Angel Oak – Simply one of the most amazing trees in the world. It’s close to being the most amazing tree of the trip. I suppose it’s tied with the Red Woods. It’s just a different kind of amazing. It’s not very tall, but the limbs fork out in every direction and could cover a mansion. You could build a lot more than a tree house there, more like a tree mansion, or castle, whichever is more your style. Matt – Part of the trip is that sometimes I just don’t have enough time. Matt would be one of those times, because he deserves way more than just a paragraph. But it was a good couple of hours. Matt’s name was passed onto me last summer from an article in the Detroit Free Press. At 26, he lives a pretty good life. He lives on a 41’ sailboat. Unfortunately we didn’t have enough time to go sailing as my last name so deserves. He had just gotten back from a business trip to the UK and headed out to LA the next day as he’s about to move out that way. After a quick t

Young Professionals and I
2007-05-26 10:13:54
One evening I headed with Mark and Lindsay to a nice gathering for the Young Professionals of Charleston. I’ve been to a couple of these appetizer and small chat gatherings before. And even though I wasn’t dressed the part, I knew my story could make up for the rest. On the way in I dropped my card into the pail for a chance to win a door prize. Now I never win things. I can’t even count how many free lunch drawings I’ve put my card in. Well, sure enough, the last prize of the drawing and they call out “Hometown Invasion” with a great tone of confusion. Of course it’s the only brightly colored card in this mess of white ones. I was kind of shy and embarrassed to claim my prize, especially as a guest who isn’t even a member. I probably didn’t deserve it. But wait! This is an INVASION! So I should walk in underdressed and win what I win. Ha ha. So four of us headed to the Boat House restaurant on East Bay in downtown and enjoyed a great dinner of sushi and fish (I

Folly Beach
2007-05-25 17:32:03
Of the several beaches in the area, Folly Beach is the more youthful of them. The first time around I found myself there with Mark and Lindsay. The next time around it was just the guys, Mark, AJ, and myself. Folly Beach isn’t the most glamorous of beaches I’ve seen on the trip. There have been a lot of beaches, Long Beach, Canon Beach, Santa Cruz, Waikiki, North Shore, Biloxi, Panama City, St. Pete, Key West, South Beach, Tybee Beach, and even stopped at the beach along Lake Michigan way back on September 2nd when I first got started. I got my second sunburn of the trip, but thankfully it wasn’t as bad as the damage Panama City Beach had on me. Folly Beach Part II Have you ever watched a movie where you see someone in the movie lose their bathing suit at the beach? I think we’ve all seen comedies of some sort that have a scene like that. I think for most people, at least for me, we think, “How come I never actually see something like that happen?” I mean it never happen

Super Guy
2007-05-22 11:18:29
Connection after connection. Town after town. State after state. Week after week. Now that I’m in Charleston there is quite the connection, through a chain of people I have never met. For a couple months now I have been keeping in touch with Sean Aiken. Cool guy. Sean, from Canada, started a project called One Week Job. Each week Sean is starting a brand new job, from being a bungee operator, florist, volleyball coach, and much more Sean is having a lot of the same experience I am, and for a lot of the same reasons, we’re pretty much in the same boat on different seas. I’m not sure if I found Sean or Sean found me. But Sean put me in touch with Scotty and Fiddy. Scotty and Fiddy trumped my trip. Of course I recently met Amy who met all 50 governors when she was 12. Well, Scotty and Fiddy hitchhiked to all 50 state capitols in only 50 days. They dubbed their project Hitch 50. Taking a year I guess I’m a little slower than they are. But I did find Dishwasher Pete’s b

Two Ladies
2007-05-21 19:14:33
There were two people I was anxious to meet up with while in Asheville, which were two more great reasons to stop by. On Sunday, Jenna headed over from Pigeon Forge, TN. If you remember Jenna is who ultimately got me in touch with Rick who I stayed with in Asheville. So she came over and said hi to Rick as well. That worked out very well. And if you recall I spent time with Jenna and family and friends in Alabama. She came over for the day and we spent the better part of the day at the Biltmore Estate, the biggest house in the United States. Indeed, it is quite large, and rather pricey to attend. While I was there I kept making comparisons to the Hearst Castle in California and to the Palace of Versailles in France, which I saw when I was 18. And the most annoying thing as ever for a photographer is being told that I’m not allowed to take photos inside the estate. Quite frankly I think that’s a little ridiculous when I pay $42 to see the place. So they lost some big points

