Do you believe in miracles? 2006-10-02 04:16:42 I can’t believe
it. I’m honestly in shock. How could the team that was 25-33 on June 7th possibly be in contention for the AL Central crown, let alone win the crown? To be honest, I'm not sure how they did it. The only reason that I can think of is summed up in one word: Toughness
The Twins had the toughness to fight through a season full of adversity. When most teams would have thrown in the towel, these Twins believed. They believed that they could do the impossible. They believed that a 12 1/2 game deficit was not too big of an obstacle. They believed that behind good hitting, defense and the occasional win by people not named Santana - they could go far.
Most people see adversity as something bad. These Twins saw adversity as something to survive. They see adversity as that thing that gives them the drive to win.
In a season that saw it’s ups and downs these Twins persevered. All of their hard work and teamwork came to fruition today when the Royals s Read more:miracles
It all comes down to this 2006-09-29 23:02:44 Take a deep breath… Relax… Make sure and enjoy this weekend. While the weather may not be warm in Minnesota, inside the Metrodome things will be heating up. We’ll be playing three games against the White Sox. Scoreboard watching will be rampant. With three games left, the Tigers and Twins are tied for the AL Central division lead.
It is very likely that most of the state will slip into a baseball induced state that has severe symptoms of nail-biting, nickname calling, random butt slapping and excessive use of cliches (one day at a time, playing for all the marbles, leave it all on the field, etc).
While it’s been great to watch the miracle (also known as 2006 Twins Baseball) for some reason I have a calm feeling about me. After all, how could I doubt the team that has proved people wrong for the last four months. Every “expert” projected the WhiteSox to win the division. When it was apparent that they would not repeat they called for Read more:comes
Carlos Silva is no good! 2006-09-28 18:02:10 ***News Flash***
CarlosSilva
is no good. Just when you think that he might be turning it around he somehow finds a way to get his butt kicked by the Kansas City Royals! When facing a team that has considerably less talent than the Rochester Red Wings, it is NEVER a good thing to work only 4 innings while giving up 6 hits and 5 runs (including two slama-lama-ding-dongs). Gross!
Take note Terry Ryan. The Twins first two pitchers have been determined for the ALDS. Make SURE that Silva never reaches the mound during that or any other series. I would much rather put Radke out on the mound than Silva with his not-so-sinking sinker.
Also, please please please Terry don’t pick up his option next year. Use the money you would be paying him to get a REAL pitcher. You know the kind who can win games every once in a while. The kind that doesn’t allow 6 runs a game…. every game.
In other news…. I just received my playoff tickets. I am cheep so i’ll be sitti

Mr. Toughguy Pierzinski alone thinking about the team and state that he alienated. Have fun this October AJ. You can watch the Twins on ESPN while you are sitting at home… by yourself!
And then there were 4 2006-09-26 15:52:02 Well, it’s official. This years version of the Minnesota Twins is in my opinion better than any other team in the history of the Twins. With as much adversity as they have gone through this year, it’s only fitting that a team comprised of mostly youthful untested guys comes through to become the best ever.
Some of you already disagree with me. What about 87 or 91??? My response… We don’t know how far this team will go. What we do know is that they already have 92 wins - more wins than the 87 team and they are approaching the 95 win mark that the 91 team had. If they do better than split their remaining games they can be considered the best.
At the beginning of the season prognosticators talked of second place in the AL Central with the Twins edging out the Indians in the final week. No one had thoughts of Tiger dominance or the suck that is the White Sox. The expectations were not high for this ballclub and I think that is part of the mystique. Low ex
Beat the O's! 2006-09-23 00:52:50 Here’s hoping that the Twins can start this series out on the right foot. With the Motor City Kitties within striking distance I am dreaming of a couple Twins wins and horrible play by the Kitties… For all of you Twins fans out there who are still hoping to make the playoffs… Shift your sights to Detroit. The WhiteSox are fish in a barell and we’re playing with dynomite!
Think about the next two weeks… Great baseball! Can’t you see it? We beat out the Tigers, secure homefield throughout the playoffs and beat up on the A’s. The Tigers travel to New York, pull of the upset with great pitching and they travel to Minnie for the ALCS. The Twins crush them with great defense, pitching and timely hitting.
The Twins make it to the World Series to face the Mets. We DOMINATE.
