Monday Morning Wrapup
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Bucs 14, Bengals 13 - Bruce Gradkowski continues the great tradition of Western PA quarterbacks (Charlie Batch, Gus Frerotte, Mike McMahon, etc) in leading the Bucs to a last-minute victory over Cincinnati. Gradkowski was upset at the Steelers for not selecting him, but again, I will repeat that Omar Jacobs was the right choice for Pittsburgh. As for the Bengals, since beating the Steelers they've been slaughtered by New England and defeated by a winless Tampa Bay team led by a QB making his 2nd career start. Let's not size Chad Johnson for that Super Bowl ring just yet.Panthers 23, Ravens 21 - The Steve McNair Injury Watch, as predicted here and here by your fearless leader in the preseason, is finally underway. So here's what we have in Baltimore: McNair is injured, McNair bandwagoneers were jumping off at a record pace BEFORE his injury, and to further muddle the waters, Kyle Boller tossed 3 TDs in relief today. Do you hear that? That noise all the way from Maryland? Sounds like a

It looks like Evgeni is going to play on Wednesday night. (Post-Gazette) An early 2007 NFL Mock Draft . Note the lack of Tiffin players projected to go in round one. (Draftking.com) SI.com casts Seinfeld with pro athletes. I would assume this is the only time Julia Louis-Dreyfus has been compared to Von Hayes. (SI.com)Lamar Thomas' comments will be edited out of the Miami-FIU re-air on Wednesday. I'm assuming the actual fight will stay in the re-air. And if not, it will live on in YouTube infamy. (ESPN.com)ESPN Radio has outlawed the use of Deadspin as a legitimate media source. (Deadspin)Peter King, to the Steelers (Item 1-K in today's 10 Things I Think I Think):"The Steelers shouldn't get all pissy when Troy Polamalu gets tackled by the hair, or by the hair and jersey, as he did by Larry Johnson. His hair is the size of Texas, for crying out loud."Take that, you yinzers. And no, King will NOT rank your favorite team in the Fine Fifteen this week, either. (SI.com)Shockey to Raiders

Just 11 days ago, new Pens owner Jim Balsillie dropped a "Holy S***" on Fox Sports Pittsburgh after being introduced to Bob Errey. I can't say I blame him, because I've seen many people react the same when meeting Errey. But now we have video proof, courtesy of The Pensblog (who else?).

I present to you "Exhibit B" in the trial of what's wrong with football players (Exhibit A being Albert Haynesworth doing his interpretation of the musical Stomp on the head of a Dallas Cowboy). For those of you wondering, the thug-wannabe who chimes in on this is former Hurricane WR Lamar Thomas. Hard to say what was worse in this video: the violence, Miami 's helmet-raising rally afterwards, or Thomas' egging on of the antics.

Steelers Move to 1-0 Since Adding Chad Brown
1970-01-01 00:59:59
The Steelers rose from the dead with a 45-7 win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday at the Big Ketcup Bottle. Ben Roethlisberger, desperately trying to keep pace with Tyler Palko as Pittsburgh's favorite quarterback, had a perfect passer rating while throwing for 238 yards and 2 TDs. I'm glad for Ben, as I thought he was getting too much of the blame from media and fans. Regardless of the fact that he just helped the team win a Super Bowl for the first time since 1980, I think he was just one more bad start away from a visit by the dreaded "Maddox Lawn Service" crew. The offensive line truly sets the pace of the game, while opening up holes for the running backs and setting up the pass with said efficient running attack. And a quick way to tell how well the offensive line played is by a simple glance at the rushing stats. Sure enough, the Steelers rolled up 219 yards and 3 TDs on the ground. Fast William Parker contributed the never-before-done trifecta of 109 yards rushing, 2 TDs,

