May 29: Ins and Outs 2007-05-29 17:08:00 In: Pucci-inspired printsOut: Black & whiteAlthough black and white will always be a runway staple (i.e. Chanel), the yin and yang color combo just doesn't seem right for summer. As an alternative, try punchy, whimsical, brightly-colored prints a la Pucci to take your warm weather wardrobe on a psychedelic color trip. You don't want to look like an extra in an Austin Powers movie though, so just include a touch of the print in your outfit...a pair of shorts, a tote bag, or better yet, one of those famous Pucci scarves to pull your frizzy summer hair back, a look that Jacki O loved...and who wouldn't want to look like her? My Five Favorite Things 2007-05-25 19:27:00 Soooo, I've decided that every Friday, I'm going to post the top five fashion/beauty items I am currently longing for...just a few of my favorite things that I think you might fall in love with too! Hopefully you'll enjoy them as much as I do :)Rafe's "Halle" Seahorse Sandals: I love all things sea-inspired, and these flat sandals accented with an enameled rhinestone-encrusted seahorse make me want to set sail on the high seas and leave all my landlubbing cares behind ($324.99 at shop.com).Turk + Taylor's Fleur-di-Lis Scoopneck T-shirt in Violet: This is a purchase that I can feel really good about: at $46, it won't put a dent in my moola, and it's made of hand-dyed, organic cotton, so it does some good for the planet too. And it just happens to be adorable on top of that ($46 at turkandtaylor.com).Marc by Marc Jacobs "Maired" Dot Sundress: Needs no explanation, this cute little thing stands all on its own :) ($298 at net-a-porter.com).Chantecaille Limited-Edition Jay Strongwate Read more:Favorite
Leather Sandals That Are Comfy AND Chic! 2007-05-24 21:19:00 An oxymoron, do you say? Most of the time, leather sandals tend to be associated with the Birkenstock-wearing, granola-loving, haven't-showered-for-weeks, earthy types (admit it, that's the image that sprang to your mind). But the days of all the hippies getting to wear the comfy shoes are no more. For those of us gals who would rather suffer in stilletos than don a flat, brown, non click-clacking shoe, the truly chic leather sandal has finally arrived. To look less Birkenstock-ish and more stylish, try the gladiator style made popular by Gucci's Spring 2007 collection. Don't have the budget of a Roman emperor? A cheaper option than Gucci are Anthroplogie's "Pompeii" sandals, made ultra-modern with gilded bronze leather ($148 at anthropologie.com).For you arty types who just can't bear to wear a plain leather sandal, check out Rafe's "Union Square Uma" patent leather sandals in a sassy fire engine red ($206 at bloomingdales.com), Kate Spade's "Frankie" leather thong sandals with Read more:Leather

Booth's Bath Products are Cheap, Luxurious and...Witty? 2007-05-22 18:45:00 I will admit it, one of my most favorite activities is to walk into a Walgreen's and pillage the shelves of nail polish, hair glossers, tan-building lotions, and countless shades of lipsticks. I think that I alone may be keeping Walgreen's in business. But one of my favorite products on the discount pharmacy's shelves these days is Booth
's bath products. Looking deceptively like Kiehl's products in their white packaging with tiny print, Booth's is a great bang for your buck. For just $5.99, you can pick up a huge bottle of their Lavender Mineral Bath Soak (one of my personal faves) that even includes clever commentary on the label: "So you've had it up to here and can't stand it one more minute. Maybe you're just cranky. Pull yourself together with a bath infused with this addictive additive." And it really does work, it has pulled me out of some of my ickiest moods. Their "Breathe Easy" body wash is great for anyone for a cold, or even asthma, and will feel and smell like you Read more:Products

May 21: Ins and Outs 2007-05-21 17:52:00 In: Vintage rhinestonesOut: Wooden jewelryYou know what I'm tired of? Hearing the clunk, clunk, clunk of multiple wooden bracelets banging in to each other as girls attempt to also wield their giant purse, a latte and a Blackberry to boot. No one ever said fashion had to be practical, but does it have be so loud? Instead, try a classier(and much more quiet) vintage rhinestone braceletfor an unexpected touch to your summer ensembles. For day, avoid looking too Marilyn and think Carrie Bradshaw and pair a white rhinestone bracelet or choker-length necklace with a sundress and espadrilles. And for night, it's a no-brainer: a little black dress paired with your vintage jewels will do just fine. Where to find these inexpensive little baubles? Look no further than your favorite local antique store, flea market or Ebay, dahling, but just be sure that no stones are missing, the clasp works and that the stones are white, not gray or dusty, and you'll be a regular Audrey Hepburn in a flash. In:
These Bath Salts Make Me Feel Like a "Queen B" 2007-05-15 18:56:00 Fair trade is all the rage these days, and bath salts are no exception. Queen
B bath salts are made fairly by a group of New Orleans women (many of which are single mothers) who need a second income but can't leave home to do it. As a result, their group, the "Soapbox Moms," was born, and so were their wildly-popular bath products. Inspired by the smells of New Orleans, the bath salts, made up of Dead Sea Salt and essential oils, come in three main scents: pink grapegruit, basin woods and night-blooming jasmine. I'm a personal fan of basin woods. The smell reminds me of wandering through a cedar forest and just has a really good woody, earthy scent that fills my whole bathroom. To help out these moms (and yourself in the process!), you can purchase Queen B bath salts at www.fairindigo.com.

