The Evil in Life
2007-06-08 22:26:00
The issue of dealing with evil in our lives was brought to mind today. As Calvinist's we certainly have a very peculiar view of the existence of evil compared to the rest of the world. How do we actually handle evil though? Do we rejoice and thank God despite the wicked things done by others to us or the calamity that befalls us? Are we satisfied that the Lord's will was done in our life when destruction comes? If we are truly Calvinist's should this not be the case? If we are the Lord's vessels of mercy, and he determines that tragedyshould come across our path who are we to question it? If it good in His sight, is it not good? This all sounds well and good on a screen or paper, but what about the reality of it? I think perhaps one of the toughest things of Calvinism is it's view of the existence of evil, and even then it is not so much the view but the dealing with it when it rears its head. That is when your Christianity becomes real, and doctrine gets serious. Where do you put

The Biblical View of Science
2007-06-08 15:31:00
As a Christian who is studying to be a Physicist, it is important that I have a proper view of science. To say that science is where we derive truth from is incredibly unscriptural. Here is a great article on Vincent Cheung's website, thought it is actually from the Trinity Foundation. There is no question that humanity has erred greatly on it's incredible trust in science. The Biblical View of Science ...who say to a tree, You are my father, and to a stone, You gave me birth. For they have turned their back to me,and not their face. But in the time of their trouble they say,Arise and save us! - Jeremiah 2:27 ESV

Thought, Understanding, and the Bible
2007-06-08 12:32:00
It should be foremost in our minds when we read and study The Bible, the incredible respect that this book demands. A failure to observe that demands will be replied to with catastrophic consequences. Every heresy and "bible-based" cult has risen from a lack of respect in the mind of a man. Perhaps this was not intentional, but we must consider the effects of sin on the mind and how quickly it is to deceive. We must take great care when handling the Word of God that we not be led astray by our minds. Learning to think properly, and logically can be of great use. If we can learn to think properly, we will also not be snared so easily by the irrational thoughts of others, though they appear to be acceptable. A proper understanding of logic and logical fallacy will improve our reading of The Bible and dealing with the doctrines of men.Take advantage of these lectures titled "Introduction to Logic" available at The Trinity Foundation for no charge. The textbook used in the class is also av

Orthodox Presbyterian Church
2007-06-07 11:06:00
I recently made my first visit to the local Orthodox Presbyterian Church for their evening service. This was quite a new experience, since the church that I have attended for the past 5 years is much more laid back to say the least. Heavily structured and quite formal is probably the best description for this church. This is not necessarily a bad thing either; for me however, it was a major shock to the system. The service started out with a hymn, and followed with a recitation about the ten commandments. It was a group confessions of each of the commandments in a generic way that no one can really deny. This was probably one of my favorite parts. I liked how they dealt with sin as the first issue. I think a big reason for spiritual immaturity and immorality among Christians is simply due to a failure to address sin as a church. You think this would be obvious being that we are all sinners, but it feels like this issue is kind of pushed to the side.A recitiation of the Nicene Creed was

Life after Christ
2007-06-06 20:51:00
Surely life is an adventure. As a Christ ian though, this seems to take on new meaning. Before the Lord saved me, life was a seeming endless string of random events that I hoped would end up working in my favor, and I tried to influence that chaos as much as possible. After my encounter with the Gospel and the Word of God, things seemed to have changed a bit. It adds value, and purpose to those seemingly random events. What was before failure, disappointment, irritating, overwhelming, or even success, and victory, now has higher intent than anything my feeble mind could have conceived.I think the realization that God has a plan and purpose was one of the most life changing revelations I have had.One of the most amazing things I think we can observe in this life is to see the Word of God as active in our lives. It is interesting how the meaning parts of the scriptures can be so unclear, but then providence arrives and understanding arrives right behind it.Lamentations 3:37Who is he that s

What to do?
2007-06-11 05:49:00
An interesting situation has occurred in my life that is proving difficult to deal with. I recently realized that my church had open theistic tendencies among other things that I had a very difficult time accepting. I might note that I am extremely close to these people; they are family to me. Leaving is not something you just wake up one day and nonchalantly decide not to associate with them anymore: it would be like saying your not going to associate with your mother, or brother anymore. These things are not done lightly. I was reading the 1689 London Confession one day and I came across chapter 3, article 1:God hath decreed in himself, from all eternity, by the most wise and holy counsel of his own will, freely and unchangeably, all things, whatsoever comes to pass; yet so as thereby is God neither the author of sin nor hath fellowship with any therein; nor is violence offered to the will of the creature, nor yet is the liberty or contingency of second causes taken away, but rather

Testimony Essay for English
2007-06-10 00:21:00
One day in the spring of 2002, life was going along pretty much as it had been. I was riding around town with my friend Royce, which was not unusual. However, the reason I was with Royce this day was a little unusual. Several days prior, Royce had an “experience” and had suddenly become very religious and had been acting extremely odd. Royce had plenty of friends in his life, but none of them seemed too willing to spend any time with him at this point. Royce, in my estimation, had always been a pretty good friend to me, and so I decided it would be decent of me to spend some time with him regardless of how odd he was acting. It is probably necessary for me to interject at this point a bit of my past. At 11 years old my life took a grim turn after my parents divorce. I turned inward and pushed everything else out. Drug use came not long after that and became my best friend for years, being the one I could reliably turn to for an escape from this life. After moving around the country

What to do Part 2
2007-06-13 17:59:00
After cooling off for a couple days, I find myself between two rocks. I do not have any real desire to leave my church and I have no desire to go to another church. In fact, the idea of going to another church makes me rather uncomfotable. Sadly, staying is also going to be rather uncomfortable as well. I will not be of the same mind as the rest. I will not be at liberty to speak freely as I was before. I will have to deal with the constant temptation of judging the people as well, being that we do not think alike. I will also have to edit my speaking if I every did preach or teach there again. Not to mention the damaged relationship with my professor. Most of the people in the church do not even know, but the few that do have generally tried to express the idea that this is a secondary issue and that (open theism) not worth dividing or breaking fellowship over. I have also heard repeatedly from several that they have struggled with the issue for years and that no one has all

God's Hand
2007-06-18 06:11:00
When we talk about the work of Christ we talk about "what He has done for us", and the "work of Calvary". In Mel Gibson's movie The Passion, it is portrayed quite plainly the absolute horrors Christ subjected himself to at the hands of men. Consider the great controversy that has been made of saying that the Jews killed Jesus. Consider this passage,And Pilate again said to them, Then what shall I do with the man you call the King of the Jews? And they cried out again, Crucify him. And Pilate said to them, Why, what evil has he done? But they shouted all the more, Crucify him. - Mark 15:12-14It seems quite clear that the these people shouting bare some responsibility for the death of the Son of God. Again, in Peter's first discourse after the ressurrection he addresses people who were identified clearly:Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. - Acts 2:5If you continue reading, you will see that he plainly declares them as responsible for t
