Clinton and Vilsack
2007-05-28 19:35:24
Seems Tom Vilsack has been spending a lot of time helping Hillary. The Politico thinks he’s working to get a spot as VP is Hillary wins the nomination. He probably is, but I really hope Hillary is smarter than that. This election is going to be about change; America is ready for some big changes after all these years of Bush. In my opinion Hillary would be better served picking Obama or Richardson as her running mate. Obama has the youthful appeal and, of course, is African-American. Richardson has more experience than anyone on the planet and would be a huge boost for the skyrocketing Hispanic population in this country. I think having a Woman/Minority ticket (to put it bluntly) would look pretty darn good next to the inevitable Old White Man/Old White Man ticket of the Republicans.

Don’t Let the Door Hit You on the Way Out
2007-05-28 14:00:24
Cindy Sheehan has “resigned” her position as the “face of the anti-war movement.” She wrote a diary over at DailyKos called “Good Riddance Attention Whore”. While the title is clearly meant sarcastically, and truthfully is a bit rude, I have to say I pretty much agree. I liked Cindy Sheehan, I really did. But then she screwed up to such a great degree that I had to speak out. I do not support, nor do I have much respect for, Cindy Sheehan. I’ll let my comment on her diary explain: I USED to like you… But then it became clear you were interested more in protesting in and of itself than in actually ending the war. You held a protest in Sacramento at the end of October 2006. This is literally right next to CD-04 where Charlie Brown was running to take out John Doolittle (the MOST corrupt member of congress). But it’s a district that also thinks very little of you, Cindy. Your presence just a week before the election hurt

Soldiers Tired of the War
2007-05-27 21:00:59
As if there was any doubt that things were getting worse in Iraq, this article from the New York Times is about the increasing disillisionment of our troops. The two most striking quotes: “In 2003, 2004, 100 percent of the soldiers wanted to be here, to fight this war,” said Sgt. First Class David Moore, a self-described “conservative Texas Republican” and platoon sergeant who strongly advocates an American withdrawal. “Now, 95 percent of my platoon agrees with me.” But in Sergeant Safstrom’s view, the American presence is futile. “If we stayed here for 5, even 10 more years, the day we leave here these guys will go crazy,” he said. “It would go straight into a civil war. That’s how it feels, like we’re putting a Band-Aid on this country until we leave here.” The guys on the ground are telling us we are wasting our time. Why don’t we listen? It’s time to get out of Iraq…

The Rules
2007-05-27 16:17:30
As of now there are very few rules, and I hope to keep it that way. Posts Kryptonite and I can post whatever we want. No limits, no rules. Readers should always be aware that just because one of us posts something, doesn’t mean we both agree with that point of view. That being said, I will never prevent Kryptonite from posting something that I disagree with, just as he will never prevent me from posting something that I disagree with. Comments Comments are moderated, but this is mostly to cut down on spam. I will approve any comments that add something to the discussion. Comments will not be approved if they are merely name-calling, or profanities with no point to them. For example: Fuck you stupid liberal America hating assholes. That comment will not be approved. Fuck [insert Presidential candidate here]. He’s completely wrong on every issue. He’s such a fucking moron. Does he really think that that’s the solution to Iraq? Fucking idiot. Whil

Welcome to Neo-Prog
2007-05-27 02:52:06
Welcome to Neo-Prog.com. I hope that this blog will help to further the Progressive cause, but in a slightly different way than might be expected. I am not a run of the mill progressive or liberal. My political positions will become more clear as the posts add up, but essentially my politics are a fusion of liberalism and libertarianism (as much as that is even possible). But what is a “Neo-Prog?” Well, Neo-Prog is short for Neo-Progressive. Essentially it reflects my own take on Progressivism (and that of some other people I know and/or admire). The name was made up by Kryptonite and myself (Rebel of the Sacred Heart) in one of our many random conversations about politics. I’ve never heard it sued anywhere else, so I’m going right ahead and using it. If someone else has used it to mean something different, well, too bad; it’s mine now. As of right now, there will be two posters: Rebel of the Sacred Heart (that’s me) and Kryptonite (a goo