to get the scoop on what trends are just starting to make their grand debut, and which ones are being put out to fashion trend pasture. Hopefully this will cheer up those fashionistas out there who are currently suffering from a mean "case of the Mondays." :)In: Animals in jewelry Out: Animal printsOkay, I know there's some readers who are disagreeing with this one. Wearing zebra-print ballet flats is always a chic choice, and can add an exotic touch to an outfit that needs it. The animal prints that I am tired of are the ones worn head-to-toe...leopard-print leggings, leopard flats, leopard t-shirt...and animal prints that are done in a trying-too-hard way. *Cough cough Paris Hilton cough* Instead, try getting in touch with your wild side through wearing animals in your jewelry...a snake ring or bracelet from Kenneth Jay Lane, a vintage owl necklace, or a rhinoceros pendant necklace from Target. Intermix Chicago is Officially Open! 2007-05-14 09:37:00 Matthew Williamson's Cropped Rainbow Jacket from IntermixIntermix, the trendy, NYC-based boutique known for being a designer-label paradise, has graced the Midwest with its oh-so-stylish presence. Intermix opened in Chicago
last month to a fashion-hungry hoard of Midwesterners ready to snatch up Chloe stacked heels, R.E.D. Valentino bubble minis, M Missoni halter dresses, Sass & Bide denim, Thread Social's geometric trapeze dress, and the list could go on and on and on....The Midwest has waited long enough for such a high-fashion one-stop-shop to come our way, and I have a feeling Intermix will find just as many devotees in Chicago as they have in New York. Yeah, there's fewer people in Chicago, but I think we can all agree that maybe we're just a bit more hungry for fashion labels here than our New York cousins :) Intermix Chicago is located at 40 East Delaware Place. Can't make it to the Windy City? Check out Intermix's website at www.intermixonline.com.