Welcome to Asheville
2007-05-21 10:18:16
If you look on the map of my route you can see that there is one area of the country where I have spent a whole lot of time. Almost two months prior I was on the other side of the mountain in Gatlinburg. However, it was a very worthwhile stop to come back and see Asheville for a few days. For three nights I stayed with Rick. Here is how this one worked. I stayed with Lauren in Birmingham. Lauren introduced me to Jenna. I ended up spending just one night with Jenna’s family. Jenna introduced me to her friend BP. BP called her nephew Rick in Asheville to ask if he’d be willing to host me. And a month later I made it. Rick is a single guy with a nice apartment that’s full of books. A lot of the books consist of nature, national parks, and wildlife. I picked up the Readers Digest book of most scenic drives in the country. I’ve hit a number of them now. We spent a long time discussing national parks and scenic areas of the country. After a career in the Coast Guard, Hawa

A City Without Peach Trees
2007-05-18 13:15:19
It truly is amazing how many different living styles there are among cities and towns that dot this country. Take New York City alone, there are thousands of different lifestyles in a single city. There are thousands of small towns across the country that differ from one another. It’s quite amazing to me. A person can choose such a wide variety of environments to raise a family, start a first job, or settle down for retirement. This week the road brought me to Peach tree City, a planned city that is only about 30 years old. As Joe was saying, it’s like Stepford; trophy homes and trophy wives. Joe and Dianne moved here from NYC, one of the most diverse places in the world. He gets a chuckle out of his kids being able to leave a bike on the street and it’s still there the next morning. Sure it’s great, but they admit it’s like living in a bubble. As for my short-term experience here, it’s fantastic! I’ve heard of golf cart communities before and have kind of shrugged t

It seems there I’ve heard here or there or maybe everywhere that Atlanta is one of the fastest growing cities in the country. Maybe it is, maybe it’s not. However, Atlanta to me is one of those cities that have a magical feel to it. Just say it with me, on three; one, two, three, ATLANTA! Some cities have it and some cities don’t, even though I haven’t been there before. I don’t know what it is, maybe it’s just the name or maybe it has to do something with hosting the Olympics, which is an awesome feat. While in Atlanta I spent most of my time wondering around Centennial Park in the heart of downtown. A small rain shower cleared away quite a few of the people afterwards. It was nice, a little hot and humid for my likings, but nice. People playing ultimate frisbee, kids playing in the Olympic fountain, and people were only drinking Coke, not Pepsi. Go figure. While the new Coke place was a week or more from opening I didn’t get to go. Though I went across the way to

Rambling Again

Plans change. And then they change again. In such a fashion that’s how I found myself back to Atlanta. Though it’s quite necessary. I have been looking at a list of the largest metro areas in the country. When it comes to just driving through I haven’t driven in almost every major city through the first 31 states. Impressive. And it’s good timing too as I caught just the end of a radio story that announced the rudest and most courteous cities in the country to drive in. Even with all my travels I really don’t think there is a big difference from state to state or coast to coast (actually, there aren’t many difference at all when it comes to people, we’re pretty much the same everywhere), but I did notice that a lot of people pulled out right in front of me when I was in Louisiana. Atlanta was short lived, but it was good. There are some people I would of liked to see, but didn’t get to. And there are lots of things I would have liked to see, but didn’t get to. Now t

Savannah

Oh sweet Savannah , order me some more pralines, preferably the dark chocolate ones. Delicious! Savannah was a good stop. My hosts were Sharon, Mel, Amber and Chris. In other cultures and centuries ago it was common for younger couples to live with other family members early on their marriage. In today’s culture it’s rare, very rare. Most people get married and flee off to their own place. Amber and Chris have been married for only a few weeks and are living with Amber’s grandparents Sharon and Mel. The connection in this instance is that Sharon’s sister is one of my mother’s best friends. I was staying with a few Yoopers! Mel was willing to share lots of stories from Vietnam and his time in the Air Force, which was quite fantastic to listen to. I enjoyed it, good stories! I was impressed with Chris’ knowledge of Savannah and his tour. It was one of the most knowledgeable tours of a town I have been given on short notice. What stood out was his age and living there

