Happy Birthday to Me! 2007-09-20 09:25:46 At midnight, my hubby leaned over and whispered, "happy birthday!" He's a keeper, Y'all!
It's a beautiful, fall-ish, day and I have all of my family with me. What more could a girl ask for on her birthday?
Being the Jane Austen fan that I am, my gifts were awesomely appropriate. I got the final movie I needed to round out my collection...
I also got a new read...
So far, this birthday has been a great one! Read more: Happy

A New Look 2007-09-19 22:31:13 How do you like my new look? I love it!! Thanks to Jules at Everyday Design!! It's excellent! If you're looking for a new blog design, be sure to consider Jules!
Smooching and Mushiness 2007-09-18 21:44:51 Hubby and I had a little date tonight to celebrate our 14 wonderful years together. We ate at Longhorn Steakhouse (my most favorite restaurant ever!) and then we caught the 7 o'clock show of 3:10 to Yuma.Hubby likes westerns and I like Russell Crowe...so it really was a Win-Win situation. It actually was a decent movie though.
On the way out the door from leaving the kids at Grandma's, Spud told us not to smooch too much. "Yeah," Sis chimed in, "none of that mushy stuff." So...Just to add a little extra mushiness to this post, I give you...

The Many Benefits of Sitemeter 2007-10-01 12:27:29 Oh, how I love Sitemeter! It's my eyes of the internet. How many of you regular bloggers love to check all the statistics of your site, as much as I do?
Some of the many statistics you can see:
1. city, state, country of each visitor 2. ISP provider of each visitor 3. IP address of each visitor 4. how many pages each visitor visits 5. how much time each visitor spends on your site. 6. what type of computer each visitor uses (PC, Mac, etc.)
Those are only a few of my favorite things to look at. You can also see what search words brought your site up on the popular search engines like Google. Sometimes those are quite funny too.
It can also be of help when you have an unwanted reader. Most of the time, just having them know that you "can see them" is enough to run them off.
If you've never used it, I would consider it, if only for it's "fun-factor".

More on Boasting 2007-09-30 19:23:02 We had a really encouraging service for me this evening. Don't you just love when the Lord confirms your thoughts?! Boasting and bragging was even mentioned in the message!
Also, I got to hear one of my favorite songs...
And one of the versus says:
Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, save in the death of Christ, my God; all the vain things that charm me most, I sacrifice them to his blood.
Boasting Only in the Lord 2007-09-30 13:12:50 Well now, that last post was very interesting, wasn't it? It was definitely typed in the heat of my pent-up frustration. I guess I sound like a hypocrite typing something like that after my post about understanding, love and kindness.
Really though, I type these posts as more of a help to myself than anything and I truly do desire to be loving and kind in every situation. However, I find some situations to be nearly impossible. I'm really trying! and I didn't say aloud the things I was thinking.
I just can't stand to hear people constantly talk about themselves...what they have, what they are getting, how much money it cost, where they're going, where they've been, how much better they do everything, how much more they know than anyone....I could go on, but I think you get the picture.
I'm just not the type of person to brag about things, and it sickens me to hear others do it. So after a whole evening of it, I had reached a boiling point.
Don't get me wrong though, I l

I am so tired of hearing: "this is what we did, blah, blah, blah"..."this is what we have, blah, blah, blah"..."this is what we are going to do, blah, blah, blah"..."we went here, blah, blah, blah"..."we spent this much money, blah, blah, blah"...and ON and ON and ON...........
I wanted so badly to scream..."PLEASE HUSH!!!!!!"

Mistaken Body Parts 2007-09-28 16:03:27 Picture this...My sweet hubby lying on the couch. Now, this just beckons children for a wrestling match. I mean, dad doesn't just lay on the couch for nothing, right?
Sure enough, Super Spud comes diving across the coffee table to power-drive dad. Only problem is his aim is a bit off and his head collides with dad's nose.
Dad is in colossal amounts of pain. Spud grabs his own head with great shouts of, "Ouch!!! You hurt my nipple!"
Immediately, the whole family bursts into fits of laughter, but Spud can't figure out why. He keeps saying, "Why are you laughing? My nipple really hurts!" All the while holding the side of his head.
Once I am able to catch my breath a bit, I ask Spud to point to the location of his pain. He points to his TEMPLE. I correct him and he says, "Oh yeah, I knew it was something like that!" Read more: Parts

