Family Man
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Like many others, I've been following the story of James Kim. He's the man who was stranded with his wife and two small children in Oregon on his way home to San Francisco after the Thanksgiving holidays. He was a 35-year old online editor at CNET.com, and owned a few small businesses as well. Reading about his personal life, it seems he was a man extremely dedicated to his family. I know nice things get said about the deceased everyday, but most of the things said about him seemed to ring very true for my own life as well. While traveling home, they made some wrong turns, and ended up in a terrible snow storm. Apparently after spending 8 days in the car with his family, waiting for help, he decided to head out and find help. Investigators think he traveled over 10 miles looking to save his family. What he did was amazing, in that he covered 10 brutal miles in running shoes and blue jeans.Check out this site for James Kim's Path.In the end his family was saved but he was not

Diaper Qualification
1970-01-01 00:59:59
A conversation heard in my house a few days ago....My wife says to me, "Honey, I think Lauryn's diaper is dirty, could you please change her?"I cut my eyes at her and sigh"Come on, please? I've already changed three poopy diapers today.""Why are you telling me that?" I reply"I'm just letting you know. I thought maybe you would get up and take care of it if you knew how many I've already dealt with," says my wife.I reply, "Knowing that doesn't make me want to change her diaper. It just lets me know you're more qualified."In all fairness, I do change my fair share of diapers. Just not on this day, at this moment.

What I Think is Dumb
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Wanna know what I think is dumb?I think it's dumb that I personally know people who DON'T celebrate Christmas because they believe Jesus Christ (The reason for the season) wasn't born exactly on December 25th. These families won't let their children be in the Christmas Pageant, they won't put up a tree (because the pagans originally worshiped nature at the Winter Solstice Celebration), and they won't buy gifts for all their kids (because it's all so over 'commercialized').This is dumb. Why not raise your kids to see the true meaning of Christmas, in spite of all the weird Christmasy things around us every day? Of course Jesus wasn't born on December 25th, but if you don't believe that how come you don't celebrate his birth at another point in the year?Just think this is a dumb stance. I can see the conversation now.Non-Christian coworker: " Have a Merry Christmas!"Christian: "No, I do not celebrate Christmas. Please don't bring up this word again in my presence!"Non-Chr

Am I Cool?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
My oldest son, Ryan, is 4 years old. I know many parents say these things about their children, but my son is really smart for his age. Really, he is. I mean it. The other day Ryan says to his mother, "Mom, I want to be cool." His mother responds by telling him that of course he's cool. He responds, "Mom, I'm not cool, I'm handsome. And I don't want to be handsome, I want to be cool."I can sum up Ryan's genius statement like this:Good looks will fade over time, but coolness last forever. Is he wrong?

The Greatest Show on Earth
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Last Tuesday night I attended my son's Christmas play at the MDO Day School he attends twice a week. The play consisted of 2, 3, 4, & 5 year olds. I've know that for the past two months my 4-year old, Ryan, has been learning Christmas songs, and memorizing Luke 2:7 & Luke 2:11, and has even memorized two entire lines for the play. Ryan was seriously stoked about the proceedings and was literally counting down days until the 'Christmas Show.' His Granny, from Arkansas, even came in for the ceremonies and his Daddy had the camera charged up for the great festivities. Now for those of you unaware of how these things work, the parents fight over the 'good' seats. We arrived 30 minutes before to stake out the seats, and make our claim on the best picture taking seats. My wife even asked the teacher which side of the stage Ryan would be sitting on, so we could get seats on his side of the stage. Of course sitting in the 'good' seats with a 3 year old and a 1 year old waitin

I Had No Idea
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Put this posting under the category of things they don't tell you before you choose to have children: There are so many wonderful things about having children, that I could post about them for days and days. However, there is one part of the 'parenting' thing that I have been made painfully aware of over the past 48 hours. If I had known how horrible this could be, I might have remained a recluse and lived in solitary confinement for the rest of my lonely existence. What I speak of is the dreaded STOMACH VIRUS!! So far three out of the five in my family have been stricken with the horrible virus, including myself. Why must my children always bring these horrible things into my life? I never had these problems until I started having kids, and letting them play with other kids. I'm thinking of making my kids wear rubber gloves at school now, and forcing them to sanitize themselves every 15 minutes while they are home. (Just kidding, don't send horrible emails.) I'll spare yo

Most American Have Done It
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Saw this story the other day on the Internet and on the news. Most American s Have Had Premarital Sex Two Things:I did NOT have premarital sex. Dated my future wife for 4+ years, while attending college at a VERY public university campus, and was still able to be married a virgin to a virgin. Not an easy thing to do in the times I live in, but still very doable. It really is a viable alternative to obtaining STD's and becoming pregnant before you want to; (and other things I will not get into at this time.) My wife and I always held the belief that Elisabeth Elliott was right when she said in her book Passion and Purity, "whatever is held until after marriage will be that much better when you are married." Having known that little bit of information about me, do you think it's weird that I find this article very easy to believe. In fact, I find it to be about perfect in my experiences with people.

