YouTube strikes video deal with EMI, DaisyMedia does All Things Digital and Zune Sales Soar
2007-06-01 09:02:03
Starting with video this week, and the news that YouTube users will be allowed to access EMI music videos after the two companies signed a deal.. The music group and the video sharing site are going to work together on ways to enable users to incorporate EMI clips into their own content. This means that now all of the major record labels have agreed to work with YouTube as opposed to against it. They can cash in by sharing the revenue generated by the music videos that are shown. As we’ve discussed before, YouTube and Google are facing a series of lawsuits from other companies who are accusing the site of violating their copyright. Onto gadgets next, and at the ‘D: All Things Digital Conference’ in California this week, Microsoft revealed its new toy – the Microsoft Surface. This can turn an ordinary table top into the computer display, and will be sensitive to objects placed on top of it. This means your hands could control picture search, music and maps. Microsoft says it’l

Google Adsense launches video advertising pilot.
2007-05-26 07:11:03
Google’s Adsense has launched a pilot to stream video ads in online video content. It won’t pop up everywhere quite yet though so we won’t be inundated with ads. It’s a pilot with a small group of publishers, and the publishers will control when the ads play in their videos. Adsense say it’s ‘looking forward to gathering learnings from this pilot and gaining and insight into what works best for ads in video’. They also reckon the pilot is good for publishers who want to get cash from their video content, and for admen who want access to quality video. The test doesn’t include YouTube or Google video clips, and they won’t tell us which publishers are involved. But there’s a lot of money to be made here. Businessweek.com reports research claiming the market for online video ads in the US could reach $3 billion dollars by 2010. Sticking with video content, and research out this week suggests more than 50 percent of people are interested in mobile TV – as long as the

Google launches podcast, and Paul McCartney ready to put back catalogue on line
2007-05-16 09:43:01
Right, let’s get this week’s iphone news out of the way first. Another leaked document from AT&T apparently claims there’ll be no pre-sales, in the states at least, so bad news if you were hoping to show off to your friends by getting one ahead of everyone else. Apple’s said it eventually wants to sell 10 million, so hopefully you’ll get one in the end. Meanwhile, phone rival Nokia’s welcomed the iphone to the market – saying it’ll boost consumer appetite for more expensive models- though the firm is quick to point out they’ve been in the multi media handset market for a while. Nokia CFO Rick Simonson has said ‘Don’t get me wrong, they will bring some things to the table…but we have been investing in the area for some time’. Still with Apple, and reports this week claim that the ipod is still losing market share – dropping below 70 percent for the first time in a year. Creative, who recently launched their Zen stone (see last week’s blog), increased t

iPod Competitor, Untapped Podcast Market, and Lonely Planet Launches TV clip site
2007-05-10 03:17:31
Daisy can barely keep up with rumours and surveys, as Iphone fever continues to mount this week. The speculated June launch date looks to be spot on, if a leaked email from network provider AT&T is to be believed. It encourages staff not to take leave between June 15th and July 15th because of the iphone launch. It’s heading to Europe in the autumn. And as for how many of us will buy it – well that depends who you ask. One survey reckons demand will be so great that Apple should have no problem reaching their targets; another study of 1,300 people suggests two thirds indicated there’s no chance they’d buy one. However, one analyst with a Wall Street investment bank reckons 17 million will be sold in 2008 - which will make Apple’s Steve Jobs happy – he predicted 10 million sales in the first year. New products out this week to help you listen to your Daisy podcasts include a rival to the ipod shuffle from Creative.. They’ve unveiled the Zen Stone. It comes in

iPhone release date confirmed and Apple’s DRM-free music questioned
2007-06-08 05:36:04
Starting this week with the iPhone , because well, we have to really – the release date in the US has been confirmed as June 29th. That should stop all the rumours now and hopefully we won’t have to mention the release date every week any more! It’s thought that three million of the things will be ready for sale on the launch day – and analysts believe Apple will sell that many by the end of the year. (more…)