Two Pounds Per Month
2007-05-12 19:09:11
I am stuffed. For the millionth time in the last eight months I need to loosen my belt. Actually, I should probably just buy some new shorts, boxers, and jeans. They hardly fit anymore. I don’t know exactly what I weighed when I left eight months ago, I think it was around 175. And before all of this started I had some thoughts like, “Well, I’m on the road on my own for a year homeless and unemployed, I might get hungry at times.” Not the case. The last time I checked my weight it was around 190. Yup, I have a nice little belly going. That comes close to average almost two pounds of weight gain per month and it’s not slowing down. That’s a lot! But at this point of the trip I am now telling myself, “Forget it! I’ll just eat what I eat and worry about it when I get back home.” That’s going to be a pretty big task when I get back home. Back in Boise I just about gained two pounds in a single day. Well, I’m not hungry, I’m a pretty big boy now. And frankly I

Florida Finale at Disney
2007-05-11 20:56:54
Weeks later, although it feels like months, I am finally out of Florida . I looped around the entire state from Panama City to Tampa to Key West to Miami Beach to Celebration. Florida was an anticipated state with hosts and cities I’ve been excited to see. It was well lived. As Jason told me when I was in Tampa there really is a funnel effect. People from the Midwest head down on I-75 and end up on the west side of Florida while people from the Northeast head down I-95 and find themselves on the east side of the state. My last afternoon in Florida was spent at Disney World. The folks at Jeep should be happy to know that my Compass is having a great experience, such as parking in the largest parking in North America. Ahh Disney World, it’s said to be the happiest place in the world. I would have to disagree with that, and even at Disney World kids still cry. People are surprised to find out it was my first time there. I don’t remember having any desire to go there even as

Reading Inspiration
2007-05-10 11:23:28
Most of my morning was spent reading Amy’s book (check it out here). Hopefully I have permission to quote a couple sentences where she states (ha ha, states, that’s sort of funny if you know what I mean), “Journaling was the hardest job I had on the trip. Writing down everything that happened and my thoughts and feelings about them took a lot of time and energy…” Reading it made me feel a little guilty for not taking advantage of times to do some writing. I’m inspired to read this book and if I had the time would read through it in a day or two. It’s fantastic to compare the 50-state journeys of a 24 year old and that of a young family. Here I sit with Jonathan who as far as I know could be the youngest person to ever see all 50 states, he was 7 at the time. There are a million ways to travel to all 50 states. Scotty and Fiddy, who I have been corresponding with, recently wrapped up their Hitch 50 tour. What a trip, hitchhiking to all 50 state capitols in 50 days. So

Time to Celebrate
2007-05-08 22:36:35
This evening I made it to Celebration, FL. Another day, another town, another host, right? Not quite. This is a stop I have been hoping for and anticipating since day one of planning. So you may ask, what brings me to Celebration? Well, quite frankly I don’t need a reason to celebrate. Ok ok, the real reason is to stay with Kurt and Emily, who 12 years ago took their children to all 50 states in one year. Over a year ago I was chatting with my friend Beth about the plans for my trip. At that time I was searching for as much feedback as possible. Beth, from Traverse City, remembered another girl from high school, that girl was Amy. Not only was Amy the same age as me, but she also went to Michigan State. So I made a cold phone call and got in touch. While being home schooled (or road schooled?) Amy and her younger brother John were given a tour of a life time. At ages 12 and 7 they not only saw all 50 states and all 50 capitols, they were able to meet all 50 governors who

Miami Ad School
2007-05-07 22:46:09
At heart I’m still an advertising student. Even when I graduated I still wasn’t fully satisfied, I needed to learn more about advertising, work on my projects, pursuit more creativity, and all that jazz. Today’s plan may not have been smart, sorry to say that Jackie. Jackie gave me a great tour of the Miami Ad School this morning. You see, the reason it may not have been smart, is that it was torture. I was thrown into this building that’s bursting at the seams with talent and creativity. It’s a tease to spend just a day at the school. I’m ready to sign up, move in, and create! I am now full of inspiration to start new projects, create new ideas and dreams and make them happen. Which is a bit of a problem when I’ve still got to finish this one! I’m thinking I’ll work hard and keep different jobs every year. I don’t need to retire, maybe retire at 87 if I make it that long, that sounds like a good age. The Miami Ad School probably doesn’t even top 150 students h

