2008 Chrysler Sebring convertible cars
2007-06-18 20:57:00
Chrysler showed off its 2008 Sebring convertible in L.A., joining the folding hardtop parade but adding its own interesting twist. The car will be available with a choice of three tops: folding hardtop, cloth, and vinyl. All three tops will actually use the same stowing mechanism; instead of engineering a traditional soft top in addition to the hardtop, the supplier of the top, Karmann, simply skins the same three-piece frame as the hardtop uses in cloth or vinyl for those tops. So instead of saving trunk space with a more compact folding soft top, all three tops take equal-sized bites of the trunk space. Like all folding hardtops, it is a big bite, but Chrysler is quite proud that the Sebring can still stow two golf bags with the top folded away. The vinyl top comes only in black, while cloth tops can be had in three colors and the hardtop is available in all eight body colors. Vinyl, cloth, and hardtops all come with glass rear windows; all are one-touch open, with no manual latches o

Audi wins 24 Hours of Le Mans for fourth straight year
2007-06-18 20:44:00
LE MANS, France -- Audi won the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the fourth straight year, overcoming the challenge of two Peugeot cars and wet conditions Sunday in the world's most famous endurance race.Frank Biela and Marco Werner of Germany and Emanuele Pirro of Italy drove diesel-powered Audi No. 1 to victory, taking the lead in the morning after Dindo Capello's Audi No. 2 crashed out. Fifty-four cars started the 75th edition of Le Mans, and 25 failed to finish."We had nine stressful hours with the Peugeot right behind us," Pirro said. "But the more you suffer, the greater the pleasure."Audi No. 1 completed 369 laps in 24 hours and was 10 laps ahead of Peugeot No. 8, which was driven by Sebastien Bourdais, Stephane Sarrazin and Pedro Lamy. On the last lap, Bourdais slowed to wait for Audi No. 1 to cross the finish line together.Emmanuel Collard's Pescarolo Judd No. 16 finished third, 12 laps behind Werner.Peugeot No. 7 -- driven by Marc Gene, Nicolas Minassian and Jacques Villeneuve -- h

Hamilton holds off Alonso for Indy victory
2007-06-18 20:36:00
Lewis Hamilton secured his second straight Grand Prix win this afternoon at Indianapolis as he took the chequered flag 1.5 seconds ahead of McLaren Mercedes team-mate Fernando Alonso in what was a tight and tense 73-lap US Grand Prix. Hamilton started the event from Pole Position and resisted a challenge from Alonso into turn one. Alonso shadowed Hamilton until the first round of pit stops aiming to get the jump but the order remained consistent with rarely over a second separating the two. Coming up to lap Tonio Liuzzi at just over half distance, Alonso was able to get a great run on Hamilton down the long straight but Hamilton calmly moved to his right and held his line into turn one. Alonso was on a short middle stint at this time and did seem to have better pace than Hamilton, but simply could not find a way by. "What a dream!" Hamilton said. "To come to these two races and win first time out twice is just amazing. But this is really due to the quality of the team back in Europe an

2007 Volkswagen Touareg V-6 - Comparison Tests
2007-06-24 20:03:00
Soon after VW’s Touareg was introduced, a V-8 version finished first among eight SUVs in a 2003 comparo and then landed on our list of 5Best Trucks. By the end of 2003, however, that same Touareg wound up dead last in a four-SUV comparo. And by the spring of 2005, a V-6 Touareg — then making 237 horses — finished only fourth of six utes. For 2007, the V-6 has been replaced with one that produces an extra 39 ponies, but it’s still not enough to pluck this bland 5203-pound Vee-Dub — built in Bratislava, Slovakia, of all places — out of the doldrums.Right off the bat, our Touareg lost points for requiring the longest braking distance of this pack; for an engine whose raspiness was noticed as early as 3000 rpm; for a transmission that whined whenever the vehicle was coasting; and for wipers that, uh, didn’t. Back-seat room — with either two or three persons — was the slimmest in this contest. What’s more, the proximity sensors were almost immediately defeated by snow an

2007 Volvo XC90 Sport - Comparison Tests
2007-06-24 20:01:00
We’re drawn to Volvo’s SUV because it’s not a traditional SUV. More like a big box of Swedish rye crisp on stilts. The XC90’s V-8, built by Yamaha, produces 325 pound-feet of torque, the most in this group, and proved the perfect partner between 50 and 70 mph, where most passing is undertaken. Still, this V-8, like the Land Rover’s, evinced the sort of thrashiness that is mutually exclusive to anything attached to a $50,000 sticker.Speaking of which, this Volvo sported a paucity of features and amenities and never felt luxurious, although our test sample did arrive with the optional $595 blind-spot warning system, which clogged with ice and was thereafter useless. The XC90 also took abuse for its vague steering, a driver’s seat that couldn’t be lowered far enough, and a back seat that forced the center rider to straddle the transmission hump while resting his boots atop the front seats’ enormous inner rails. What also hurt the Volvo was its behavior in snow, where a lack