Let Wendy Build Your Spring Wardrobe 2007-05-12 13:36:00 Recently, while researching for an article on nautical trends for summer, I came across one of the most inventive and original clothing brands I've seen in a while. It's called Built by Wendy
, the clothing line of NYC-based designer Wendy Mullin. She's been designing for about 10 years, and judging from the photos of her previous collections, I think her nautical-inspired Spring
2007 is her best yet. Her line is characterized by pieces that range far across the fashion trend spectrum, with a little whimsy thrown in for good measure: madras-print minidresses, denim knickers, sailor-stripe tank dresses, and totally unique t-shirts that will be sure to elicit a "Where did you get that??" I've got my eye on her "boatless sail" tee. To view the whole collection, visit www.builtbywendy.com and start building your new spring wardrobe. Read more:Build

A.V. Max...Minimum Price, Maximum Jewelry 2007-05-11 10:39:00 One of my favorite jewelry lines at the moment is A.V. Max because 1) They carry beautiful pieces that are right on-trend and 2) It's actually cheap! But is not in any way cheaply-made. I first learned of the brand on a visit to everyone's favorite Midwest luxury store, Twigs, and got rather frustrated when I couldn't afford a pair of dangly, blue topaz-encrusted earrings that cost more than my rent, but then...Could it be?...a heavy gold bangle for $22...a pair of adorable gold bee-shaped earrings for $24. Can this be right? Are they on sale? Are the fashion gods that kind?? And lo and behold, those were the actual prices, which was pretty unbelieveable considering the pieces look way more expensive than they are with their use of colored crystals, hammered gold, and excellent craftsmanship (trust me, you have to see them in person to believe it). Visit www.shoptwigs.com or www.avmaxaccessories.com to score one of these little beauties...or maybe a few more since you can afford it. Read more:Minimum

Lollia Products are Lovely 2007-05-11 09:56:00 After hearing that there was a lotion that even Oprah couldn't live without (anything that the Divine Miss O loves is fine by me...), I had to try it out for myself. I went online to find out where I could pick some up some Lollia locally, and became mesmerized by their website...soothing pinks and blues, curly lettering, and fluffy little angels adorn the page. And when I finally saw the product in person, I found that the packaging was just as beautiful as their website, like the glass candles printed with French floral designs, complete with a chandelier crystal that hangs from the uncut wick, lotions packaged in vintage-inspired toothpaste tubes...even the bubble bath comes in a tall, old-fashioned glass wine bottle. And of course, the scents are just as lovely as the packaging that surrounds them. My favorite is "Relax," a combination of lavender and honey that's sure to melt away any icky feelings. I've been using the Shea butter hand cream in this scent like nobody's busines Read more:Products

My Five Favorite Things 2007-06-01 08:20:00 J. Crew's French-stripe Peacoat Sweater: Ever since I first spotted this stripey little number at a recent visit to J. Crew, I haven't been able to get it out of my head. When I walk into my closet, I keep picturing it hanging there. When I'm looking for something to throw over a white t-shirt on a cool night, I reach for it, and realize to my dismay, it's not there...I may just have to crack open the ol' piggy bank for this one, it's too cute and too perfect for summer to pass up ($160 at jcrew.com and store locations). And wouldn't it look perfect with....J. Crew's Lobster-print St. Barth Bag (see model above!): Alright, I know J. Crew is getting double billing in today's "Favorite
Things," but I'm just loving this lobster bag right now. The ideal summer bag in so many ways: the lobster print flows with the nautical trend, it will go perfectly with all the khaki, whites, and blues I wear in the summer, and it's canvas, so if I happen to spill a margarita on it, I won't fee
You Made My Blue Eyes Blue 2007-05-31 08:50:00 As a blue-eyed gal, the idea of there being a mascara out there that can make my baby-blues look even bluer caught my eye when I was browsing on Sephora recently. The product is Benefit's "Bad Gal Blue" mascara and promises to make eyes look whiter, brighter, and bluer...but at $19 for just a tube of mascara, I decided to keep searching for a lower-priced version. And boy, did I find it. Almay's Intense i-Color Bring Out Lengthening mascara for blue eyes. When I use it, I look more awake, refreshed, and it takes my eyes from pale blue to sapphire in an instant. And at $7.49, it's a price that won't make me blue...just my eyes :)
I'm in Love...with Tory Burch 2007-06-02 20:02:00 I won't lie- I have a new love in my life these days, and it's someone other than my fiance (cue shock and awe here...). Her name is Tory Burch