2007-05-06 13:48:32
The women here are beautiful! I just thought I would let everyone know. So here I am in Miami Beach . Another stop in Florida. It’s becoming much like California where I spent way too long. I’m not complaining, but I’m not knocking down the states like I should be. I’ve been stuck at 31 for a while now. While in Miami Beach I am tracking down more advertising programs. Here I met up with Jan, a former advertising classmate at MSU. Now Jan is part way through his two years at the Miami Ad School. Since I arrived almost 24 hours ago most of our conversation has been about different ad campaigns, advertising agencies, and just different creative stuff in general. Since this trip is my life 24/7 I don’t get much time to work on creative little things for the sake of pleasure. I miss that! However, I’ll have all the inspiration I could imagine when I settle back down. Miami Beach! Wow what a place. We walked down Ocean Drive last night. The place is bumpin’ with

Key West Summary
2007-05-06 13:19:13
I am no longer moving east, west, or south. In the next couple months I will only be moving north as I make my way towards Maine. One stop in Key West was for a photo of miler market zero of Highway 1. Now that my first Key West experience is complete I’m still trying to understand that place! In terms of the most interesting people, people watching, character, weirdness, craziness, and anything else I think it’s 2nd to only Venice Beach of where I’ve been on my trip. It’s an eclectic place and I understand why writers head there for inspiration to clear writer’s block (although I hardly did any writing there). It’s an inspirational place with a unique vibe. Overall Key West probably has the most things to do of any town that size that I’ve visited and quite possibly the best restaurants. Here’s a big list of all the great places I was so fortunate to try: Upper Crust (great thin crust pizza) Haagen-Dazs (of course everyone has had this, but you can never have too muc

The Southernmost Point
2007-05-03 11:31:36
I have officially made it to the southernmost point in the continental United States. It’s a long ways away from just about anywhere. With that note, welcome to Key West, Florida! Of course it’s a well known destination for spring breakers and since I didn’t do the traditional spring break trip (I always opted to go snowboarding instead) this is my chance. Not that I’ll be living the spring break life, after all I’ve been hanging out with retired folks. On this stop I’m staying with Bill, a former librarian from L’Anse, the town across the bay from Baraga. My mother and Bill know each other from the library board and as soon as I found out I had a great connection in Key West I made it a point to make it here. I’m spending a lot of time relaxing, which as Bill says is what should be done while in Key West. Shortly he’ll be making his way back up to L’Anse to spend his summer in the UP. It’s a cozy condo he’s got here in Key West, close to Smather’s Beach. I’ve

Strangers
2007-05-03 10:53:06
Rather than writing about my daily activities and such lately I’ve been more driven by essay writing. My mind is buzzing with thoughts constantly. I’m ready to write a book. I wish my friends were around to have some great people to listen to me. Normally I don’t have a lot to say. In the last 23 years I probably haven’t said my fair share. My friend Stephanie used to get on my case for never saying anything in class. Well, after this trip I’ll be making up for it. I have a lot to say now, more than ever before. A topic that I haven’t touched on the site in full is “strangers,” and it’s a topic that I have a lot of input to give. Hopefully sometime after this trip you’ll be reading an essay in the My Turn section of Newsweek about my experience with strangers. So this is just a small drop while I have to get it off my mind so I can move on to other things. Do you ever feel that society and the media tells us to avoid strangers and not to say hi to them? I believe

Dragons and Cabinets

While in college I always had a hard time deciding what to study. I had no clue, I still have no clue. I always thought they should have a generic degree where you have to take every introduction class at the university. How great would that be! Rather than knowing a lot about one thing I’ve always focused on knowing a little about a lot of things. Well, eventually MSU sent me a letter saying I hard to choose a major. Bummer. I wasn’t ready to stop taking introductory classes. However, it seems that much of my trip is about learning a little about a lot. Every week is a new subject, sometimes everyday. This time it’s dragon boat racing and installing kitchen cabinets. It worked out well to be in Tampa for the annual dragon boat racing at the Asian festival. After a nice little tour of downtown Tampa, Jason and I found a spot along the river to watch the boat races. There are 22 people to a boat, 20 people rowing, one person drumming, and one person steering. Of course