2007 Lexus GX470 - Comparison Tests
2007-06-24 19:57:00
Highs: Solid platform, fearless off-road, full-luxo interior.Lows: Scattershot switchgear, still not enough power, undisciplined body motions. The Verdict: Still the luxury SUV for body-on-frame purists, but it's feeling a little old.It used to be that “real” SUVs featured body-on-frame construction and a live rear axle — the purists’ mandate for serious towing and dirty off-roading. In this group, only the Lexus would satisfy those guys, but it’ll satisfy the crossover cultists, too, because the GX470 never feels truckish. In fact, it delivered a ride almost as plush as the Acura’s and BMW’s, with plenty of suspension travel for even the worst two-tracks. It was the Lexus that floated over a snow-camouflaged culvert that just about jammed the Volvo driver’s skull into the headliner. And despite this SUV’s creeping age, the interior remains as plush as any, with Bentley-quality leather seats, genuine bird’s-eye-maple trim, and a tilting-and-telescoping wheel slathere

2009 Lexus LF-A - Car News
2007-06-24 19:49:00
Enough teasing already. Lexus is the luxury division of arguably the most cautious carmaker on the planet, but even by Toyota’s painstaking standards we are getting impatient for the official green light on the Lexus LF-A supercar that was caught testing, yet again, in these pictures. We first got excited about a Japanese exotic with the debut of the LF-A concept at the 2005 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Lexus showed a supercar with a front/mid-mounted 5.0-liter V-10 designed to exceed 500 horsepower to tell the world it was serious about adding a performance variant. At the time, Lexus officials stirred the pot, saying a hybrid-electric powertrain also was a possibility. But the LF-A was designed as a pure concept car, is how Bob Carter, Lexus Group vice-president and general manager, described the exercise that generated the kind of explosive reaction that prompted engineers to keep working on it, sanctioned or not.Meanwhile, the design studios were preoccupied w

2007 FERRARI DINO CONCEPT DESIGN BY UGUR SAHIN
2007-06-24 19:39:00
Ferrari Dino Concept design is the modernized version of the successful Ferrari Dino produced by Ferrari. The goal was to create a car that feels stylish, modern, dynamic and organic while staying true to the original design language of the Ferrari Dino and Ferrari brand in general. The main characteristic of the Dino Concept design is the way it looks similar to the original Dino. With very round styling elements around the wheelbases and its cockpit, it looks retro and modern at the same time. With the right proportions combined, the car looks very dynamic and stylish. It stays true to its original with the design of the rear and the front being rounded and avoiding the hard edges as much as possible. Also the rear window opening is a striking feature originating from the original Ferrari Dino. The air intakes scoops however are very different compared to the original Dino, they look very organic and visually add a very organic feel to the car.

All new Ferrari F430 Spy Photos
2007-06-22 10:41:00
Ferrari has started the development of the all important mid-engined F430 model successor. First test mules are based on the, yet to be released, F430 Challenge Stradale and have now started to rack up test kilometres on the Fiorano test track as well as the winding mountain roads around the Maranello headquarters.According to the spy photographer, he managed to get shots of the fully finalized model! Unfortunately, it is hidden under a red cover spotted from a long distance and he was not able to get a shot with it off. Nevertheless, this image gives evidence that the work is much more advanced than previously thought, and the eagerly awaited new model could debut before the end of 2008.For some time, it was speculated that Ferrari would opt for a V10 engine in order to match the Lamborghini Gallardo. However, since Formula 1 regulations went back to using V8's, Ferrari decided to stay with the proven configuration for the F430 successor. Some of our sources from within the Ferrari f

