UK-based Nokia Siemens R&D centre sold to Aricent

US-based communications software firm Aricent has acquired an R&D centre in Southwood, UK, from Nokia Siemens Networks with 100 employees specialising in GSM and EDGE. The deal was announced as part of an R&D collaboration with Nokia Siemens Networks to provide product development, feature enhancement, sustenance and maintenance services for 2G basestation products. A spokeswoman for Aricent said the firm had taken over just the R&D wing at the Nokia Siemens’ Southwood site, which is near Farnborough. Any money paid was not disclosed. This will be Aricent’s third European software development centre joining centres in Germany and the Ukraine. “The UK centre gives Aricent a large development presence in a third European location,” said Manoranjan Mohapatra, president of Aricent. “The Southwood team will allow us to meet the needs of both Nokia Siemens Networks and other clients in the UK and Western Europe,” continued Mohapatra.

More Taiwan handset makers are focusing on the production of smartphones with three makers – BenQ, Inventec Appliances and Gigabyte Communications – all planning to launch new Windows Mobile 6-based models this month or in the second half of this year, according sources at the companies. BenQ plans to launch two smartphones, the E72 and T80, in the second half, with the E72 being BenQ’s first phone to support the UMA (unlicensed mobile access) standard and the T80 being the company’s first handset to support the NFC (near field communications) standard, said company sources. The E72 and T80 will be marketed under the company’s own BenQ-brand instead of BenQ-Siemens dual-brand, the sources added.
