Here’s a cool little site where you can make your own tartan patterns, so if you are a little tired of stripes give this one a go! I had a quick play and found it really easy to use, I created one called “Pretty In Pink” which is now in the gallery. I thought I’d keep with my colour of the moment! Go take a look, I’m sure you’ll have some fun as they say “Tartan Maker” - is “the new trendsetting application for cool designers.” Share This

Retro Poster Print
2007-07-28 07:18:42
This tutorial will teach you how to add a strong poster type effect to your images. We will then play with adding a dot pattern to create an interesting mosaic effect. 1: Open your original image and duplicate the layer. Layer > Duplicate Layer. 2: Fill your first layer (background) with a colour of your choice. I chose a bright red: E32B35 3: Next go to your duplicated layer and get rid of the background by using the magnetic lasso tool and eraser. 4: Desaturate the layer. Image > Adjustments > Desaturate. 5: Next we want to get rid of al of the half tones. Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast. Play with the slider until you get your desired effect. 6: That’s basically it but I painted the lips and gave some highlights to the eyes, head and chin using a purple colour: 7B358B The idea is to give it a strong and dynamic appeal, so make sure you use bright contrasting colours. Still with me? For the next part of our tutorial we will create the dot pattern. 1: Open a new docum

Create Your Simspons Character
2007-08-01 06:03:59
Just a quick entry for today but a good one! I took a visit over to Simspon’s Movie to check out their site when I came across a link to “create your own avatar”. After a bit of playing around here’s me as a Simpsons character! Cool Hey? Once you’ve created your avatar using their software there is also another link where you can upload a picture of yourself and you get simpsonized!! I think that it is an absolutely brilliant idea and I’m going to do a few more of my family and friends - hee hee! Their site is a delight to view, it’s really well designed and a joy to visit. There’s plenty to see and do here and I loved the loading button which is a huge donut. So if you have a few spare minutes and need a giggle go visit! Share This

Mollie Goes Dotty
2007-07-31 07:18:46
Here’s a Photoshop experiment using my dot pattern technique . If you click on the picture you can see an enlarged version. I built up the picture using layers and blending modes. The effect used on Mollie was simply a filter called “cutout” which you can find under Filter > Artistic > Cutout. The typeface I used for the word “Mollie” is called Sidewalk which you can download from DaFont. I then finished the piece with some brush effects to give a distressed grunge effect. I thought that I would include my layers palette so that you can see how I have built up the layers. Why not have a go? This technique is very useful and I am quite sure that you can come up with some interesting results! Remember to experiment with your blending modes. I have used “soft light” for this piece but there are so many ways in which you can manipulate your image, now’s the time to get creative! Share This

Go Media Vector Pack Set 7
2007-08-13 07:52:20
I’m pleased to announce that it looks like the folks over at Go Media have done it again, coming up with a new vector pack collection. In this new collection you get nearly 300 high quality and detailed vector pieces. If you buy all at once, you save a ton! You are getting a $105 value for only $52 bucks! Included in the set are Ornate, War, Stains, Hair, Scrolls, Stars & Hearts, and Horror. Alternatively packs are available individually for only $14.99 each. I think that they look like great, and are definitely going to make a difference to any illustrators arsenal. I particularly like the ornate pack, here’s what they have to say: “Ornate is one of our best vector packs we’ve ever produced, featuring some of the most detailed and original ornamental design work that you can find online. With the popularity of ornamental design these days, it’s surprising how hard it is to find quality ornate vector graphics that are authentic and original. We ha

Banksy Mania
2007-08-19 10:20:59
It seems that everywhere I look nowadays I come across images from graffiti artist, Banksy, he seems to be all the rage and good luck to him too! I became aware of him quite a few years ago when a friend of mine discovered his work after moving to Bristol. At the time I didn’t quite get it, ok the work was interesting but I missed the point! Now I appreciate his work and the way in which he views life. His work has developed so well and his pieces are now sold for lots and lots of money. So to all of my friends who bought an original piece back then, I’d like to say well done and damn why didn’t I! If you are interested in looking at Banksy’s art in more depth I highly recommend getting a copy of his book, Wall and Piece. Here’s a short extract about the artist: (more…) Share This

Win a free, autographed copy of Betrayal at the Bay of Pigs by G. Lynch
2007-08-16 14:49:56
I thought that I would bring to your attention another great book competition which is now on at War of Wits Publishing Ltd. This month’s competition is to win a free autographed copy of Decision for Disaster; Betrayal at the Bay of Pigs, by Grayston L. Lynch . Also included is a free baseball cap. All you have to do is answer five questions which can be found throughout their website. It is a great competition, free to enter and if you win you will be the owner of an excellent book. This is not an advertisement! It is a site that I have designed for authors Karen & Grayston Lynch and I’m doing my bit to promote their works… also if you love Andalusian horses, I’d recommend a visit too! - Visit Site Decision for Disaster; Betrayal at the Bay of Pigs by Grayston L. Frank Kozik
2007-08-21 13:35:52
I have recently looking at poster designs for inspiration for a new design project and have been avidly scouring through my reference material for retro effects, vibrant colours and bold typographic styles, when, much to my delight I was shown the work of Frank Kozik which was emblazoned across a friend’s tshirt, it was so great to hear somebody talk so affectionately about an artist’s work that I went to check him out a little more. I particularly like the vibrancy and retro feel that he gives to his work, with strong typography and a touch of anarchy who can go wrong! I think that I will shortly do a Photoshop tutorial in the style of Kozik, looks like fun! Kozik was born in Madrid, Spain in 1962 . At the age of 14 he moved to the United States and settled in Austin, Texas. Credited with single handedly reviving the “lost” art of the concert poster, Frank’s creative career grew largely out of his enthusiasm for Austin’s growing underground rock sc

Icon Finder
2007-08-28 14:23:45
Here’s a handy little site that I think is useful to add to your bookmarks if you are a web designer, it is called Iconfinder. It does exactly what it says…. finds the icon of your choice. The site is simply designed and straight to the point, add your search query, click and wait for the results. I’ve already added it to my bookmarks, although I don’t really use a lot of web icons. If I do, I design them myself but for buttons such as arrows and page links etc, I think it’s very useful. All icons are licensed with either Creative Commons, GPL, or LGPL. Below is a screenshot for “home” icons. So, if you like icons I’d recommend a visit! Share This

Breast Cancer Awareness
2007-08-31 07:50:06
I have just been checking out the latest news on DeviantArt and came across an important post that I would like to bring to your attention. DeviantArt member, Moonbeam13 has written an article about breast cancer awareness, she has been involved in supporting and raising money for The Weekend To End Breast Cancer event in Toronto. She has done this in a fairly quiet and discreet way so we felt it was time to shed a bit more light on what exactly she does for this great cause. To give a bit of background, in the past 4 years this organization has raised over 60 million dollars in donations and through this has made some landmark strides in advancing the research on breast cancer, which claims the lives of close to 50,000 women a year and about a quarter million women diagnosed per year. This money does make a big difference in helping with in depth gene studies and creating specialized programs for people diagnosed with the disease. The Weekend To End Breast Cancer takes place all acro