Snowman Humor

This Christmas I noticed a snow globe at my parent's house in Oklahoma. It's a snowman warming his hands over a campfire. This is disturbing, isn't it? Would it be wrong to call such a snowman slightly suicidal?I found some other such snowmen online, pictures posted below.

Christmas Movie Madness
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Had a great Christmas trip to Oklahoma to spend some time with the family. While I was with family, I was afforded something I rarely get here in Dallas... Free Babysitting. As a result I was able to see three movies this week, and all of them at the theatre no less. If you have children, and live in a city with relatives to watch your kids at various times, then you can NOT relate to my frustration. I have three kids, and paying a babysitter for 3-4 hours so my wife and I can go out is sometimes more expensive than the dinner and the movie. So I enjoyed the presence of grandparents and got away a few times to watch some movies. Some Random Movie Thoughts:When did movies start charging $9.00 a ticket? Am I that old? $9.00 is CRAZY!Is there anything more annoying that sitting by Jr.High students during a movie? I'm sure I was the same way when I was 14, but geesh! Is it unrealistic that if I go to see a movie that is listed as starting at 10:30pm, that I should expect it to start

Dallas Stars vs. LittlePastor
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Last night I went to a Dallas Stars hockey game. I'm a big sports fan, and was real excited about attending the game. The tickets were given to me by someone who attends our church, and they were GREAT tickets, somewhere over the $200 face value for each ticket. In other words, they were not the variety of ticket that the LittlePastor would fork money over for. These were a real gift! They gave me 4 tickets so I took my wife, and another couple to the game.We had a great dinner near the American Airlines Center at RJ's Mexican Cuisine. (I mean a really, really great dinner; I highly recommend to my Dallas readers.) Then headed over to the Platinum Club in the AAC for the game. When we arrived at our seats, the adventure really began. Someone was sitting in our seats, and I waited for the usher to kindly help them find their correct seats. Seems that was where the trouble began. See these people in my seats, actually had the same tickets I did. Seemed that they bought the

Sweating in the Spirit
1970-01-01 00:59:59
This video scores high on the 'Unintentional Humor Scale.' It's almost like a SNL skit making fun of Christians, but it's REAL!Leave it to some Christians to try turning a buck by combining aerobics and worship. From this item's marketing info:"When Sweating in the Spirit, you are not focused on the typical thoughts of calories burned, toning your thighs or the screaming thought of "when does this workout end,"...quite the opposite. Sweating in the Spirit ushers you into a time of dance and praise before God. Our body is on loan to us...and Sweating in the Spirit is a step towards honoring and taking better care of our bodies--our temples."

Enter the Year 2007
1970-01-01 00:59:59
One of my favorite songs from college was from Enter the Worship Circle, it's called "I Will Not Forget You." The songs starts with these words: Many men will drink the rainAnd turn to thank the cloudsMany men will hear You speakBut they will never turn aroundAs I look back on 2006 I can't help but feel blessed. I give all credit to whom credit is due. To count some blessings I would say that my family survived another year, I'm still living in my house, I still have my job, and I still mostly enjoy what I'm doing with my life. However, entering 2007 I feel a HUGE desire to be more relevant than I was last year. There is such a trap in doing what I do at a church, to just keep doing the same things over and over and over. I personally hate the idea of doing the things I was doing just because they were once upon a time done that way. I have the burning desire to step outside the box and do something I've never done, or to at least do something in a way I've never done it. Don'

NYC Heroes
1970-01-01 00:59:59
One of those stories that makes you realize that not everyone is a creep in this world. There are still heroes in the world, real life heroes.Rescuer pins fallen teenager, as subway passes over themNEW YORK (AP) -- Wesley Autrey faced a harrowing choice, as he tried to rescue a teenager who had fallen off a platform onto a subway track in front of an approaching train: Struggle to hoist him back up to the platform in time, or take a chance on finding safety under the train. At first, he tried to pull the young man up, but he was afraid he wouldn't make it in time and they would both be killed. "So I just chose to dive on top of him and pin him down," he said. (Watch how shallow the rut is.)

