Five Car Insurance Mistakes You Should Avoid
2007-07-02 23:06:00
Recently Five for the Money took a look at some of the biggest mistakes consumers make when buying life insurance. This week we'll tackle car insurance. Auto insurance isn't as fraught a subject as life insurance; buying a sensible policy doesn't need to be a reminder of inevitable death. But that doesn't mean it's easy to negotiate. Having the wrong car insurance, or making the wrong claims, can put a serious ding in someone's financial health. As with life insurance, some of the rules are straightforward: shop around to ensure a fair deal and review your policy annually to make sure that it still fits your life and financial condition. Here are a few other common mistakes policyholders should swerve away from:1. Don't assume the insurance salesman is your friend. The best insurance policies for consumers aren't necessarily the ones that bring in the best numbers and bonuses for salespeople, says Andrew Tignanelli, president of Luthersville (Md.)-based money management outfit Fi

Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster: The supreme safety
2007-07-02 22:10:00
Carbon fibre is a life-saving material. This was demonstrated most recently in dramatic fashion at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal on June 10 of this year, when one of the drivers suffered a horrific accident.Despite hurtling into a solid concrete wall at over 250 km/h, the driver survived the crash in his race car made from carbon-fibre composites virtually unscathed. Mercedes -Benz harnesses the safety benefits offered by carbon-fibre materials for the body of the new SLR McLaren Roadster , and builds its open-top super-sports car almost entirely from this exotic material as standard. Consequently, the new high-performance roadster not only serves up an exclusive open-air feast for the senses, it also offers a standard of safety that is unparalleled in this segment.Formula One regulations have demanded that the racing cars be constructed from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastics (CFRP) for some years now. The first chassis made exclusively of carbon fibre was used by McLaren in 1981, a

Kimi Raikkonen wins the Magny-Cours Grand Prix
2007-07-02 02:40:00
Kimi Raikkonen, Felipe Massa and Ferrari routed McLaren in Magny-Cours in Sunday’s French Grand Prix, finishing more than half a minute ahead of Lewis Hamilton’s McLaren. The red cars opted for a two-stop strategy, Hamilton for three, but once the Englishman lagged off the dirty side of the grid at the start it was all over. Massa out-dragged him to the first corner, and so did Raikkonen. The Brazilian then led until his second stop, but a heavier fuel load allowed his Finnish team mate to run crucially longer and he emerged from his own stop three laps later with a lead he preserved to the end. It was his second victory of the season.Further back Robert Kubica and Nick Heidfeld grabbed another nine points for BMW Sauber with fourth and fifth places, the latter having some gripping duels with McLaren’s Fernando Alonso. The world champion, who started tenth after his qualifying woes, was out of luck, finishing seventh (after a long second stop) behind Giancarlo Fisichella’s hard-d

First Drive: 2008 BMW M3
2007-07-08 23:46:00
From the moment you prod its starter button, the 2008 BMW M3 surprises you. Its 4.0-liter V8 is quiet — possibly too quiet — and settles to a lazy, subdued burble. It's obviously a very different kind of engine than the inline-6 that powered the old M3, and for a moment you wonder if the gang at BMW M have botched up the world's finest high-performance coupe. But then you find a clear stretch of road and depress the accelerator. The big V8 takes a giant gulp of air and the 2008 BMW M3 starts to come alive. At first you'll find yourself instinctively changing up a gear at 6,500 rpm, but then the engine's only starting to get into its stride. You find patience and let it rip all the way to 8,400 rpm, when you've got 420 horsepower in full cry.Now you realize that BMW's in-house performance shop got it right. Big-time right. The 2008 BMW M3 is more than you expect.A Porsche 911 With Four DoorsConsider this. The benchmark car for the new 2008 BMW M3 has not been the Audi RS4 or Me

Wet-Weather Driving Tips
2007-07-08 23:33:00
The combination of rain, fog, and early darkness in winter causes thousands of car accidents every year. Here are a few commonsense driving tips that can help you avoid wet-weather accidents.Drive slowlyThe most important thing you can do to prevent an accident on a slick roadway is to slow down. When you drive slowly, a greater amount of your tire's tread will be on the road, resulting in better traction. It will also keep you from driving through hidden puddles at a high speed, which can splash water into your car's engine, causing it to stall.Try to drive at a steady pace and avoid jerky movements when braking, accelerating, or turning. And avoid passing other cars, especially at night.Keep a safe distance from the car in front of youIt takes up to three times longer to stop on wet roads. This is true even if your tires are good-quality wet-weather tires. So don't tailgate, and be alert for brake lights on the car in front of you. You should also put on your headlights so that ot