Alfa Unveils 159 Turismo Internazionale (UK)
2007-06-25 21:44:00
Only a small number of Alfa Romeos have ever carried the famous two-letter designation, TI. Now it’s the turn of the Alfa 159 saloon and Sportwagon to carry the famous TI initials. Short for Turismo Internazionale, the TI badge now appears on several versions. The range-enhancing Alfa 159 TI line-up benefits from a unique body kit, lowered sports suspension, 19-inch alloy wheels, red Brembo brake callipers all-round, plus chrome effect door mirrors and exhaust.Inside these TI models, electrically adjustable and heated leather front sports seats top the list of interior changes, along with new sports dials, aluminium sports pedals, kick plates and trim inserts. A leather-clad sports steering wheel and gear knob are also included in the sporty specification list.Drivers can choose from three powerful yet flexible engines. Audi RS6 Uncovered Spy Photos
2007-06-25 21:41:00
New prototypes for the Audi RS6 have been spotted in Germany, this time basically undisguised. Now that the car is free from the annoying black-and-white checkered camouflage, the extent of the changes over the Audi S6 are now clearly visible. The LED light strips on the S6’s front bumper have been removed on this RS6. New front air-intakes are larger, and they wrap around the front bumper allowing for some integrated brake cooling ducts up front. The front intakes are highlighted by low flares which continue along the side, between the wheels, making for a more aggressive stance. The rear bumper has been reworked significantly. Large single exhaust pipes replace the S6’s dual-tip design, and an aggressive rear diffuser dominates the rear bumper. Visual differences aside, the real story is in the RS6’s performance potential. Sources predict the addition of a turbocharger to the S6’s 5.2-liter V10 engine, which should generate something between 550 and 600 horsepower. Given this

SPY PHOTOS: More Ferrari F430 Challenge Stradale
2007-07-04 19:53:00
Text by Hans G. Lehmann Copyright Lehmann Photo Syndication edited May 3, 2007Biting dustHere are latest photos of the upcoming Ferrari F 430 Challenge Stradale . They were taken in the south of Europe during off road testing on a remote gravel road in the countryside. The two super sports cars were taken to the extreme in this long lasting test in the dust . The sports car is Ferrari's answer to Porsche's RS-models, and both of them use almost the same recipe. While Porsche makes the RS-models lighter but keep the same horsepower as the base GT3, Ferrari gives the CS not just a lighter body but also some more power .The standard F430 delivers 490 bhp and the Stradale is believed to give away at least 520 bhp and about 100 kg less weight. The biggest visible change are the exhaust pipes that have moved up a bit. Due to safety regulations around the world the door windows are not made of plastic anymore like on the 360 CS and the wheels have 5 normal bolts instead of one centre bolt li

Tau man ji D (2005)
2007-07-03 09:39:00
Two mountain road racers, Nakazato and Takahashi, challenged each other to find the best racers, and defeat them in "battles". Nakazato was surprisingly defeated by an old Toyota Trueno AE86 (Corolla in the US) one night, and he searched for the person who defeated him, which lead him to the Speedstars, a local team. But the car who beat him was actually driven by a local Tofu shop owner's son, Takumi Fujiwara, who had unknowingly perfected the art of mountain racing through daily deliveries of tofu. Takumi was able to defeat Nakazato again, showing that he is no fluke. However, winning hasn't helped him home life, as his father, Bunta Fujiwara, was a drunkard (and a racing genius). His girlfriend Natsuki Mogi wants his attention even though she's got a dark and shameful secret, and his best friend Itsuki (who has no talent in driving) wants Takumi to teach him road racing... after buying the WRONG car. In a mountain road encounter, they ran into Team Emperor's Mitsubishi Evo, and

Fiat 500 Mini Car May come to US
2007-07-03 08:39:00
According to an article in Automotive News, Fiat is considering exporting the new 500 microcar to the States sometime next decade. But instead of getting the rather moribund city car version, we're likely to be blessed with the Abarth 500, complete with a turbocharged 1.4-liter inline four. AN pegs output at 120 HP (or 135 HP depending on which article you read), but since the 500 plans to go head-to-head with the MINI, other reports have suggested that the lil' blown motor will be making upwards of 150 HP.The launch of the Fiat will come soon after Alfa Romeo reestablishes itself in the U.S. in 2009, as the two dealers will coincide with each other, mainly in larger, urban areas.

Five Car Insurance Mistakes You Should Avoid
2007-07-03 00:20:00
Recently Five for the Money took a look at some of the biggest mistakes consumers make when buying life insurance. This week we'll tackle car insurance. Auto insurance isn't as fraught a subject as life insurance; buying a sensible policy doesn't need to be a reminder of inevitable death. But that doesn't mean it's easy to negotiate. Having the wrong car insurance, or making the wrong claims, can put a serious ding in someone's financial health. As with life insurance, some of the rules are straightforward: shop around to ensure a fair deal and review your policy annually to make sure that it still fits your life and financial condition. Here are a few other common mistakes policyholders should swerve away from:1. Don't assume the insurance salesman is your friend. The best insurance policies for consumers aren't necessarily the ones that bring in the best numbers and bonuses for salespeople, says Andrew Tignanelli, president of Luthersville (Md.)-based money management outfit Fi