1970-01-01 00:59:59
Pitt Wannstached their way to a 52-7 win over Central Florida on Friday night in front of whatever national TV audience wasn't watching the NLCS. Larod Stephens-Howling once again led the way, rolling up 135 yards on the ground to go along with three TDs. He's making fantasy college football players very happy these days. Tyler Palko continued his strong start by going 11-for-15 for 172 yards and 2 TDs in three quarters of work. He gave way to backup Bill Stull, who tossed his first career TD pass late in the game. Next up for Pitt is now-#24 Rutgers, who should be 6-0 after presumably disposing of Navy today. I don't think this line has ever been said out loud in the history of mankind, but "it's a big matchup between Pitt and Rutgers".Other newsworthy links this morn':ESPN does a Power-Conference breakdown of college basketball, and look who's on top of the Big East! A Guide to Pittsburgh's Finest Sushi for Chad Brow...
1970-01-01 00:59:59
14-year NFL veteran Chad Brown returned back to his original team today, your Pittsburgh Steelers. Due the fact that nearly every linebacker on the roster is injured, including Joey Porter, James Harrison, Mike Meriweather and Jack Lambert, the Steelers reached out to the unemployed ex-Patriot. And that came only after Jack Ham turned down their request to lace them up one more time. Brown was the 44th player taken in the 1993 draft, the Steelers' #2 choice in that class. Their first rounder, Deon "Seven" Figures, was a teammate of Brown's at Colorado. He played four years in the black and gold, all while nurturing his side gig as a snake dealer. He now operates a reptile shop called Pro Exotics in Colorado.Brown left the Steelers for the greener and bluer pastures of Seattle in 1997, for a fatter contract and the chance to play for a team that's never won anything. But Brown's wife tossed one more stomach punch to the city on their exit, citing Pittsburgh's lack of sushi restaura

Sienna Miller Hates Pittsburgh too
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Earlier in the week, a brief post about some comments Ian Snell made about Pittsburgh angered some of the locals. So you can imagine when actress Sienna Miller , in town to film the movie "The Mysteries of Pittsburgh", upset the apple cart even more than Snell with these comments she gave to Rolling Stone (via Tribune Review):"Can you believe this is my life? Will you pity me when you're back in your funky New York apartment and I'm still in Pittsburgh? I need to get more glamorous films." Miller went on to call the town "Sh*tsburgh". I used to think Miller was a highly-regarded actress, but she comes off sounding like a Bengals fan in this interview. Of course, now that she's no longer with Jude Law, maybe she can meet up with Snell before he bolts the city and they can be miserable together. A match made in Pittsburgh-hating heavenLost in all of this is the fact that Nick Nolte is in this movie. Does anyone know if he filmed any scenes in Pittsburgh? Did he make any appearances in

A Special Anniversary
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Thanks to reader Bernard for this email: It's Friday the 13th. As in, Friday, OCTOBER 13th: A cherished date in Pirates history, one to acknowledge and celebrate forever. At 3:35 p.m. on this date in 1960, Bill Mazeroski led off the bottom of the ninth in the seventh game of the World Series. He launched a towering line drive that carried over Yogi Berra and the ivy-draped left-field wall at Forbes Field to lift the Pirates to a dramatic 10-9 victory over the heavily favored New York Yankees. It was arguably the most dramatic home run in baseball history and sealed the Pirates' first World Series triumph in 35 years. The portion of the wall still stands in Oakland, and it's become an annual tradition for Pirates fans to gather at the hallowed spot where Maz made baseball history. One footnote about this wild game: It was the only World Series game of the 20th century to have zero strikeouts and, depite the high score and numerous pitching changes, was concluded swiftly, in less than

Steelers to get Jerry Porter or Randy Moss?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
That's what Profootballtalk.com is reporting this afternoon."Pittsburgh reportedly prefers Porter because he's cheaper, but Moss would fit better outside and could push Cedrick Wilson and/or Santonio Holmes into the slot. Oakland would likely command draft picks instead of current Steelers players, although Joey Porter (hamstring) could be a consideration. A trade, like most blockbuster NFL deals, will still be tough to complete"I find this extremely hard to believe. Could a full moon be coming to Heinz Field? That would be a disgusting act. Thanks to loyal readers Bob and Jim for the tip.