What Your Auto Insurer Knows About You
2007-07-08 23:32:00
When you apply for an insurance policy or submit a claim, you're probably unaware of the streams of information about you that flow to your insurance company, private businesses, and your previous insurer. Mark Twain once wrote that insurance companies are a "power behind the throne that [is] more powerful than the throne itself," but that was more than 100 years ago. Today, the true power lies in the hands of the database companies that make their money by selling information about you.Scoring your financesWhat the insurance industry calls "credit scores" are actually "insurance risk scores." Both scores are based on information contained in your full credit report, but they put weight on different factors in order to calculate a final score. Thus, even if you purchase your credit score from one of the major credit-reporting agencies, you still don't know your "insurance risk score," which is not available to you.According to Craig Watts of Fair, Isaac & Co., a provider of scores, a

Will Your Auto Insurance Come into Play If Your Child Gets into an Accident When Delivering Pizza?
2007-07-08 23:29:00
Here's a PIZZADVICE for you about car insurance. If your child plans to use the family car on his or her part-time pizza delivery job, you'll need to check with your auto insurance provider to see if you'd be covered if your loved one were to get into a fender-bender in the line of duty. Insurance trade group officer Don Griffin is among the industry executives who would urge you to find out the answer to that before you hand over the keys to your teenager."If your child is delivering pizza as part of his part-time job and is driving your car for business then it's your personal auto insurance policy that's on the hook if there's an accident or some other incident that could result in a claim being filed," according to Don Griffin, vice president of personal lines for the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America, in Des Plaines, Ill.Griffin's advice? Your Car Has Been Stolen? Insurance Companies Offer Advice

In the unfortunate event that your car gets stolen, there is sage insurance advice being offered by Carolyn Gorman, vice president of the Insurance Information Institute (III), a nonprofit insurance information organization in New York, and Sam Sorich, president of the Association of California Insurance Companies (ACIC).Gorman calls on drivers to be prepared in the event their car gets stolen. She suggests that "you'll have already taken proper steps to ensure you have suitable insurance as well as having obtained the information you'll need to contact the police department for filing reports and for notifying your insurance company to begin the claims process.""Many consumers who shop for the lowest auto insurance rates fail to consider some inexpensive options that can save them a lot of money down the road," reveals Gorman, citing replacement rental car coverage as an example, pointing out that it costs "only a couple dollars a month." Your Auto Insurer Knows Plenty about You
2007-07-08 23:26:00
Your auto insurance company probably has a lot of your personal information, and that`s not necessarily a bad thing. For instance, auto insurers get a hold of your driving record, credit history, and other info to use in making decisions such as whether to cover your vehicles and how much to charge you for coverage. Many insurers use credit information to determine your insurance risk score. You`ll likely pay less for car insurance if you have a good credit score, a history of paying bills on time and no bad debt. Insurers see a direct relationship between your insurance risk score and the chances of you filing a claim. Conversely, an insurance applicant who has a history of being late on bill payments and who often opens and closes savings or credit accounts wouldn`t be as good an insurance risk. You won`t be able to obtain your insurance risk score, but you can assume that it`s comparable to your credit score.Providing insights on credit scoring/rating are insurance industry experts Ca

Insuring Your Home-Based Business Car
2007-07-08 23:25:00
To buy commercial or personal car insurance coverage for your car: That is the question…asked by most home-based business owners when considering what kind of car insurance to purchase for their car. As luck would have it, most business owners have enough coverage under their personal auto insurance policy to protect their investment; however, that is not always the case for all home-based business owners!“As long as you’re not driving other people around a lot of the time, you're probably fine with a personal auto insurance policy,” says Ed Charlesbois of The Travelers. “For instance, if you operate a delivery service out of your home, you're going to need a commercial car insurance policy that will cover your business assets in the event you're involved in a car accident. However, if you're a real estate broker and you drive clients around from time to time, you can get away with having just a personal auto insurance policy.”Auto Insurance Costs For Your Home-Based Bu

