be stored in perpetuity as a social history archive. The date has been chosen deliberately as an ‘ordinary’ Tuesday of no particular national significance.
For most people, October 17th will be an ordinary day, filled with familiar tasks, surrounded by common sights and objects, and interspersed with encounters with familiar faces. In fact, an early 21st century day much like any other. People are encouraged to include in their diary-blogs how history impacted on them that day - whether it be Read more:One Day
Back from my first ever Microsoft Student Partner (MSP) Event! 2006-10-24 02:06:18 Hey everyone, as you know or may not know I’m now a UK MicrosoftStudentPartner
(MSP) 2006/2007 and well I’ve just arrived home from Reading (UK) after spending the past two days there for my first ever Microsoft Student Partner (MSP) Events.
And well what can I say, it was great, I met lots of new people, had lots of really interesting discussions and got a whole load of freebies which will definitely come in useful as a MSP!
So let me give you a quick overview of what I did, I arrived at Reading Sunday afternoon at around 13:00 and once I had checked in and had a wash I met up with some fellow MSP's, these MSP's being Grant Downeh, Ian MacGillivray, Paul Shemmell, Philip Stears and Will Perry. Once we had all had a drink we headed down to Reading Town Centre in the hope of getting some food, we eventually came to end up in the Slug and Lettuce at the Oracle, not too long after that did two other MSP's come and join us, these being Emma Guy and Matthew Bell.
Once we
Windows Live Messenger for Symbian S60 3rd Edition phones 2006-10-25 00:16:18 Earlier today I got word my friend Rob at A Welsh View that a Chinese company has made a Windows
Live Messenger
client for Symbian
S60 3rd Edition
phones (N80, N73, N93, etc) but that it wasn't known if this was an official release or not!
Well I found out after doing some research that MSN Mobile China is infact officially offering this free native Symbian 9.1 based client for Windows Live
messenger for Nokia S60 3rd Edition devices like Nokia N80, N93, 3250, E60, and even the older S60 2nd Ed devices like 6600.
However because it’s been released by MSN Mobile China you may not be able to connect to it unless you’re from China, though some people outside China have got it to work, so maybe it might be a good idea to give it a go by going through the following stages:
Go to this link- http://mclient.msn.com.cn/
In Step 1, choose the third option in the first drop down
In the second drop down, select your phone model
In Step 2, choose the second button which says PC Read more:Windows Live Messenger

Royale Noir: secret XP theme uncovered! 2006-10-30 00:29:13 During Royale
's development (the XP Media Center theme), the graphic artists also produced a black version of the skin, sans the overused "glass" effect. The result is an aesthetic black skin named "Royale Noir", it even works with Office 2003.
Since the skin was never released (or reached final adjustments) there are a few issues with it: some of the colors don't meet the overall "feel" (they're too purple-ish compared to the greys of the bitmaps) and the inactive titlebars are a little too dark.
You'll find it's been signed by Microsoft and doesn't require a custom UxTheme.dll in case there are any doubts as to its authenticity.
If you already have Royale installed, you'll need to remove it as both of these skins share the same name.
This skin has not been released to anyone outside Microsoft, until now.
So go ahead and download it if you want to stand out from the crowd!
Thanks goes to W3bbo who did an amazing job uncovering this mystery XP theme, hats off
Happy 4th Birthday, Windows XP Media Center Edition! 2006-10-29 12:35:06 While Windows
XP might be celebrating its 5th Birthday
, Windows XP Media CenterEdition
is celebrating its 4th Birthday today! It's been a long ride, but it all started on October 29, 2002 when HP started shipping their first Media Center
PC.
It launched with the help of this guy (pictured below) and sported features such as use of a single analog tuner and DVD recording only on high end machines (which you couldn't do from within the MCE UI). Price points on the very few machines offered with Media Center at the time ranged from $1300 to $2000. Single tuner, no HD anything, no widescreen anything, nothin.
Thanks goes to Chris Lanier for not letting us forget to say Happy
4th Birthday to Windows XP Media Center Edition, check out Chris’ Blog for a screenshot history of Windows Media Center which includes a screenshot of the upcoming Windows Vista Media Center release.
Happy 5th Birthday, Windows XP, We Love You! 2006-10-29 12:25:28 This week marks the fifth anniversary of the beloved Windows
XP operating system. And Travis Hudson from Gizmodo thinks in honor of this birthday, we should spread the love towards the often-hated Windows XP operating system. With Windows Vista on the horizon, it is important to look back at the life of Windows XP and commemorate it with a list of why we love that old workhorse of an operating system.
The Right Mouse Button
Sure, the competitor has been supporting the right mouse button for quite some time now, but they still neglect to include it in their packaged mice or touchpads on the laptops. XP has always supported the beloved right mouse button and always will. How else can you quickly steal images from the internet without the right mouse button?

Amnesty International Call to Bloggers to stand up for freedom! 2006-10-29 02:27:48 Amnesty International
has issued a "Call to Bloggers', asking them to get online and stand up for freedom of expression on the internet. The organisation says this is a critical time when fundamental rights - particularly freedom of expression and privacy - are under threat from governments that want to control what their citizens say, and what information they can access.
The call comes as the online world prepares to meet at the Internet Governance Forum (IGF, Athens 30/10 - 2/11) to discuss the future of the internet. Amnesty released a statement to the IGF today and is sending a delegation to ensure that human rights are not sidelined and remain at the heart of the forum's discussions.
Amnesty's International’s statement also coincides with an urgent appeal on behalf of a blogger in Iran who was detained this month. Kianoosh Sanjari was arrested earlier this month while reporting on clashes between security forces and supporters of Shi’a cleric Ayatollah Read more:Amnesty

Microsoft Windows Live Trademark Guidelines 2006-10-31 02:06:25 Has anybody read the MicrosoftWindows
Live TrademarkGuidelines
before?
I was just checking them again now after seeing a Windows Live graphics design logo by Emexci titled “Live is Good” which made me think about some trademark issues that may arise with Emexci’s Design Logo by referring to Windows Live as Live!
Overview
Follow these guidelines to ensure that you are referring to Windows Live correctly in all print and online communications.
Trademark Usage
Windows Live is a trademark. The official product name includes the trademark symbol (â„¢) as shown here:

Note: Do not include a registered trademark symbol (®) after Windows when it is part of the Windows Live name.
Â
Referencing the Product Name
Although Windows Live (without including Microsoft) is preferred, it is okay to use “Microsoft® Windows Liveâ„¢” on the first mention if it is necessary from a business perspective to do so.