The Most Controversial QBs in Steeler History
1970-01-01 00:59:59
The story that follows was the product of much teeth-gnashing this evening. My first idea was a piece called "Most Hated Pittsburgh Athletes", which then evolved into "Most Hated Steeler s", and then gave way to "Most Controversial Steelers". But there was one common theme, through all of these lists: Steeler Quarterbacks. So I decided they would get their own article. With the exception of a select handful of QBs, this city has been notoriously tough on its signal callers. I challenge anyone to find a city that is so hard on a particular position for one of their sports teams. Some of you will argue that a number of these players were, in fact, successful, and you'll be correct. One of these men actually won four Super Bowls. But controversy followed each one at some point in their career.Being that I was born in 1977, I was obviously unable to watch all of these players in their respective heydays. So there will be no 1-10 rankings in this article. You can discuss that in the comments

Wannstache to Coach Steelers?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
From our friends at Profootballtalk.com, the "rumor mill" suggests Coach Stache would be interested in the Steeler job once Mr. Bill eventually exits. I totally believe this rumor, because I have never known profootballtalk.com to spread false rumors. Didn't you see Randy Moss and Jerry Porter lining up at WR for the Steelers last week? Huge reaction to the Pittsburgh Sports Power Rankings II piece yesterday. Thanks to all for making it a great success. But it sorta backed me up on a number of quality stories. So here's a giant group of links to peruse.Evgeni Malkin scores his 1st NHL goal in his 1st NHL game, but the Pens fall to New Jersey, 2-1. (Post Gazette)The Isle of Capri Casino plan has received the full endorsement from the Pittsburgh Gaming Task Force. Your move, Ed Rendell. (Post Gazette) For critics of the new Monday Night Football team, here's an article you're sure to enjoy. (Deadspin)The Front Butt Hall of Fame is finally here. From Armchair GM:What exactly is a Front Butt? Well I'm glad you asked. As Urban Dictionary so eloquently put it, a front butt is "an enormous, fatty enlargement of the abdomen, genital, and thigh region that morphs together to create the appearance of a bulbous ass on a persons front"Donna Shalala won't throw athletes under the bus. Your feedback and tips are always encouraged. Here's what's on the mind of selected Mondesi readers this afternoon: A.J. Writes: "Thought it might be worth mentioning that Me First and the Gimme Gimme's new album "Love Their Country" dropped this past Tuesday and can now be found in local record shops and probably the Pirates Club House stores. I know you're a fan... and quite frankly, any band the Pirates hate is a reason for us to sing their praises. " El Jefe de Pistola sends us a link for a new protective cup called "The Nutty Buddy". Make sure to watch the video clip where our test subject takes a Juggs fastball to the sack. Frustrated Pirate fan Mario writes:"Tonight in the NLCS Game Seven - Oliver Perez is starting against Jeff Suppan for a chance to take on Sean Casey's team (which is managed by Jim Leyland, with help from Lloyd McClendon, Gene Lamont, Andy Van Slyke and Don Slaught) in the World Series?Think back to one year ago - Lloyd was out as Pirates manager and two

Joey Porter Rated 2nd Dirtiest Player; Bath forthc...
1970-01-01 00:59:59
In a recent poll of 361 NFL players, Crazed Dog Owner/Steeler Linebacker Joey Porter was voted as the 2nd dirtiest player in the NFL, trailing only headhunting Patriots safety Rodney Harrison. Harrison ran away with the voting, nabbing 23% to Porter's 6%. Everybody's favorite smiling receiver, Hines Ward, came in sixth with 4%. Ward was the only skill-position player to appear on the list.If you asked me, "What team would have two of the NFL's six dirtiest players", the Steelers would not have been my guess. I would think Raiders, Ravens, Hurricanes...something alone those lines. Are these tactics the real secret behind Coach Cowher's genius? Joey Porter : Ridin' Dirty

