A Little Water Magic 2007-08-24 14:04:57 Fridays are art days at our homeschool. Today the kids drew imaginative pictures and colored them with watercolor crayons. They loved that just a little bit of water transformed their drawing into a painting.
By the way, those aren't pajamas that Sis is wearing; that's our official school uniforms. You really believe that, don't you? Read more: Magic

Say there’s a book written about your life. Who would you want to narrate the audio version? That's easy! Jim Dale; He narrates the Harry Potter books and I love his English accent and how he does all the voices. He would make my life sound more interesting than it really is! :)

Take the letters from your favorite kind of nut and write a sentence.

If you could go back in time and spend one week in another decade, which decade would you choose? That's a hard one. I guess I would pick a decade from long ago, like the 1770's. I like colonial times, so it would be cool to check out the beginning of our country.

A New Trick 2007-08-23 21:22:56 I learned something new!
I was visiting my favorite "blogging help" website, Blogging Basics 101
Chilihead was giving a lesson on how to make a colored box around a quote. So I thought I would give it a try. Let's see...
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

My Life in Black-and-White 2007-08-23 09:00:26 If you read my blog very often, I suppose you've notice my fickleness with its design. Ugh! I just can't seem to find one I want to hold on to. However, I do have my order in with Everyday Mommy for a brand-spanking new header design. Yay!! So, while I'm anxiously awaiting the transformation of my blog, I thought I'd remove the color for a while and just go with black-and-white. Whadda think? Is it chic or boring? Read more: Black

No Joke 2007-08-23 08:17:47 While watching The Tonight Show last night, Jay Leno joked in his opening act about a recent poll that claims high school age students are having s*x less than in years past. He then dropped the punchline that it must be because of a teacher shortage. I personally don't think that is anything to joke about! Especially after reading a few of the stories here. I'll stick to homeschooling, thank you very much!
Ugh! 2007-08-22 12:48:47
After staying up so late last night, I really did not want to get up this morning! But I did it! Yes, I did! Not only that, but I made it through the complete day of school work. In the past, I probably would've ditched a subject or two, just because I didn't feel like doing them all. But this is an all new me! I'm on a mission to get things done this year and not always feel like I'm playing catch-up! So, I forced myself, droopy eyes and all, to get all the work finished.
Now, I'm exhausted and I need a little nappy. Just a little one, okay?

Don't "Croak" Without Jesus! 2007-08-28 19:09:05 I spent some time this afternoon working on my Sunday School room. I'm not quite finished with the bulletin board, so those pictures will have to wait, but here is the cute little door decoration that I came up with...

"Ah, ha, ha, ha, Stayin' Alive" 2007-08-28 13:48:43 As you know, I'm a Sunday School teacher. So, this past Sunday morning after Sunday School, I was in the ladies bathroom washing out paintbrushes. When, what do I hear? A sweet little voice singing out in the hallway. I realize it's the voice of my beloved 8 year old son, Spud. Then it hits me! What's that he's singing?
Whether you're a brother or whether you're a mother,
you're stayin' alive, stayin' alive.
Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin' alive, stayin' alive.
Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin' alive.
Yes, those are the lyrics to the religious version (obviously since it was being sung in church) of Stayin' Alive
by The Bee Gees. If you'd like to book him for your church he's available!
Our First Bump in the Road 2007-08-28 12:54:18 I must have jinxed the good flow we had going in the school area, because today was a bit more stressful. Not altogether horrible, but it wasn't as nice as it has been. What was the culprit? One word...Math! Sis really doesn't like Math. I'm guessing she will begin to like Math only if they invent a Math book that shouts out the solution before you begin the problem.
On the bright side, I didn't let any stress derail my mission to get things finished. Our first bump in the road, and we didn't let it completely throw us off. Yay!!
Now, I have some work to check and papers to grade, lessons to plan for tomorrow, and lots and lots of laundry to do. Read more: First
More Nothingness (Yep, Again!) 2007-08-27 21:32:45 We had another great day of school. I guess we are still in the "honeymoon" stage. I know there will be some stressful days in the future, but right now I'm really enjoying just spending lots of time with my kiddos.
I spent some time this evening working on the new decorations for my Sunday School class. I have the cutest sign to put on the door. I'm not quite finished, so I won't let you peek just yet, but I promise to post pictures soon.
The temperatures around here finally seem to be hinting at cooling off. Looking at the 10 day forecast for our area shows high 80s to mid 90s. That's a big difference compared to 100+ and I'm hoping it's not just a teaser.
At last, we are beginning to harvest the okra from our garden. There is nothing like fresh veggies, especially ones you've planted, watered, grown, picked and cooked yourself. Our garden has definitely been worth the effort.