Now back to reality…. While those things might happen, I guess we’re forced to take it one day at a time. It’s rainy and gloomy tonight so I
AL Cy Young Watch 2006-09-20 07:05:55 Since 1956, the Cy Young has been awarded to deserving pitchers from both the American and National leagues. This award was the brainchild of then Commissioner of Baseball Ford Frick. He grew increasingly frustrated with little to no representation of pitcher in the annual MVP balloting. His remedy to his frustration was to create a new reward. I guess if you become Commissioner you get to do things like that.
Since it's introduction there has been constant debate and speculation over who will win, who should win and who was robbed of the award. While I know it's a little early to start speculating, I thought it about time to jump into the fray and officially kick-start the debate.
Every year there are many pitchers, both starters and relievers, who usually are considered. The award is given to the pitcher who gets the most votes. Each major league city gets one vote. This vote usually comes from a well known "baseball expert". I generally don't agree with the "exp
We're Comin' 2006-09-18 14:32:02 All they do is win ball games. This years version of the Minnesota Twins is different than the previous Central Division winners. The difference is determination. I’m not sure where the motivation for this comes from… Possibly the death of Kirrrrrrbbbbyyyy Puckett? Possibly to prove the critics wrong? Possibly to make up for their HORRIBLE April and May? Either way, it looks as if this is the Twins year. Even though there are three series left prior to the end of the year, it looks as if our team will make it to the playoffs.
Let’s review what has happened to the Twins thus far.
- We started the year with guys named Batista and Rondell. We finally parted ways with Batista in June. In the place of those guys are Nick Punto and Jason Bartlett. Both have done a great job filling in and Bartlett has secured his spot as our shortstop of the future. Punto has an amazing glove but I feel that he will be replaced next year and sent back to his “u Read more:Comin
Gift Wrapped 2006-09-16 18:27:47 Not every day is Christmas. Last night, Johan Santana wasn’t nearly in his 2006 Cy Young winning form, the Indians were able to jump on him early. Over 8 innings he gave up 4 runs on 7 hits. While most guys would kill for that kind of day in and day out performance, it looked as if he was going to get the loss (which by the way would be his first since before the All-Star break).
The top of the 9th would bring three pirhanas to the plate. Those batters were Jason Tyner, Luis Castillo and Nick Punto. Before we could correct Bert Blyleven’s pronounciation of their nickname the bases were loaded. The Twins were down 2 runs. The score would eventually be tied with Justin “33 for MVP” Morneau’s 124th RBI of the season.
The top of the 10th inning was pretty unimpressive. The Twins went down in order. Then it all started to unravel. The first batter in the bottom stroked a double off of the fence in center field. Through what I would like to Read more:Wrapped

Morneau wins MVP 2006-11-21 20:20:26 In a rather unexpected move today, Justin Morneau won the American League MVP award. He is the first Twin to win this award since Rod Carew did it in 1970. Of the 28 votes, Morneau received 15 of the first place votes.Â
In what must make Rob Neyer and all the Yankees fans nothing less than irritated, I believe that the sportswriters understood that this years MVP should not be awarded to Jeter just because he’s Jeter. There were many arguments why Jeter should win. Those in favor of him insisted that his high average and run totals were enough to put him at the top of the list. While Jeter’s numbers were great, his numbers and inability to use a glove made most of the voters lean towards Morneau. After all, the MVP award is NOT a lifetime achievement award. Just because Jeter is going to the Hall Of Fame doesn’t meant that he’s guaranteed three letters behind his name…. M. Not exactly encouraging 2006-12-31 00:16:29 It’s been a while since I updated my blog. To be honest, I’ve been spending most of my energy getting irritated by the Vikings. I could rant for hours about the Vikes but i’ll refrain for today.
I have been trying my best to understand why the Twins haven’t jumped (even slightly) into the mix. Although I hear that we are the “front runners for Sidney Ponson” (which even if we did sign him is far from filling Radke’s cleats) the Twins have done nothing outside of signing a few of our own guys. While all of this non-activity has been going on there have been many stories about free agency over the past few weeks since the signing period began. Most of them were only slightly interesting. Last night’s announcement that Barry Zito signed a 126-million dollar deal to cross the bridge from Oakland to San Fran was by far the MOST interesting (and upsetting) to me.
