Dylan Joel 1970-01-01 00:59:59 I am the father of 3 glorious children; Ryan Daniel is 4 years old, Dylan
Joel is 3 years old, and my only daughter, Lauryn Grace is 1 year old. Today is Dylan's 3rd Birthday.Tribute to Dylan's 3rd yearDylan is the kind of kid who brings new meaning to the phrase, "painfully shy." I think sometimes it literally hurts him to gather attention of any kind. Have you seen a kid run and hide under the table while his friends sing 'Happy Birthday'? While his siblings seem to light up in the spotlight, Dylan would much rather go unnoticed. Now don't confuse shyness with fear. Dylan rarely exhibits fear in the face of bugs, dogs, or jumping from high places. In his three years of living, he has carved out a great existence living in the background of those around him. But it is this trait, that makes him so special. It's impossible to get Dylan to enjoy doing anything, when he can't do it with his big brother or little sister. If Dad ever tries to take him out for ice cream all b

Post Halloween Thoughts 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Last night, we had our Annual Fall LIGHT Festival at the church; I'm the one who organizes the event each year. It's a totally free event for the neighborhood, here in SouthEast Dallas. It's designed to be a safe, secure place for families in our area to bring their kiddos for candy, games, and carnival-type rides. In Southeast Dallas, there really aren't a lot of safe places to take kids anymore, so it's very, very popular. I guestimate that we had over 2,500 people spin through in 3 hours. It really was a great, great event. In other Halloween
related news, my next door neighbor has a fake corpse hanging from her trees, and a few fake decapitated heads on her front porch. This year she setup a table, and had saws and various knives stuck into the fake body. It's actually quite disgusting, and repulsive; but I know she would find this to be a compliment. I find it hard to explain such a thing to my children, so I try and divert their attention from the horror display. Th

Allegations and Resignations 1970-01-01 00:59:59 I don't know how many of you have heard of the allegations against Pastor Ted Haggard, pastor of New Life Church in Colorado Springs, CO; but they are pretty serious. Apparently he's been accused of paying for gay sex with a man in Denver over the past 3 years. In response to the allegations, Ted Haggard has stepped down from his position with New Life, and the NEA, to let an investigation start into his guilt or innocence.CNN.com ReportsTed Haggard responding to allegations *VIDEO*Editorial piece on the coverage of these sexual chargesLocal coverage from the Colorado Springs GazetteHere are my thoughts:I've read all of Ted Haggard's books, including 'The Life-Giving Church', which lays out the bylaws and governing laws of the church. I know that him stepping down when accusations have been made, are a part of New Life Church's structure. And the laws are there to protect the church from the allegations.Doesn't stepping down, create in impression of guilt on behalf of Ted Read more:Allegations

The Haggard Truth 1970-01-01 00:59:59 In college I read a book that changed my life, Ordering Your Private World by Gordon MacDonald. This book revolutionized the way I studied, slept, and spent my waking hours. In the book he speaks about sinkholes, where something is built up on a foundation that is empty; It translated into a great spiritual principle. However, years after the book was published, Gordon MacDonald would fall into sexual sin, and commit adultery on his wife. He later wrote a book, called Rebuilding Your Broken World. He went on to step down from pastoral care, but eventually met some forms of restoration as the years passed by. I say all this to reference an article he wrote regarding Ted Haggard
. It's a wonderful article, by a man who has seen some of the same sufferings.Article -The Haggard Truth