Death Metal

Friday night was Jason’s last chance to see one of his student’s band. Kellan had been asking Jason to come to a show throughout the semester. A bit thanks to Jason for waiting, that way I was able to tag along. So there were Jason and I in the middle of a the crowd at the Brass Mug, the center of Tampa Bay’s death metal scene. It was a smoky bar. The walls and ceiling were all black. Low lighting. But this was all in the background. The most noticeable thing… the people. Here is my advice, if you ever go to a death metal concert, WEAR BLACK! Everyone in the room had a black t-shirt on, usually of other bands. Black was the color. And then there was me, in the middle of this crowd with a bright yellow button down shirt. Yeah, I felt a little out of place. The average length of hair for the guys was probably 12 inches long. As for the music there was lots of screaming and yelling, not one word I was able to make out. The bands have names like Dark Faith and Athiest.

…you wouldn’t understand. Actually you would if you spent 8 months driving one. I love my Compass. And no, this is not just a plug. My good pal Armin from Milwaukee asked me to share a little more about my Compass with all of you. Armin… here is your wish, my Jeep Compass blog. For starters the Compass’ slogan is “Freedom in a whole new dimension.” I think most people would easily agree that’s been the case for me. I love seeing other Compass’ on the road, which has been a lot more frequent lately. I’m always sure to give a honk or a wave. One of those waves turned out to be one of my big fans who I e-mail often. As for the Jeep owners that I stay with, they are very loyal. The brand loyalty I see in Jeep owners is quite rare for any produce or brand. On to my beautiful Compass. After _____ miles I know it pretty well. You should go test-drive one Armin. One unique thing that everyone seems to comment on are the outside door handles on the read doors. The flas

Yesterday brought me to another university! I have had no shortages of seeing different universities, but I still crave more. Jason works at the University of South Florida in the theatre department. Yesterday he had the wonderful pleasure of handing out finals to his class! That’s one thing I don’t really miss. My tour started out seeing the costume shop and the building shop. I think I want to hang out in the costume shop all day and take some funny photos of different outfits. To cap my experience at the USF theatre department I was able to watch a student-directed show. The show focused on exploring the poetry of National Poety Laureate Ted Kooser. Ted Kooser was also in the small crowd sitting right in front of me. Perhaps some inspiration traveled my way to do all this writing today. The play was very well done and a great exploration and dramatization of the written word. I have now seen drama performances from high school students in Hawaii, college students in

Can I get some extra ketchup please? That’s right, it’s a ketchup and mustard day, but I’ll pass on the mustard. I’ve never been a big fan, mayo is more my style. Speaking of ketchup, for all you folks up north they have these great restaurants down here called Chick-Fil-A and they serve waffle fries! Pretty good waffle fries in fact, good enough to not need ketchup. But for the best waffle fries in the country you have to head all the way to Marquette, Michigan and stop in at Vango’s. Yes, I had some Chick-Fil-A in Panama City, but that’s not all folks. Panama City is a place I didn’t know anything about. It became a last minute stop. It happens on the trip, things fall through in one town and come together in another. I found my way to P.C. through Nancy’s (Jenna’s mom, there have been several Nancy’s and they’re always the best moms, right mom?) friend Phil. I’ll have to keep in close touch with Phil and Nancy for future projects. They are both big Geocaching

While in Oxford I had a great site-seeing tour. Sorry for falling asleep in the car John, and to everyone else on the trip. When I’m in a car and not driving, I sleep. I’m not sure why. I try my hardest to stay awake, but it just doesn’t work. It doesn’t take long before. my head is bobbing up and down. I would think that it’s pretty hard on my neck. Speaking of sleeping… I think I saw Elvis in a trailer park, he really is in Florida! Ok, just kidding, but I did see… Elvis’ birth home – Every year hundreds of thousands of people pay the small admission fee to have the five-minute tour of the house where Elvis was born. None of the house is original. It doesn’t take long to see. Bill Bryson does a great job talking about these things in “The Lost Continent.” But it’s Elvis! And that’s all people need to buy a plane ticket from Japan to come and see where The King was born. Then they find out it’s not actually in driving distance from Chicago, Miami, or what

