Alice status
2007-08-05 15:04:18
Well I’ve dillied and dallied, and have not finished Chapter 2 of Alice yet. I mostly spent my free time the past couple of days catching up on mailing lists and web sites that were updated while I was in Italy. There was supposed to be Wi-Fi access in our hotel room, but I couldn’t get it to work, nor communicate my problems with the staff, so I didn’t get any Internet access while I was away. However I didn’t have very much free time even if I had of had access. I did write a little of Alice Chapter 2 (about 250 words) while I was away though. Also a short part linking one scene to another in Alice Chapter 2, originally envisioned as being a sentence or two, has expanded into a scene all of its own. The good news is that the rest of the chapter is written and I should have more time tomorrow to work on this(and not be distracted by anything else). So Tuesday is looking good for the full chapter to be posted. As for Justine, the story has now expanded into a tr

Alice Chapter 2 Update
2007-08-09 14:37:43
It’s not that I’ve dillied and dallied I have worked on Alice chapter 2 for the past couple of days. But the short polish I felt the end needed grew into 700 words added to the chapter and the “bit in the middle” has yet to be written. However I will have more time over the week end to finish this chapter. Over all status of Alice is that I have just over 20,000 words written out of a projected 60,000 total. If you like this why not buy me a cup of coffee?

Another Little Bit of Alice posted
2007-08-11 18:24:12
I wanted to use the words “dillied and dallied” in this post, it’s supposed to be some sort of running joke, my “word for the week”, just as I used the phrase “faffing about” in the posts I wrote before going to Italy. But it’s hard to say that I dillied and dallied when I added over 650 words to Chapter 2 today, added to the over 700 words I added in the past five days, not to mention all the words I’ve deleted and rewritten, that’s a lot of writing by my standards. And the *!$% chapter still isn’t finished! How’s that for an insight into the authors’s mind? I just want to finish Chapter 2 and get on with a couple of cute little ideas that I have for Chapter 3. But I can’t work on Chapter 3 became I need to get chapter 2 finished first. I need to finish Chapter 2 first because I want to publish by story sequentially on my web site. I could, as I have done in the past when I wasn’t publishing my

Making a Living from Writing
2007-08-14 07:30:29
I have been a subscriber to Randy Ingermanson’s Advanced Fiction Writing E-zine for several years now and in the most recent issue he has published an article based on sales figures for books. In his article Randy points out (as I have discovered time and again over the past 20 odd years) most writers do not make a living from writing books. He also points out that the only way to make a living writing is to write books that you know you can market, and then to market them! This is the fundamental problem I have with my novel Alexandra, it does not fit into any easily definable market segment. There is too much talking (and thinking in the case of Kevin) for it to be a erotic novel. And there are too many sex scenes in it for it to be a main stream novel. For those of you who think there may be another fundamental reason that my novel did not sell - I know the book is good because since I posted it in full on my web site I get a steady stream(trickle) of e-mails and comments on m

Started to Work on Justine again
2007-08-18 10:29:19
Well I can honestly say that I dillied and dallied for the past couple of days. I did very little work on Chapter 2 of Alice. My reason/excuse is that my wife has been away on business for the past couple of days and what little free time I did get on my computer was spent on web site maintenance. I also got a bit bogged down doing research, in other words I started to surf, and finding loads of wonderful stuff about space technology, rather than focusing on getting the information I needed and getting the job finish in a reasonable period of time. When I did get back to writing I started to work on chapter two of Justine. Yes, I know I said that I said that I would leave Justine as it was going to be part of a trilogy rather than a stand alone Novel. But now I’ve changed my mind and I will be writing it as a stand alone novel. The ideas I had for the first two books that were going to be in the trilogy will work as a good back story for Justine. Her back story will be partially

I’m not the only one!
2007-08-26 06:57:24
I’ve just read this post from Rich Minx about her receiving her first Adsense cheque. She had been waiting since 2004 to accumulate the $100+ one needs before Google will write you a cheque(or does Google cut you a check). I’m still waiting for my first cheque/check, and yes I put my first Adsense adds up on a web site in 2004 as well. And yes I know that I should have been busy working on Chapter 2 of Alice, which I said over a month ago was nearly finished, insead of reading other people’s blogs. But hey I have added over 300 words to it this week, but I keep getting distracted by ideas for Justine. PS now you see why it took me five years to write Celia, my first novel!