, a name that I'm sure is already quite familiar to many of you, and I could live in her current collection 24-7...sigh...if she only made Tory Burch pajamas. When I stopped into Twigs this past week, I got up and close and personal with Tory's pieces for spring/summer...the navy and white ruffled "Rachel" tank with a fun graphic floral print...the latest take on her now-famous tunics, a white and navy embroidered version in super-soft terrycloth...the very mod "Melanie" dress in a punchy geometric print... all with an impeccable attention to detail and craftsmanship that just scream luxury. Overall, the line just keeps getting better with every season, and I think the current line proves that Tory Burch has really started to come into her own as a full-fledged, force-to-be-reckoned-with fashion designer(shop at shoptwigs.com or toryburch.co
Ins and Outs 2007-06-06 08:43:00 Sorry that this a bit late this week, girlies! In: Striped heelsOut: Boring black heelsYes, a black heel will never go out of style...but when you're in the mood to not play it safe, why don't you pull on a pair of fresh, fun striped heels to kick it up a notch. They are more matchable than you think...picture them with a pair of khaki capris, a cute lil' pair of denim shorts, or even try a red-striped pair with a blue-striped skirt if you're feeling extra bold. At shoes.com, you'll find striped heels in red and navy from Naughty Monkey ($79.99), or if you've got a little more dough on your hands, go for the Kors Michael Kors cork-heeled, open-toed striped heels in navy or dark red ($194.99).In: Red and white (see above)Out: Dark color combos, like dark green with burgundy, etc.The red and white color combo has been popping up in tons of pieces for spring/summer, especially red embroidery on a white linen top, like this one from DKNY. Melt Away Stress, Not Your Budget 2007-06-05 07:50:00 There are plenty of stress relievers out there that cost a pretty penny. Lavender-infused facial ($150), head-to-toe massage ($300), vacation to the Caribbean (now you're broke...). Want to try a product that promises to melt away your stress and give you a good night's sleep for only $5.99? Then look no further than Johnson's new line of anti-stress products, "Melt Away Stress," in a 24-hour moisturizing wash and "dreamy" night lotion. Studies show that it works for 4 out of 5 women. So what's in the stuff that makes you drift into dreamland? Lavender, of course, and a scent called "Aromasoothe" that claims to quiet the senses. From my personal experience with the night lotion, I've gotta tell ya that it works; whenever I use it, I am almost always guaranteed a full night of uninterrupted sleep. So cozy up with a bottle of Johnson's Melt Away Stress night lotion and drift off to a place where the air is warm, the palms are swaying, the facials are free, and the massages are given
My Five Favorite Things 2007-06-08 08:31:00 Coach "Signature" Bangle in "Punch": I knew it would only be a matter of time before Coach would start banging out these logo bangles to match the logo bag hanging from one's arm. They have several of these new bracelets available on the website (ranging from $68-$198), but my pick is the signature bangle in my most favorite shade of pink...and, it costs a lot less than the Coach patchwork hobo I've been eyeing ($128 at coach.com and store locations).Burberry Espadrille Thong Sandals: I looove these sandals...they are the combination of my two favorite shoes for summer: flip-flops and espadrilles. Together, I bet they make for one comfy shoe that can take you from walking all day to being on your feet all night. And at $150, at least you can having something in your closet in that classic Burberry check...you'll save a bit more money than if you bought that $800 Burberry trench you've been coveting ($150 at burberry.com or store locations).Shay Todd Pink Shell "Hampton" Tunic and M Read more:Favorite
Be Back Soon! 2007-06-14 08:15:00 Hi girlies! You've probably noticed that I've not been posting this week...I'm taking a lil break from the blog at the moment because I am SWAMPED with work, but I will return very soon with all new tips and trend news, I promise! Have a lovely weekend :)
I'm Smitten with Bitten 2007-06-18 18:54:00 Hello ladies! I'm back! I've finally crawled out from under all this work I've been doing lately and am reassuming my post as a dedicated trendspotter for my blog :) So enjoy! When Sarah Jessica Parker's new clothing and accessories line Bitten came to Steve and Barry's discount stores nationwide on June 7, you better believe that I was there on its inaugural day to scarf up the first shipment of SJP's fab (and surprisingly cheap) designs. Even though SJP happens to be one of my favorite people in the world, I was honestly a tad skeptical because 1) It had gotten a bit of a bad rap on the fashion blogs and 2) Sarah Jessica Parker, who lives in Oscar de la Renta, is designing low-cost clothes for the masses? Too good to be true. But you can believe all the hype. Some people were saying the line isn't true to SJP's style (too basic, some were saying), but based upon all those paparazzi shots of her on the street (and perhaps something her alter-ego Carrie Bradshaw would've whipped
