PicK Of The Day: Two Countries 2007-11-28 23:00:00 There I was in between two countries - Cambodia on the left, and Thailand on the right, represented by their flags. I was there for quite a while, snapping away shot after shot, trying to get both flags to be seen clearly in the photo. Nobody bothered me. I was just another mad tourist at the border. Two Hungry Guys 2007-12-05 17:01:00 Bohol Philippines. That's Malt (on the left, who took this starfish photo as well) and Ven (our missionary in Bohol) clowning on the beach with a starfish. Too bad they didn't actually eat the thing, and let me know how tasty it was. Read more:Hungry
Travelling 2007-12-04 11:01:00 I'm travelling again. This Friday - December 7th to Monday 10th, to Koh Kong Cambodia again. Yup, you may be wondering if our missionaries in Cambodia have been misbehaving so badly that I had to go there so many times to knock their heads together... well, this time, that's not the reason. It's because the church - GLBC Koh Kong - is celebrating its second anniversary on the 9th. Yay, a celebration!I don't relish air travel that much. It's so boring. And sometimes we spend more hours sitting in the airport than in the plane itself. Yawn, yawn. This is my regular travel companion, reading at Manila's Ninoy Aquino Airport Terminal. The two of us were waiting for our connecting flight to Dumaguete City that afternoon. On an early morning flight 7am to Bangkok, this shot was taken from my plane window at Singapore's Changi Airport.I also saw the baggage handlers loading the luggage into our plane. Hmm, where's my luggage? I can't see my luggage! Ohhhh dear! And these are the countri Read more:Travelling
Our Hotel In Koh Kong 2007-12-19 23:24:00 Yesterday, I wrote about our good friend the hotel owner and his family. Since he was so kind to give us free accomodation in his hotel two months ago, here's a free advertorial for all readers who will be heading for Koh Kong, Cambodia.Where to stay: Please stay at the Asean Hotel
! You may occupy all the rooms except three rooms on the third floor, which are mine, Pastor Vic's and Deacon Colin's. The three of us go to Koh Kong regularly, and will continue to do so all through 2008, Lord willing. While I'm quite happy for the hotel to be fully booked the whole year round, I hope we won't be told that there's 'no room at the inn' when we show up!Here is a picture of the hotel lobby...My room on the third floor...Room rates: From US$5/- for a room on the ground floor to US$20/- for a room on the second or third floor with sea-view.View of the sea and the bridge from the balcony of my room...Night viewWhere to eat: A very good restaurant is located next to the hotel, and we had b
Visitors 2007-12-18 11:01:00 Our church in Koh Kong, Cambodia, received unexpected visitors one afternoon. They were very important visitors too.No, I wasn't the important visitor. When I travel to Cambodia to visit Marissa, Pastor Noe and family and the other missionaries, I consider myself a family member and make myself very much at home there. The owner of the Asean Hotel, with his wife and very cute little daughter, arrived and called on Pastor Noe just as we (Pastor Vic and I) were settling down for a meeting with him.Of course we had to forget the meeting and attend to the VIPs. Besides his wife and baby daughter, the hotel owner was also accompanied by his son, his mother-in-law and a couple of cousins. When such important visitors call on us, we bring out the soft drinks, biscuits and chocolates. (Hmm. Marissa has never brought out the chocolates for me when I visit her. Instead, the moment I arrive, she'll go...did you buy chocolates for me from Singapore?? Did you? Did you?)The hotel owner had appeare Read more:Visitors
Second Anniversary 2007-12-16 06:05:00 Four Sundays ago on 25th Nov, we celebrated a milestone - our church's 20th Anniversary