I have added a new page that gives details of how to advertise on Declan Stanley ’s Literary Erotica. Since I joined the Blog Mastermind Program and started to implement strategies to build traffic, I have experienced a huge increase in traffic to this site, going from an average of 27.5 site visits per day to 482.5 visits per day in under 3 months, and I fully expect the same type of increase in the next few months. So book your advertising now before the prices go up.

Alice Chapter 2 Finished
2007-08-28 19:10:04
I have just posted the completed Chapter 2 of Alice. Only a month after I posted that it was nearly finished. With that in mind I won’t be predicting when chapter 3 will be posted!

15 Years apart
2007-09-03 06:24:01
No not my posts to my blogs, but my novels Alexandra and Justine. 15 years separate the two novels and yet the themes I explore in both are remarkably similar. They both deal with love, and finding true love, and knowing whether what you have is really true love. They both end in happy endings. And, yes, I know I am just a big, old, soft romantic. But I guess the concept of love is an important one to me. The main difference is that Justine will be more overtly explicitly erotic, with BDSM themes coming in chapter 3 and beyond. Of course I am in danger of doing the same thing with Justine as with Alexandra. With Alexandra I started out to write an explicit, erotic novel, but ended up with too much plot and not enough sex for the novel to be considered as mainstream erotica. But I guess this literary  streak runs deep within me and I feel the need to show my characters as real three dimensional people, who happen also to have sex with each other. Take Seducing a girl(the first chapter

There Is More To Being An Adult Than Sex
2007-09-22 05:43:50
When I use the word “Adult ” I use it differently than other people. Most people use the word “Adult” to refer to sexual areas of adulthood. But I use it to mean a person who is over the age of 18. For example: In a previous enterprise I was renting DVDs through a web site (a clone of NetFilx). I listed all the categories of DVDs that I was going to carry, action, adventure, romance etc. And I also put “Adult” as a category. Now these “Adult” DVDs were 18 certificate DVDs (there is no over 18 certificate in Ireland, movies either get a 18 certificate or they don’t get any certificate). These were movies like Basic Instinct and the “made for video soft porn” offerings. But my credit card company would not approve my merchant account because I was offering “Adult” products on my web site. I tried to explain that these were 18 certificate movies that can be found in even mainstream supermarkets, they wouldn&rsquo

My Guilty Little Secret
2007-09-20 05:58:35
I have not told very many people what I do for a living. Or more precisely what I want to do for a living. Because what I want to do is write Sci-Fi erotic romances. And while times are changing and Sci-Fi is now a legitimate literary genre and romance is considered a commercial career and even erotica is breaking into the main stream, when you put all three together all the old stereotypes come flooding out. Lets highlight some stereotypical reactions of the three genres: Sci-Fi Well Sci-Fi is for kids. Yes I know that there is a lot of adult Sci-Fi written, but there is still a large percentage of the general population that associates Sci-Fi with adolescent adventures. And of course there are quite a lot of adult Sci-Fi novels that are adventure stories, and I enjoy reading them. But for people who don’t you can still get some negative reactions when you say that you not only enjoy reading Sci-Fi, but that you write it as well. Romance Where do I start on this one. For an adul

A New Plan for Writing Success
2007-09-14 05:01:50
The good news is that my decision to spend most of my time this week writing fiction paid off big time. I have done an average of 1,400 words per day. The bad(?) news is that I have started a new novel. I have decided to write a commercial erotic romance. I have done my research and I think I know what the market wants, that is what the publishers are asking for. I know that I can write SF and Erotica and I am a bit of a soft romantic at heart, so I think I will enjoy writing SF erotic romances. Or more precisely writing the proposals for SF erotic romances, since I want to do this professionally I won’t be writing complete novels until I know that I can sell them. I will continue to write my own “literary erotica”, but I am not sure about the commercial variability of the stories that I “naturally” write. There is too much story for the erotic market and too much sex for the mainstream market, and anyway as we all know most writers do not make a living fr

Working Hard
2007-09-11 08:18:02
Having posted the other day about the need to post every day I find that I didn’t post anything yesterday. However the good news is that I have been working on my stories. The bad news is that real life work commitments  might make it difficult to post something interesting every day. I am not going to spam my own blog with “today I fed the cat” type of posts. My goal is to make some money from my writing and some money from my blog, as most writers and most bloggers don’t make a living from their writing/blogging I am hoping that the two combined will generate a living for myself. This week in what free time I have from my day job I am going to concentrate on writing fiction, thought I do have several half finished blog posts that I might finish so you might still get something interesting to read on my blog, as long as my blogging does not become too much of a distraction from my fiction writing.