Mindless Drivel 2007-08-27 00:45:07 Looking back over my entries the last couple of weeks, I'm not surprised to find a bunch of random nothingness. I want to sit down and write something meaningful, insightful, purposeful, but all I've got lately is a bunch of brain spills. I guess that's how it goes sometimes.
So in the spirit of nothingness, here goes another mindless brain purge...
Today was my last Sunday with my Sunday School class. Next week, I'll have a whole new one. I stopped by my fave store, The School Box, to grab some items to decorate my classroom. I have a great idea for a bulletin board. I'll post pictures once I get it finished.
We still don't know who will be the teacher of the other class, and they begged me to go with them, but I think I'm good where I'm at. Besides Spud made me promise I would teach him this year. That makes me feel good; that both my kids want me as their Sunday School teacher, even after being their teacher at home. I must be doing something right.
Tomorrow begins ou
Better Day Than I Expected 2007-09-02 13:55:08 All the worry and dread is over about church! Thank the Good Lord! Everyone is in their place and now we can begin working on a new year! If there was any "gnashing of teeth" (as I called it yesterday), I didn't know about it. Everything seemed to go very smooth. I got re-elected to my class. I went from having all girls to having all boys. That's a change, but I'm up for the challenge! Sis got her new teacher and seems to like her very well. I think she will do a great job. No relapses on on the grudge area either! Hallelujah! I thought with having tense feelings about the elections, that there might be opportunities for me to start feeling those bad feelings again, but thank the Lord I didn't. I still haven't had any kind of close contact with that person. I thought I might have to today, but the Lord knew what I needed and I didn't have to. So, what I thought might be a bad day, with the Lord's help, turned out to be a good one!
I decided to take two days off from school thi Read more: Expected
Go Dawgs! 2007-09-01 22:06:27 My beloved Georgia Bulldogs won their first game against Oklahoma State (35-14)!! What a way to start the season!!! GO DAWGS!!!
Avoiding the Gnashing of Teeth 2007-09-01 21:34:38 This weekend is officer and teacher elections at our church. Just to be honest, I dread this weekend every year for reasons I won't detail. Let's just say that it tends to bring out the worst in some people. Anyway, the elections take place in two different services, one of which was tonight. There were several changes, some I'm not sure I care for, but I can get used to it, I suppose. I'm not one that likes a lot of change.
Tomorrow is the teacher elections. I have my classroom decorated and ready to go. As far as I know, I will be re-elected to my class. I guess if I don't, I did a lot of decorating for another teacher! :) I'm still not sure who will be teaching Sis' class, but I'm sure she will like whoever it is.
I'll just be glad when it's all over, and hopefully I can avoid any gnashing of teeth that might take place. (Just kidding...kinda). Oh...keep praying that I won't have any relapse in the grudge area!