Car Accidents Happen Closer To Home Than You May Think
2007-07-08 23:21:00
Where you live is an element that insurance companies use in the process of setting up your insurance rates. Auto insurance companies often look at how often car accidents and theft occur close to your home when determining your car insurance rates.Progressive asked 11,000 of its auto insurance policyholders who reported accidents in 2001 how close to home they were when the accident happened. Fifty-two percent reported they were five miles or less from home, and an astounding 77 percent reported they were within 15 miles of home!Typically, if you live in an accident-prone area, insurers will assume your risk is higher because most people do their driving near home.Where Accidents Occur MostMiles from home Percentage of accidents 1 mile or less 23% 2 to 5 miles 29% 6 to 10 miles 17%11 to 15 miles 8% 16 to 20 miles 6% More than 20 miles 17% In addition:Accidents were more than twice

Children and Auto Accidents - Are seat belts to blame?
2007-07-08 23:20:00
“Nearly 500 children between the ages of five and nine are killed each year in auto accidents, and over 100,000 are injured due to improper seat belt use,” says Judith Lee Stone, president for Advocates for Highway Safety.StatisticsStatistics from the Advocates for Highway Safety, a nonprofit highway safety group, and the Child Passenger Safety Study, a joint venture among State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Co., the Children 's Hospital of Philadelphia, and the University of Pennsylvania, show that children under the age of 10 are most susceptible to injury in car accidents because they are wearing adult seat belts when they should in fact still be in child safety seats. The Child Passenger Safety Study found that more than 80% of children between the ages of four and eight are properly restrained. However, 40% of children between the ages of one and two and 20% of children between the ages of nine and 15 are not properly restrained. “With these kinds of statistics, something

Know the Warning Signs Before You Buy a Flood Damaged Car
2007-07-08 23:17:00
Hurricanes Katrina and Rita caused devastating damage to many residents' vehicles throughout New Orleans and Mississippi. In fact, the Insurance Information Institute estimates over 500,000 cars were damaged by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005. For many, this meant their cars were unsalvageable and were declared a total loss by their auto insurance company.Once a vehicle is declared a total loss by an auto insurance company, the insurance company will reimburse the owner for the current value of their car, take possession of the car and sell it to a scrap yard to be broken down for parts or demolished. In addition, flood damaged cars receive a special flood damaged title to warn potential buyers of the damage to the car. With that being said, you should never have to worry about buying a flood damaged car, right? Wrong!Beware of Scam ArtistsSome car owners may not have auto insurance coverage to protect their car from the damage of a flood or may try and sell the cars for cash inst

Are Men Better Drivers than Women?
2007-07-08 23:16:00
Argue all you want; however you'd be hard-pressed to find documented proof that men are superior to women as drivers. But make no mistake – gender certainly does impact driving habits and insurance industry observers believe that issue manifests in other ways, too. That's a point driven home by insurance executives such as David Snyder, who acknowledges that most car insurance companies take into account a driver's gender in determining policy pricing."The weight in pricing varies from company to company and by claims experience over time, but, for example, with all other factors being equal, a female between the ages of 18 and 25 would pay less than her male counterpart because as a rule younger women drivers have fewer accidents and moving violations than males in the same age group,” says Snyder, vice president and assistant general counsel of the American Insurance Association, in Washington, D.C.The only time gender has a bearing on car insurance rates involves young driver

Acts of Nature Could Cost You If You Rent a Car

It "Hertz" to tell you this, but major car rental companies like America's largest are passing along the costs of repairing vehicles damaged by "acts of nature or God." Guess again if you think Hertz is inventing the wheel with its policy or traveling a different path than its competitors on this matter. "This is not new for us," points out Richard Broome, Hertz vice president of corporate affairs, in Park Ridge, N.J. "That provision has been in our general contract for about the past year," Broome noted. "Our competitors such as Enterprise have been doing this for quite some time, and now we're implementing this for all our other customers as well," said Broome.Insurance industry executives Dan Kummer and Janine Gibford weigh in with practical coverage advice. For starters, Kummer issued a cautionary message on the subject of major car rental companies that have changed their contracts to discontinue coverage of damage to vehicles caused by "acts of nature or God" such as earthquake