Alice Chapter 3 Update
2007-09-07 10:01:24
For those of you waiting for chapter 3 of Alice to be written I have some good news. I have rearranged some of the action and taken a scene from chapter 4 and put it into chapter 3. This means that chapter 3 is now Just under 2,000 words long. With chapter One - Drink Me at 5,094 and Chapter 2 - In the Garden at 6,758 , that means that I am nearly one third of the way through Chapter 3. I am tempted to say that it feels like Chapter 3 is going to be shorter that the first two, but I thought that about Chapter 2 as well and but then I went and added over 1,000 words from the time I posted that it was nearly finished until I actually got it finished.

Today I set Justine Free
2007-09-06 10:09:51
Having “raped” Justine the last time I worked on Justine. I was a bit reluctant to work on it some more. But then I had an idea of how Justine meets her second major lover. And then I realised how she could heal her heart from her first love. Here is a fragment of the scene when she achieves “enlightenment”: “So he never loved me,” Justine. “I can’t say what he felt,” Master replies. Master and Justine are silent for a moment “So do you love me?” Justine Master sighed, “What is love?” —————- “Are you asking do I like you? do I need you? Do I desire you? Do I want set you free? Justine looks up, “Do you want to set me free?” Master smiles, “I can’t set you free. No person can set another free. Only you can set yourself free.” “He enslaved me.” “No one can enslave you, only you can make yourself a slave.” “I didn&rsq

Today I raped Justine
2007-09-05 05:42:59
OK not really. And for those new to my blog Justine is a character in a novel I am writing. But I feel as if I have hurt her. I wrote a scene a few days ago. It was an argument between Justine and her first lover. The scene is from a period in Justine’s life before the events in the novel Justine take place. So the scene will never see the light of day. It starts with Justine telling her lover “You don’t love me, you just love the things you do to me.” and ends with her lover tearing her apart emotionally and leaving her slumped on the ground crying her eyes out. There was no actually physical violence in the scene, but the emotional intensity cut straight to my own heart. Even though it is just a fictional exchange between fictional characters, and I am writing, actually creating the story, it still left me a little shaken. I haven’t written anything, fiction wise, for the past few days.

Post Every Day
2007-09-04 09:38:27
Every place that I look for advice on creating a successful blog gives the same piece of advice - post every day. Every source be it the Blog Mastermind Program, or another blog such as Ten Keyboards, or even an article in a traditional magazine repeats the same advice - post every day. It is something that I have not been doing. I am still trying to establish the discipline of writing every day. I go through periods where I do write every day, and I am always amazed at my productivity. But then I get distracted by “real life” and my discipline slips. I skip a day. I skip two days. Then I realise that I haven’t written anything for four or five days. As a novelist I sometimes think that my blog might be yet another distraction. But I know hat writing something every day is a useful discipline, whether I am writing fiction or blog posts. So now I am going to post every day. Hopefully I will find something useful and/or interesting to write every day. I don’t want

How-To Spam Your Own Blog
2007-10-02 06:58:20
The best laid plans of mice and men… Thursday, Friday and Saturday real life intervened in my plans for becoming mega rich by writing/blogging and I did not get any writing done. On Sunday when I did make time to write I worked on my novel and so I do not have any posts for this week written, or even half written. I needed to work on my fiction, if I don’t make the time to work on my novel it will take me five years to finish it. And as novelists only get paid once they have finished their novels (nobody buys a half finished work of fiction) I don’t think that I can wait five years before being paid. However as I consider my blog my day job as I am establishing myself as novelist I was worried that I have not posted anything to my blog for nearly a week. I was going to write a post about that fact that I do not have anything to post, when I realised that posting for the sake of having something to post was simply a form of self-spamming. I do not need to fill up my b

