The w0rd: Interesting videos describing Web 2.0 / collaboration / social networks
2007-06-08 14:02:51
The following videos should serve as an introduction to "Web 2.0" theories and practices. Web 2.0 has many different definitions, and I don’t want to get into that debate. However I use it as a generic term when referring to "new" web technologies that are social/publisher driven or highly interactive. Web 2.0 [...]

The w0rd: Manage your online identity with Ziki
2007-06-13 16:05:24
Ziki isn’t just for the French! In these times of google and everything being linked and searchable, you need to give some thought as to how your identity is represented on the Internet. Potential employers, friends, family, and the occasional stalker are all searching for you on the internet. You should be careful when posting personal information, but if you are a freelance consultant you live and die by your reputation and your name. Ziki is a handy website that allows you to aggregate all of the data you already produce into one central location. You can manage all your social network files, bookmarks, and photos. You choose what you want presented when people search for you. If you don’t want your mom to see your drunken bar photos, don’t add them to your Ziki. (more…)

Forget ebay. Sell your stuff socially and locally…
2007-06-13 11:41:27
…or How to sell everything you don’t need for cash-money! I hate ebay. I’ve been burned so many times before on ebay, from scams to broken goods, that I refuse to use it. But how do you sell all that junk you don’t need anymore? In this post I will describe some useful techniques to sell all the stuff you don’t need or want using social and local web sites. I deal in cash only, local pickup sales. I meet face to face with the buyers in a public space and never get scammed. It may take a little longer to sell your stuff, but its worth the wait when you get a motivated buyer willing to pay cash and pick up the item. (more…)

The w0rd: The Best of Free Windows Software
2007-06-12 15:05:37
I know, everybody has their own list of "best whatever". But sometimes there is one gem in the rough that you find that makes it worthwhile. When I build a PC I find that I’ve got to hunt down all the software I need to make it go. I’ve rebuilt enough PCs in my day to have this process down, but there may be others out there that don’t have a clue. This list will include FREE software that I use during the course of my work, whatever it may be. I like having everything on my workstation "just right" before I really get into working on a project. It sucks when you are in a groove and you have to stop to install some drivers or hunt for an application you need. I will include links to the software project’s homepage and a brief description. Trust me, these applications are the "best of class" variety and well worth your time. (more…)

How to access ALL of your digital media from almost any internet device…
2007-06-10 23:21:10
For the past several months I’ve been using Orb to stream music, video, photos, and live tv to my cell phone, from my media collection at my home. Orb the best mix of web 2.0 and mobile technology I’ve seen so far, a truly "killer app" in the realm of accessing your data from any location on demand. In fact I would go so far as to call Orb a prolific release that isn’t getting its due attention. In this article I’ll explain how Orb works and allows you to access your digital media from anywhere… (To give you a brief rundown of some of the devices you can stream your media to: Microsoft Xbox360, Nintendo Wii, Smartphones, PDAs, Sony Playstation 3, Laptops, Desktops, etc…) and (To give you a brief rundown of some of the data formats you can access through Orb: RSS feeds, photos, .mp3, xvid, divx, .mp4, .wav, .avi, .mpg, mpeg, live tv, etc…) (more…)

What is “Web 2.0″ and why should I care?
2007-06-17 07:54:05
I’ve been having this conversation with people quite a bit lately.  I’ve been on my high horse about "Web 2.0" technologies the past few months and trying to get people around me to start adopting them into their online habits.  In this article I will attempt to explain what the term "Web 2.0" means to me, and why the users of technology should start paying attention.  For a brief video introduction to "Web 2.0" theories, please see my previous post "The w0rd: Interesting videos describing Web 2.0 / collaboration / social networks".   (more…)

Best of the web: 50 sites - June 2007 Edition
2007-06-22 01:49:44
There is a lot of crap in the world of the web right now.  I’ve tested hundreds of web sites in the past few years so I know what works and what doesn’t.  I’m always on the lookout for the next best thing.  The following 50 websites are truly useful.  They include web applications, productivity tools, trusted retailers, fun stuff, and useful resources for information.  In no way is this meant to be a complete listing of all the good websites on the web right now, but at least a cross section of some of the quality websites available right now that I have reviewed.  So give some of these websites a spin.  If you like what you see, help spread the w0rd.  Trust me, I’m a expert.  Please feel free to post your own favorite useful websites in the comments at the bottom of this post and maybe they will be included in the next roundup.  And now, in no particular order: (more…)

Ziki.com releases V2 of their Digital Identity Management suite.
2007-06-25 13:05:12
My favorite content aggregation and digital identity management service, Ziki.com, has updated to V2. They have tweaked the layout and presentation of information regarding your profile and site navigation. The site has a more interactive feel to it. For those who haven’t checked out Ziki before, or were unsatisfied with the previous version, give V2 a spin. Please refer to my previous post on manging your digital identity with Ziki for more information. As always I wish continued success to the Ziki Team, and other small teams working to forge the next generation of the internet. Good Work.