Figure of Speech, Mom! 2007-08-31 10:36:29 Learning to read can be a pretty frustrating experience for some. Take my little man, Spud for example. He likes to move it! Sitting still for any amount of time is very difficult for him. So when you throw reading into the process, it has the potential to be destructive. He is such a smart little guy though. He has a wonderful imagination that transports him anywhere he wishes. His vocabulary isn't too shabby either. It's one that would rival many adults. And he's working really hard on the reading and making lots of progress too!
This morning while reading to me, he became frustrated at trying to sound out a certain word. He balled his fists, clenched his teeth and said, "I feel like I could kill something!" I looked at him with a shocked, what-did-you-say look on my face. He smiled and said, "Figure of speech, Mom!"
Poor guy, I know the frustration he felt at that moment. I've been to that balled fist, teeth clenching moment many times in many areas of my life. Keep up the go Read more: Speech

The Photo 2007-08-30 20:00:59 Tonight we visited the funeral home to pay our respects to the family of one of our church deacons, who passed away after a brief battle with cancer. The funeral home is a large white house that sits atop a hill in the middle of our little town. It's a beautiful, old house that has seen many folks fill its rooms, grieving and comforting one another.
There is a certain photo framed in one of its rooms. I know its there and it seems to draw me to it each time I must visit. It's an old photo, black and white, with faded tattered edges. A small child who has clearly passed on lies dressed in a long, white gown and centered in a ring of flowers. Slid between the photo and the glass is a small, equally tattered card with the words "gone but not forgotten" carefully scripted. It then gives the child's name and "age 1 year, 11 months".
I'm not sure what it is about this photo that speaks to me so. I think about the family and the heartbreak they must have felt to lose a child so young. Read more: Photo
A Little Bit of Everything 2007-09-26 09:32:43 Last night I had some relaxing Mommy-time, and it was just wonderful! It really was so nice to go out with moms that I have a lot in common with. We were able to take our time and enjoy each others company and some yummy, delicious, scrumptious food! We compared crazy family stories and frustrating extended-family members, until we were rolling in laughter. We sat and sat just talking until we finally realized that they were closing and sadly it was time to go. I really had a wonderful time and can't wait to do it again!!
When I got home, late as it was, I searched the pay-per-view channels for a movie that was recommended by one of the moms, We are Marshall. I sat up until 2am watching that movie and crying my eyes out. True stories seem to hit me hard. That was such an emotional movie, but very good and definitely worth watching.
Hubby is off the rest of this week, which means I'm relieved of my "chicken duty" for a few days. I actually was able to sleep in a bit this morning. A Read more: Everything
Monday Morning Exhaustion 2007-09-24 09:37:32 Is it a good sign when you wake up Monday
morning completely exhausted? Yeah, I didn't think so.
My weekend was a busy one, full of "chicken duty" and I'm sure that really interests y'all too, right? You're just dying to read a post full of details about smelly, dead chickens and worse, aren't ya? Once again, I didn't think so. I'll be kind and spare you the agony.
Both Spud and Sis woke up Sunday with soar throats and stuffy noses. Lord, please don't let this last all winter. It seems once they start, it continues until spring.
Spud has decided to be a Star Wars Clone Trooper for halloween. I had to order his costume off the internet, since, of course, he picked something you can't find in any store. Now each morning I'm awakened with the question, "Do you think this will be the day my package comes?" I guess the $40 bucks it would have cost to over-night it might have been worth it after all.
They opened a new Olive Garden Italian Restaurant close to us and I'm pla Read more: Morning

A Still Small Voice 2007-09-22 17:29:02 There have been many times that I've let little annoying things that bother me build up until I reach a breaking point. It's truly not one of my best qualities. I realize that if I would just let go of each of those things when they happen, they wouldn't build up, and I would save a lot of trouble. However, I'm not always that thoughtful.
For example, the other day something small and insignificant happened during school. It was the last straw. I knew immediately that I had "done it again". I called "break time" and headed for the shower. Now, when I give myself the opportunity to pout, I can convince myself that I am the most unfortunate soul on earth. That's pretty much the way I was headed. Reliving all of the past wrongs that had been done to me and pitying myself all the more.
Fortunately, I have something inside me that speaks peace. A still small voice that whispers when all the other voices in me are crying out in anger and frustration. I hear that voice above all other Read more: Small