What Will I Leave Behind? 2007-09-27 11:23:38 Have you ever heard the saying, "your reputation precedes you"?
What kind of reputation do you want preceding you? Personally, I hope that my reputation is one of understanding, kindness and love. The Bible says...
A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold. (Proverbs 22:1)
Our actions and the words we speak, make up who we are, and they also show what is truly in our hearts.
I am reminded of a time when I was cautioned by several people about a specific person. This person's reputation preceded them and it wasn't a desirable one because of the way they treated others. They had tarnished their good name and it has stuck with them.
Lately, I've had the words to an old hymn running through my mind. The songs asks the question, "What will I leave behind?" One line in particular says, "Will I be missed by those I love, or have I been unkind?"
We will be remembered by the way we have treat Read more: Leave
Help Me Out With This One 2007-10-11 17:33:45 In the past week, I've been asked a couple of times how I like homeschooling. Well, of course we like it, but for some reason I find this question difficult to answer. Don't get me wrong, there are tons of reasons I like homeschooling, but I really don't want to go listing them all to a complete stranger. Yet, a simple "I like it" doesn't seem to be enough to satisfy the inquiry.
So y'all help me out here. What kind of not-too-long-but-not-too-short answer do you give to curious strangers who ask how you like homeschooling?

More Positive Posting 2007-10-09 19:12:21 Okay...I said I wasn't going to post about this anymore. But, I wanted to explain my thought process in getting to this point of not posting about it anymore. Make sense? I thought not.
Anyway, if you have read my blog in the past few months, you may have noticed that I have been struggling with something. It all goes back to this post and me trying very hard to let things go. I've been venting my frustrations on my blog each time I felt upset or angry.
I have realized this isn't fair to my readers. I tried to put myself in your place...when I visit other blogs, I don't like to read a bunch of ranting. Not to mention, you may think I'm more evil than I really am after reading how I wanted to tell someone to shut up! *wink!*
So....I've started another (private) blog just for my venting/strugglings while I work through this specific problem in my life. I hope that this will enable me to make posts here more uplifting and positive.
Now...this is really the last time I will po Read more: Positive

You Mean I Used to Enjoy This? 2007-10-08 16:01:12
This past weekend was our town's annual (Insert Revealing Name Here) festival. For 3 days the downtown area was shut down and filled with booths of all sorts. There were arts & crafts, carnival games and rides, and lots and lots of food.
Growing up, this was a great time of excitement for me. I couldn't wait to get out of school on Friday and walk around with all my friends. As I've gotten older, I find that it is not so appealing and I wonder how I ever felt such excitement.
Yet, that same excitement made an appearance this weekend upon the faces of my children. Their little eyes sparkled at the twinkling lights of the carnival rides. Rides that I now see as "wreckage waiting to happen". But, against my better judgment, we paid the outrageous cost for an armband that would allow them to ride as many times as they wanted or until Mom had a nervous breakdown.
So, Hubby and I chatted over all the noise, while Sis and Spud stood in a never-ending line to get on a ru
Looking Beyond Our Galaxy 2007-10-07 13:33:36 My hubby and I are amateur star-gazers. There is just something about the great expanse of space that makes us all giddy. The possibility of actually spotting something that we have previously only seen on The Science Channel is enough to keep us searching the skies for hours.
So far we have spotted four of the planets clearly through our telescope, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. My favorite planet is Saturn. I just love being able to see its icy rings with my own eyes! Jupiter is pretty neat too, with it's horizontal stripes. Also on our list of spacey spottings: the moon and star clusters. But, the other night
we topped our best find with...the Andromeda Galaxy
!!! Of course, it didn't look as clear as that picture to the right, but you could definitely make out what it was. I've never seen anything like it!!

An Itty-Bitty Post 2007-10-05 21:17:27 Just popping in to say...I haven't fallen off the face of the earth. I'm a little busy this weekend, but also I'm in a bit of a writing funk. I've been a little distracted lately, letting something bother me, when it isn't even worth my concern and certainly not worth writing anymore posts about. Posting for this weekend might be a bit sparse, but hopefully I'll be back in full swing soon! Stay tuned!

The Road Not Taken 2007-10-03 22:15:24
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth.
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same.
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Update on Our Homeschool 2007-10-03 16:49:53
I haven't posted about school in a while. I guess it's like the saying, "no news, is good news". Things are plugging along just fine. We've got a routine going and it seems to be getting the job done.
Spud is improving in his reading each day. Slowly but surely. He has mastered all of his short and long vowel sounds and can sound out just about any word you give him. He knows many, many words by sight, which makes reading more fun for him. We still struggle with the wiggles if he has to sound out several words in a row. I'm very proud of the progress he is making.
Sis is an all-around smarty-pants. She has no problems in the academic area and can do just about anything you show her. But getting her to do it without complaining first is a whole other story! She doesn't want to do anything that takes more than a few minutes to accomplish. For example: After spotting a large long division problem on her math quiz today, she asks how many points I would count off. When Read more: Update