Five Favorite Things 2007-06-22 10:50:00 It's Friday! Time to do a little pseudo-shopping and tell you all about the items I am currently coveting.... :)Lacoste "Twirl Chrome" Sneakers: Metals are all the rage these days, and have even found their way on to casual sneakers. What better way to take your sneaks from everyday to upscale with just a little flash of gold leather? I'm loving these new kicks from Lacoste in sort of a chromy, pinky hue...metallic, but not too obvious, with just a hint of girliness ($150 at lacoste.com or store locations).Marc by Marc Jacobs Tote: I never thought I would say "Marc Jacobs" and "$12" in the same sentence. But, this time, I can, with Marc Jacobs' new Marc by Marc shopping tote for ONLY $12!!! That's the same price for a tote from Target, so why not pick one up for a little cheap designer fix? Ins and Outs 2007-06-26 09:15:00 Out: Expensive Designer PiecesIn: Design on a dimeThinking about blowing your rent money on that Chloe bag or Louboutins? While designer labels will always be a fashionista's holy grail, the price points are almost never realistic for everyday girls like you and me who need to save their money to pay for, um, those little things like food, shelter, gas, etc.? Too bad they haven't come out with edible shoes yet. But until then, you don't have to sacrifice style to pay the bills. Big-time designers have become more aware than ever of the fact that regular gals covet their designer looks, but don't have, say, $5,000 or more to blow on a couture gown.If you fall in this category, check out the lower-priced labels of some of the most worshipped designers of today, like O Oscar by Oscar de la Renta for Macy's (nothing's over $100 and it was recently announced that line will start offering jewelry), Nicole by Nicole Miller for JC Penney (which features dresses that are so like her high-
Peaceful (and Pungeant!) Pacifica 2007-06-28 22:32:00 Being the very girly girl that I am, it will probably come as no surprise to you that I love anything that smells strong and flowery. But I'm not talking your garden variety rose or lilac single note scents (borrrrrring....). I'm talking about the unexpected scent combos that Pacifica puts together in each of their handmade soy candles, body butters, soaps and perfumes. We're not talking "Spring Meadow", "Ocean Breeze," or (insert other cliche scent title here)...Pacifica specializes in exotic fragrances like Egyptian Bergamot Rose, Waikiki Pikake, Caribbean Sugar Pumpkin and my personal fave, Tibetan Mountain Temple (sooooo soothing...). The names of the scents alone make you feel all warm and fuzzy. They always seem to have a sale on something (right now their new scent, Moroccan Chamomile Apple Blossom is 20% off), and their candles last FOREVER...a 2x3 round travel candle lasts me about a year. Ins and Outs and Five Favorite Things Is No Longer... 2007-07-08 19:52:00 Hi girlies! I just wanted to let you know that I've decided to retire my Monday "Ins and Outs" and Friday "Five Favorite
Things" because I'd rather just write about things that generally inspire me from day to day instead of following a schedule. I may do special blogs from time to time featuring Ins and Outs or My Five Favorite things based on the new fall runway looks or I've had an especially jam-packed week filled with things I would love to go out and buy. Organic Fiji Is Paradise in a Bottle 2007-07-08 19:35:00 Although I haven't lived anywhere near an ocean for my entire life, I have always been drawn to all-things-tropical, from picking up seashells on the beach to loving anything that smells like coconut. That's why my new favorite brand of bath products is Organic
Fiji, a line of lotions, soaps, oils and body polishes that transport me instantly to the tropics. The main ingredient in all Organic Fiji products is coconut oil, which smells incredible and has too many beauty benefits to name. Recently, I picked up their Pineapple Coconut lotion for face and body and I've gotta say it's one of the best moisturizers I've ever used- thick and creamy, lasts for hours, and smells like a stronger version of suntan lotion (smell memory...I'm in Florida, in a hammock, sipping a pina colada...). And yes, as its name suggests, all the products are organic, so they not only benefit you, but the planet too. Overall, AMAZING line, one of the best I've ever come across. Feel Good in E-Street Denim 2007-07-06 14:33:00 "Flower Power" T-Shirt from E-StreetDenim
