Sabbath Keeping 2007-06-21 09:05:00 My wife has been running up against this doctrine quite frequently recently (due to the fact that the majority of Reformed folks seem to be Presbyterian) and has observed a woman on a forum dealt with rather harshly (reminds me of a trial by the Inquisition really) because she has received the Westminster Confession of Faith, except for the bit about Sabbath
Keeping. The Westminster, and the London Baptist Confession both read almost identically on Sabbath keeping: As it is of the law of nature, that, in general, a due proportion of time be set apart for the worship of God; so, in his Word, by a positive, moral, and perpetual commandment, binding all men in all ages, he hath particularly appointed one day in seven for a Sabbath, to be kept holy unto him: which, from the beginning of the world to the resurrection of Christ, was the last day of the week; and, from the resurrection of Christ, was changed into the first day of the week, which in Scripture is called the Lord's Day, and is
The Meaning of Words 2007-06-20 17:13:00 It has occurred to me here recently, or re-occurred I should say, the incredible importance that rests on the meaning of words. In having a discussion on knowledge with Bryan, which took place over an hour or more, we debated this and that and made points and rebuttals, only to find out in the end that all we had was a misunderstanding of the definition of ONE WORD. A difference in the understanding of one single word destroyed the context of the whole discussion and we debated over two different things, without knowing it. It's like being blindly shot at, and theres no chance of actually being hit. You just hear the noise so you shoot back. And I think innumerable arguments have no doubt ended in futility because of the issue of definition. Words
mean things and we cannot ignore that. What a word means to me is determined by many things. Certainly there is a common consensus on definitions of most words, but there are shades of meaning and shifts in value and weight in the mind of ev Read more:Meaning
Scripturalist Discussion 2007-06-19 13:26:00 I would like to develop a bit of discussion here on the topic of scripturalism if we might. Please read the article that I quoted from: Introduction to Gordon H. ClarkAnd compare also this article with what Robbins says: The Biblical View of ScienceWhat are your thoughts?I am persuaded of one thing: That I must accept as my presupposition that the Bible is the Word of God. The thought that goes hand in hand with that is this: I must reject sensation as a source of knowledge. I agree that the Bible does not teach some things. It is hard for me to disagree with the statement that anything that is not found in or deduced from scripture is derived from sensation or logic. My next thought is that these two things are fallible. However these things may fall out in the end, I cannot deny the statement in the Westminster: The whole counsel of God, concerning all things necessary for his own glory, man's salvation, faith, and life, is either expressly set down in Scripture, or by good and neces Read more:Discussion
Scripturalist? 2007-06-19 10:50:00 I have been listening to John Robbins quite a bit lately, and reading Gordon Clark as well. If I understand correctly, they are what you would call 'scripturalists'.From an article by Robbins, which is available here, he says,Clark did not try to combine secular and Christian notions, but to derive all of his ideas from the Bible alone. He was intransigent in his devotion to Scripture: All our thoughts -- there are no exceptions -- are to be brought into conformity to Scripture, for all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are contained in Scripture. Scripturalism is the logically consistent application of Christian -- that is, Scriptural -- ideas to all fields of thought. One day, God willing, it will not be necessary to call this philosophy Scripturalism, for it will prevail under its original and most appropriate name, Christianity. Now this statement was quite a surprise to me, because I have always thought this since the Lord saved me. I was not aware that anyone had an actual n
The Madness of My Co-Worker 2007-06-18 11:54:00 One day I was driving in my car and smoking a cigarette, and I stopped to get gas. I did not even notice that I was pumping the gas with the hand I had the cigarette in. The fumes ignited and so I pulled the flaming gas pump out of my car and started yelling for help, and the gas pump kept spraying lit gasoline all over the place."My Response: "You shouldn't tell people that." The Madness of my Co-Worker 2007-06-26 10:16:00 I asked my Co-Worker
what his IQ was yesturday. He said that he did not know. Of course within about 30 seconds he was at www.iqtest.com taking a test. To the shame of the world he scored higher than most people: a whopping 116, with the average person being at about 100. This is probably the scariest thing I have ever heard. Read more:Madness

