Play Tourist in Your Own Hometown!
2007-05-25 19:56:00
One of the regrets I have about living all over the country is that we missed so many opportunities to 'play tourist' in our own hometowns and missed so many great things those area's offered. We did a few things, at my insistance, but my husband has never been one to want to go anywhere or do anything... so we missed out on so many great opportunities! Museums, buildings, events, parks, etc.

By All Means, Don't Forget the Window Blinds!
2007-05-24 23:26:00
When we moved into our second home, it sounds a bit silly now but something we didn't give any thought to beforehand was the fact that it was new construction and obviously, it did not have window blinds. The first night we were there I'm sure we entertained all our neighbors for hours as our home had 28 sets of extra large windows and nary a blind on any of them! The first thing I did the

Are Costco's Universal?
2007-05-24 19:27:00
I can't help it... every time I go into a Costco Membership retail store, at some point during the trek, I smile. Why? I smile because I feel I'm back in my element. I'm comfortable. I'm 'home' even though I've had 10 homes around the country over the past 18 years. Back in 1988 my husband and I were married in a small town in the Midwest. We moved to southern California so he could

Pondering some innovative tutoring
2007-05-24 17:47:00
Perhaps one of the downsides to moving so much over the past few years is that our kids haven't gone through a single school system from Kindergarten thru fifth grade. I've noticed that usually the elementary school teachers have a course mapped out that tends to work best if the children attend consecutive years. Although our children do well in school and are well rounded socially and active

Are gardens a good selling point?
2007-05-22 13:51:00
Every time we've moved to a new home I've wondered whether or not to put in a garden. When we lived in the South, we lived in an apartment so it's wasn't possible. Instead I sufficed by planting some herbs and flowers in planters on the patio. When we moved into our first 'house' I didn't put a garden in the first two years. Partly because I was busy with three children under the age of five

Eeek! Father's Day is Right Around the Corner
2007-05-22 12:45:00
I just finished making a batch of cookies and sat down at the kitchen counter with the laptop and some coffee. Time to relax and surf online for a bit. Well, suddenly I see something that reminds me that Father 's Day is RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER! How in the world do these sneak up on us so fast? On top of everything else in my brain and in my schedule (and in my life!) I have to start

His week to shine...
2007-05-22 12:41:00
As we wait for my husband to be offered a promotion and/or transfer I try not to get too excited about any and every little comment or positive thing that goes on, because I know I can't read too much into it... but how can I not? I don't mind if we have to stay in this state and city, but I at least want him to get his promotion so we can build a new home or move 'up' to a larger home. So I

Stressed and Tired Of It!
2007-05-22 12:15:00
I don't know what it is lately, but I can't get my mind off a vacation. Ever since I resigned from my job I've been on a whirlwind schedule and of course waiting and wondering if my husband is going to be promoted within the next few months just adds more stress. Sometimes to try to relax I go online and plan out a vacation. Today I found myself looking at JMP Travel's site and their Luxury

A productive talk this morning
2007-05-21 11:59:00
This morning while online, I came across a job opening in a field I would like to get back into. I resigned from my previous job in March and took a nice break, but if I could find an opening for the hours and days I want in my 'old' field I would like to return to it. Well, since we are overdue for a promotion and/or move I hesitated to send an inquiry letter until I spoke with my husband.

Finding the right credit card...
2007-05-21 09:38:00
As BabyGirl got older and got a part time job we went to the bank and opened a checking account for her. I remember getting my first checking account when I was 16 too, and it certainly served me well and gave me experience in managing my own money at a young age, unlike my husband who never had a checking account until after he married me! The interesting thing about my daughters account is

Moms Moving Bible
2007-05-18 14:19:00
Because of my experience, having moved 10 times so far and always ready for the 11th, there is one thing I do immediately (immediately!) after I get the phone call from my husband that we are going to be transferred. I make a Moms Moving Bible. Not that it's really a bible... ok, it's a regular $.50 school notebook. But I have always jokingly called it my bible and I certainly do 'live by

Pregnant... no health care?
2007-05-18 13:10:00
As we've moved around the country with my husbands employer over the past 18 years we've also increased our family size, having three children over the years. One thing I found interesting yet frustrating was how many times the company would change our health care company and/or plans. During one pregnancy the company changed plans in the middle of it. As I was going through a healthy

First Thing on Your List to Do... Stop Junk Mail!
2007-05-18 13:05:00
One of the first things that happen each time you buy a new home is that your name and address, your mortgage information and a plethera of other info is sold to numerous companies for the sole benefit of them making money off you. It's all for marketing and you probably don't want most of it. Your mailbox will soon be full of junk you don't want that goes straight to the trash and then,

Faux Stone
2007-05-18 13:00:00
When we moved into our current home it was new construction, but we missed out on making any (all) of the building decisions. We saw it during it's final inspection. One of the ugly things the builders decided to put in was black ceramic tile around the fireplace. Very shiny black ceramic tile. An Asian decor style would be fine, or even a black and white monochromatic scheme. But anything (

Pregnancy Without Health Care
2007-05-18 12:59:00
When my husband and I were ready to start our family we had to wait because he was not at a job that offered health insurance to its employee's. We lived in an odd realm of wanting to start our family so very badly, and living in fear that we would get pregnant before we had maternity health coverage. We ended up getting pregnant the exact same week his health insurance started at his new job.