From the Arctic to the Desert and Back Again 2007-10-17 20:19:07 Sheesh, peoples! This has been one rough tummy bug. I can't seem to shake it. I had a near breakdown a couple of days ago.
Not kidding.
The worst part of it is, I have been running a low-grade fever and I wake up in the night freezing like it's the Arctic
in my room. So, I get up and waddle like a penguin into the kitchen to take some Tylenol. I finally drift back off to sleep, only to wake up like it's a barren desert in my room. "Rinse and repeat"...all night long...
Well, Monday morning, I woke up after a night of extreme colds and hots and I really wasn't feeling too swell. But...I had to do my chicken house work, because a farm never stops, y'all. Not even for a tummy bug, unfortunately. Hubby offered to go do the work, but y'all he was on his 10th straight day of 12-hour shifts, six of which had been nights (he's STILL working too, bless his little worn-out heart). So, I wasn't about to act all babyish and make him go work MORE!
I just sucked it up and we Read more: Desert

The Blahs, The Dawgs & Splat 2007-10-13 19:29:44
Oh y'all! I have been so sick! Tummy bugs aren't fun, are they? Especially for us mommies! We have to keep going even when we don't feel so good. My hubby would give me a rest if he could though. He's working lots of overtime on his job and it really hard on him. But, that means, I have to keep doing everything I normally do, including all my chicken house work! Trust me, y'all, dead chickens and tummy bugs don't mix! Blah!
Anyway, I'm starting to feel a little bit better. I'm still a bit weak, but hopefully by tomorrow I'll feel lots better. I'm watching the Dawgs (losing at the moment) play Vandy. They could lose every game and I'd still love 'em. I love college football, y'all!
Oh, yeah! Last, but certainly not least...Lindsay at Splat Designs did my header, background and category titles for me. Y'all, she is so nice! She was so helpful and WOWZERS! was she quick! If you're looking to spice up your blog, you should definitely check her out!
This Saddens Me 2007-10-23 18:43:11 After reading a small article introducing an upcoming news special called Facing Reality: Exploring Abortion Through 3 Women's Right to Choose, I was sickened by a few of the quotes.
For example:
"why go through with this all over again"Kayla, though, began having doubts about becoming a mother when her friends and the community chastised her for being single and pregnant. It wasn't much later until her boyfriend started doing the same.
"It made me realize what kind of father he would be if he was going to resent me; and if he was going to resent this kid for the rest of his life, why go through with it?" she said. "There's ... nobody deserves to go through that."
This article is just a "teaser" for the televised news special, so it tells us to tune in to find out these women's decision, but these quotes honestly make me nauseous. I pray they change their minds. There are so many women out there who would love to adopt their child.
I think it's the self-absorbed attitude
A Cup of Coffee 2007-10-23 12:36:09 Last night, we had a family outing as sort of a "celebration" of a successful first bunch of chickens. We'll use any excuse to celebrate!!
Anyway, we ate at Outback Steakhouse and it was delicious! Really. It was one of the best meals I've had in a long time!!
After leaving with our tummies filled, we decided a stop by Barnes & Noble would be a good way to end the night. My kids LOVE the bookstore! You would think it was Christmas, if you saw how excited they get at the mention of it.
This time, Spud's excitement was too funny!!
When Hubby suggested the bookstore, Spud said, "Oh, Yes!! Please can we?!?" Then remembering the Starbucks located inside the bookstore that Hubby and I like to visit, Spud said in his most serious of voices, "I think I'll have a cup of coffee."
Y'all.
I thought I would die from all the laughter. Read more: Coffee
More Chicken Talk 2007-10-22 15:44:10 I'm all better and the chickens are gone! Yay!!
They came last night to catch them. And may I just say that...Sheesh! Those guys work fast!!!...Seriously, four guys catch around 27,000 chickens in a matter of a couple of hours. And that's just one house!
I thought I would give a bit of an explanation on why I had to pick up so many dead chickens while I was sick, for Brenda.
Well...We have from 27,000 - 30,000 chickens per house to begin. We expect to lose around 15-20 per day. That's the normal mortality rate.
Sometimes, however, they will catch a cold.
Really. You can hear their little coughs.
If that's the case, you give them medicine. Usually chlorinated water will clear up a chicken's respiratory track. Weird, huh?
If they catch a cold, your mortality rate can go up. Which is what happened with one of our houses. We had a couple of pretty big weather changes around here (going from warm nights to cold nights and back to warm nights), which probably caused it.
