European “Far-Right” Parties - Conservative or Reactionary 2007-07-19 18:08:50 The European
elections of recent years have shown a clear resurgence of conservatism on a continent largely known for its socialized institutions. With the election of the French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, two of the major players in the EU now have conservatives at the helm. Additionally, the largest and most influential party in the EU Parliament is the center-right European People’s Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats (EPP-ED).
More curious perhaps is the increasing influence of “far-right” parties in European states. Although still a very small minority in all EU states, the “far-right” parties have gained seats in nearly all of the recent elections, including those of the EU Parliament. But are these parties truly Conservative, or merely reactionary? A closer look at some of the better known parties is required in order to answer this question.

Setback for Cameron as Labour wins test votes 2007-07-19 23:24:00 In a test of popular support for Gordon Brown and David Cameron
, voters opted for Labour
in two by-elections Thursday.
The Tories were never going to win former Prime Minister Tony Blair’s constituency, but they had a legitimate chance in the Ealing-Southall seat.
Cameron put forth Tony Lit, a popular minority businessman, and several local council members defected, joining the Conservatives – raising speculation of an upset in a Labour stronghold.
However, the new-look opposition wasn’t able to pull out a win – it finished third behind the 8,230 votes cast for the Liberal Democrats. Labour’s retention came at a slimmer margin than normal, though a victory is a victory.
This was a key test for the new government of Prime Minister Brown and whether the Conservatives were in a position to win in the event a snap general election was called, as many expect, later this year.
One of the newly elected MPs said the by-election campaign had “been a disaster” for Cameron, who Read more:Setback

Republicans struggle when it comes to the internet 2007-07-25 23:13:34 Republicans struggle when it comes
to utilizing the vast frontier of new media to their advantage.
It has become de jure for candidates of all levels of politics to launch an online presence with the typical offerings, namely: a social-networking account on Facebook or MySpace, a blog with insight and news from the campaign that otherwise wouldn’t be published in daily newspapers and videos on YouTube. However, not everyone puts much time or thought into implementing technology into politics.

Giuliani campaign interfering with Michigan primary 2007-07-25 19:58:27 Updated at 9:53 p.m. Eastern Time.
The presidential campaign of former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani
is trying to prevent Michigan
’s primary election from moving up to February 5 or earlier, sources tell RightWingWorld.com.
Currently, the state Legislature is debating measures that would allow the Democrats and Republicans to hold a semi-open primary election as early as January 29, 2008, though there is growing speculation a deal won’t be reached bill won’t be passed or signed by the governor – which could result in a party-run caucus for the Democrats and an old-fashioned convention for the GOP.

Bloomberg candidacy looming 2007-07-25 15:57:12 I wasn’t intending on writing for a couple days because I’m on vacation, enjoying a beautiful week of weather and having fun on a lake, but a story about New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg
CNN this afternoon prompted me to put together a column.
While a few bloggers and some polls have indicated a Bloomberg candidacy would hurt the GOP, there’s little way this could happen based on the mayor’s stances on key issues. His entry into the 2008 presidential campaign will help Republican candidates.

Does Bloomberg pay the congestion charge? 2007-07-31 22:43:19 New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg
is known for touting his environmental policies and the rather infamous “congestion charge
” on automobiles entering the city, but it has been revealed the likely presidential candidate travels in two pollution-heavy SUVs every morning.
While the newly-registered independent — he had been a Republican and a Democrat before that –has made it a point to ride public transport to his office each day, the New York Times reports Wednesday that Bloomberg travels a rather lengthy distance from his house to the subway station.
On mornings that he takes the subway from home, Mr. Bloomberg is picked up at his Upper East Side town house by a pair of king-size Chevrolet Suburbans. The mayor is driven 22 blocks to the subway station at 59th Street and Lexington Avenue, where he can board an express train to City Hall. His drivers zip past his neighborhood station, a local subway stop a five-minute walk away.

No Child Left Behind Act in need of supporters in Congress 2007-08-02 13:36:51 The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 is a U.S. federal law signed on January 8, 2002, by President George W. Bush. It aims at improving the performance of primary and secondary schools by increasing accountability standards for states, schools districts and schools, and giving more choice to parents in choosing schools where their kids should attend.
It also provides a focus on helping underserved kids, like disabled, low income or minorities. Accountability standards are set and measured annually by each state to measure educational growth and achievement. All results are also reported every year to parents. Standards are set for teacher qualifications.

Giuliani would be a ‘terrible president,’ ex-aide says 2007-08-05 23:28:15 The only thing that helps Rudy Giuliani
with conservatives is his appeal on national security issues, as many see him as someone with strong leadership – someone who will hunt down the terrorists and keep America safe.
Giuliani’s perception is slowly falling apart as more and more people are raising doubts of his mayoral record. First, there were questions from firefighters, and now there are comments from Jerome Hauer, Giuliani’s former emergency management director.