The Anti-Ford
1970-01-01 00:59:59
A little over 2 years ago I take in my Ford Windstar for a service special on an oil change and tire rotation at my local Ford Dealership. Now normally I avoid dealerships with a ten foot pole, but it was a good deal; and I decided to do it. When I did this I was told that the battery needed replacing and I grudgingly agreed to get a 'Ford' battery for the van.Usually I buy one at Walmart or Autozone and just install it myself. And if they battery dies during the exchange period, I take it in and do an exchange. I've done the process a few dozen times in my life, and it usually takes no more than 10 minutes.Well this week my battery in the van begins to not hold a charge. I KNOW the battery is dying if not already dead. I take it to the dealership to see about getting my new battery since it falls within the time frame for a free replacement exchange. Long, Long, Long story short... I had to make an appointment, and I sat at Ford dealership from 715am to 915am this morning.

Where's the News?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
So I'm watching the local news tonight, WFAA Channel 8 in Dallas, TX. They have a new studio, and they're showing off all the bells and whistles. Then I see that the backdrop for one of the desks actually looks over at an adjacent apartment complex. What is up with that? Why is that appealing? Aren't they supposed to have city skylines or something of that nature? It's like apartment balconies are the iconic image of Dallas/Ft.Worth, and they're giving it to us a backdrop.Of course, I also pondered how long it would take for the residents in those apartments to realize they're on TV 10 times a day? And that begs the question, how long until someone is nude on the balcony? Or how long until someone hangs a "I Hate Dale Hanson!" sign on the balcony? (That's a little inside DFW joke..)

In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I picked up In A Pit with a Lion on a Snow Day when it came out late last year, but finally got around to finishing it last week. This book is superb! I am an avid follower of Mark Batterson's blog, Evotional.com. Mark is the senior pastor of National Community Church (AKA Theater Church) in Washington D.C. In a Pit with a Lion is challenging, yet brings you along easily and slowly. Mark makes this statement at the beginning and it basically sums up the entire book, "As I look back on my own life, I recognize this simple truth: Thegreatest opportunities were the scariest lions. Part of me has wanted to play it safe, but I've learned that taking no risks is the greatest risk of all." I'm as guilty as the next guy at finding the safe thing to do, in spite of what God may be leading me to do. This book really kicked my butt on a few things. If there was no risk in doing things for God, why would we need faith? Basically I need faith to help me get through the risky things God h

Typewriter Danger
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Abandoned typewriter at Wal-Mart creates bomb scareThe world is becoming a scary place, when bomb squads are called in to deal with scary looking typewriter cases. It frustrates me to no end when I think of how much money was spent to eliminate the threat of this typewriter. I am actually old enough to have taken a typewriter class in Jr.High. I'll never forget the joy of correction tape and carbon paper. And come to think of it, I can't remember when I last saw one of these dinosaurs.

In The Land of the Stupid
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Have you heard about this?AT&T set to launch rebranding campaign next week for Cingular switch to AT&TI am a Cingular customer that at one time was an ATT Wireless customer. For the past 2 years I have had to deal with the change to Cingular. I had to change my account to Cingular accounts, I eventually had to get Cingular branded phones to work with my 'new' Cingular account, and I have seen ATT Wireless become a distant memory. In fact, even the ATT Wireless stores in my area, have transitioned from blue ATT logos to orange Cingular logos. I know this happens everyday so I try and just pretend it doesn't matter what the name of my wireless carrier is.Then this happens! Does this make any freaking sense? Only 4 months ago the ATT Wireless store in my area completely renovated their space and transitioned to Cingular. And now it all begins back again? I don't really care, but it seems utterly absurd. Where are the people that stand up in a board meeting and say, "Hey f

What's at Risk?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I have a friend who is moving his entire family to Brazil at the end of this month. He's finally realizing a dream to serve on the mission field in Brazil. It's been a tough few months for him. He's quit his 'good' ministry job, and the salary that came with it; he's sold his house, and most all it's furnishings; he's pulled his kids out of school and prepared for home schooling; he's traveled many miles over the past few months trying to raise monthly support to provide for his mission; and he's fought with the paperwork required to make such a move. I serve on his advisory board, and I also financially support his ministry (on a very, very small level).I've always wondered if I would be willing to step out like this, and really depend on God to help provide for my family. How far away would I go in obedience to God? I've come to a place, quite recently, where I'm willing to risk whatever it takes to put myself squarely in God's will for my life; but I've ran in
