Mastic Removal
2007-06-07 08:58:10
I am on “This Old House Forum” a lot lately. There is a bunch of people there who are really into old homes. Unfortunately they have no answer for the mastic removal and l am still searching to find a product that does the job. Leaving it alone is not an option and hiring some professionals would be the last resort. My vision of a somewhat sleek country coastal kitchen with an old wood floor is set in stone. Do I really have to try out every single product that I can find?

A Beautiful View
2007-06-05 18:47:44
It’s the most gorgeous light tonight. Just after seven. The air is fresh and I see more sailboats have found there place out there since the last time I sat here. It feels strange to lounge all by myself but I am sure that will pass. My husband’s flight is delayed which I have to say seems to happen a lot. I am Swiss and we take delight in precision which includes being on time…, well I don’t travel at all really, ever since I relocated to the States my travel spirit has disappeared and I like it that way, and now with this wonderful porch and the view it is even more unlikely that I will ever take off. And it does not bother me at all that I have left a complete mess behind in our future bedroom where I have started to freshen up the windows…

Cost of Plumbing for new Bathroom
2007-06-04 08:11:24
The estimate for all the new plumbing came in around 5,000 +, leaving all the openings in the ceiling below and the walls. We just ordered the clawfoot tub at Lowes and bought the two pedestal sinks and the toilet. Today I will begin to work in the future bathroom. Prime and paint the ceiling. I chose semi gloss white for moister resistance. I haven’t really thought about the moisture built up at all until a contractor (who did a little selling job on us wanting to manage the remodel of our entire home) had mentioned it. There will be no tiles at all in the bathroom. I had installed tile in our last bathroom and am not a fan of the work and I always wanted a bathroom that looked like any other room anyway. It will be great. I can see myself already soaking in the tub by the window, breathing fresh ocean air and enjoying the water view….

New Bathroom Installation
2007-06-01 11:40:39
One of the upstairs bedrooms will be transformed into a brand new bathroom with two pedestal sinks and a self standing tub with a shower curtain ring. I have no clue as of what to expect, meaning how much all the new plumbing will cost. I should get an estimate soon. There was no way to keep the footprint and remodel the existing bathroom -too tiny. It will become a walk in closet. We are making up for it in the kitchen, where we do keep the footprint. Existing bathroom Bedroom that will be converted into new bathroom

Kitchen Cabinet Removal / Vinyl Floor Removal
2007-05-30 12:26:13
The first thing of course was to remove the old. The very old kitchen cabinets. Second step will be to repair the walls. I have also started to tear out the vinyl tiles on the floor and that is truly sweat equity. The tiles break, come off in pieces…., then it is scraping, spraying on glue solvent, then scraping again, another treatment of solvent, and, yes, scraping again. We think it is worth it since there is a wood floor underneath it. Kitchen Cabinet Removal Kitchen Floor Removal

Buyers Remorse?
2007-05-30 09:14:05
The first day in the new home was not what I would have expected. I felt sick to my stomach. Did I experience buyers remorse? Luckily not. My entire sense of safety was pulled out from under my feet with this fixer upper. I felt unsafe and exposed. In short, I was confronted with a long standing issue and that was a good thing. Now the next challenge is to just live by the minute, as I learned in meditation retreats. It does not matter how long the remodeling will take, all I can do is in the Now.

Moving tomorrow
2007-05-23 19:02:17
The old place is almost packed up and the movers will arrive early tomorrow morning. We ended up dividing the move into two days since we have two closings the same day and the movers would not have been able to go into the new house before official closing. I have heard that sometimes there is flexibility there, in our case however there is not because it’s an estate sale. Fine with us. I will be busy over the weekend and hooked back up on the internet next Tuesday….

Moving to a Coastal Home
2007-05-17 23:07:22
In less than a week I will be waking up in this house in Coastal Rhode Island. While packing up the old place I am thinking about the remodeling of the new. Move in date is May 24th. Well, I am trying not to think about the remodeling too much just yet, since the house is still owned by someone else…., so check in after the 24th. Thanks for your visit!

Your Comments on Wood Floors…
2007-06-09 10:34:51
Toby the house was built in 1930&hellip ;I kind of lean toward oak and maple too like Janet. And Melitta, I will try the bleach. Thanks.

Lots of Beginnings and Does anybody know what kind of Hardwood Floors these are?
2007-06-08 14:08:52
Today I have started several projects: glazing windows, sanding the future bedroom floor, tearing down more wallpaper in the living room. Before I could finish one window I ran out of glaze, sandpaper 80 did nothing to remove those black stains and lastly in the middle of peeling wallpaper I stopped because I so wasn’t into it…, I overheard some news though…Scientists have concluded that a deja vue is nothing more than an overlap of memories and could even indicate memory loss. Ha! I am also wondering what kind of hardwood floors we have. Does anybody know? Maybe Oak?

More on Mastic Removal
2007-06-08 13:49:21
Thanks for all the comments on the mastic. I tried hot water and it does pretty much what all the other stuff does…, softening a layer and creating a mess, so I might just go with the water then, soak it and get as much off as possible and then scrape until the job is done…, and eventually it will be.

Remove Mastic with Hot Water?
2007-06-08 08:13:19
Of course we have running hot water…, assumed that the water needed to be boiling hot. I will give it a try today, have my doubts though.

Mastic is really sticky
2007-06-07 19:11:45
This one is really really sticky…I did the scraping and got some off…., hot water, unfortunately, is not something we can try because the stove is gone -we eat salad and grill on the porch. I am still believing that there is a product out there that does the trick.

