Olympus Stylus 770SW: the all-sports camera 2007-05-26 17:36:03
On January I wrote a post about the OlympusStylus
720SW, claiming that it was a water sports camera. The new Stylus 770SW takes a step beyond. In addition to being a water camera, it wants to be your all-sports camera. See it for yourself:
Shockproof: drop it from 5ft if you want.
Waterproof: up to 33 ft.
Freezeproof: -10ºC / 14ºF
Crushproof: put it under 220 lbs. of maximum pressure.
Would you do that to your current, nice and delicate digital camera? I bet you wouldn’t!!
Other nice features of this camera are: a 2.5″ HyperCrystal LCD that allows you to view images in direct sunlight, digital image stabilization, nanometer to measure the air and water pressure to calculate the altitude and depth of your photos, the Bright Capture Technology to make pictures in low-light situations, a 3x optical zoom and 7.1 Megapixel resolution.

Upgrade and Design Change 2007-05-26 03:08:44
In addition the required upgrade to the latest version of Wordpress, I’ve done a complete site redesign.
One of the things that bothered me was font size, especially on Mac systems. Now it’s bigger and more readable. I’ve also added a new section called “Hot Deals” on the sidebar, where I’ll be offering two new good deals every day or every two days.
Any comments are welcome. Enjoy! Read more:Change
Trip Tracker Sports Mate 2007-05-23 04:13:12
Trip TrackerSports
Mate is a free web application where you can upload your workout and analyze it. It supports the following formats for uploading: GPX, NMEA and Garmin Training Center History files.
Two features distinguish this site from its competitors. The first one is that you can replay your workout at any chosen speed using these controls:
The second is that you can upload photos of your trip and “fly” over your route with them in the background. I haven’t tried this (I wasn’t in the mood of taking pictures when running the half marathon :-), but it seems a nice feature.
The site is overall well designed although it could improve in some areas such as speed and usability.
To give it a try just visit: http://www.ttsm.com

Nike to make all running shoes Nike+ compatible 2007-03-28 02:07:17 Nike has plans to make all its runningshoescompatible
with Nike+ technology by the end of 2007.
This is good news if you use the iPod to track your workouts because only a small subset of Nike shoes integrate this technology. This way you won’t have to use these solutions.

Garmin Developer 2007-05-30 02:07:00 Garmin has launched a new website for application developers who want to make their own sites compatible with Garmin GPS devices and website services.
There are several APIs (Application Programming Interface) available through this website. The MotionBased Web Services API, for instance, lets developers interact programmatically with MotionBased, Garmin’s mapping application.
The site also features the Garmin Communicator Plugin API, which allows direct communication between websites and Garmin GPS devices, other services for working with PDAs and smarphones, and location based toolkits to embed Garmin GPS functionality in Java applications.
I’m sure this “opening to the world” will spread even more the dominance of the GPS market by Garmin.
The applications you can create using these APIs are endless:
Routing mashups that communicate directly with your GPS device.
Sport events management systems.
Not related to sports: custom fleet management systems.

Review of the Casio G-Shock GW-800 2007-06-01 09:53:21
Paul Petersen has written a review of the Casio
G-Shock
GW-800 sports watch on The Final Sprint. In his opinion, this watch has four features that distinguish it from the rest of “normal” sport watches:
Solar-powered
Atomic: it gets time and date information from an atomic transmitter.
Durable: it’s a G-Shock, after all.
Water resistant 200 m.

Ultra-light Folding A-bike 2007-06-05 05:07:05
No other than Sir Clive Sinclair has invented this ultra-light
bike. Named after the A shape when in normal position (by the way, what’s the normal position of a folding bike, folded or extended?), the A-bike is the result of five year research from Sinclair Research.
The A-bike feels like a normal bike when riding it, but it’s optimized for short journeys and to easily fold and unfold it. It weights 5.6 Kg / 12.6 lbs and measures 67 cm x 30 cm x 16 cm when folded (Compare them to the 80 cm x 66 cm x 38 cm of the Dahon Speed Pro TT).

Satmap Sports GPS 2007-06-04 03:28:00
Satmap claims that its new Satmap Active 10 is the ultimate sports GPS
. Satmap has designed this GPS as a robust outdoors device with some sports accessories like a bike mount.
What differentiates this GPS from the rest is its integrated digital mapping. This means that you can buy map cards (SD cards) with detailed imagery and insert them into the GPS to create new routes or track your position. Their information PDF also says that you’ll be able to download maps, which I find more practical that the SD card. Satmap is launching over 100 maps this year but right now there are four: UK county, UK Regional, National Trailsm and National Parks, ranging from 29.99 to 99.99 English pounds.
The Satmap Active 10 has also some interesting features: (more…) Read more:Sports
Safe bike lights without batteries 2007-06-08 10:30:35
Riding your bike in cities, especially at night, is a dangerous adventure. That’s why Pedalite, a british company providing safety equipment for riding your bike, invented the Pedalite KPL 100.
The Pedalite KPL 100 is a pedal-powered battery-free pedal that integrates front, rear and lateral lights making it easy for the cycler to be seen. You can read more about it on Pedalite’s website.
Of course this is not a substitute for the other bike lights (front and rear) or other security measures. Accidents can happen at all times and that’s why we should wear helmets while riding a bike. Always!

Practical Waterproof Sports Camera 2007-06-06 23:21:59
I’ve recently written about the robust all-sports camera. The one presented here takes a different approach: a practical and quick operation. While is also designed for sport usage, it stands out for having a strap that you attach to your wrist. You carry it in the flat position and you flip it up to make photos. It has two shutter buttons (the white ones) so that you can quickly make the picture regardless of how the camera is oriented.
This camera has the following features:
