I am my own worst nightmare.
2007-05-31 10:15:00
When I was a student, from kindergarten up through my college graduation, I was the perfect student. I loved studying and always did my homework. Not to mention the fact that I made straight As. Now that I'm a teacher, I find myself wishing I had students who behaved like I did. Instead, I find that I have students who behave like I do. Yes, I am still taking the Korean class at the YMCA. A

headache gone and BlogSupergroup stuff
2007-06-05 08:43:00
Well, my headache is mostly gone (finally!) although I certainly needed several Excedrin to get through my day at work. Luckily for me, tomorrow is a holiday! I'd had no idea until I looked at my calendar this afternoon. Tomorrow is apparently Memorial Day here in South Korea. Or in my world, one-more-day-to-recover-from-splitting-headache-day. Yay.All this week at BlogSupergroup we're sharing

Good Day, Bad Day
2007-06-04 04:29:00
The first part of yesterday was pretty fabulous. At around 11am I met up with Rob, and we headed out to the Bullo Dong tombs (which are essentially located behind the Daegu airport, if you're interested). The Bullo Dong tombs are giant earthen mounds which house the remains of the royalty who ruled this area in the 5th and 6th centuries. While I'd been to the Bullo Dong tombs back in 2004, I

Colbert vs. Rain
2007-06-08 08:44:00
Apparently this is a bit of old news, but it only came to my attention today (thanks Gwen!). Anyway, presenting Stephen Colbert vs. Korean pop star Rain ("Bi" in Korean). And yes, he actually IS singing in Korean :-) This is the singer/video he's spoofing. Also, you should click here to watch Colbert's response to Korean disapproval of his spoof.

Terrible jobs and shameless self-promotion
2007-06-06 07:07:00
A year at Burger King my senior year of high school taught me that humanity is vile. A summer waitressing the graveyard shift at Steak-n-Shake left me totally exhausted. A month waitressing at a Chinese restaurant in my hometown brought me to the realization that I was neither blonde enough nor personable enough to bring in the big tips. Six weeks at a Dell computers call center has caused me to

Crazy Korean Fashions
2007-06-10 05:47:00
My fatdogsport t-shirt with mini-hood... and now with mini-skirt! The thing is, this dress is seriously too risque for Korea - If I were a Korean , I'd have to wear a shirt under or over it! Picnic at the assylum anyone? ;-) Another long-torso shirt. It's so long I could almost wear it as a dress. Yep, that's Frangeul people. I wonder if it makes as much sense to French speakers as Konglish

What a pain in the head!
2007-06-09 00:45:00
I've had problems with headaches all of my life. When I was nine, the eye doctor promised my parents that the headaches would go away once I got glasses. Well, I did need glasses... but that didn't stop the headaches. When I was twelve, the orthodontist promised my parents that once my teeth were straightened out and no longer creating pressure in my mouth, my headaches would go away. Well, I do

Oh, the things we teach! (Part 2)

Just like comparing apples and oranges....
2007-06-14 08:03:00
Since the topic this week over at BlogSupergroup is public transportation and pollution, I compared the public transit systems of Moscow, Daegu and San Diego. Trust me, my post is more interesting than it sounds :-) Go check it out!

Oh, the things we teach!
2007-06-12 09:36:00
Spiders freak me out. They give me the willies, the heebie-jeebies. They make me call for my mommy. (Seriously, she can verify this!) But the spider in that picture is damn cute. And it also looks nothing like a real black widow spider - aside from the whole it-being-a-spider thing. And... Black Widow Spiders can kill you! They shouldn't be your pet!! Now, I agree - people have to be careful

54 Photographs!!!
2007-06-18 09:59:00
I promise I'll give you a detailed write-up of my trip to Busan... but not right now. I just finished sorting through my 200+ photos from yesterday, and selected 54 that were worthy of sharing. Now blogger isn't really the place for 54 photos at one go, so I've uploaded all of them to flickr. You can see them by clicking here or on the image below - Enjoy! I am a faery under a toadstool.
2007-06-17 08:56:00
Well, the weather cooperated, and we had a successful trip to Busan - where we found (among other things) a shopping center full of giant shroomies. I took over 200 photos today, so it will take me a while to get everything sorted and resized and uploaded. And as I am thoroughly exhausted, that's not going to happen tonight! I'll try and get everything uploaded in a day or two :-)

