Three Layer Chocolate Cake
2007-06-21 21:46:00
I was going to make this cake today for my father in law, but at the last minute decided to make my old 'standby' chocolate cake that I make with mayonnaise I knew it would turn out, I knew what it tastes like and I didn't have time for any 're-do's' if I didn't care for it. I'm not sure where I got this one, it's one of those 'typical' recipes like a million others except this one has 'crumbs'

Food Products That You Feel Good Giving
2007-06-21 11:02:00
At various times throughout my life I've stumbled upon a company, food based magazine or a food product that somehow made my soul happy. Walking through their store, reading the magazine or buying or using their products somehow made a difference in how I felt about what I was eating, cooking or buying. It truly affects my mood and calms me. Centers me. I can wander aimlessly for an hour in

Zucchini Casserole
2007-06-26 19:36:00
I was just out in my garden today and had to laugh. You see, it's had a rough start this year, with the bunnies eating a good portion of it, bugs eating a quarter of what was left and two days of a vicious hot strong wind that blew across the fields and twisted and snapped the few things that were left. It's slowly coming back from the dead, but there is one thing that is healthy, strong and

Beautiful Furniture Delivered and Set Up at No Extra Cost!
2007-06-26 18:52:00
There are a few things in life that are 'needs' instead of 'wants'. One of those needs is of course, food. Another, shelter. But what do you put in that shelter? That leads you to another need; furniture. I will readily admit that one of the reasons I love moving and relocating so much is the ability to start fresh, in a new home, and decorate it to my personal interests at the time. I love

Jalapeno Popper Bites
2007-06-26 07:16:00
One of my all time favorite foods are Jalapeno Poppers. I love them so much I could eat them for lunch and dinner every single day. However, they are quite expensive. I've made many versions at home over the years... everything from bacon wrapped, to stuffed with cheddar and monterey jack to my favorite; cream cheese. However, I will readily admit that I hate (hate hate hate) breading things.

Coffee Granita
2007-06-25 14:08:00
I've been waiting oh-so-patiently for the warm weather so I can make this one. This week it's in the 90's so it's perfect! I am putting this one here just as I found it, with no tweaks or changes as I haven't made this particular version before. I have another version I have made, but I'm always open to try new versions. Coffee Granita 1 1/3 c ground espresso coffee beans (about 4 oz) 2/3 c

Lettuce With Sour Cream Dressing
2007-06-25 13:58:00
While surfing the internet a couple months ago I came across this old fashioned recipe that brought a smile to my face. I hadn't thought of this recipe in about 30 years, but the second I saw it, my Grandmothers face flashed in my mind. My Grandma H made this every so often when we would be at her home for dinner (or 'supper' as she called it). It's perfect for a hot summer evening meal with a

From Kitchenware to Underwear!
2007-06-25 13:52:00
This morning as I did the dishes I noticed that even my plain white, durable Corelleware that I bought to withstand the daily use by small children, has chipped. I then put the baking pans away and noticed they were looking a little worse- for- the- wear and sure enough, my old reliable cookie sheets have seen better days. I figured maybe I should start keeping my eyes open for some good deals

Spinach & Basil Frittatas
2007-06-30 16:22:00
I picked up a copy of the free issue of Delicious Living at my grocery store today (you can find them in the organic section). I've been reading this magazine since around 2001 or so. I absolutely love it! I can't afford to buy all organic foods to feed our family of five (2 high schoolers, 1 middle schooler, my husband and I) but I do love to use organic when it fit's in our (tiny) budget and

A Different 7 Layer Bar
2007-06-29 06:35:00
I think most people have had the traditional 7 layer bars that use sweetened condensed milk, chocolate chips and coconut, however, as much as I love sweetened condensed milk and coconut, I've never loved those bars. They are quite popular with the rest of the population but I'm weird I guess. When I saw this recipe I decided it had enough different ingredients to make it interesting. The rice

Hamburger Salad Sandwiches
2007-06-29 06:28:00
When I saw this recipe on an old time recipe board I had to read through it a couple different times. I couldn't decide if you really, truly, served it cold. Ground beef and 'cold' just don't go together well in my mind. It's a recipe that I know is at least 40 years old and I suspect even older, as I would hedge a bet I'd find similar in some of my old church cookbooks from the 30's and 40's.

Pumpkin Bars with Cream Cheese Frosting
2007-06-29 05:45:00
When I was a child my Mother didn't stray too far into the cooking realm. I remember angel food cake for birthdays and banana cake and banana bread. Once in a great while she'd attempt chocolate chip cookies but you had to get them asap out of the oven or they would be rock hard within the hour. Once she made oatmeal raisin cookies but she cooked with lard instead of shortening... so you can

Are You Attracting Positive Energy With the Foods You Eat?
2007-06-28 12:08:00
For those that love food, recipes and well... eating, the subject of diet always comes up. There has always been and always will be a newest, latest, greatest 'diet' fad because as long as there is food, there are those that will over-eat. The reasons we over-eat and the food we choose to eat vary greatly but the end result is the same. There is a book out by diet and meditation expert Nick

Chile Artichoke Dip
2007-06-28 10:41:00
Another artichoke dip!? Why yes! Can you tell artichokes are one of my favorite foods? You can never have too many artichoke recipes. *wink* This one is copied from a website online for my 'make sometime this week' list. I've never added chilies to my artichoke dips before so it will be an interesting twist. I don't plan to fondue it either, as I have an aversion to fondue (snicker) but

Summer Time With Pets?
2007-06-28 10:24:00
I know many (most?) of my readers have pets and I just wanted to take a moment to do a little blogger service reminder. Now that summer is in full swing and we have hot temperatures, anyone with pets that are outside even if just for a 2 minute bathroom break, are going to need to be on the lookout for fleas. You'll want to practice natural flea control and flea repelling products now, because

Fourth of July Menu?
2007-07-03 12:07:00
I'm sitting here at the island in the kitchen deciding what to make for an impromptu Fourth of July celebration we are holding tomorrow. My husband hasn't had the Fourth of July off from work in almost 19 years so I was taken by surprise to find out he got it off this year. I invited my good friend, her husband and 3 daughters over, and we've extended the invitation to my husbands best friends

Almond Poppyseed Muffins
2007-07-02 14:20:00
If I had to pick a favorite flavor of muffin, it would be Almond Poppyseed. I can't have one this week as I'm trying to detox my body of all white flour and sugar, but that only makes me crave them more! Ha. This recipe is supposed to be like Otis Spunkmeyer muffins, however I don't think I've had one of that brand for about 3 years and I don't think I've ever had his Almond Poppyseed muffins

Low Carb Sugar-Free Mousse
2007-07-02 13:00:00
I've been feeling exhausted lately and literally tired almost all the time. I'm sluggish and feeling rather frumpy... my skin is not glowing and supple, and I know it's time to step up to the plate to lower the carbs and cut out the sugar again. I'm a full supporter and firm believer in the Atkins way-of-eating but I admit that I don't follow it as a way of life... yet. I've got a story

Cornbread Gravy
2007-07-02 06:40:00
Although I lived in Nashville, TN for over 5 years, I can't recall ever being served 'cornbread gravy'. It certainly makes sense though, as it's similar to sausage gravy, just using up leftover cornbread. I've made 'bacon gravy' before which is also similar except of course, for the addition of the corn bread. Served with biscuits, what a hearty comfort food or breakfast on a chilly winter

Lemon Shrimp Appetizers
2007-07-01 07:35:00
I think I've touched on the fact that growing up in the heartland of the mid-west in the 70's and 80's, my mother didn't stray too far out of her realm when it came to cooking. I grew up eating about 10 meals over and over again, whether it be pork chops, steak, roast and potatoes, burritos or taco salad. At 18 I moved 2000 miles from home to Southern California and embraced new foods with a

Bagels and Broadway... a Trip to New York
2007-07-01 07:23:00
It's summertime, when many of us are trying to squeeze in a vacation or two. When I go on vacations I like to try the region's style of food and recipes, catch some sun, shop, and of course tour or see something that city is famous for. If I was to head to New York , as one of my best friends just did, I would try to see a ball game and do some shopping, eat as much 'New York' food as I could,

Tortilla Roll Ups
2007-07-06 12:58:00
Ah, such a simple food to prepare and serve yet it always gets compliments. The tortilla roll up! There is really no real 'recipe' for these and even though you hate to hear that, it's the truth. Wraps and roll ups are so versatile that almost anything you put in them (within reason of course!) is going to taste good. I swear! Think about what you think would taste good on a sandwich or a

The fountain of youth just might exist... kind of
2007-07-06 11:54:00
Even though I spent far more time in the sun than I should have, and grew up eating foods that weren't the healthiest of choices due to my Midwestern style upbringing and a Mother with little interest in cooking, I was blessed with genes that have allowed me to age at fairly decent rate. As I got into my thirties I noticed some wrinkles showing up, a difference in my skin elasticity and how my

Seafood Cakes
2007-07-05 10:39:00
I wanted to post where I got this one, but goldarnit I can't remember! Ever a fan of crab cakes, this one uses scallops and shrimp as well so it's a seafood cake instead. The cornbread mix in it makes it 'southern'. I have not prepared this recipe yet because I never keep cornbread mixes on hand (I always make mine homemade!) and I've been waiting on the crabmeat because I refuse to use

Zucchini Jam
2007-07-12 17:16:00
Go ahead and laugh, but when you are parked outside your local school, church or neighbor's house and you leave your car door unlocked and you come out to find 2 bags of zucchini left on your car seat, you'll soon be glad for every zucchini recipe you have ever come across in your life. You'll learn to print and save them for future reference! Zucchini Jam 6 cups zucchini, peeled and shredded

Email Marketing Programs for Businesses of All Sizes
2007-07-11 15:23:00
Anyone with a serious interest in cooking and recipes and loves it as much as I do has obviously considered making a career out of it in some way. I can't tell you how many times I've sent for information on publishing my own cookbook, how many times I've looked into starting my own catering business or even opening a restaurant. Big dreams or little dreams, they've probably fluttered across

Broccoli Cornbread
2007-07-11 15:21:00
I grew up eating a lot of cornbread. Sometimes from a jiffy mix, other times from scratch, we were sure to have corn bread every time we had chili, and in the Mid West, you have chili often during those long 7 month long winters! After I was married and had children, I moved to the South and only then realized that cornbread came in more flavors. Jalapeno's and Broccoli or cheddar cheese

Carrot Bread for a Bread Machine
2007-07-11 14:37:00
Although I have made carrot bread in the past, I have never used my bread machine, nor yeast to do so. It's a concept that is interesting, but yet seems strange to me since I think of carrot bread as a 'quick' bread. Surfing the internet one night a few months ago I came across this one and copied it down for future use. Time has gotten away from me and I've not managed to make it yet,

The Italian Influence into our Lives
2007-07-10 20:28:00
Last year I took a trip to Italy with my oldest daughter and her Art Club through the High School. We travelled to Rome, Florence and Pompeii and enjoy some wonderful true Italian food, as nary one fast food item passed our lips the entire week we were there. I came home with a love of black olive pate' and an appreciation of the respect traffic gives the pedestrian in that country! Truly,