In a time where baseball salaries have been inflating quicker than that of

Joe Mauer… Minneapolis/St. Paul's most eligible bachelor 2007-02-12 17:35:38 As if the women of the greater Minneapolis
/St. Paul metro area didn’t need more reasons to fall in love with Joe Mauer
, they were given 33 million more. In a move that will keep St. Paul’s son in town for at least another 4 years, the Twins this weekend locked up Joe Mauer with a 4 year/33 Million dollar deal.
Joe will get 3.75 Million this year, 6.25 Million in 2008, 10.5Â Million in 2009 and 12.5 Million in 2010.Â
During the offseason the Twins had several goals. Their biggest goal was to sign Morneau, Mauer and Cuddyer to long term contracts. Morneau earlier this month signed a 1-year deal worth 4.25 Million dollars. This move was done primarily to avoid arbitration. The Twins will next attempt to sign Michael Cuddyer to a contract.
Joe’s signing should signal several things to Twins fans everywhere.
The Twins believe that Mauer is an integral part of their future. Everyone knows that he’s a hometown hero but the Twins believe that he can be Read more:eligible
Leeeewwww? 2007-02-25 20:25:08 We all know who will be roaming the outfield this April when the Twins head north from Fort Meyers, FL to the lovely confines of the H.H.H. Metrodome. Unless something tragic happens during spring training, we can expect Rondell White, Torii Hunter and Michael Cuddyer to be our main guys.
While it seems very likely that we should have some outfield stability this year, I am wondering how Gardy will man the bench. This year, unlike previous years, our question mark coming out of spring training will be the pitching staff. We have grown accustomed to having a very consistent pitching rotation and bullpen. In the past, we had the luxury of filling out the rest of our roster with guys that could fill in when needed.
In Joe Christensen's Star Tribune blog he stated that he believe that both Lew Ford and Jason Tyner will make the opening day roster. That is an interesting thought but one that I find to be somewhat unlikely for several reasons. When heading back to Minnesota Gar
Game 1: Not a bad way to start 2007-04-03 05:59:41 If I had to script an opening day game for the Twins, Santana would have gone 8 innings with 10 K’s and only 3 hits allowed. That didn’t happen but Santana was good enough to get the win tonight against the always confusing Baltimore Orioles.
Santana’s line (and ERA) won’t be as impressive as it could have been if the Twins hadn’t decided to put the O’s away during the bottom of the 6th inning. He ended the game with 6IP, 6k, 4R, 4ER and he scattered 7 hits.
In the category of “Things that never happen”, Torii Hunter got off to a GREAT start. He went 2-4 with a opposite field homerun and 2 RBI. Hunter is about as streaky a player as i’ve ever watched. Let’s hope that he’s learned something from Mauer and Morneau about hitting during the offseason. He’s at his best when he sprays the ball all around the field. He looked great tonight and he even tracked down a gapper in deep left center. It’s good to
Random Thoughts on Today’s Opener 2007-04-02 21:52:17 Â
The 2007 Major League Baseball season officially starts tonight. The Twins will kick off the season by opening at home against the Baltimore Orioles.Â
I’ve been trying my best not to get wrapped up in speculation prior to the season starting. Now that the season officially starts, I thought it time to fire up the old laptop and start writing about my favorite team.
A few things worry me about the 2007 team. First of all, i’m not sold (yet) on the starting pitching rotation. It’s been well documented that we have the best pitcher in baseball on our staff (in fact MLB might do well to rename the Cy Young award to pay homage to Johan Santana). I’m honestly worried about three starters on our team….. I’m worried about Ponson, Boof and scared to death by Silva.Â
I’ll start with Boof. He’s young and while he has some experience he certainly is not as dependable as I would like. I like what he does on the mound but I fear t Read more:Random

Game 3: Ortiz Cruises 2007-04-05 14:42:19 The biggest question mark coming into this season was surrounding the Twins ability to patch together a workable starting pitching rotation. All other pieces to the team seamed to be in tact. The rotation however was the one thing that almost every baseball “expert” predicted would be our downfall.
When spring training started one thing was a given. Johan Santana would be our opening day pitcher. The rest of the team however was nothing more than a roll of the dice. Names like Silva, Bonser, Ortiz
, Ponson and Garza to name a few were thrown around like ragdolls. Everyone had their opinion as to who should be #2-#5. While today’s rotation is certainly different than I expected (and to be honest hoped for), we do know one thing after the first three games this season. Our first three starters are set!