Nice knowing you, Kendall Simmons .If you're a Pitt fan and you like SI.com's Stewart Mandel, you won't like him any more.ESPN's Bill Simmons wrote a running diary of the NLCS Game 7 last night. Pittsburgh Sports Power Rankings II
1970-01-01 00:59:59
The long-awaited second edition of the Pittsburgh Sports Power Rankings is finally here. A few changes, though. This time, the rankings are based on recent internet buzz, not overall clout. So fine folks like Dan Rooney and Kevin Colbert are out. These rankings will reflect Pittsburghers who make life easier for Bloggers like myself. So without further adieu, I give you your revised Pittsburgh Sports Power Rankings...20. Marc-Andre Fleury - The Penguins goalie and #1 overall pick in 2003 is off to a hot start with a career-low 2.87 goals-against and big wins against Philadelphia and the Rangers. But a persistent rumor around Pittsburgh is that Fleury may be benched for his play. If his performance continues to improve, the Penguins would be in danger of drafting below the 2nd overall choice for the first time since 2002, which is totally unacceptable to management. Some photographer was really brave to sit in the net during an NHL game 19. H.B. Blades - Pitt's senior LB and son of for

Pittsburgh Sports Power Rankings

The Power Ranking. A totally arbitrary, meaningless poll that incites riots in chatrooms everywhere. Where Peter King can rank the Chargers ahead of a playoff team when they've already been eliminated. Where the Seahawks are currently ranked #1, even though they lost the Super Bowl. Of course, ESPN already played out the season and the Super Bowl, so there's no reason to even play the season anyway. But that's another topic. Power Rankings are meant to stir up debate, and they always do. Readers, here is the Mondesi's House Pittsburgh Sports Power Rankings: the 30 biggest newsmakers in Pittsburgh Sports. Owners, Execs, Players, Media, Coaches...they are all fair game. Enjoy!1. A Pittsburgh Firefighter Misbehaves at the Steeler...
1970-01-01 00:59:59
If you're a Pittsburgh firefighter, what's considered "acceptable behavior" at a Steeler game? Exposing yourself? Kicking a security guard in the groin? Kicking a cop in the knee? Well, local fireman Martin Sanders accomplished the trifecta on Sunday. Sanders, who was taken to Allegheny General Hospital, even struck another officer who tried to stop him from using a cell phone on hospital property, which is prohibited. And you thought Larry Johnson was the most out-of-control person at Heinz Field on Monday. (Thanks to reader Bernard for the tip. Source= Pittsburgh Post-Gazette)

Vince Carter at Duquesne?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I don't know how I missed this one, but Half-Man, Half-Amazing Himself was in the Burgh recently to support the Duquesne Basketball program. I generally did not care much for after hearing that he told opponents what plays his team was running while in Toronto. And he generally seemed like the typical, me-first superstar that the NBA has come to represent. I don't know the entire story behind this other than the article I read, but this seemed like a pretty decent thing to do. Duquesne will certainly be an interesting team to follow this year. New coach Ron Everhart gutted the existing roster and brought in virtually an entire team of new recruits, some very highly regarded. I have no doubt that the incident has brought the team together, and I think they will show some major improvement this season. It will be hard to grab any hoops headlines away from the Panthers this season, but I would keep my eyes on the Dukes down the road.

Cardinals = Pirates?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
I just finished watching the train wreck that was Monday Night Football, and I can't help but thinking there's a little bit of Arizona Cardinals in the Pirates , and a little bit of Pirates in the Arizona Cardinals. These are two franchises that are so ingrained in their losing ways, they simply can't, or won't, take the next step. The Cardinals forced Rex Grossman into SIX turnovers on Monday Night. They allowed a total of ZERO points on defense. They held the Bears to 168 yards of total offense. And they STILL lost. If I were a Cardinal fan, I would be totally flabbergasted after this game. Seriously, where do you go from here? You totally shut down what was the NFL's #1 offense for an entire game, and you lose by one point on a missed 40-yard field goal by one of the game's best kickers? On the other hand, if I were a Bears fan, I'd probably be more concerned than excited after this game. Grossman was compared to Brett Favre earlier this season, and tonight he finally showed why