'sFeel Good T-Shirt CompanyIn the Midwest, there's a few things that are never in short supply: cows, cheese, more cheese, and denim. We Midwesterners do love our blue jeans (worn on the street, to class, for cocktails...), but something that is most definitely in short supply here are stores that specialize in high-quality, designer jeans. But I recently made a discovery that debunks this idea...a boutique located in Lake Geneva and Highland Park called E Street that specializes in more than decent denim and adorable comfy t-shirts. At the boutiques (and on the website), you'll find the denim labels you thought only the Hollywood elite had easy access to...Hudson, True Religion, J Brand, Paige, 7 For All Mankind, Tsubi, Chip & Pepper, even William Rast. You name it, they've probably got it. They also have a humongous selection of chic (but still cute and casual) t-shirts from cult companies like Sharon Segal, Michael Stars, and Splendi
Get Roped In to Nantucket Knot Works 2007-07-10 09:31:00 Nantucket Knot Works
' Turk's Head BraceletsSome trends can look just plain fake sometimes. Take for example this summer's big nautical trend-- girls walking down the street in giant gold anchor necklaces, you'd think they're rappers sporting some major bling; head scarves that make girls look less like fashionistas and more like extras from Pirates of the Caribbean; so many stripes from head to toe that a girl can look like she's on her way to a Regatta instead of just heading out for drinks...When will this maritime madness end?If you're the kind of girl who'd rather look authentic than costumey when trying the nautical trend, look no further than Nantucket Knot Works. As its name suggests, they're a Nantucket-based company that weaves authentic rope bracelets, belts, necklaces, etc., not unlike the ones you've probably seen at J. Crew. Beautifully pieced together in a wide variety of colors and styles, you're sure to find something that give just that little touch of nauti
Affordable? Louis Vuitton? Don't Toy With Me! 2007-07-13 15:05:00 "Monogram Canvas Mini Accessories Pouch"Yes, ladies...there is such a thing as "afforable" Louis
Vuitton. It may not be one of their famous steamer suitcases (ka-ching...$2,700) or a Speedy 30 (starting at the low low price of $1,400), but it is possible for everyday gals like you and me to own a lil' piece of Louis. I especially love the "Monogram Canvas Mini Accessories Pouch," an adorable little pouchette reminiscent of my "Globe Shopper" Louis of a couple seasons ago hanging in my closet with its "Louis Vuitton
Trunks & Bags" logo, and is a lot less expensive at only $255 (think of it as not eating out for a month...your waistline and your handbag collection will thank you for it...). Or the "Sweet Monogram Pastel Earrings" in a set of three for $230 (what a deal...). Or perhaps the "Poche Toilette 19" makeup bag at $255 that can easily pass for a chic clutch as well. There's even a "Monogram Canvas iPod Nano Case" at $245 so you can fully look the part of the pretentious tec
Prada's Unique Clutches for Fall 2007-07-19 17:04:00 Even though it's only July and cool temps are far from our minds, the fall fashion ads are already starting to creep into fashion mags, giving us a little taste of what we'll all be wearing next season. One thing that has really caught my eye for fall are Prada
's new unique clutch bags. These aren't your mama's clutches; in fact, they may encourage several double-takes from passerbys on the street. These bags include an outer "pocket" in which a hand is placed when holding it, making it a little easier to "clutch" the bag. Think of it as a similar concept to the muff, but one-handed. It can look a bit disconcerting to look like one hand is "missing," but it's actually quite a practical little clutch for day that's easy to hold on to. You can carry it on errands and still be able to cart your groceries around. How's that for multi-tasking chic? I especially love the style with the large bow attached. Although the price tag of these out-of-the-ordinary clutches I'm sure is astro
I Love Libertine! 2007-07-17 17:39:00 Is anyone else super-excited about Target's newest Go International line, Libertine
?! They debuted the line this weekend (and unfortunately I've been out of town and unable to see it in person...) but so far from what I've seen and heard, I'm impressed. It's a mix of adorably-feminine stuff...blouses with big, girly bows, ruffles and lace detailing, prepster pieces with a bit of a hard edge...like their embroidered skirt with whale and skull-and-crossbones detailing (think J. Crew gone punk)...and lower-priced versions of their famous screen-printed t-shirts (like birds, trees, and skulls). I especially love their navy blue blazer with white piping...very fresh and chic...and their black and white lace bolero...vintage-inspired and at the same time modern. It's an eclectic collection that suits anyone from prepsters to punky gals...this may be Target's best Go International collection yet! Pick up a little Libertine at Target locations or Target.com.
