Almanac (ISSN No: 1071-4391) is inviting papers and artworks that deal with the emerging practice of data visualization as an immersive experience. Data has long been the property and domain of screen based collection, archiving, processing and interaction. The emergence of new processes, functionality and ways of interacting with information is opening up several new areas of great possibility in which the data allows newfound thematic a

Some cool clouds blossoming up at times in other high grey while I waited 5 hours for my car to get fixed and became as close as one wants to be with a donut shop. Been mostly working on some writing and a possible project using ar and gps in exhibition as in "Immersive Sight" .Here is a quick little image I just made while taking a break. Let's hope this ad campaign does not become real soon although we are heading this way more and more now that CNN changed to a Fox clone to vie for ratings and real news officially died here in America.[tagname]

Is something of another era that still resonates a mirror, a portal, a paralellism, an echo of the present (as tenuous and ephemeral as present, now and new are of course in their near ghostflesh in the face of contexts, time and progression)?W&S 030 - Video Moroso - V-V-V-V-V-VCRWhat is appropriation and sampling in relation to archaeology? How are artifacts colored by their time....its semiotics....its cliche's....and how it mutates in the rear view ? What is the progression and is it in pieces or is it more mote by mote, atom by atom erasure into the "now" skidding along into its ephemerality and end? How does this relate to dissent? To protest? one of the things that happens to questioning and dissent and its semiotics in time and in image in (re)contexualitions 2007-07-21 20:15:00 It gets commodified......gutted into vacuous balloon cliche and distortion in mass media, pop culture and its opposing side(s)one of the things
that we now have with technology and web 2.0 is the way to purely disseminate opposing views, muckraking, investigative journalism, attempts at clarity in the face of the cyclops that increasingly is the major news outlet and this time...semiotics isn't just for art........or advertising for that matter......dissent is now seen often as the bloated corpse of previous incarnations of it....spun back deftly by those that wish to suppress it and belittle it...undercut...it is seen as disorganized, slow in reaction, reactionary, overly idealistic, biased, factionalized by pet causes, impotent and above all antiquated (ie:the familiar aging tropes of signs and liberals milling about in some unempowered and disconnected malaise)you tube.....flickr......social networks...im...rss.....feeds.....this has the potential for an immediacy, reach and org Read more:questioning
jeremy blake 2007-08-02 19:10:00 We had the same first name. We both went to the same school around the same time (Cal Arts). We had been distantly crossing in certain circles. Found out recently that one of my friends knew him at Cal Arts. I don't have anything really clever or wistful to say, but just need to say something. It is like something near me yet far off has died. He was one of us (us being new media folk, hybrid minds and works, part of the cal arts crew). Now "us" is a little smaller. I can't imagine what those moments on the train must have been like, yet again in a distant way I can get glimpses. I went through a pretty severe depression as a teen. My terminally ill mother attempted suicide just after my girlfriend and I broke up and my identity was weighted down with the teasing for being shy, for my bad leg, the usual teen angst mostly, but that bit more. I was 17. I kept thinking of my first girlfriend of sorts that was in the chemo ward they put me in when in second grade tests were done

architecture of narrative 2007-08-13 02:46:00 Working on a series of visualizations of the layered structure and forms of narrative as presented as a layered graphic. The unseen is laid out clean like in this case a floorplan for a multi-story residence with basement. I want to work more with typography in this regard, but also in transposing textuality and form and design as there is a clear translation in both of the unseen as well as the structure within.[tagname]

some fiction I have been working on based on my childhood into college years set in the rooms of the house and the weight in their spaces 2007-08-30 16:31:00 Surely There Will Be FlowersThis place and all of its rooms once held many voices, noises, guests, family events, the chaos of days. There are sounds, signs of life, but a collective silence now drives televisions in two of its rooms. The woman in the back bedroom keeps it on as a companion and a light from somewhere else. The boy upstairs just cuts the quiet with it. Ina few hours the delivery man will rumble up the drive in his brown truck, bring flowers to leave at the door but for now it is mostly quiet here. There is the sound of a bathtub, filling, a claw foot, white as bone porcelain. It is coming from the upstairs bathroom. There is the sound of a hand testing the temperature. There is then the sound of a hand pulling back with little drops of waters falling. Steam now. A squeak of knob as it turns. With heavy steps an older woman, possessor of the thick fingers and red, red nails approaches the bath. Splashing as her toes hit the water, right foot just off.A foot Read more:working

narratives of absence. 2007-09-12 21:40:00 Toying with ideas of narratives of absence
. How can narratives be constructed with all the tropes but describing what isn't there, what is lost, what could have been, alternate possibilities forever unborn due to chains of events or singular choices back in the past. Can a story world be formed that is textually or graphically and aurally indicative purely of what is not..described in deep detail of what could have been or simply is not to be in sequence and in immersion? Glad to see that the Discussion Group on Immersive Visualization on google is getting going. Should be interesting.[tagname]