What to Watch This Weekend
1970-01-01 00:59:59
Mike Tyson vs. Corey Sanders, 4 Rounds, Youngstown, Ohio (tonight, Pay Per View)- OK, Youngstown isn't "The Burb of the Burgh" (that's Steubenville), but as far as I know, this is the closest we'll come to the Tyson Tour in Pittsburgh. At least until Paul Spadafora fight again.Mike Tyson's Tour Schedule and NewsIllinois at Penn State, 12 PM, Saturday- The Anthony Morelli injury watch has dominated this week's coverage of the game. But it looks like he's got the green light. PSU will need a great game from Morelli to overcome the schemes drawn up by Illini coach Ron Zook (above, throwing signs).Rutgers at Pitt, 5:45, Saturday, ESPN2 The Panthers have made a habit of losing "big" games on their schedule the last few years against teams not named Virginia Tech. Unfortunately, the Hokies are not on the schedule this year. So since Team Wanny dropped the earlier big game against a team coached by this man , the pressure is really on to pull this one out. Rutgers 20, Pitt 10- ANOTHER big-game loss for Pitt. Yes, I know they're rebuilding. But the storyline is the same, again and again, year after year. Michigan State. Nebraska. Notre Dame. Fiesta Bowl. Miami. I think West Virginia might run for 400 yards on November 16.Penguins 5, Columbus 3- Pittsburgh is on the verge of full-fledged Malkin Mania, with a goal in each of his first three games. Jordan Staal chips in with two goals, including one on a penalty shot. Staal becomes the first player since 1982 to score his first three NHL goals when his team was shorthanded. At least one team is playing well in this city.Penn State 26, Illinois 12- The Lions were outgained by the Fighting Zooks, 363-184, but somehow managed to pull this one out. Did Ben Roethlisberger Break His Jaw?
1970-01-01 00:59:59
In between pointing out who or what is wrong in the world of sports (today's target: Kenny Rogers, if you were wondering), ESPN Radio's Dan Patrick chatted with "Insider" Chris Mortensen. The conversation started with Patrick's favorite topic, steroids (Shawne Merriman) and then segued into an injury update. Mortensen hinted that our favorite accident-prone quarterback could have a broken jaw. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if a Looney Tunes-style safe would fall on Roethlisberger's head while walking down the street. Someone (Seattle? Cincy?) is working their #7 voodoo doll HARD. Heads up, Big BenMortensen also added that Seattle QB Matt Hasselbeck was getting an MRI today on his injured knee. He speculated that Hasselbeck may also be out an extended period of time. That would be both Super Bowl QBs knocked out in the same weekend. A first, perhaps?

First off, thanks for all the emails on behalf of Official Mondesi's House Mascot Maddux. He had a much better day and was able to get enough medicine in his system. In fact, he just sat down next to me as I post this very update. He thanks all the great Mondesi readers and wanted to add that he thinks the Steelers should fire their Special Teams Coach. He's a very smart doberman. The Chiefs Attended a Passion Party in Pittsburgh
1970-01-01 00:59:59
How this flew under the collective radar of Steeler Nation and the national media is beyond belief. Kansas City Star columnist/former ESPN employee Jason Whitlock outlines a big reason why the Chiefs got blown out by the Steelers last week. It turns out that the Chiefs stayed at the Airport Hyatt, which happened to be hosting a "Passion Party " convention the same weekend. A "Passion Party" is apparently a Tupperware-party style event with "adult toys" being offered in place of plastic leftover containers. To the surprise of absolutely no one, several Chiefs crossed paths with the conventioneers the night before the game. The Chiefs are mum on details, but Whitlock writes that Chiefs Coach Herm Edwards "verbally shredded" his team after finding out about the party. And we thought teams were going to be better behaved after the Love Boat! 1000 thank yous to Deadspin for the link to this story.