Monday night Johan had a so-so night and still was able to pull out the win. On Tuesday, Boof looked unhittable for most of the night. The only mistake he made was to Tej
In the category of creepy… 2007-04-08 01:00:11 One of the fun things about keeping up a blog is that I have the luxury of seeing how people found my website. Many people find my blog by searching google. There are several searches that occur over and over again. Today I had the displeasure of having someone find my blog by searching for “Joe Mauer’s St. Paul address”&hellip

Too Cold! 2007-04-07 18:39:16 Twins fans everywhere rejoiced last night when news came out about the postponement of yesterdays game. Why the excitement? Pushing Silva’s first start back (of course). Silva was skipped in the rotation to make room for Sidney Ponson.
Ponson will be facing off today against Javier Vasquez. I like this match up much more than Silva vs. the Pale Stockings.
The weather forcast for today is…. cold and windy. I’m not convince that the game will be played but if it is we’ll get a up close and personal view of our 1 million dollar man…. Go Twins!
****This just in…. Silva will start today’s game. Bummer*****
Game 6: Don’t blame Ponson 2007-04-10 21:29:33 The easiest and most obvious reaction to last nights loss against the Yankees is to blame Sidney Ponson for a poor pitching performance. If you looked only at the box score, Ponson would look horrible. How could you not be upset when you see numbers like:
8 runs, 10 hits, 3 walks, 2 strikeouts all in only 5.2. innings pitched.
Now, don’t get me wrong. I wish that he would have fared better. He didn’t do well but I think that his numbers were somewhat skewed (especially his runs and hits). During the first two innings he gave up 5 runs (3 runs could have been prevented and 3 of the hits were “gifts” from the Baseball Gods…). The bottom line is this: The Twins (as a team) came out flat last night. They made horrible mistakes on the basepaths. They made errors in the field. They didn’t hit Carl Pavano (who hasn’t won a game in over a year).
Many of the usual sports radio hosts around town are ripping Ponson and calling for G
Ponson gets the win! 2007-04-15 04:00:08 Sidney Ponson had one thing on his mind. He wanted to come back from a less than stellar performance in his last game and prove to the Twins and their fans that he’s worth the $1 million that we offered him out of Spring Training. Ponson came out of the gate and looked very shakey. He did not attack the plate and the result of that was two runs in the top of the second. After the second inning things changed. Ponson attacked the plate, pitched inside and made it a point to throw first pitch strikes.
Once Ponson got rolling so did the Twins. The offense strung together hits in the 3rd, 5th, 6th and 7th. The most impressive inning was the sixth when the Twins had 4 straight two out hits which put up three more runs that really put the game out of hand. Things started to get out of control in the 7th inning when the Twins scored another three runs. Luis Rodriguez went deep over the right field baggie and Jason Tyner (who has never hit a homerun) sent one off the ve
Hunter, Ortiz propel Twins to win 2007-04-18 14:34:18 Did you see last night’s game??? I tried my best to watch most of it but I started dozing off around the 5th inning… Stupid West Coast games!
Even though I did not see every out, I do have some observations.
Ramon Ortiz
will be a a decent pitcher this year for our Minnesota Twins
. Ortiz gives all of his success to Rick Anderson but even so, Ortiz has done a great job in his first three starts. He has great control of all of his pitches and he is controlling the plate with his hard in, slider away mentality.
Luis Rodriguez isn’t too bad in the field. Last night during the middle innings, he put out seven batters in a row. Most of these were routine grounders but he did make one spectacular play to send Ichiro to the bench after a screaming grounder. From his knees he threw out Ichiro. The crowd gave a collective “Oooooh and Ahhhhh” after the play.
Torii Hunter

Santana cruises and Cuddyer knocks in two 2007-04-20 19:44:53 Generally people believe that in order to win a baseball game you have to have sound fundamentals:Â Pitching, Hitting and Defense.Â
Last night the Twins put their own twist on that philosophy. Trailing 2-1 in the 7th inning the Twins put a 5-spot on the board against Jarrod Washburn. The inning started with three perfectly executed bunts. Jason Bartlett’s drag bunt put him on first. Then came Alexi Castilla’s infield bunt. Nick Punto finished the job by executing a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to 2nd and 3rd base. Hometown hero Joe Mauer was walked and Cuddy smoked the ball to the gap to score two runs.
By the end of the inning, Washburn was replaced and the Twins put up 5 on the Mariners.Â
At that point, Santana
was set up for the win. He was strong again last night where he pitched 7 innings giving up 2 runs on four hits while striking out 7. Typical night.