in Singapore. Last Sunday, I zipped to Cambodia for the weekend celebration of our daughter church's 2nd Anniversary.GLBC Koh Kong Cambodia turned two on 9th December, and the invited guest speaker was Pastor Vic. He was accompanied by a small team of Singaporeans, and for some of them, it was their first time on a mission trip.We were up bright and early for a sumptuous breakfast at the restaurant next to the Asean Hotel.Pastor Noe came to pick us up in the van. Our brethren were busy preparing lunch in the backyard.Yummy! The first service was held outside, and James led in the singing and action songs, while Daniel played the guitar. Some of us joined in the songs. And then Team Singapore dressed up for the skit. Now, do not expect to see me among all these serious-looking actors and actresses. As the script writer for the skit, as well as the treasurer and photographer for the whole trip, I was al Read more:Second
Visit To Bangkachang 2007-12-15 07:05:00 Two months ago, I visited Bangkachang island with Pastor Vic and Marissa, and it was such a lovely, sandy little village. There were kids sitting in the sand, kids gathered for bible lessons and games, and kids playing with a kite on the stone jetty.Last weekend, I visited the island again, and on this trip, we brought a team along, including Jee Sia and her gang, Dominique and Denise. We reached the jetty and Marissa pointed out the village to me. Oh my, it was flooded!I've heard about the flooding from various sources. I've heard how brother Toh kept his dear wife's feet dry when they visited this place. Now I've seen it for myself. Marissa didn't mind. She headed straight for the village and started wading through the water. So did the rest of us. Jee Sia andYvonne looked extremely happy.Dominique looked happy too.The whole gang. There's Marissa and Dominique going on ahead. And the rest, holding onto one another in casesomeone tripped and fell.I really don't know why, but there
My Second Visit To Bangkachang - Getting There 2007-12-12 11:01:00 Not long ago, I wrote about my first visit to Bangkachang island. The small village on the island, described as a model community in the whole of Koh Kong province in Cambodia, has a population of about 500 people, and our missionary, Marissa and a few young people go there each Saturday afternoon to minister to the children. They were able to gather about 50 kids each time, to teach them songs, tell them bible stories and play games. The Lord was good to us on my first visit - it was low tide, and the island was dry and sandy, and I liked it. This picture was taken two months ago.My second trip barely two months later... oh my, what a difference! First of all, our team was a lot bigger the second time around, and we had first time mission trippers such as Brother Sang and Sister Dominique with us.We also had several young people in the group - 11-year-old Denise, 12-year-old Paul and 14-year-old Priscilla. The only way to get to Bangkachang island is by sea, because no bridge connects Read more:Second
Well 2007-12-25 11:01:00 Like the woman at the Well I was seeking,For things that could not satisfy. And then I heard my Savior speaking,Draw from my Well that never shall run dry!Fill my cup Lord, I lift it up Lord,Come and quench this thirsting of my soul!Bread of heaven feed me till I want no more,Fill my cup, fill it up and make me whole.Koh Kong Cambodia. These city-ku (the opposite of sua-ku) youngsters had never seen a well in their entire lives before, because it seems that they always think water comes from turning on a tap in their modern condominium. They had such fun playing at the well in the school on Bangkachang island, Cambodia. I think we should send all our Sunday school city-ku children to Bangkachang.
PicK Of The Day: Blessed Christmas! 2007-12-23 18:40:00 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. 7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. 8 And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. 10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. 12 And this [shall be] a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. - Luke 2:6-12 Read more:Christmas

PicK Of The Day: Monks 2007-12-22 04:36:00 Thailand. Monks have been in the news lately in Myanmar, Thailand and Cambodia. We saw at least a hundred (maybe more) of them marching down the road as we were in our van on the way to the Thai-Cambodian border. We wondered where they were going.