All the peeling Windows
2007-06-13 15:02:50
All windows need to be restored. Well, that is not going to happen this year. The ones with a view only, the others have to wait.

Thought I capture the living room with most of the wallpaper removed…it will be transformed with lots of primer first, then with a nice pale yellow -plus restored windows and shiny wood floor of course.

Sitting on the Wood Floor

There isn’t a machine for this…getting all the dirt out of the gaps? I use a screw driver, a brush, then sandpaper.

A brand new Roof in one day
2007-06-13 09:57:28
We’ve got our new roof and love it. Rick Buskey from Above Board Contracting came in with his crew, made a lot of noise, stacked up debris all around the house…, and ten hours later it looked like nothing ever happened, except that there was a new roof on the house. It sort of felt like magic since I never exchanged a word with anybody and did not see any of the workers come in to use the bathroom…The only thing I notice was an open screen on the second floor and the toilet seat up. Perhaps I forgot? But then I wonder where they did their business…Well, that’s the past and on to other things, lots of other things.

Old Roof Down
2007-06-12 12:24:38
The old roof is down or rather the three roof layers. Now all I hear is hammering. It started to rain too…

New Roof in Progress
2007-06-12 09:08:16
The Roofers have been tearing down the old roof since 7.30AM and just when I decided to leave the house, escape the noise and walk to the mailbox, I hit danger zone. No chance I can get out right now. Debris is piled around the house, shingles are still flying …warning signs are posted. Okay, I will wait then. Also wanted to get out to take a picture of course.

Work on Top of the Roof -Repointing Chimney
2007-06-11 20:58:07
Today, a true summer day, Paul Simonelli was repointing our Chimney as well as shortening it. We were happy that he could make it today because tomorrow the Roofers will show up…., he also gave us some good ideas on how to get some real curb appeal which the house most certainly needs. Being on the Main Road we need some separation there. Perhaps a New Englandish Stone Wall. I would love to do it right away but there is a budget to watch and it would be good to have the bathroom and kitchen in place first. We’ve only been here for two weeks now…

Another Beautiful View -Last Night’s Sunset
2007-06-11 07:44:03
As you can see I really enjoy the view here from the porch. I am new to coastal living with an ocean view, so I might post a few more in the future…

Where would you want your Laundry Room?
2007-06-15 15:34:05
Still thinking about where to put the laundry. Is it a big no no when it comes to home value to have the laundry room in the basement I wonder…, hence would a designated laundry area in the house (1st or 2nd floor) add more equity?

Searching for Space
2007-06-15 08:26:48
Still searching for space. Where could we squeeze in a mini bathroom on the first floor and where could we stack up our laundry units? This morning I woke up thinking that the laundry might fit into the future bathroom. If we built a nice closet? I am not too thrilled, but it would be really convenient. Right now they are in the basement amongst tools and dust. We had considered the walk in closet (our current bathroom) but we would loose a lot of space in there. Everything, mini bath and laundry would fit into the kitchen. It’s the largest room in the entire house, only that I have my doubts. Chopping up that room, I don’t know. I’d like to see the kitchen done first. But then it might save us some money to have the plumbing done at the same time as the upstairs bathroom conversion. If only the house would tell me. Well, I am going to fake the bathroom now with the sinks and toilet and try to imagine that laundry closet…, after that it’s restoring window

Clawfoot Tub and Lowes questionable Customer Service
2007-06-18 21:23:12
Tub had arrived an automated voice let us know. I call to make sure all the parts/accessories were there and was assured they were. We headed to North Dartmouth and waited at the Customer s Desk for our Tub…., reading magazines, checking out some stepping stones in the garden department, wondering were the tub could be. Then it was rolled in but without accessories, no faucet, no valves, no drain…, I began to study some landscaping books…, then I browsed through the Oprah Magazine. We learned that the accessories were received but could not be found and that the receiving crew was not there…, so we left with the tub in tow and were promised a phone call when the rest of the stuff was found. Possibly the same day (today), which didn’t happen. Since I have not heard from the plumber it does not really matter. Nevertheless I start to feel that I want to be reimbursed somehow for the inconvenience. In my opinion, people can’t just screw up and pretend

Laundry and Other Things
2007-06-18 21:02:20
The laundry question sort of answered itself. After actually using our front load washer for the first time it spun completely out of control in the spinning cicle. I launched at it to stop it from jumping around…, then I reached for the plug… We spent Monday returning our Kenmore H…something and are planning for smaller units which then fit perfectly into that corner in the kitchen.

Only one Coat of Paint
2007-06-22 21:10:26
With a 3/4 Inch NAP Roller, the fluffy kind, I got the paint job done with one coat only. I also used flat paint since the walls are plaster and a little uneven, or lets say not so perfect, and flat paint is very forgiving. The roller needed to be pressed firmly against the wall though -which required a bit of muscle work- in order to get the paint into any irregularities. The room is on the small side and there is a little bit of paint left in the gallon can. The color is a gray/blue which looks very nautical and of course the classic thing it brings the outside in or extends to room out…

Western Sky
2007-06-21 01:16:06
How can a beautiful view be so fulfilling? I think it’s because it resonates with the desire for inner peace, harmony, oneness…and the like, say spiritual attributes. With the mess in the house and the summer in full gear we pretty much live on the porch.

Mini Bathroom
2007-06-26 20:40:28
I wish this was my Mini Bathroom… There is a plan for a Mini Bathroom in the kitchen. The pipe will be set up while the plumbing is being done for the second floor bathroom so that in the future I can create a Powder Room as adorable as this one my parents in law found at their friends home.