Make it Eleven

So apparently Fred Thompson is indeed running for president. This brings the total up to a whopping 11 candidates on the GOP side and 20 for both major parties. It will be interesting to see how this shakes up the GOP primary. I imagine he’ll be right up there as a real possibility. Is there room for four front runners though? I doubt it. One (if not more) of the current three front runners (McCain, Guliani, Romney) will likely be hurt a good bit by Thompson’s entry. Who that will be remains to be seen. Can’t wait to see how the polls play out over the next couple of months. Also, keep in mind that Thompson is no threat whatsoever to Democratic chances in 2008. He’s spouting the same ridiculous GOP talking points about Iraq (and everything else for that matter) as the rest of them. He shouldn’t be a problem at all in the general election.

CNN Democratic Debate
2007-06-03 21:47:56
That was thouroughly unexciting. Kryptonite watched it together and mocked the candidates plenty, but on the whole it was a big waste of time. I don’t think anyone stood out (for good or bad). I didn’t learn anything I didn’t already know about the candidates. So, yeah. Not much to say since the whole thing was pointless. I think it’s just impossible to have a good debate with nine candidates on stage. There just isn’t enough time for each of them to fully articulate points and have a meaningful discussion about the issues. I will say that I was happy to see the consensus that “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” should be ended. It’s an absurd policy that hurts both the military, and gays that wish to serve their country.

Is the Mess in Iraq Spreading into a Regional Conflict?
2007-06-08 01:00:43
This is a post written by my friend Neil that I’d like to share. It is also cross-posted on Daily Kos. Yesterday, between stories of Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, and Congressman Jefferson, I heard that there was a possibility of a large build-up of Turkish troops now entering Northern Iraq . Paul Rieckhoff, MySpace friend and Executive Director of the Iraq Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), sent me an email last night that turned me on to the story: Yesterday, when I heard that thousands of Turkish troops may have crossed the border into Iraq, I was extremely concerned. Turkey has been building up its military forces on the Iraqi border for some time. There has been intense debate in Ankara among political and military leaders about whether to attack separatist rebels of the PKK. When I heard of Turkey’s latest move, I feared that the Iraq war was quickly spilling into a larger regional conflict… So did I. It doesn’t take much research to figure out why

My computer has been having issues lately, which is why I haven’t been posting. Between fighting with the ranom shutdowns and also (for some unkown reason) the ridiculously slow speed of the website this past week, I just haven’t gotten any blogging done. Rest assured though, I will continue to push my Neo-Progressive agenda!

Racism in America?
2007-06-12 09:44:06
Yes. Unfortunately there still is. The case of Genarlow Wilson is just one example. When Henarlow was 17 he had consensual oral sex with a 15 year-old girl (who was white by the way). Genarlow had much promise as a football player and was a good stupent with great grades. But then he was sentenced to 10 years for his “crime.” The fact that he could even be charged with a crime stems from Georgia’s ridiculous laws (influenced heavily by the Christian right). His situation was clearly worsened by the fact that he is black and the girl was white. Thankfully a judge overturned the case and ordered that Genarlow be released from prison. But this should serve as yet another reminder that we need to be on a constant watch for abuses of justice by both the lingering racism in this country and by the Christian right that imposes these absurd “morality” laws. UPDATE: Apparently Wilson’s release has been blocked by the state of Georgia. Why does it n

A City Upon a Hill
2007-06-10 16:59:38
In 1630 John Winthrop gave a sermon entitled “A Model of Christian Charity.” In this speech he said these (now fairly well known) lines: For we must consider that we shall be as a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us. Though his application of these lines was explicitly religious in nature, they can be applied to America as a nation instead. Indeed they have been by many people (including at least two Presidents - Kennedy and Reagan). The argument I will make has been made before. It will be made again. Nevertheless, I feel it is important to continually revisit this theory, especially as it serves as the backbone of my “Neo-Progressive” vision. It is our duty to spread freedom. I’ll repeat that for clarification: it is our duty to spread freedom. This claim is essential. It also worries many people, especially those (left or right) that feel that the United States should mind it’s own business. This new isolationism ha