Sky watching
2007-06-16 08:26:00
Today after Korean class, I met up with Donna and we went out for lunch and then coffee. We went to the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf in downtown, mainly because the day was gorgeous and the Coffee Bean has an outdoor patio on the third floor. I sat under this sign... Just look at the clear blue sky! These two girls are studying English. Part of their homework was to interview two foreigners and

As if you weren't tired of this voting crap already...
2007-06-15 11:19:00
Even though they haven't yet announced the "winners" for the Issue 11 contest over at JPG Magazine, they've already started the voting for Issue 12. Two of the categories are up already. One is "Fashion" - for which I have nothing whatsoever to enter. The other is "Family" - so I'm submitting yet another photo of my mom. I took the photo below last summer at Driftwood Beach on Jekyll Island. (You

Turtles: someone educate me PLEASE!
2007-06-21 21:12:00
These "turtle things" (as I call them) are all over South Korea - they are usually located near temples, but I've also found them in parks. Surely someone out there knows what they are and why they're all over the place. If you know, PLEASE tell me! For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, I've included some examples: @ Haeinsa @ Pagyesa @ Geumgang Park, Busan @ Mangudang

Free Kittens, Waycross, GA
2007-06-20 21:28:00
Apparently it's become common knowledge that my house in Waycross, GA is the place to leave your unwanted cats and kittens. Now, we all know that I love furry felines, but there are limits to the numbers that my mom and I can care for. So can you help us out? These three adorable little kittens are in need of a home - want one? Or three?

Doggie Nap
2007-06-20 08:38:00
One of the fruit and vegetable vendors whom I pass every day on my way to work has a cute little white dog. For months when I first moved to Daegu I would attempt to pet this puppy on my way to work. And it would always bark ferociously (or as ferociously as a little dog can bark) and occasionally it would snap at me. Eventually I gave up trying to befriend the little guy. On my way to work

Busan: Beomeosa and Geumgang
2007-06-19 08:26:00
So as I’ve mentioned, my friend Rob and I went to Busan on Sunday. The weather was gorgeous when I rolled out of bed around 9:30, but by the time I made it to the bus station, the skies were overcast and grey. Although we managed to avoid being rained on, the day was dreary throughout. But at least it wasn’t thunderstormy as predicted. Take tha, weather channel! Anyway, we caught the bus from the

Um, okay. Also, that "English" decal in the corner of the windshield belongs to another neighborhood English school, pictured below. For those of you who can't read hangeul, this school's name is Englishee Moo Moo (whatever that means)

The start of the rainy season and other updates from Korea
2007-06-24 01:18:00
For weeks now, weather.com has been predicting torrential rain every day for the forseeable future. And for the past few weeks they have been horribly wrong. Well, it seems that the rain has finally caught up to their predictions. It has been pouring on and off for the past several days, and the dry spaces in between downpours have been incredibly hot and muggy. Now that the rains have begun, I'm

I might be going back to Siberia!
2007-06-22 08:40:00
I don't want to get my hopes up yet, since time is so short and getting visas and tickets here in Korea is going to be complicated... but I might be going back to Siberia ! Diana, who will be replacing me here at the hogwan when I leave has fabulously agreed to come a week earlier than originally planned so that I can do this volunteer program, sponsored by the Great Baikal Trail. If all works as

An aquarium and a mermaid
2007-03-10 07:19:00
This morning the unthinkable happened: I awoke at 7am without even the aid of an alarm. And not just one of those wake-ups where you roll over, grunt at the clock, and go back to sleep either. I was wide awake, on what was (in Daegu, anyway) a sunny Saturday morning. So, what to do? I decided to pop down to Busan. While I’ve been to Busan before, the last time I was there was in 2004, so I

I must reek of catnip or something.
2007-06-28 08:21:00
I mentioned the other day that there was a stray cat, Gray Stray, hanging out on the back walkway of my apartment. Well, it turns out that Gray Stray is the mother of Gray Kitten and Orange Kitten, and they live in the attic space on the roof of Mr. Yu's villa. The kittens flee the moment they see me, and the mother cat defends them from me by hissing ferociously. I've been feeding them regularly