A Month of Slience
2007-11-02 05:50:52
It has been a month since my last blog post. (In fact I noticed this a few days ago but didn’t post this post until today so that it would be a full calender month between posts.) This was not a deliberate “silent month” to make a protest or some political point, it was just that I didn’t have anything to say. The first half of the month I was very busy working on a new novel “Terminal Singularity” - a SF Erotic Romance. I wrote 2 1/2 chapters plus an outline. As soon as I have the first 3 (and maybe the last) chapter I will begin to submit it to publishers and see if I can get a publishing deal. So there will be a bit of a delay on Justine and Alice. The second half of the month was spend preparing for, attending and recovering from an intensive 8 day NLP training course. That was 8 straight 12 hour days of mind boggling NLP training. I am going to concentrate on “Terminal Singularity” for this month and you will be the first to know whe

Writers Block Strikes (again)
2007-11-15 06:37:40
OK I have to admit that I have developed writers block again. I say again because this is a problem that I have had ever since I started to write. What happens is that I start to write. And I maintain production as long as I get to write every day. Even if I only manage a few minutes and type only a handful of words the next Day I can write some more. However sooner or later life intervenes and I don’t get to write for a day (or maybe 2 or 3 days). And then when I do get the time to write again, I can’t. I thought I had the problem solved with “free typing/writing” were one types, or writes, non stop for a set period of time. this seemed to be working well for me the past few months, but now I’ve done 11 days of free typing and produced not a single word of story for any of the novels I am working on. I know all about writers block. I have had 15 years of writers block from the time I finished Alexandra to the time I started Alice, so I know from personal

Writer’s Block Update
2007-11-23 14:08:07
Today I “only” did 309 words (So far, but it is late), so Holly Lisle’s How Beat Writer ’s Block (And Have FUN Writing From Now On) is not a miracle cure and requires continued work on my behalf. I didn’t expect that it would be. And don’t worry I am not about to spam my own blog with daily updates of how many words I have written.

HowTo Beat Writer’s Block
2007-11-22 05:23:07
Today I wrote 857 words. Yesterday day I Wrote 678 Words. And the day before I wrote 389 Words. And the reason is Holly Lisle’s How Beat Writer ’s Block (And Have FUN Writing From Now On). I had been looking at Holly Lisle’s site for a while now. I first came across it a few months ago and had been thinking of buying her Create A Plot Clinic but then got stuck with a bit of writers block. Now I find that Holly has produced a course to beat writer’s block and is bundling not just the Create A Plot Clinic but all her other “clinics” as well for half price. It was an offer I couldn’t refuse. And now not only have I started writing, but I also have reference books to help me improve what I write. Already I have gotten a few good tips that will help me improve my writing and I have only skimmed the books. Has the course “cured” my writer’s block for good? Well only time will tell. But if I do find myself blocked at some future date

Story Overload
2007-12-06 11:16:04
I blame you guys At least those who have commented and e-mailed me about Seducing a girl. About half of you seem to think that more will be seen of the girl on the couch and that she might play some further part in Justine’s and John’s story. This had not been my plan. She was supposed to have just a “walk on” part. She was never going to be seen again.(Look people, I didn’t even bother giving her a name.) But now that several people have mentioned that they would like to see more of her I can’t get ideas for her out of my head. There is also another “walk on” part for a girl towards the end of Justine, and now she has that part as well. She fits the part and now there is an extra thread running through the story’s universe, so it is all good. She also now has a name, “Julie”. Originally she was just going to be a sex object for Justine to use to play with John, and you don’t need a name for an object. Now you guy

Over the past 3 days I have been very distracted by my day job. So while I started the new year with good speed, I have hit the first speed bump. [...]

Yet another form of Writer’s Block?
2008-01-06 18:13:15
Having said in my last post “I will be writing and doing nothing else.” I find that I did. Well I did do lots of other things, but I also did do a lot of writing. Last week I averaged 490 words per day. For me that is very good going. However, while I celebrated the [...]

Another Form Of Writers Block

I just looked at the date on the files that I have for my new novel Terminal Singularity. The latest date is 11th Dec. It is now the 29th. That is 18 days without working on my novel. OK, you might say, given the dates involved(i.e. Christmas) I might be excused for not writing while [...]