We’ve got a few problems! 2007-04-24 19:16:12 The Twins have struggled their way through 19 games this season. Their record is favorable but it seems as if every game has been difficult and inconsistency has certainly plagued the offense since the beginning of the year.
I am not about to write off the 2007 Twins or their offensive capabilities but there are a few alarming trends that I have seen.
We are very inconsistent against lefties. Gardy does his best to try to mix and match lineups that are favorable but it seems that no matter who we throw out there we’re only marginally successful. As a team we’re batting .231 against lefties (and that is skewed because of all-world Joe Mauer who kills any ball that comes his way). Several key players to our success last year have not picked it up. Guys like Punto, Bartlett and Castillo are really struggling against lefties. It is obvious to me over the last four games that we have been handcuffed against mediocre lefties. What will happen when we get a tough lefty to Read more:problems
Twins head to Florida after taking two from Detroit 2007-05-01 19:17:07 In a season where the Twins
have looked anything but consistent, they travel to St. Petersburg Florida
tonight to take on a very young and talented Devil Rays squad. Coming into the last series against the Tigers I had my doubts about this team… specifically our ability to score runs. The supposed weak spot of this team was their starting pitching rotation. While that seems to be shored up (Thanks Rick Anderson), we have been used to getting little production out of anyone not named Mauer, Cuddyer or Hunter. Having three guys produce in a lineup won’t allow you to win many games.
This all changed with a 1-0 extra innings victory over the Kansas City Royals. That momentum pushed us to win two out of three games against the Motor City Kitties. While we saw flashes of good team play the Twins will certainly try to continue their winning ways during the next week.

Chicks dig the long ball 2007-05-09 06:23:34 Congrats Justin Morneau! Today you made Ozzie Guillen and the rest of the pale stockings pay for their mistakes. A solo shot in the 2nd wouldn’t be enough for you. No…. You decided to go long in the bottom of the 10th for a game winning walk off homerun. Congrats Justin! Once again… You are the man.
I love how this all played out. Just tonight I was reading an article in the StarTribune about Justin and the extra time he is spending with hitting coach Joe Vavra to go through film of each at bat. It’s funny that on the same day that article talked about not hitting for power and a horrible average with runners in scoring position, Justin launched two out of the park
In other news… Torii Hunter is still in his contract year. He extended his career-high 22 game hitting streak while hitting a sharp single up the middle to tie the game in the 8th inning. Closed circuit to Terry Ryan. Sign this guy. While we all know that he’ll cost an arm Read more:Chicks
Pierzinski once again surrounded by controversy 2007-05-28 20:59:10 We should have known. The catcher who was once loved by Twins fans once again found himself surrounded by controversy during todays game against the Twins. Should we be surprised? A.J. is doing the same things that we used to love about him. Only now the fans generally boo him when he comes to the plate. I have heard the term, “Barry being Barry” used many times but I think that we should file todays incident in the “AJ being AJ” column.
During the game today, the White Sox briefly took the lead from the Twins and Santana. AJ hit what would be a inning-ending double play (6-4-3). One he passed first he turned and ran towards the dugout. At this point he ran right by AL MVP Justin Morneau. He appeared to step on Morneau’s foot. This in turn make Morneau’s usually stoic face….even more stoic. He glared at AJ all the way to the dugout.
The controversy would somehow get worse though when first base umpire, Greg Gibson, motion
The Minnesota Twins Play Dirty 2007-06-01 13:33:05 Today I read an interesting article by Chicago Sun Times staff reporter Joe Cowley. You can read the article here.
The premise of the article is this: The Twins
play dirty and are never called on it because they are the cute, loveable small market team from a fly-over state. As I read this article I couldn’t help but chuckle. Do the Chicago WhiteSox with all their arrogance really believe that the Twins play dirty??? Cowley uses the following examples as reasoning for why the Twins are a dirty team.
1. In the 9th inning, Nick Punto (who Cowley describes as Gizmo from the Gremlins), slides hard into second base. He suggests that Punto deliberately hits Tadahito Iguchi in the ribs.
2. Cowley references the hit that Torii Hunter put on WhiteSox catcher Jamie Burke a few years back.
That’s it folks. He uses those two instances as evidence that the Twins are dirty. He also goes on to say that because the WhiteSox are the bad “big-market” team Read more:Minnesota