300 Blogs and 100 Days
2007-06-02 20:12:14
Wow, here I am, just on the outskirts of Washington D.C. I’ve now covered 34 states in 9 months and have somehow managed to spit out over 300 blog entries and post over 1600 photos (oh, but I have taken waaaay more). There have probably been over 30 newsletters I’ve sent out (alright, so I’ve missed a few, sorry!). Though there are nearly 1/3 of the states remaining, I feel very close to being on the home stretch. Take a look at the map, I only have a tiny corner left. The land area that remains is probably less than the size of Texas. A year ago when I was designing this site I was wondering what all those numbers were going to look like as well as that big red line that has gotten a little crazy in the last couple months. Truth of it all, none of it could have been anticipated! None of it! People often ask about my expectations, but, what expectations? I hardly knew what I was getting myself into. Frankly, that’s the way it is with most big dreams. You don’t know w

June 1st Blues

Nine months ago I met with one of my friends for a last time, Sarah. As part of an amazing care package she included a letter. The envelope was covered with big letters reading, “CONFIDENCE BOOST.” I had strict instructions not to open it until I had really had a moment where I needed just that. Although I’ve been tempted on a couple other occasions, today was finally the day and I have to say thank you Sarah! Also about a year ago I met with Darcy, one of my great professors and a great friend. After telling her my big plans she had one big concern: having to depend on hundreds of people. More so than funding, word of mouth, press, sponsorship, etc, I would have to depend on complete strangers putting me up in their house with their kids. For staying with over 80 hosts that I have never met I have done pretty darn well. But, what you don’t hear about are the horror stories! I always tell people that everything is fine and with a smile on the face. But there have been

Cary

Cary was short lived, but well lived, and with a really weird sleeping schedule. You see I stayed with Kayla (a good friend of my friend Laura). Kayla works at the local TV station in Raleigh, WRAL. She works the morning news shift. What does that mean? Getting up at 4:15 in the morning! What does it mean when you bring a cake into work when you go in? Getting up at 3:15 in the morning! Since it was a one-bedroom apartment I was on the couch without my own room and was basically waking up when Kayla did. It was a challenge. Especially since it’s been harder and harder to get up the longer this trip goes on. The good part of it all was I got a personal tour of a pretty large TV station. I was impressed. Though I didn’t want to, I remained on my best behavior. I wanted to press buttons, flip switches, and turn dials. Kayla is a camera operator and they do it all from a chair! Completely automated cameras. It blew my mind. Of course it doesn’t hurt to stay with some

Washington, D.C.

In the words of my amazingly awesome mother, “Just imagine!” Every day there are decisions being made in this city that have such enormous impact on the country and world. Every single news program I’ve watched in the last year has a story that relates back to a decision that was made in this city. George W. Bush is the most talked about man in the world. As for the United States he’s probably the second most talked about person. First is probably that Paris Hilton girl and I’m sick of it. There are more pressing issues to cover. Why does a respectable news channel like CNN have to cover her going to jail. I mean I’ve got a pretty cool story! Anyways, that’s the first and last time I’ll ever mention her name on my blog… back to D.C. There we were, Charles and I, sitting at COSI eating some lunch and he mentioned, “It’s strange to think that the president could be only a few hundreds yards from us.” That’s about how close we grabbed a bit to eat to the White Hous

The 35th State
2007-06-04 16:46:35
Today was the shortest drive I have had on the trip to go from one host to another while going to a different state. The total distance in the drive from Virginia to Maryland? A whopping 13 miles. A short drive like that only has enough time to play maybe three songs from my iPod, which makes the next thing even more ironic. There I was, on my way, and the first song to play includes the lyrics, “on my way to Maryland.” Of the playlist of my favorites, about 715 songs, that’s got to be a pretty small chance of happening. I don’t think I have another song that mentions the state Maryland. A similar thing happened on my way driving out of Los Angeles in December. And any song of mine that mentions the name of a state now has a different meaning. Here I’m staying with Charles and John.