Jollibee 2008-03-25 11:40:00 In the Philippines, the Number One favourite fast food place is not Macdonalds, or KFC. It's Jollibee. I don't eat there often because it's always crowded, regardless which shopping mall or city I am in. The top pic is the Jollibee at Island City Mall, Tagbilaran City Bohol, and the one above is in Dumaguete City. What do they serve at Jollibee... there's cheese fries, and spaghetti with chicken. Annie, Kev, Xiuying and I had lunch at the Jollibee in Dumaguete, and yes, it was crowded, but we found seats on the second floor. The others had rice with chicken, and it was good. In the Philippines, Jollibee, Macdonalds and KFC all have fried chicken with rice on their menus, and from an informal survey, I understand from our Filipino missionary friends that the best-tasting fried chicken with r
2008 Koh Kong Trip 2008-04-05 15:39:00 We returned from our Koh Kong Cambodia trip on Tuesday morning. Very very early early morning. Please forgive me, am sort of still in a complaining mood!On my previous 3 Koh Kong trips last year, I went back to work the next day even though our flights home were usually late at night. Well, this time I decided to take one more day (no mood to work on April Fool’s Day, I s’pposed) and guess what? Our 615pm flight was delayed more than an hour at first, and when we finally took off, it was 820pm or some such thing. The ground crew and stewards and stewardesses checked and rechecked our boarding passes like at least half a dozen times trying to catch one blur passenger who won’t respond to his name being announced (maybe should use Singlish instead of Thai accent huh) while we sat in th
Loboc River Cruise 2008-04-04 23:10:00 Bohol Philippines. After our morning, three-hour cruise in a narrow boat and after exploring the camp site, we headed for lunch at a floating restaurant. Yes, we went for our second river cruise. This one's for tourists on the Loboc River
.If you're wondering why we were so greedy to take two river cruises in one day, that was because it was our last day in Bohol. Our fastcraft to Cebu was early morning the next day and thereafter we were going to Iloilo City.In addition to the mouth-watering buffet, there was free entertainment on board the floating restaurant.as well as free entertainment outsideHello, what's this? How come got pic of two young ladies bathing naked in the river?? Yikes, I thought this blog is rated 'Family Friendly'? How dare you show nudity and X-rated photos!!!Oh well, Read more:Cruise
Library 2008-04-08 14:03:00 Koh Kong, Cambodia. In Dec 2007, we visited an interesting and unusual library in the school at Bangkachang island, off Koh Kong Cambodia. The construction cost of the library was sponsored by a non-profit organization (Greentree Global) in the States. Here's the proud principal of the school looking at the sign put up to acknowledge the sponsorship. The kids sat on little chairs, and enjoyed reading, and talking, and playing games. Some of the books in the library. We made ourselves quite at home there during our visit. That's Yvonne on one of the little chairs.Lee Sang, Paul and Jee Sia.We couldn't help wondering what they do when it rains, because it does rain rather frequently and heavily. Well, I guess the library will have to close and move indoors, perhaps to one of the 4 classrooms, d Read more:Library
One Year (And A Few Days) Old 2008-04-11 23:21:00 I am so bad at remembering birthdays. In fact, I make a conscious effort not to remember any, especially my own. All my Filipino brethren and friends, who are so good at remembering birthdays, probably won’t understand this, cos they’ll even SMS a week ahead to say things like – ‘te Deb, it will be my birthday on March 16th… all the way from Cambodia. And all that week I kept saying to myself, Yah, yah, on March 16th I better email plus fax and call and text her back to wish her a blessed birthday but guess what?? I forgot.Anyway, my beloved blog, tenforty.blogspot.com turned one-year-old a few days ago, on 7th April. YAY, confetti and chocolate durian cake, please! I started the blog when I woke up the morning after Good Friday on a Saturday, on 7th April 2007 and found that I h
Mango Shake 2008-04-12 14:40:00 I really like the yellow mango shake in the Philippines. It's made from ripe, fresh mangoes and usually cost about 30 pesos (S$1.10), although it can cost up to 50 pesos in Manila. I can have one at every single meal and not get fed up of it. Every now and then, though, I opted for a green (unripe) mango shake, if that's available on the menu. It's a bit sourish, but I like the kick. However, what happens when you just cannot decide between a ripe mango shake and green mango shake? Order one of each, and get double the calories? Burp. After more than a dozen trips to the Philippines, this is my first time to see a half-and-half! Pastor Balm ordered it first and the rest of us, including Pastor Mike, asked... what in the world's that! It's half-green and half-yellow! And then of course we had Read more:Mango