I was just walking early in the morning to work on another cold morning. The experiment of walking in the cold was invigorating, nicely off kilter in a way, freezing of course in a way like needles on my nose (couldn't cover everything), an adventure in a way I guess and it brought me to him. Six in the morning and he was fused to a pole with ice, his mouth open like words were going to tumble out in cold brief clouds. His eyes were open like he was still waiting for the ride that didn't come. I looked closer and saw more little horrors. His eyes were open sewers, his nose hairs were iced over like the fe

Fires here in southern california 2007-10-23 23:05:00 My wife and I went to Camarillo on Saturday for a little one day mini honeymoon (got married oct 6 ) and awoke Sunday to sheets of dust and small branches flying past the windows. We ate at a funky little Mexican restaurant as the wind blew the metal roof so hard that it was groaning and twisting. We drove to Santa Clarita to see my old friend and 34 north collaborator Jeff Knowlton and as we went to lunch we saw a thin haze....in the time it took for our meal to come it had gone red black......it was the Agua Dulce fire and we could see distant flames.... we left as it flew 15 miles in a few hours and burned into the south end of Jeff's Neighborhood of Canyon Country. It almost burned my father's house where the wedding was. Then it became apparent as to the scope of all this. The total lost homes is nearing 2000The total evacuation is nearing one millionThe smoke covers hundreds of miles just as hundreds of acres have burnedthe winds are calming down but the larger fi
looking at the window (another alternative present's autobiography ) 2007-11-12 16:53:00 The man born from the boy above is not up late reflecting on his life. He has not been a Psychologist for several years. He has not earned a private practice, a nice office on Ventura boulevard, a receptionist and a view of the cars whizzing past the courtyard. He has also not had those nightmares. He does not dream of others moments that he can not speak of or of drowning slowly in storms at sea. He did not take the ability to interpret symbolism, body language and personalities and behavior and make it his career all this time.He did not carry the ballast of other's pain. At least not this way.He changed his major back to English after that one semester nearly 20 years ago. The decision came oddly out of a clear blue day of calm sitting on the campus lawn eating a salad. His mother was dying. She had attempted suicide just 2 years before. This brought many dreams of winds blowing out windoglass into snow in slow motion onto her...he unable to stop it.......of her mouth that for many Read more:autobiography

locative media applications of geometric event time measure and topology 2008-02-16 14:56:00 The concept in a literal (and ambitious) sense is a possible new tool for time lines in many fields and their documentation, study and analysis. The analysis is of a period of time and a complex array of information/data within that period time in its parts to whole in a multi-layered and active/fluid in progression way.In terms of locative media
it can push the verticality/spatiality of locative data in some interesting and key ways. The complexity of an event
as a space can be shown as fluid, shifting and in a way that is clear as an immersive visualization. There are many aspects of what occurs in time, of what informs it, comes from it, feeds and shapes it that are spatial and needing of a visualization. You could see the aspects of a space in time and in a way that could create a

This appears to be important as it can work on several levels to eliminate the arbitrary in spatial to numerical corrolations. The input/output model also goes into an interesting comparison to a cumulus or cumulus to cumulonimbus cloud in its event lifetime, dynamics, measure and multipl
more notes on time as horizontal and vertical as well as width of event time 2008-02-08 18:08:00 Super busy lately with stuff. Have about 15 pages of further notes since the last post. Will touch on a few points as I keep working.Time (as we quantify and thus "tame" it in measure)= a man made gridSpace in latitude and longitude ( as we quantify it)= a man made gridMath = man made forms and grid and non grid spaceexperiential memory= non gridded depth and density within memory components (image,spatialization,semantics,logic,distortion/non distortion/associative properties, storage to trigger....)So event
time has space, measure and density, yet is plastic and fluid beyond geometric forms and line segments. Thus, a "true" time line would be a fluid shifting 3d immersive space within movement through its segmentation/striation by its very nature besides the emotional component of
mapping time in immersive 3d ...locative media...new media...augmented reality...mapping.. 2008-01-07 21:03:00 Been working out some concepts that have been hitting me and gradually coming together...it is still very rough..I tried a few years ago to map time as intervals and corrolate it directly to a person moving in a space. It was intriguing, but ultimately to the artist and semi-scientist in me it was ultimately a dead end. Why? The measure was ultimately arbitrary as one cannot set something spatially that is a corollate between space, location and time in grid space and real space for the reason that the person will move at different speeds at different times and people move in different cadences and speeds relative to others anyway.So...What if the corrolate is instead a sort of non-euclidain geometry....a spherical topology in a sense of what is experienced in time and space and that can Read more:media

immersive 3d mapping and event time 2008-04-05 22:51:00 Time lines and maps have long been functional, simple and imbued with sometimes complex and dark subtexts. The map over time needs to change, to be adjusted. It also is something that, although pragmatically useful, is an artifice of man placed against the landscape in the same way that time and our selected system has been placed against something more open and malleable that is now constricted in something full of tension and ultimately arbitrary. There are borders. They are drawn along places but also along ideas. Each is an opening into both form and recognition and the darker places within humanity and human desire, fear and avarice. The need is for new systems of mapping and of time lines to capture event