Tips and tricks to speed up your Windows XP computer
2007-06-25 02:47:49
The problem I hear most from my clients is “My computer is slow”. There can be many reasons your computer is “slow”. In this article I will describe some simple techniques for speeding up your Windows XP installations. The main culprit for a “slow” computer is insufficient RAM. There are several settings you can change on your computer to speed up applications and the basic operation of your system. These tips are geared toward basic computer users who don’t understand how computers operate and what makes them “slow”. (more…)

Putting it all together…
2007-06-30 05:26:43
Sometimes the amount of data we have access to can become overwhelming. I open myself to as much incoming information sources as I possibly can and I often feel overwhelmed at the incoming sensory deluge. The ability to sort and filter all of this information quickly is important. Most people on the internet are still just searching the internet for websites, or worse browsing exclusively inside of closed networks or communities. Some of us are actually “subscribing” to data, allowing it to be sent to us instead of having to seek it out. As we use these new tools and technologies, we tell the computer a little more about what is important, and what we are looking for. (more…)

7.7.07: Live Earth Concert, Streaming Video, and Green Hosting
2007-07-07 18:02:33
So there is a lot of hype about 7.7.07, so I figured I would chime in with my own notes. Just in case you have been living under a rock, today is the “Live Earth Concert ”. The cool thing is that it’s being broadcast live around the world on the internet. Possibly one of the largest streaming events on the internet. While I agree with raising awareness of Environmental issues, I’ve never thought huge concerts were the best way about doing it, but to each his own. Be sure to at least check out the sites as they are interesting. MSN and Microsoft are the sponsors of the technology side, and I do have to admit I am impressed at the level of interactivity and sophistication. Good times indeed. (more…)

Just give me some “free” media…
2007-07-05 23:49:13
When it comes to consumable media , be it TV, Radio, Music, Internet, or whatever I want it to be free. In some cases I am willing to view advertisements in exchange for access to this media. Much like traditional TV and Radio, the Internet Media will be ad-supported “free”. What’s even better is the amount of content that will be available. Past seasons of your favorite shows, news broadcasts, and any number of entertainment options will be archived and available on demand. The Internet will become the new broadcast medium of choice in the future. IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) is just starting to take off. Services like Joost, VeohTV, Democracy Player, and other providers are starting to offer the same quality of content you can get with paid basic cable and on-demand services. (more…)

Treo™ 700w 700wx Updater 1.22
2007-07-20 12:53:26
Wow, looks like palm quietly released an update to the Treo 700w / 700wx for Verizon. I may test this update soon. I have already hacked the Bluetooth on my 700w to allow AD2P to work with my Motorola HT280 wireless headphones. PDAnet has already added the ability to use Bluetooth DUN. Sometimes upgrades like this scare me, they might break what I’ve already done. I will be using Palm’s “Sprite Backup” utility to make a complete backup of my Treo incase the official update screws it up. I will let you know how it goes if I do it. (more…)

The w0rd: Changes are coming
2007-07-20 12:22:35
Lots of exciting things happening the past weeks. It has been difficult to keep up with everything. I just started blogging about 2 months ago, but I still find it hard to relay the information I come across in a timely fashion. By the time I get around to writing an article on a topic, its either been talked to death on other pages or I’ve come across something even more exciting to write about. I’m going to be re-designing thew0rd.com soon. I also want to incorporate other tools I’ve found that are useful in relaying timely information to readers. This site will always be a work in progress, but hopefully the future changes will allow for more frequently updated content. Content that reflects a stream of conscious research on various topics. When I write a blog article I want the content to be quality. I don’t really believe the main article section should be used to toss up random crap or short blurbs. Posts should be well thought out and contrib

Ways to use Twitter [that dont suck]
2007-07-23 19:31:41
There have been quite a few people bashing Twitter over the past few months. While I do find that the “public” time-line traffic is mostly a bunch of garbage, I think many people are missing one of the major points of Twitter. Within a “real life” social network, Twitter can be a very useful tool to coordinate and mass update people in a group. Friends can form a network within Twitter (by subscribing to eachother) and subscribe to SMS updates via their cell phones. If a group is networked via Twitter the members may send updates to the entire network via their cell phones. This feature can come in handy when making plans that involve large groups of people. Having an SMS conversation to coordinate groups of people becomes very easy. (more…)

Request: Where is the Google Talk application for Windows Mobile BY Google?
2007-07-31 19:42:08
Something that has bugged me for quite some time about my Treo 700w is the lack of good Instant Messaging applications for Windows Mobile .  I’ve tried trial versions of virtually all of the non-free solutions.  None of them really meet up to my standards.  I just want an instant messaging application that is free, runs in the background, has a today screen plugin, and works.  I am surprised that Google has not released such an application for gTalk.  Google has released a Windows Mobile interface for Google Maps, and it works well.  You would think that an IM client would be easier to code than a mapping application! So if anybody has suggestions on FREE Instant Messaging solutions for Windows Mobile that meet the requirements above, please comment below! P.S.  I’d also love to see a free application that syncs multiple Google Calendars with Windows Mobile.   That would rock my world.

Netvibes releases mobile version for your pda or cellphone
2007-08-06 11:38:02
Now you can access Netvibes from your cell phone or other mobile device. For those not familiar with Netvibes it is a Personalized Start Page. Think of it as your personal web dashboard. To give Netvibes mobile a try create a tab called “mobile” on your Netvibes account. Drag rss, email, calendar, and other supported modules into your “mobile” tab. Point your mobile device’s browser to: http://m.netvibes.com/ and enjoy Netvibes content on your phone. I’ve tried it on my Treo 700w and it works. I might even use it instead of the mobile version of Google Reader.
