You Know You're Addicted to Computers When... 2007-06-06 18:50:35 You go to a McDonalds 15min from your house to use the WiFi because you live in the middle of nowhere with only dialup, arriving at 9PM, and leaving past 2AM. Seriously, though, I shouldn't have done this. I really need to branch out and do more than computer crap. I was trying to compile PHP5 with fastcgi so that I could install APC cache to improve my site's performance. As it turns out, this crap is hard to compile, and I am going to give up and perhaps outsource it sometime, unless anyone out there wants to give free help in...

Security Notice: Mambo and Joomla Hack Attempts More Rampant 2007-06-06 06:12:53 Updated 6/9/2007It seems that many hackers (mostly Turkish, according to my server logs) have been attempting to break into Joomla
and Mambo based sites. They usually attack just by requesting a URL that at the same time would be able to change your CMS settings if you aren't up to date, and hardened. Some of these URLs include the following:/index.php?_REQUEST[option]=com_content _REQUEST[Itemid]=1 GLOBALS=...

Top 10 Must-Have Joomla Addons 2007-06-02 07:55:06 As I continually try to improve my site, I always seem to have some Joomla
components, modules, modifications, and mambots that I always have to have. It just so happens that there are 10 such additions for this great CMS. Hopefully this list will enlighten you, and introduce you to an addon you need, or want to use. Without further ado, here is my list of the top 10 Joomla Addons:1. OpenSEF (http://www.mambodemo.com/opensef/)I was majorly a user of 404SEF, but I ended up having too many issues with it to keep using it. OpenSEF is...

Make Your Website Fast 2007-06-01 03:21:42 The sad fact of the matter is that there are still many people using Dialup, even today. Considering that the languages and techniques applied in modern web design are bigger than those of the days of old (in general), it makes it hard on this large population of Dialup users. This is my reasoning for staying away (as much as possible) from Ajax, as well as any unneccessary Java or flash content. I still do all the tweaking I can to make my site fast, not just for broadband users, but for everyone who visits. How do I do this?...

World Dialup Speed Record of 922 Kbps 2007-05-29 17:27:51 I forgot about this screenie I took back in my Dialup only days, but yes, this is an authentic non-Photoshopped image of what Windows reported my speed to be on a Dialup connection I made in the past. Though I doubt it is accurate, I just can't help but poke fun, and add that I still think Kubuntu is far superior to Windows. This has happened to me more than once, too...hard to believe, isn't it?

Site Structure Change..Again 2007-05-29 13:54:43 I am so sorry about all of this. I know that many of you are getting 404 errors for links from other sites, and that is because I migrated to a different CMS and am using a different SEF extension as of today. I will look over the logs and 301 redirect all of the links that send you to erroneous pages, so that they will send you to the correct page. Hopefully Google will reindex soon and this whole nightmare (supplemental pages + having to migrate) will be over. Keep checking back!

Climbing Out of Supplemental Result Hell 2007-05-28 18:00:00 Apparently, Joomla and Mambo aren't good when it comes to staying out of Google's supplemental index (appropriately named Google Hell (http://www.forbes.com/2007/04/29/sanar-google-skyfacet-tech-cx_ag_0430googhell.html) ), especially if an unaware webmaster enables the PDF and print icon options. I was previously unaware, and found that of my 700-800 links in Google's index, 699 of them were supplemental, meaning they are displayed at the very back of all of the search pages, and are rarely scanned by the Google spider. The cause...

PageRank 10 - Can He Do It? 2007-05-28 07:22:40 I ran across PageRank

Whoever the person that owns it is, he/she has an interesting goal: get from PageRank 0 to PageRank 10 in 730 days. Currently, the site has 327 days left and has a PageRank of 6. The site relies on inlinks from other sites, with the top referring sites listed on the front page. Why not drop a link to their site, and sign up! Firefox Users:Prevent Accidental Clicks on AdSense Ads 2007-05-25 08:58:58 I am guilty of one or two accidental clicks on ads running on my site. The first time it happened was last year, as I was redesigning the layout. As I was examining the results, I accidentally clicked one. I felt terrible about it for a while, and then just made sure to not click my ads. The last time it happened was just a while ago when I noticed what looked like a YouTube video on my site. I thought I don't remember putting this up... and clicked the play button. What I didn't realize until later was that it, in fact, was an...

Definition of Quality Content is Unclear 2007-05-24 09:59:51 In light of recent changes to Google policy (Banning MFA sites as well as Arbitrage (http://www.jensense.com/archives/2007/05/google_adsense_16.html), Banning Paid Backlinks (http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/how-to-report-paid-links/))
I have a question: What is quality content? Think about it. How does
Google judge what is quality content, and what is an MFA site?...We
know that the basic idea of an MFA site is an automated site spammed
onto the search engines, which contains sometimes readable content,
with AdSense or other ads...

All About Blackhat SEM / SEO 2007-05-21 05:16:26 SEO or SEM, whichever you prefer (Search Engine Optimization, Search Engine Marketing) is a curious subject. There is what is known as White Hat SEO, which involves standard link building, blogging, and constant maintenance upon a site. Black Hat SEO involves one having multiple sites, whether in folders on a domain, subdomains, or separate domains (usually on throwaway .info domains), which are designed around a niche. These sites then generate their own (useless or copied) content, display them to look like a portal,...

SEO Tip: Increase Your Site Size 2007-05-11 06:31:27 Sorry about the pun in the title, but I couldn't resist. Kubuntu - My Favorite Distro and Why You Should Try It 2007-05-04 03:54:48 I have had way to many problems lately with Vista on my HP Pavilion dv9000 (specifically a dv9250us)... Quite frankly, it is pretty, but it really doesn't get the job done. Where did I turn? I didn't go to Windows XP. I instead opted for Linux. I chose the Kubuntu

Windows Vista Ensures You Know What Your Computer is Doing 2007-04-25 05:27:49 (click to enlarge)I decided to run Windows
Defender, since I recently was the lucky
recipient of a rootkit. Needless to say, Defender found nothing. It seems Microsoft has made a special effort to ensure that the users of Vista
aren't plagued with the problems of having actual control or knowledge over what goes on inside their computer. (See Your Computer

Woot Having Problems? 2007-04-23 16:27:01 Unless you don't look at Woot (http://www.woot.com) regularly, you know that at 12AM the front page usually changes to the new product for sale. Today (12:25 AM, April 24, 2007) this is not the case. Is Woot having technical difficulties? Is someone up there asleep at the wheel, and neglecting to do their job? Whatever the case, having 10k users every minute or so refresh the page has to be a killer on their bandwidth (the reason this post leads here).

Scripts Hackers Attempt to Inject 2007-06-10 10:08:31 I have had lots of code injection attempts as of late, and none have been successful. What the people behind these attacks are doing fit into two categories:1. They are hacking sites just to display a hacked by (http://thedivaslist.com/.r/) page, to get more cred among the hacker community2. They are using these injection scripts (http://www.mattparnell.com/downloads/Download/HackerScripts