Mere Christianity 1970-01-01 00:59:59 A few days ago, someone asked me what my favorite book was. More specifically they asked me which book I had read that had had the most profound impact on my life. My answer to this question was simple, yet hard all at the same time. I'm often really, really into the book that I'm currently reading; and this makes it hard for me to look back with much perspective on what I read years ago. However, I had to say that the book that had the most profound influence on my meager existence was Mere Christianity
, by C.S. Lewis.I know that this book is considered a classic by many Christians, and I can't say that I fully accept 100% of C.S. Lewis' philosophies and thoughts; but this book is superb. I've heard of numerous people coming to an intellectual understanding of Christianity after reading this book.I myself read it after having been involved in collegiate campus ministry for a couple of years. I had just graduated from college, and had gotten married a month after graduation.
Falling Down 1970-01-01 00:59:59 For those of you unaware from previous post, I started a running program about 11 weeks ago. The program was the Couch-to-5k program from Coolrunnings.com. It is a great program that slowly moves you from inactivity to running 3 miles a day, 3 days a week, in only 9 weeks. Well I'm into the 3rd week of running 3 miles a day, 3 days a week.Anyways, I brag on myself to say that today my worst fears have been realized. In the last two minutes of my run, I had a complete wipe-out. I bit the dust! While trying to maneuver an intersection and some rough driveway pavement, I completely lost control and hit the ground. I landed on my palms, and my hip; and completed two rolls into someones front yard. There was a old lady at the intersection who saw the whole thing, and she just looked on in horror. Of course, being a man, I quickly got up and continued running like I was being chased by snipers. It wasn't until I got home that I started to feel the pain of my fall. I'm hurting a Read more:Falling Down
Boring Ministerspeak 1970-01-01 00:59:59 I recently saw a post on one of my favorite link blogs, BagofNothing.com.BON linked to an article on TheChurchReport.com that was originally published in Facts & Trends (published bimonthly by LifeWay Christian Resources.) The article is a summation of the data from a recent survey taken by ministers and laity within the 'church.' ARTICLENew research shows that Protestant ministers tend to be less informed about popular culture (magazine, TV, video games, music, etc.) than are the people to whom they are ministering. This survey exposes the fine line between being immersed in a popular culture that runs contrary to biblical truths; with avoiding this popular culture at all costs. There are definitely two extremes on this topic. Many without ties to a 'church' must be confused as to why this even matters, so let me explain the problem. If I try and encourage my congregation every week to live a demonstrative life of God's goodness while trying to abstain from the things of this

The Movie Spoiler 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Don't have a lot of time today, but I wanted to post a link regarding the topic from yesterday about how a minister keeps up on popular culture. I forgot to let you know about the greatest movie source I've ever found.THE Movie Spoiler
This website is the best! It is full of semi-detailed transcripts from all of the most popular movies in the theathres. Some of the spoilers can be graphic in their writing, but it does allow you to see what a movie is about without having to go expose your eyes to such terrible things. Sometimes it's just fun to read what everyone is talking about, without having to go pay money for a movie I really don't care anything about. Anyways....
The Moving Religion 1970-01-01 00:59:59 DISCLAIMER: This posting and link is fascinating for believers and atheists alike.I often times link to articles by John Piper, and today I wanted to share one I read yesterday.Unexpected Blows to Fatalistic ThinkingJohn Piper explores the writings of Philip Jenkins, of the University of Pennsylvania, and his book The Next Christendom: The Coming of Global Christianity. It's a very interesting read into how the 'location' of Christianity is changing. For centuries Christianity has found it's center in Europe and North America, but things are changing and it is widely becoming an African and South American center. Very Interesting idea for sure...Who would have thought that the most powerful influences for sane doctrinal faithfulness in the global Anglican Communion would come not from the evangelical resurgence of British evangelicals (as wonderful as that is), but from African bishops who regard so-called gay marriage (for example) as the oxymoron that it is? Who would have thou Read more:Moving