Last time on this blog, Daisy Media had a look at the advantages of podcasting for business and the effect it has a marketing tool. However, it stands to reason that all of our advice could be for nothing, if your podcast isn’t up to scratch. So we thought we’d have a chat about what makes a good podcast. More podcast production tips from Daisy Media
2007-07-13 15:58:35
Daisymedia’s spent the last few weeks talking about your podcasts, why it’s worth having them, and how to make them good. Now we’re taking it one step further, and throwing adverts into the mix. You can pop these into your podcast as sponsorship to bring in a bit of cash, or you could have an in-house advert to give your message an extra push. Don’t forget, millions of people a week are expected to be listening to podcasts by the end of the decade, so the potential for reaching an audience is huge. (more…)

Illegal downloads hit all time high, iTunes sells 3 billion songs
2007-08-09 10:18:46
Time for the latest catch up in the world of digital media. Daisy Media’s been away for a while, so we’ve got a slightly longer summary than normal. If you’ve got anything you’d like us to cover next time, email us at info@daisymedia.co.uk So first things first, some figures on the use of music downloads. The good news is that mobile phone downloading is up a touch, but the bad news for music companies and podcasters is that illegal downloading is at an all time high. This is all according to a new report from Entertainment Media Research which actually suggests that legal downloading is increasing as well. However, It shows consumers aren’t seeing legal action as much of a threat - 43 percent of 1700 people questioned said they’d illegally downloaded tracks, yet only a third say prosecution puts them off, as opposed to 42 percent in last year. The researchers believe cost has something to do with it – as CD prices are falling on the high street. (more…)

BBC launch on demand TV, Skype suffers outage and the future of Podcasting
2007-08-24 06:41:26
Just a few weeks ago tour blog was dominated by the iPhone, now it’s the iPlayer that’s making the headlines. We’re talking about the BBC’s on demand TV service which will enable internet users to watch programmes within seven days of broadcast, and it’s free. It’s a great idea, and should be a fantastic resource, but it’s currently only compatible with Windows XP users, which has left some people frustrated. Well, when we say some, we mean at least 16,000..because that’s how many have signed an e-petition protesting about the rollout of the service. They want the BBC to develop the system for non-windows platforms, and argues that the current format excludes certain people, therefore goes against the corporation’s ethos. The deadline for signing the petition passed at the beginning of this week, and now the campaigners are waiting for a government response. (more…)

2007-09-10 04:45:05

iPhone exclusive to O2, Microsoft loses EC Appeal
2007-10-17 02:20:04
Those of you hoping to buy an iPhone will find yourselves on the O2 network in November. The wireless carrier has been revealed as the exclusive UK carrier for the phone when it comes here on November the 9th. CEO of O2 UK Matthew said. “The iPhone is a breakthrough that is changing the way people use their mobiles forever, and we’re thrilled to have it exclusively for O2 customers in the UK.” Apple says UK users of their phone will be able to activate their new gadgets using iTunes software on a PC or a Mac. So, how much? The 8BG model will be £269, and will be available through Apple stores, O2 stores, and that stalwart, Carphone Warehouse. The phone tariffs will start at £35. However, users will have to sign up to an 18 month contract with O2. If you’re on another network – you should be able to keep your number, so that saves a bit of hassle at least. Here at Daisy Media we look forward to hearing what you think about it. (more…)

Daisy Media goes local, Amazon takes on iTunes
2007-10-26 12:09:14
Got a favourite clothes shop, bar or restaurant? Share your local knowledge  http://www.backofmyhand.com Apple seems to have been coming under fire from a number of quarters over the last few weeks. Universal Music looks like it might be preparing a service to rival iTunes , and meanwhile, Amazon ’s already got off with blocks with a new DRM-free catalogue. We’ll look at Universal first. Reports are suggesting that the music giant is hoping to start its own subscription service. It’s well known that Universal isn’t too chuffed with Apple; last month John Bernard Levy, the chief executive of Vivendi which owns Universal, called Apple’s revenue sharing terms “indecent”. Now it looks like the company is putting its money where its mouth is. Businessweek claims Universal is aiming to join forces with other companies to launch an industry owned subscription service. It’s thought Sony BMG is already on board as a potential partner, and Warner is the next targe
