New Shower Stall Installation
2007-06-26 10:52:59
A corner shower stall has been added to the bathroom after realizing that it is just a little bit difficult to shower in a small claw foot tub. Now the baseboard heat pipe has to be redirected and there is a bit of a leveling issue with the wood floor too. I would like to think that we can level the shower base ourselves…The plumber also mentioned that shower stalls with doors always have leaking problems, hmm. I do not know what to do with that information other than ignore it. He thinks he can start working early next week.

Mindfulness and Remodeling
2007-06-25 09:47:47
Wouldn’t it be nice if at the end of this remodeling process not only the house looks beautiful but I am more enlightened too? And with that I mean -simply put- experiencing more peace. I know how to practice mindfulness…, but I forget. Instead of being mindful and observing feelings and thoughts I catch myself being completely immersed in them. For example I allow myself to get caught up in the thought and urge of having to get it done. And that is not a peaceful state of mind. And where peace is absent, fear must be present. Fear is very interesting in that that mostly it is not experienced as what it is. We disguise it as anger, impatience, judging, craving…, I do want to be the observer and this is a good opportunity to practice just that.

Lemon for the Living Room
2007-06-29 22:23:49
After two days the living room is painted with a fresh lemon yellow. There was other stuff going on too, like garden designers coming over discussing the parking and stairway to the house. Learned that paving a parking spot needs a permit by the State of Rhode Island since it is 200 feet within the water. Plants along the roadside were discussed as well. Will evergreens survive? One landscapers says yes, the other says no. So a third opinion has to come in and I’ll do some research on my own -more on this in the upcoming curb appeal category. Before and after pictures of the living room. Paint does wonders, doesn’t it? Next thing will be sanding and finishing the wood floor.

Living Room Remodel
2007-06-28 08:48:35
For the last few days I have been working on the living room. I am not even trying to restore any molding or window details, just sanding, priming, painting (over existing paint) and it turned out to be quite a big job. Totally underestimated it. I am ready to prime the walls today.

Plumbing of new Bathroom(s) has begun.
2007-07-02 12:02:16
Last Friday I got that sinking feeling that Plumber Steve who I had picked was not going to show up Monday and that got me thinking again…To rip apart the dining room just felt so intrusive. And did we really have to replace the entire cast iron sewage pipe? After some more thinking we decided to put the new bathroom above the kitchen (instead of above the living room) …., and to find a new plumber of course. And guess what. Plumbers Ed and Steve are already at work. Well they were gone when I came back an hour ago but hopefully will be back soon…The mini bathroom is being installed too in the kitchen, and all the plumbing will take place there.

New Siding: Vinyl or Cedar?
2007-06-30 21:32:34
Which siding? A lot of houses in the area have the classic cedar shingle look and today we were hunting for great homes with vinyl siding. There is horizontal vinyl and cedar shingle look vinyl, we thought we mix it up. Low maintenance and it last much longer than the white cedar we like, and it comes in different colors. Is there such a thing as bad or good quality vinyl? The houses that don’t look so are the ones that show all the seams. I am leaning toward vinyl, is that so bad? Here is the great vinyl we found on our journey trough Tiverton and Little Compton: New construction vinyl in North Tiverton. This Dutch Colonial in Little Compton is a mix. Cedar shingles on the sides and vinyl on the front. I love the color, but am not sure if it’s the right color for our place. And this is where we bought our dinner…the local fish shack.