Anti-Spanking Laws 2007-07-15 00:08:00 In the past thirty years or so, there has been much more focus put on child discipline. This focus however, has been in the negative; an increasing number of people have been opposing corporal punishment. This opposition would not be of any real consequence to those whose convictions in regards to child rearing include corporal punishment, except that this opposition has now escalated to the point of enforcement. It is claimed that disciplining one’s children in this fashion is committing an act of violence towards a child and constitutes child abuse. Alternative disciplinary methods have been demanded instead. Several countries have adopted laws prohibiting physical discipline of children in any form, and of these, Sweden has had such a law since 1979. Surely sufficient time has elapsed, and studies have been performed, in regards to the supposed multitude of benefits that should be reaped from these most virtuous claims by those opposed to spanking children.Perhaps the first Read more:Spanking
Biblical View of Truth 2007-07-12 06:58:00 Perhaps you have never given the idea much thought. Maybe you do not see the need to give it much thought. I should mention though, that your perception of what is truth, or the manner in which you obtain your knowledge may be slightly more flawed than you are aware. I am not sure about the rest of the world, but in America, we are constantly bombarded by "science".This week, eggs are good for you. Next week they are bad for you. Tomorrow they will cause cancer.A glass of wine a day is healthy. No alcohol is good for you.We are all familiar with these statements from the scientific community. However no one told you that "science" is not as sturdy as it appears. As a Christian you are under obligation to have a change in epistemology, that is, your theory of knowledge. This article should give you a good introduction to what our view of truth is to be.The Biblical

Hebrews 13:15 2007-07-17 11:50:00 Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. - ESVThrough him - All our dependency is upon him, even for the most basic, staple worship, we depend wholly on Christ. We offer our sacrifices through him, for he has sanctified and made our offerings acceptable to God. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. - John 15:5, ESVAll our supply for sacrifices and offerings to God is derived from Christ. This is most necessary, for if the offerings are derived from our own selves, it would be a most unholy sacrifice.let us continually - In the Greek text, "continually" is actually two words that, if translated literally, would be "through all", which seems to add a certain strength that is not in the English word "continually". We are to make our offering through all things. The circumstances are irrelevant. If ou
A Bit of Enjoyment 2007-07-23 11:59:00 I have experienced somewhat of a refreshing lately, and have particularly been enjoying a few writings. The Resolutions of Jonathan EdwardsThe Diary of David BrainerdIf you were ever lacking any humility, you are about to find it.
From the Diary of David Brainerd 2007-07-25 11:23:00 My soul felt and tasted that the Lord is gracious; that he is the supreme good, the only soul-satisfying happiness; that he is a complete, sufficient, and almighty portion. The language of my heart was, "Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee. " Oh!, I feel that it is heaven to please him, and to be just what he would have me to be! Oh! that my soul were "holy, as he is holy!" Oh! that it were "pure, even as Christ is pure;" and "perfect, as my Father in heaven is Perfect!" These I feel are the sweetest commands in God's book, comprising all others. And shall I break them! must I break them! and I under the necessity of it as long as I live in the world! Oh! my soul, woe, woe, is me, that I am a sinner, who continually grieve and offend this blessed God, infinite in goodness and grace! Oh! methinks if he would punish me for my sins, it would not wound my heart so deep to offend him; but though I sin continually, yet he continually repeat Read more:Diary

Hunger and Thirst 2007-09-24 13:21:00 This morning while looking over my verses to memorize this week (James 4:11-12), the couple verses just before it really caught my attention. James 4:8-10Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.It occurred to me just how offensive this type of talk is today. You certainly wouldn't hear this from some of the more positive speakers today. In fact they would probably say contrary, that God does not want you to be unhappy. Oh? Maybe I misread it then. No it definitely says "be wretched and mourn and weep". Consider our condition Christians. Look at what we have become. I heard a man simply read the Sermon on the Mount this morning and was horrified by it. Have we cleansed our hands? Do we still do things that the bible says are evil and sin? Read more:Hunger
Concerning Spiritual Health and Stability 2007-09-19 06:08:00 Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry. 1 Corinthians 10:12-14 ESVAt times we find it necessary to deal with issues of habitual sin. This process of purification can be quite grievous, especially if it is a sin that has been deeply rooted in habit. I think it profitable, however obvious it might seem, to mention that such issues we ought to deal with quite specifically. Some issues are more difficult to overcome. I have been guilty of thinking that as long as I get enough reading of the scripture in and spend enough time in prayer that everything will be well. Yet how many times has that failed me. Indeed, a more specific application is necessary. Just as when we have a wound in the fle Read more:Health