Two Steps Back
2007-05-18 12:51:00
Yesterday Dh had his annual review. His work was fabulous, he was great, and five stars across the board. Raise? Totally and completely based on the numbers for the company sales. We won't be building a new home any time soon... back to waiting for an opening in the region for that promotion that comes with a decent raise. $30 more a paycheck isn't going to cover much more than the

2007-05-18 11:17:00

Quick and Easy Decor
2007-05-16 12:12:00
When you are waiting to move or if you happen to live in a rental, you can't or don't want to do anything permanent to the walls. However, you still want your kids to have fun, personalized bedrooms where their personality can shine through. Our 11 year old wanted bright blue and lime green walls to match her bedding. Always thinking ahead to "is this going to help or hinder our house

Awesome Organization Site!
2007-05-16 11:53:00
This weekend while surfing the net, my husband found a KISS magazine listed for sale by someone for $30. He wasn't looking to buy, as he already as that particular magazine. I found it for him a few years ago for $1 at a Goodwill store. He just didn't know where he had put it. He found himself on a quest to find the magazine, lost in our storage room, surrounded by a hundred boxes that may or

The cost of listing your home online
2007-05-15 22:08:00
Today I was talking with a friend that recently fired her real estate agent. She was a nice enough lady (the agent) but wasn't doing much byway of advertising my friends home. The home had been on the market for 3 months and they are desperate to move quickly as her husband has accepted a job in another state. So what it came down to was my friend believed her house should be listed on Re*

American Material Handling
2007-05-15 17:50:00
Something a few readers might be surprised to know about this 'nomadic mom' is that I know a lot about building and handling materials. You see, Nomadic Dad used to be in a job that focussed on these products for the first few years of our marriage. Because of this, you can laugh, but when you walk into our garage you find true warehouse quality steel storage units lining the wall of our garage

The ultimate laundry room
2007-05-15 17:20:00
I have a 'decorating file' that I used before we even moved into our current home. At first it held the floor plan and measurements of the rooms in the home along with a sample of the carpet color and the color of the wallpaint. Before we even moved in I was able to shop for window blinds, curtains, paint and furniture knowing the size and shape of the rooms I was working with. After we

Calling Home From France
2007-05-15 16:31:00
Last year this little nomadic family travelled to Italy. It was our first trip abroad and we had quite a few questions about what to pack, what we needed, how much money to bring, how much to exchange in Euro's before we went, and how to handle calls back home while were there. Now that I've got one overseas trip under my belt I have a little more experience on how to use International calling

Review is due this week....
2007-05-15 16:10:00
Today my Dh is home - his one day 'off' this week. I asked if he knew when his annual review was, as it is supposed to be held in May. He surprised me by saying it was expected this week. I guess in a way I'm glad... we've been looking forward to it for, well, almost a year! But on the other hand it must not be holding anything 'extra' or exciting (huge raise or a promotion!) because I

When Moving Boxes are Used for Other Things
2007-05-31 06:32:00
Last night my teenaged son needed cardboard to make a shield and sword for English class. He went downstairs to get a broke-down moving box from the closet to cut up. When he came upstairs he hadn't chosen a regular moving box, but one of the really nice, thick expensive moving boxes that is typically used for kitchen glassware as it's so sturdy. My first impulse was to stop him and send him

Suddenly, A Vacation to Boston isn't As Intimidating Anymore!
2007-05-30 17:56:00
When we moved to our current city it was a fluke, but it ends up both my husbands and my best friends from childhood already lived here. My best friend "J" and I have had a blast the past couple years and one of the things we've talked about is she and I taking our kids on a couple vacations together without our husbands. Hers is afraid of flying and mine can't take the time off. During our

Opening and Closing Bank Accounts
2007-05-30 09:20:00
This morning I was thinking about bank accounts and moving and how they relate to each other and when to do the changing. With 10 moves in my history (well, about 17 moves in my 'life' but this blog is only about moving after marriage and children) I certainly have changed, closed and opened a few accounts. To be truthful, it used to be much easier. Bank employee's tend to be young and

Credit Cards... are crazy things
2007-05-29 16:59:00
When you are waiting (patiently) for word of either promotions or transfers, you have to keep a close eye on things like your finances. Ever ready to plunge headfirst into the world of mortgages, bank loans and qualifying, you need to keep a tight reign on outstanding balances and paying your bills on time to ensure good credit. Sometimes that bites you in the backside! We have our credit

A Tiny Glimmer of Hope
2007-05-29 15:27:00
Over the past week my husbands boss was on vacation so he was in charge. During the week they made buget, made revenue and made their margins. One of the days was completely off the charts for the region and warranted an email from the district boss saying "Congratulations!" and "How did you do it?!" I was so excited when my husband told me. Not that it was anything big... but he is always
