Snow delay [del.icio.us] 2007-04-17 14:13:51 In late February, 'spring' is a distant dream and it is a crappy, snowy night in the big smoke. And lots of snow means the runways get slick and the whole operation slowly grinds to a halt.

Why Airlines need Trunk Monkeys [del.icio.us] 2007-03-26 11:44:54 It isn't that far-fetched to think we will see 'TrunkMonkeys

JFK Departure 2006-12-04 11:34:00 It's easy to get worn down of the early mornings, late nights and weekends away from the family. But it's also nice to sit back and take in a great view if only for a few moments and realize that life in the pointy end of a plane does offer something that ground-bound office dwellers can only dream about. So I give you a view of the Big Apple yesterday morning at 7:30ish AM. JFK is an easy and relaxed place at that time of the day and for a Sunday in December New York City is a peaceful and pretty place. The Flight Path (more or less):Left turn out off Runway 22R JFKJFK with Manhattan in the distanceManhattan, Laguardia Airport, Central Park, The Empire State Building, The Statue of Liberty. And we are on our way back home to the west coast of the continent. 6 hours to go.Related:JFK and area - Google Maps

Who lost the most? 2006-11-25 11:28:00 The IAMAW was not amused by the Wage Arbitration Settlement with Air Canada in August 2006. At the time Jim Coller, IAMAW District Lodge 140 President and Directing General Chairperson, said “I believe the award released by Arbitrator Don Munroe failed to recognize and seriously undervalued the contributions made by our members during the restructuring of Air Canada.”Arbitrator Douglas Stanley issued a Wage Re-opener Arbitration for the pilots at Air Canada in late October 2006 and ACPA decided not to comment about the award. So how do the pilots feel about it? Suffice to say the size and scope of the award didn’t meet the expectations of many pilots and disappointed most.I’m not about to point fingers or assign blame for what happened because I wasn’t in the room when the union and the company made their presentations. Reading the Arbitration leaves me with the impression that Air Canada presented a case that it was still in a fragile state. Air Canada wasn't achieving its

Airline Pilots aka OCP (Original Canadian Pilots) are represented by the ALPA (Air Line Pilots Association) merger committee.September 1, 2006The Canadian Industrial Relations Board issues Decision 360 dismissing an ACPA request to reconsider Decision 349 issued on March 10, 2006.In part the Board stated:[21] The original decision at paragraphs 106-108 gives some indication of what might result in a legitimate change to the collective agreement’s seniority terms. What, in the face of this request, perhaps needs greater emphasis is what will not. An integration of seniority lists involves competing interests, particularly where there is a majority group and a minority group. If the process simply involved letting the majority choose their preference Read more:Airlines

Pay Survey Of North American Airlines 2005-11-29 17:16:00 A more recent pilot pay survey is available here.Pay is probably the easiest thing to measure when comparing airline collective agreements. What I'm trying to show with this survey is where Air Canada pay fits in relation to the other major carriers in North
America. Remember that pay alone doesn't adequately measure whether one pilot group is doing significantly better than another group. The survey doesn’t show some of the different methods companies use to compensate pilots. Many carriers, Westjet for example, include a profit sharing scheme as a significant part of the total compensation package. Comparing medical benefits, pension plans, share purchase plans, differences in tax rates and other variables unique to each carrier are beyond the scope of this survey.Survey Assumptions:The pilot flies 80 hours a month. Most pilots will see a seasonal variation in the number of hours flown each month. In Canada, scheduled carriers tend to be busier in the summer and slow down in the Read more:Airlines

Goodbye Wingfiles, Hello SmartCockpit 2007-05-25 11:21:00 Photosource: xddoroxI'm not sure what lead to the demise of Wingfiles.com but it seems to be disabled. For those of you that used it in the past, you'll know it as a useful place to find technical information from many sources on transport aircraft flying.I stumbled across this site and it looks like an able replacement. Smartcockpit.com covers a broad range of subject areas centering around flying transport and corporate aircraft. My aircraft covers systems information on a wide variety of aircraft types from the biggest commercial jets to corporate jets and turboprops. A random click through this section indicated many sections are not complete, but there is a surprising amount of information there and hopefully you will find what you need. The section most similar to 'wingfiles' are the Flight Operations and Safety section. These areas cover many topics focusing on flying technique and safety. The other section of interest is Weather. Links to worldwide National Weather Centers are Read more:Goodbye

The new 777 2007-05-18 14:24:00 Some great air-to-air video of the new 777. Enjoy! From cachesk at youtube:These in-the-air images of Air Canada's brand new B777 were captured along the Pacific coast by a specially outfitted Lear Jet. In a carefully choreographed ballet, the smaller jet floated above, below and around Air Canada's newest and largest aircraft to capture this beautiful footage over the Pacific Ocean, the Rocky Mountains and the city of Vancouver.