The Moment 1970-01-01 00:59:59 We all have those moments that forever alter our existence. For some it's the time they discovered that mixing hot water with cold water creates warm water, while for others it might be that winning lottery ticket. I have a moment that would change EVERYTHING about my life from that moment forward. On November 20, 1993 I was a 17-year old Senior in high school, and I had a very important date with an interesting 15-year old Sophomore girl I had met weeks earlier. This date was like many dates kids have in high school; it consisted of a terrible movie, a lame dinner, and holding hands in the mall. But unlike most other high school dates, I still wake up next to my date these 13 years later. I know, I know, many of my readers cringe at the thought of being married to a girl you dated in High School, but I can guarantee you that this high school girl was very different. To summarize my first date in as few words as possible let me throw out some facts from this date:I commented to thi Read more:Moment
Happy Thanksgivings 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Stumbled across an interesting article today. It's a great Thanksgiving read...Who Will Save Thanksgiving?Wal-Mart announced this week they will return the word "Christmas" to their seasonal greetings. Good move, especially given their faithful hick-hop constituency. No more generic salutations that so many of us carped about last year, when many merchants dropped Christ from his own holy day so as not to offend non-believers. We still have a way to go. The nearby nursery is advertising "Holiday Trees" and the local school is staging a "Winter Pageant" with small children singing, "We wish you a Merry Sparkle Season!" But before we restart the campaign to reChristianize Christmas, would someone please save Thanksgiving? Read more:Happy
Christmas in November 1970-01-01 00:59:59 I got the Christmas
things out again this year. I haven't yet done the outside lights, but they'll go up soon enough. My boys are 4 and 3, and I think putting up the tree is the highlight of their year. This morning, my wife had to stay home from church with the kids, (due to coughing and fevers spreading throughout our house), so I'm guessing that while I was gone they talked about what would happen when Daddy got home from church. So am I greeted with hugs and kisses, and greetings of love? NO! I'm greeted with the squeals of toddlers and preschoolers who desperately want to put up a lighted tree in the living room. I guess Daddy is the only one with strong enough muscles to move the pre-lit fabricated tree out of storage?I stumble out to get the tree box, and bring in the Rubbermaid containers filled with the Christmas things. We very quickly connect the tree together, and I plug it in. I think my 3 year old might have wet himself with excitement, at this lighted tree. Read more:November

Questions for Daddy 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Sitting at dinner last week, my 4-year old son Ryan asked me a few questions. Now, Ryan asks lots of questions, and most of the time I have easy answers for him. This particular night at dinner he asked me,"Daddy
, what do God and Jesus look like?" Good question, but there isn't a real easy answer. I talked to him about faith, and believing in something that you can't see with your own eyes. He understood, I think, and I thought it was a good conversation, considering he's only 4. But then he asked me the strangest question I've ever been asked."Daddy, do Jesus and God wear the same shirt?"
My Neenaw 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Because I could not stop for Death,He kindly stopped for me.The Carriage held but just ourselvesAnd Immortality~Emily DickinsonThis Saturday morning by grandmother died. It feels funny to call her my 'grandmother' because really she was my Neenaw. I don't know where this particular grandmotherly name came from, but from the youngest of age I was told to refer to her as my Neenaw. In fact seeing it in typed format, makes me question it's spelling. I last saw my Neenaw at my wedding in 1998. If I remember it correctly, I didn't know she was coming and it was a surprise. You might ask yourself, Why haven't you seen your grandmother for over 8 years? It's complicated really, my Neenaw has had a variation of dementia and Alzheimer's for quite some time now. I have wanted to see her, but the disease kind of took over quicker than anyone thought, and she lived so very, very far away, that I was never able to see her after she left Austin, TX. Back in the Saddle 1970-01-01 00:59:59 Had a trip to San Antonio, TX this week for the funeral of my grandmother. I've been to San Antonio many times, and it's one of my favorite cities to visit. However, on this trip we didn't get to do any of the many things you can do in San Antonio. No evening walks on the river walk, no great Mexican Restaurants, and no visit to the Alamo. I was only in San Antonio for about 24 hours, and it kinda felt like I just had a long layover. It was good to catch up with family from all over, and weird to think that we don't get together more often. Isn't it sad that sometimes death is the only thing that brings us together?
